Pennington's #3

A Shop Girl's Christmas

Rate this book

Gripping drama as Pennington's department store prepares for a glittering Christmas in 1911, but a killer stalks the women of Bath.

Christmas sees Pennington's at its most glorious, thronged with shoppers, its grand staircase and balcony adorned with holly, mistletoe, tinsel and lights. It should be the happiest time, but dramas are seething beneath the surface.

For Cornelia Culford, in charge of jewellery, a divorce hearing looms, where she could lose custody of her young sons to her overbearing and unfaithful husband.

For Stephen Gower, being head of security at Pennington's is the perfect refuge from a tragic past at Scotland Yard. But soon the past will call him back, as Joseph Carter and Elizabeth Pennington beg him to help solve the murder of Joseph's first wife, now that it seems as if the killer has struck again.

For Joseph and Elizabeth, their marriage depends on exorcising the past. But can it ever be laid to rest?

This was book 3 in the series but my first. But it was extremely easy to get into the story.

It was 1911 and Christmas time at the Pennington store. Cornelia was going through a divorce while struggling with job and children, and Stephen, who had left Scotland Yard, was the security guard at the store. Both had a past and found themselves attracted to each other. There were murders of rich women happening into which Stephen was asked to look.

My first book by author Rachel Brimble, I loved the drama and murders intertwined in the story. Though a historical fiction, it had emotions and mystery to draw my attention into the depths of it. The characters were well rounded, I loved their interactions.

The author's writing was fluid and detailed. Pennington was beautifully described, I could feel my eyes sparkling imagining it all. I was like the kid in Home Alone movie. The book was completely entertaining, it had a lot happening which steadied the pace. The murder mystery kept my thriller-y mind enraptured. A good breakfast read, I would say.

Christmas at Pennington's is the third book in the Pennington's Series by Rachel Brimble. It can easily be read as a standalone, but I would recommend that you read the others first because if you read this one first you will want to read the others and there will be no surprises if you do that. I have read the previous books and loved them and I am happy to say that this one is equally as good.

Stephen Gower, a police sergeant currently suspended from Scotland Yard pending an investigation decides he needs a break from the police force altogether. He goes to spend time with his mother living in Bath and takes on a job as a watchman (security guard) at Pennington's Department Store.

Cornelia Culford is a woman in the midst of a divorce. She has two young sons and is trying to move on with her life. She lives with her brother and sister-in-law, the latter who is close friends with Elizabeth Pennington, the owner of the department store. Cornelia gets a job there working on the jewellery counter and it's there that she first notices Stephen and visa versa.

There is an instant attraction between them, it's as if they are drawn to each other and feel that the other has secrets that causes them pain. Pain that they want to help ease even if the time for any romance is all wrong.

As well as a relationship possibly developing between the couple there is also a drama that keeps the book intriguing. Elizabeth's husband Joseph Carter was married before. His wife was murdered 5 years ago and although he has remarried he still has a lot of pain about his first wife's murder. He especially hates that nobody has ever been caught for the act. All that could be about to change when another woman is murdered in Bath and everything points to the culprit being the same person that killed his wife. Joseph decides to ask Stephen to look into his concerns, and despite wanting to keep away from police work, he can't help but agree to help.

Will Stephen prove that the killer is the same person, more importantly, will he be able to capture the man finally giving Joseph some closure. If he can't then a future for Elizabeth and Joseph might end up with them separating because he is so obsessed with getting justice.

I really enjoyed this story, there was so much going on in it, the murder investigation, Cornelia's divorce, the relationship developing between her and Stephen, and then the problems Stephen was dealing with back at Scotland Yard, all revolving around the people linked to the fabulous Penningtons Department Store. I loved the scenes where the author describes the beauty of the place decorated for Christmas, and where the customers are interacting with the staff making purchases etc. I could just picture myself shopping there and making a whole day of it.

I was more than happy with how the book ended, closure was important in more than one instance and as it came about I was smiling. I am not sure if there will be another book in this series, I definitely hope there will be though as this has become one of my firm favourites.

A department store in Bath brilliantly preparing for Christmas but behind the scenes there is a lot of drama. A killer stalks the streets of Bath preying on women - and women who are respectable and doing good for the community.

Cornelia desperately trying to carve a niche for herself and her two sons in a contested divorce case. Stephen head of security at Penningtons, finds himself drawn into a murder investigation which he does not want to even know about. Stepping down from Scotland Yard he just wants to keep his head down and get on with his daily life. Joseph and Elizabeth cannot get past the tragic murder of Joseph's first wife and this is affecting their marriage and when murder strikes again they know they cannot sit back, despite Police inaction.

The drama of individual lives going on apace, set against the backdrop of the murders was balanced very well. It was several stories interspersed with each other and though set against the backdrop of the impending festival it was not a Christmassy book per se and could be read at anytime.

The characterization was spot on and the mystery murder detective theme was well thought of and detailed.

Brimming with drama, style, and secrets, CHRISTMAS AT PENNINGTON'S by Rachel Brimble is a story that comes alive in your mind as you read each page and is sure to please historical fiction fans everywhere.

It is 1911 and Pennington's department store is getting ready for Christmas with its stunning displays of elegance and sophistication. But outside these hallowed walls, a killer stalks the wealthy women of Bath and is making its presence felt.
Cornelia is struggling to juggle her job at Pennington's with her children and the divorce that is looming over her head like a threatening cloud, but she will do whatever it takes for those she loves to be happy. Working as security at Pennington's gives Stephen something to focus on as his past is picked over at Scotland Yard but when he is asked to look into the murders, he cannot wait to discover the truth and prove to himself that he can do this.
But as new relationships begin to blossom and old wounds try to heal, will those at Pennington's uncover the truth and find happiness in time for Christmas?

Compelling with plenty of drama, secrets, and misunderstandings, CHRISTMAS AT PENNINGTON'S by Rachel Brimble is part historical fiction and part mystery which worked really well for me. The characters are fascinating and absorbing and while this book is part of a series it can easily be read as a standalone, but as I always say, why have one good book when you can have more?
Pennington's department store is like a character itself and I enjoyed picturing this breathtaking place as the author describes it with such love and detail.
There is something for everyone in CHRISTMAS AT PENNINGTON'S and I cannot wait to read more from Rachel Brimble, who has a way of making the past come alive in such a way which is truly inspiring.

Christmas in 1911 is fast approaching, but a killer stalks the women of Bath.
For Cornelia Culford, in charge of jewellery, a divorce hearing looms, where she could lose custody of her two young sons to her overbearing and unfaithful husband.

But soon the past will call him back, as Joseph Carter and Elizabeth Pennington beg him to help solve the murder of Joseph's first wife Lillian, now that it seems as if the killer has struck again.
This is the third book in the series & whilst it could easily be read on its own the world surrounded the department store & its employees is highly entertaining. We met Cornelia in the previous book, which told her brother Lawrence’s story. This is another very well written book that flows extremely well. The characters are well fleshed & have depth. I really liked Cornelia who has survived an abusive marriage & is now coming out the other side a much stronger woman. Stephen is riddled with guilt over a case that caused him to leave London whilst an investigation takes place. This is a slow burn romance & I found myself wanting things to work out for the pair but that seemed in jeopardy & the pages flew by as I read towards the conclusion
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Christmas at Pennington's is another wonderful addition to this early turn of the last century series. The story is based around the characters of Stephen Gower and Cornelia Culford, They become acquainted while both working at Pennington's where they become friends that help each other to solve the the mystery of who is behind the murders in Bath, and at the same time they are both also having to muddle through dealing with their own personal problems. With working so closely together their friendship quickly starts to change to feelings of them both needing and wanting more.
I quickly became engrossed in this story as it's just so angsty and full of drama, it had me gripped right from the start as it was such an exciting read, I just couldn't help myself from imagining all the glitz and glamour of the department store, the shining lights of Christmas to the darkness and danger that they faced in search of the murderer. I really connected with the characters and enjoyed reading about their romance very much.
I have always loved Rahel Brimbles style of writing as it's just so detailed and easy to get lost in. Her stories are well researched and true to the time period that they are set in.
This is a wonderful Christmas story that takes a walk on the darker side of the festive season.

Is it to early for Christmas books? Honestly, I don't care because I will read any Holiday type of novel anytime of the year. And having read the previous books in this series, I was so excited!

Although it can be read as a standalone novel, I highly recommend you to read the first two books because some characters appear in this one despite the fact that the main character is Cornelia, and by reading the previous novels you will have a better understanding of the background of the characters as well as the world and the context, time period and location where and when this story happens.

It's a historical romance, and I loved the previous novels because of how the author talked about different issues and showed us how society was (and in a way, still is in some aspects). This novel kept things up, and here the author talks about divorce, domestic violence, and so much more. And every single one of those topics are still worth talking about in our present.

We follow Cornelia as she deals with her personal issues (divorce and being at the verge of loosing her children), and Stephen Gower the (handsome, okay, that's how I imagine him) head of security at Pennington's. And I loved them both and loved discovering more about them and see them win and be happy in the end.

Of course, as the title indicates, it happens during Christmas, and reading about the magic of Christmas in Pennington's, I loved the images I had and the excitement I felt. Of course, the Christmas spirit isn't just happiness, romance and lights, because this story bring us mystery and crime, which just adds to captivating element.

Overall, I loved this novel and I highly recommend this entire series. If you like Historical Romances with mystery this one is definitely for you.

Elizabeth Pennington and her husband, Joseph Carter, have continued their remaking and revival of Pennington's department store, but their lives and the lives of their employees and friends are also continuing.

Joseph becomes even more distressed and frustrated over the never-solved murder of his first wife, Lillian, when another kind and charitable woman is killed in exactly the same circumstances--attacked while bringing food to the homeless.

Esther Stanbury, now married to Lawrence Culford, is pregnant with their first child together. Lawrence's sister Cornelia has left her abusive husband, David, taking her two children with her. She's now living with Lawrence and Esther, and working in the jewelry department at Pennington's

And Pennington's has another new employee, Stephen Gower, formerly a Scotland Yard detective, has left the department after a case that ended tragically and made him feel that he had failed those who were killed. He took a job as a watchman at Pennington's. He isn't at all happy when Joseph, aware of his former occupation, asks him to help investigate Lillian's death.

And though David Parker doesn't want his wife back, having a younger and more compliant lover in waiting, he does want back his children, and will do whatever he can to get them back--even though he has no interest in actually parenting.

These are all great characters, and it's enjoyable and satisfying to follow them as they work through their problems as Christmas approaches, and learn a bit more about accepting themselves, helping each other, and not blaming themselves for being human and fallible.

Recommended.

I received a free electronic galley from the publisher, and am reviewing it voluntarily.

Christmas at Pennington’s by Rachel Brimble is the third installment in the Pennington’s series. It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series (but why not read all three books). Christmas at Pennington’s takes readers on a journey back to November 1911 in Bath, England. Pennington’s department store is beautifully decorated for Christmas and customers are busily shopping for Christmas presents. Cornelia Culford, along with her two sons, has left her abusive husband, David and moved in with her brother, Lawrence and his family. Cornelia obtained at job at Pennington’s working in the jewelry department. She is worried about the upcoming divorce hearing because David is now trying to obtain full custody of their sons. Stephen Gower is a sergeant with Scotland Yard until three women and one constable died. Stephen feels guilty for them being slain and the Board is reviewing the incident. Until they rule on the event, Stephen has accepted a position as watchman at Pennington’s. The last thing Stephen wishes to do is investigate a crime, but Joseph Carter needs his help. Joseph wants his first wife’s killer found especially now that another charitable woman has been found dead in the same manner. Joseph believes Stephen is the man to help him find the ruthless killer. I thought Christmas at Pennington’s was well-written with it moving along at a gentle pace. I enjoyed the author’s detailed descriptions which allow me to visualize the scenes from the book. Cornelia and Stephen start out as co-workers with the relationship slowly developing as time passes. There were some intimate scenes that I wish had not been as detailed or had been excluded from the book (I felt they took away from the story). I like that Esther and Lawrence are helping fight for women’s suffrage and bring awareness to the cause. It was a hot issue at the time. The mystery enhanced the story. Stephen could not help looking into the case and Cornelia ends up assisting him. I like how all the characters storylines are woven together into one charming novel. Rachel Brimble created strong characters that are undergoing personal conflict. It is wonderful how they help each other and that the characters grow as individuals. The author captured the time period with the historical events, the items available, the clothing, language, attitudes and conveyances. Christmas at Pennington’s is a rich historical novel with a cold-blooded killer, a vexing sister, a scurrilous husband and Christmas cheer.

The Pennington's series is fast becoming one of my all time favourites; it has everything and more in a story. We have strong female lead characters, troubled pasts, struggles for independence, family drama, glitz and glamour of the early 1900's, political uprising, danger, mystery and above all else romance.

Christmas at Pennington's is Book 3 in the series and although each story can be read as a standalone the characters lives do follow on in their journeys in each story and it's wonderful to read this progression so I would highly recommend reading all the books in the series in order.

Two people who have recently suffered a loss are left guilty with the repercussions from this. When fate plays it's hand at putting these two people together can the strength from one give confidence to the other?

Cornelia Culford has left the family home with her two young boys and is seeking solace with her brother Lawrence and his wife Esther following the break-up of her marriage. Cornelia is concerned about the divorce court hearing and is afraid the judge will rule in her ex-husband's favour. Cornelia has enjoyed the growing confidence and independence of earning her own keep whilst she's been living in Bath but her mind is unsettled as to whether she can continue this as well as be the sole carer for her children.

Stephen Gower is a sergeant at Scotland Yard and is temporary taking time out from a very challenging, emotionally charged case. He's decided to take a job at Pennington's in Bath. With Stephen's job he's found it best to keep himself to himself but when Cornelia decides to befriend him he's taken out of his comfort zone. Also thinking he will have an easy time working and living in Bath he's faced with helping his new employer Joseph Carter in finding the culprit for his late wife's murder. Memories from his life in London are forced back to the top of his mind and he has no option but to face them.

The author Rachel Brimble has created another great instalment in the Pennington's series you will be kept on edge in a race to end years of mental torment for a murder cold case. We are also introduced to new characters which blend beautifully with the ensemble of ladies and gentleman of Bath we've learned to love from the previous stories. A story that is intense and dramatic at times but also hasn't missed out any of the romantic charm.

This is a series I always enjoy, and look forward to reaching in my list! So, high expectations – which were fully rewarded!

This time round we focus on two of the newer members of Pennington’s staff; Cornelia, serving customers with the best jewellery and trying to rebuild a life for herself and her children while she waits for the court hearing which will decide on her divorce petition. Stephen Gower is also waiting for a decision – one which will decree if he can continue with his police career and, in the meantime, he is working security for the famous store – but Joseph Carter has a ulterior motive in offering him the job; with his crime background, might he not be the perfect person to find out who was responsible for the murder of his first wife?

With lots of content, this is an exciting read! As well as following the new characters, we also find out how those in previous novels are faring and it’s all easily entwined. I love Rachel Brimble’s writing, and think she has surpassed my expectations with this one .. it is packed with detail all the way through. There is so much happening – and yet, it’s all so easy to follow! With skilled writing and a real flair for story telling, I think this is my favourite of the series so far! Such a pleasure to be back in the world of Pennington’s, and especially for the festive season. The sparkle in the store transmits on the page really well and I’ve even found myself browsing Christmas decorations! Now, THAT’s success! Completely worth a full five stars, without a doubt .. and a firm recommendation that you catch up with this fabulous series!

At first, I thought there were so many spelling and punctuation errors that I wouldn't be able to read it. I finally realized the book was from the UK! Whew! I am a proofreader so I was starting to twitch at what I assumed were mistakes and poor proofing. After I got past the differences I began to thoroughly enjoy the story. Rachel Brimble has given her readers strong women characters that are definitely unusual for the turn of the twentieth century. Pennington's is a large department store heading into the Christmas season. Stephen, Cordelia, Elizabeth, and Esther are all part of the Pennington family but each one has their own problems. How can they help each other while helping themselves? I loved how the storylines were woven together. Even though the story contains everything from divorce to murder, the development of the characters was what impressed me. Each character was strong, independent and had a strong storyline. Honestly, each character could have been a separate book! It speaks highly of Brimble's writing skills that she blended all the storylines without lessening or minimizing the importance of each one. This is a great holiday story but it can be enjoyed anytime. Don't wait for the holidays, read it now!

Another addition to the Pennington Department series. Christmas at Pennington's by Rachel Brimble was an interesting read. What an ability Ms. Brimble has for making a setting come to life. With her detailed description, you can picture the beautifully decorated department store, ready for the Christmas season. The two main characters Stephen Gower and Cornelia Culford are employees at Pennington's. They start out as friendly co-workers but end up as so much more. I loved the slow pace and development of their relationship. Stephen is on suspension from the London police force while being investigated. Cornelia has her own troubles trying to obtain a divorce from an abusive, cheating husband and raising her two young sons. Stephen came to Bath to stay with his mom and to get away from police work. There have been several brutal murders of wealthy charitable women. This case is something he can not just walk away from. This adds just the right mystery to complete this already great book.

What a fabulous book I really enjoyed reading. This is the third book in a series, but is the first one I’ve read. It is fine to read as a stand-alone, but I have just purchased the other books in the series as I absolutely loved reading about the Pennington department store in Bath. Bath is one of my favourite places to visit and so made the book all the more enjoyable to me that I was reading about streets and places I’d actually been. This book left me wanting more so I really hope that Rachel will be adding to the series. If this is the genre you like I can highly recommend this book.

Another brilliant read in the Pennington Series, this is the third book the other two I feel are must reads before you read this is one, as you can pick up the characters from the other books in the series. This one involves the new characters of Cornela Culford and Stephen Gower, to whom the story mainly centres around. Not only is there romance in this book but also a mystery. I will not give to much of the story away, but a suggestion that you read it. Hoping that there will be another in this series.

Another absolute page-turner!

Who wouldn't want to hop back in time and do their Christmas shopping at Pennington's Department Store? But aside from the festive feel, there are a lot of different threads running through the third book in this engaging series.

Beautifully written and another absolute page-turner, it has just the right mix of history, romance and mystery! It's a wonderful story that left me with a smile on my face and cheered me up over a very wet and windy weekend.

This is the third book in the Pennington’s series, but it can be read as a standalone novel. The story picks up at Christmas in 1911 at the opulent department store, Pennington’s. Lavishly decked out with the finest Christmas decorations the store looks amazing, but the staff that work there are facing many trials and tribulations in their personal lives. There is also a killer stalking the streets of Bath targeting the local women, and the owners of Pennington’s ask former policeman and Head of Security at the department store to investigate the murders…

I’m no stranger to Pennington’s, having read the other books in the series. Having the story based around Christmas makes for a very festive read and the author has yet again wonderfully described the elegance and luxury of the department store. When reading the previous books in the series, I’ve been able to imagine what the store would look like and whilst reading this latest instalment the descriptions really come to life and I could just see it in all it’s Christmas glory! The book welcomes back some of the previous characters and it’s nice to pick up on their storylines. It does also have the intrigue and mystery of a series of murders where the killer is preying on women, which added to the romance story between Cornelia and Stephen, leads to an excitable and enjoyable read.

The author has yet again used her obvious local knowledge to bring the story to life, along with well researched historical events, clothing and attitudes. It is packed full with different storylines from divorce, murder and even the suffragette movement, and whilst that may sound too much for one book, it really isn’t and the story flows well and moves at a good pace which holds the readers interest all the way through. This was another welcome addition to the series and I would highly recommend reading them all!

This is the third book in the Pennington's series. I read this as a standalone novel, although I've previously enjoyed The Mistress of Pennington's, the first instalment in this series.

In the midst of a divorce from her abusive, cheating husband, Cornelia Culford is she's trying to rebuild a life for herself and sons by working in the jewellery department at Pennington's in Bath. There she meets Stephen Gower, head of security and another new employee who is also trying to forget about events from the past.

This novel has it all, romance, history and mystery all wrapped up in a fascinating narrative. Ms Brimble continues to enlighten me about this momentous time in history with well-researched details within well-written and thoughtful story-lines. The simplicity of a department store backdrop is perfect for the different plot threads; some new whilst others are a continuation from previous books in the series. The latter doesn't require previous knowledge but will tempt to want to find out more about these equally charming characters, specifically Joseph Carter and Elizabeth Pennington.

The time-line is the lead up to Christmas, 1911 and I love all the descriptions of the festive decorations used at this time making it easy to visualise how it all looked in reality. Despite this, the narrative focuses on the everyday events and happenings of the character's which just happen to occur at this time of year. I liked this aspect because this novel can be read at any time of the year, not just at Christmas.

One thing is now certain, I want to read book two, A Rebel at Pennington's to learn more about Esther and Lawrence Culford. Also, with many references within the narrative relating to something significant in 1912, I'm expecting another intriguing instalment, soon...I hope.

Once again we are transported to the Suffragette era and Bath, England's premiere shopping experience. This story will also take us to the back streets, dark alleys and the ugly side of the gentrified lifestyle. The characters have ethics which bring about moral dilemmas. This series is particularly about strong women. I do recommend you read each of the series stories but this book stands unquiveringly alone.
Cornelia Culford is a wife who has done her duty and now is all about protecting her children, even when that means exposing her weaker side and the abuse she has taken at the hands of her husband.
Stephen Gower has removed himself to Bath and Pennington's department store to lick his wounds and clear his head. He must learn to forgive himself.
Joseph Carter is similarly wounded. Both men hold onto guilty for actions not taken.
Can the supportive women around them help them come to terms with life's future potential and in the process help catch a killer?
History and mystery combine with family drama to offer up a five star read that will open your eyes and maybe also your heart.

This is my first trip to Pennington’s and what a delight it is. Set in historic Bath, this historical romantic saga, with a mystery to solve, is full of contrasts. The glamour, and tasteful glitz of the elegant department store, in contrast to darkness enveloping Bath as a murderer, add their menacing presence.

This is the third book in the Pennington’s historical saga but reads well as a standalone. However, the writing, style, the author’s attention to detail and the vividly portrayed characters make me want to read the first two book in the series too.

There are a number of stories in this book. The lead story features Cornelia and Stephen, both employees of the illustrious store. Cornelia is facing an acrimonious divorce hearing from her abusive and adulterous husband. She is the sole carer for her two children and fears he may use this against her to gain full custody. She has information that may help her case, but is she prepared for the damage it may do to her and her offspring?

Stephen is a policeman from Scotland Yard with a tragic past. As head of security, he hopes this simpler role will give him time to heal and decide how to move on with his life, which is blighted by guilt. However, a murder and a connection to a past cold case draws him in and forces him to face his demons. He finds an ally in Cornelia, and a willing partner as they try to solve the mystery of their employer’s first wife.

An absorbing family drama, with a beautifully described historical setting. Lies, secrets, fear and mystery lie beneath the Christmas glamour and glitz, and a lovely romance fights for life in the midst of all the drama.

Christmas at Pennington’s has something for everyone, drama, love, mystery and romance in a year of social and political change.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

I was very happy to be able to get my hands on Christmas at Pennington's having already read and reviewed The Mistress of Pennington’s and A Rebel at Pennington’s both of which I loved. I really enjoy reading historical series, as they give us the opportunity to not only revisit some beloved characters, but also a specific time period. As you will be aware if you follow me, you will know that historical novels set during periods of war are normally my favourite, but the Pennington's series has been a very welcome change.

Christmas at Pennington's focuses on Cornelia Culford, Lawrence Culfords sister, who we met briefly in A Rebel at Pennington's. She is attempting to rebuild her life, after leaving her controlling and unfaithful husband. Divorce at that time was very much frowned upon, and so for her, there is the very real possibility that she won't be granted the divorce, or that she could lose her beloved sons to her husband. Her sister-in-law Esther manages to get her job at Pennington's, enabling her to start building a more independent life where she can focus on herself and her children.

Stephen Gower is a broken man. He leaves his career at Scotland Yard behind as he joins the security team at Pennington's, running away from tragedy in his past. However as a detective he finds himself unable to ignore the murder of a young women. Joseph Carter and his wife Elizabeth draw him further into the unsolved case, as they request his help finding the murderer of Joseph's first wife.

Christmas at Pennington's enables us to catch up with our friends, Elizabeth and Joseph, Esther and Lawrence as well as introducing us to new characters Cornelia and Stephen. The female characters in this series are all strong, independent women who are fighting for their place in the world at a time when men are leading the way. I really enjoyed following Cornelia as she joined an already impressive group of women who know what they want, and will work hard to get it.

In addition we learn more about Bath, and more specifically Pennington's department store. Its opulence and character are even more pronounced in this novel, as it is dressed for Christmas and bustling with customers. I am already looking forward to the next novel in the series, to see where Pennington's takes us next!

I am more than happy to recommend this novel to you all. Whilst it can be read as a standalone, I think you'd be missing out on learning more about some really wonderful characters. So maybe go and grab yourself the series so far!

Thanks to Netgalley for my copy of this novel!

This is the third book in the Pennington series, but can easily be read as a stand alone. I read book one, but not two, and had no problem jumping into to three.

A beautiful, slow love story set in 1911 Bath, England, the author does a wonderful job of setting the scene with historical context. And experiencing our heroes find redemption and a second chance at happiness in life was lovely.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

This was the 3rd book in a series but I had no problem understanding the characters even though I had not read the others.

I enjoyed the story and how the characters came together to solve the mystery. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the department store Christmas decorations and shoppers.

I received an ARC from netgalley for my review and rating.

This is the third book that I've read in this series set in an English department store. Each of the books focuses on a particular couple but because there is a larger mystery that moves through all of them, it is best to read them in order.

Cornelia is a soon to be divorced woman who is working at the jewelry counter.  Stephen is a policeman on leave pending an investigation into his role in a case that went horribly wrong.  He's working security at the store.  Several people find out that he is from Scotland Yard and decide to enlist him in solving problems of their own.  He doesn't want to be involved in anyone's affairs but he finds himself being drawn in.

I like the setting of the books.  It is 1911.  That's isn't a time period I see represented a lot in historical fiction.  The backbone of this series is women who are trying to move themselves out of the domestic sphere that they have been pigeonholed in.  One is trying to run a business.  One is active in trying to get the vote.  One is trying to get away from an abusive husband.  I like seeing those perspectives.

I'm not a fan of the men in these books.  I really learned to despise the man who was the romantic lead of book one.  He's obsessed with finding out who murdered his first wife.  That's fine but it is turning him increasingly nasty which is an interesting story arc for a person who was supposed to be a hero.  He keeps saying that his first wife won't be able to rest in peace if he doesn't find her murderer.  I don't think that is how it works.  She doesn't care because she is dead.  You care, sir.

I wasn't a huge fan of the resolution of that story line either.  For the buildup it was over pretty quickly.  There was a connection between several victims that I have a hard time believing no one noticed.  "Oh, 50% of our group has been murdered?  Is that why we don't need as many refreshments at meetings?"

But if you are willing to let that go, it is an interesting look at a time and place.

Great series

A nice trio series which intertwines multiple characters centering around the elegant Pennington's store. Although each character's storyline are wrapped up nicely, they leave me wanting more in the series. One you enjoy the characters, it's hard to leave them behind.
