Agent of Magic #1

Infernal Assassin: Vampire Killer

Rate this book
A bloody ritual left my sister in a coma. I’m going to get her back. It’s been two years, seventeen days, and twelve hours since I discovered my sister’s body surrounded by witchcraft and black magic. She’s barely kept alive by machines – and if I can’t pay the bill this month, the mages at Fallen Oaks will pull the plug. So when my ex-employer shows up at my door with a possible cure, it’s tempting to slip back into my role as a killer for hire. One job, he tells me, and I could have the answers I need to save Cat for good. The only problem is, I’ll be working for vampires – the same soulless creatures I used to hunt. According to them, my mark is about to release a modified version of the wolf plague that will decimate the supernatural races. They say I’ll be doing the world a favor. I don’t care about the politics, I’m just trying to save my sister. But when I arrive in Belize with my vampire entourage, the mark isn’t what she seems, and the man protecting her is my ex-boyfriend. The same one who testified against me when the Trust took away my magic. Dominic freaking Finch. Wizard first class, ex-army badass, and a terrific kisser. And now, the only obstacle in the way of completing my mission. Thanks to him, I’m not allowed to use my arsenal of enchanted weapons, as decreed by the magical governing body we both used to work for. I’ve spent the last year at the bottom of a bottle, holed up with a baby dragon and a very grumpy faerie. But if I can prove who was really behind the ritual that destroyed my sister, I might just get my life back. For Cat to live, someone has to die. Luckily, I’m great at killing people. Titles in the Agent of Magic 1 - Infernal Vampire Killer 2 - Infernal Wolf Hunter 3 - Infernal Demon Slayer Infernal Vampire Killer is the first book in Agent of Magic, a thrilling urban fantasy series featuring a witchy heroine fighting a paranormal conspiracy. Natalia “Nat”, a/k/a Iron Heart (a name she despises) is a mage who has been trained as an assassin. She used to work for The Trust, the political organization that controls all things magical, but she was kicked out when they found her moonlighting as a mercenary. She was also placed on probation because she was found at the scene of a blood sacrifice – dark magic that is outlawed. However, her sister was the victim and is barely being kept alive while Nat is no longer allowed to use magic or associate with anyone from her past life. Its been two years, and Nat is running out of options to not only keep her sister alive but also find a way to bring her back from this comatose state.

Enter the Vampires – dead beings with no souls (and thus no magic of their own) that are incredibly seductive despite having a life-sucking aura around them. Nat knows not to trust them, but she is at the end of her options and decides to make a deal with the devil, literally: to save her sister she must kill a human.

It took me a bit to really get into his book – the beginning was a bit slow and I felt a little lost, like there was a back-story I hadn’t read. But I figured it out soon enough… what I didn’t get was Nat. She claimed her cardinal rule is “I don’t kill kids and I don’t end people who don’t have it coming.” So when the vampires tell her about a young girl who is a bio-terrorist, and that killing her will be the price for them saving her sister, you would think it would be a no-brainer. But her internal dialogue about deciding to help the vampires was described as an “unpleasant one” and she calls it an “unsanctioned murder, paid for in blood money.” But then she argues (to herself) that all the kills she made as a mercenary were a “counterbalance” to the unforgiveable things she did for the Trust. The Trust – we don’t get a lot of details about it or its policies, but we are eventually told some of those bad things that Nat did while in their employ. We are also told its morals and sense of justice are stilted, but Nat still thinks its continued existence is better for all concerned or the “world would fall into utter anarchy.” Based on the end of the book, I’m not sure how that is not happening regardless.

I think one character’s description of Nat sums her up perfectly: “if you weren’t such a high handed hypocrite I might like you.” We are told she so desperately wants to save her sister, but in two years it is like she did nothing. I also never got a feel for why she wanted to save her sister – yes, it could be because it was a blood relation, but without any flashbacks or moments of reflects showing that sisterly love and bond, it just seemed like an obligation or because of some guilt. Instead of using the past two years to figure out the why, how, what, etc., she kept her nose clean and slowly ran out of options. In the end, Nat was so desperate to save her sister, she never stopped to ask why all the events were unfolding the way they were. Later, she is told by another character to “use that big, beautiful brain of yours for once, instead of acting on impulse”, and I wish she had. The clues were there, I pegged the twist and then just watched it play out.

I may continue to read the series; I see a lot of potential. And this does end on a cliff-hanger, so don’t expect a nice neat ending. I think some world building and character/relationship development would really make this book soar.

Whoops. Sorry it took me so long to finish this and review it. I was really invested when I started reading this and didn't want to put it down, but then life took over as it has a habit of doing and I struggled to find the time to read. Curse real life for stopping me escaping into fictional life. *shakes fist*

I was pleasantly surprised by this. I'll admit, when I read that this was about vampires, werewolves, and other paranormal creatures I didn't have high expectations. I love paranormal books, but they're not exactly know for... quality. This however was well written, has a hispanic protagonist, strayed from the usual pitfalls paranormal books fall down (although it was still somewhat tropey) and the absolute best part of it is that it has a dragon in it. I'm a bit disappointed there wasn't more of the dragon, but that's just a personal qualm and not an actual fault of the book.

I was disappointed by the general putting down of women that appeared throughout this book. There was nothing major, and nothing I can describe better (because I forgot to save quotes, whoops) than coming across as a woman who has yet to unlearn the lessons the patriarchy taught her about her gender.

Other than that though I really enjoyed this and definitely want to continue on with the series.

Natalia Valdez is trying to cure her sister despite all the cards stacked against her. She used to be a prominent member of The Trust but was kicked out after it was discovered that Nat was doing some mercenary killing of vampires on the side. Everyone she knew turned their back on her, oh, and she was also accused of almost killing her sister, Cat, who is now in a coma. Willing to do anything to save Cat, she agrees to assassinate someone for the vampires in exchange for a cure. It doesn't go as planned.

I can't quite put my finger on why I didn't like this book as much as I should have given that it has a bunch of things that normally check my boxes. Badass female assassin, check. Fun magical creatures trying to help, check. MC trying to accomplish a morally "good" task by bending other moral rules, check. There is even a hunky love interest, but that actually complicated matters because I'm not sure I am on board with their dynamic. Also, I understand that when writing a book, the MC needs to have a dilemma or a problem to solve. I just think that Nat might have too many things to overcome. It was as if the authors had a list and said "what else can we have going against her?" and added it. Plus, by the end of the book, she has MORE problems, not less. It seemed a little much for me. However, it looks like ratings increase with the next book, so I'm willing to try one more. Maybe some of this chaos will resolve itself.

This is very much a YA fantasy, populated with witches, mage, vampires, werewolves and even a baby dragon. My biggest problem is the number of characters that go nowhere. We don’t need to know all about the five if they are not going to feature until the end of the book. The same applies to the various vampire houses. Meeting the werewolves was interesting as it sets up sympathy for their plight, but again this story goes nowhere in the current book. Together with the dreams and flashbacks, there are a lot of asides in this book, which punctuate and slow the action.

Natalia is a mage who originally worked for the Trust, which as an authority we know very little about. This for me is an omission, as a ruling organisation should be quite central and like the Hunger Games could be something the protagonist is pushing back at. Natalia is also a mercenary raising money to pay her sister Cat’s medical bills. We learn her sister has been cursed by black magic and Natalia has become the scapegoat. This sets up the main plot, where she takes a job to kill a female scientist who invented a virus which has infected the wolves.

Written in the first-person narrative, like most YA novels, it has the intimacy, but not the depth. This sort of approach relies on the circumstances of the story and the dialogue to give breadth and depth to the other characters. Findlay is perhaps the most fully formed as we know he is Cat’s fiancé and feels the pain of her illness and he obviously blames Nat for this. His spite and malice shine through his dialogue and his actions. The sinister and controlling nature of the vampires is also very good, but the brother and sister are too Twilight.

The ending is really disappointing as it finishes on a cliff-hanger rather than a satisfying ending. For me, this is a marketing ploy to buy the next book and exploits the reader. It is not uncommon with YA novels, but I don’t feel it is very ethical.

Nat is a complicated character. Acting as an assassin for the Trust to supposedly killed the dangerous creatures that threaten humans, she moonlit on the side to take down high impact figures when she found the Trust wasn't pure in their actions. Her own set of ethics aren't exactly clear cut, particularly when she must decide on working with the hated vampires for the chance to save her sister's life. Dubious morals aside, she finds herself caught in something much bigger than she ever dreamed.

Action and conflicted characters make the storytelling rich. I just wish there was some more world-building and in particular about the Trust. At the end there are hints that it is far more complicated than just a policing force as it is revealed Cat was very involved in its politics and trying to make it less conservative. That came out of left field and just doesn't go anywhere. The dragon was adorable but I wish there was more of it.

Left with a cliff hanger is ok, but some things just felt rough and could be a bit more polished.

Natalia Valdez used to be one of the top five assassins who worked for the Trust, the disciplinary committee entrusted to safeguard humans and semi-humans, until her sister was attacked and put into a coma and she was blamed for the crime through use of black magic. She lost not only her sister but her job, her colleagues and her weapons, whilst she was put on parole. She decided to go after a cure for Catalina, her beloved sister little knowing the plots brewing and into which she would be dragged. Accepting an offer for a one time job for her hated enemies the vampires in return for her sister's cure was to be her downfall. The vamps could not be trusted, they were ancient, powerful and evil, and she knew this, but she would do anything to save Cat! This first book in the series is very gripping, full of action between mages, humans, vampires, werewolves and demons, and it looks like the next book in the series will be nothing less, since this book ended on such a cliff hanger! So I am off to start book 2.

Book 75 Infernal Assassin by Melissa Hawke & Mason Drake. Agent of Magic book1. 4 stars and just a warning, it ends with a cliffhanger, which is not my favorite, but it is a trilogy so I can handle it.

Natalia Valdez wants to find a cure for her sister Kat's coma which was brought on my dark magic. Unfortunately, she was accused of being the one who hurt her sister when Kat's fiance found her over the body. Native was stripped of her wand and her identity as a member of The 5, vampire assassins for the Trust.

She's recruited by one of the vampire houses to assassinate a young female scientist who created a werewolf virus and is now believed to be creating a virus that will extinguish all supernaturals. But Nat will have to go through her ex and at least one other member of The 5 who are elite warrior and shes not allowed to use her magic or she will be executed.

Action packed, full of snark, with an engaging premise and plot.

Excitement at its finest!

Oh my goodness. This was absolute literary, supernatural candy!!!! Nat used to be one of the top five sanctioned killers for The Trust ... A sort of supernatural government. That is until she was set up and kicked out on her bum. After coming home to find her beloved younger sister Cat unconscious and bleeding in a scene straight from the movie Carrie... the LAST thing she expected was her sisters fiance to arrive and accuse her of the crime! Even less that everyone bought his tale! Her sister now in a magical coma, excommunicated and banned from using offensive magic she's desperate to find a cure for her sister Cat. Even if it means working with the vampires to get said cure. What she didn't expect were the levels of intrigue and betrayal along the way. A first class read, and oh so much fun intro into this new series! Well done indeed!!!

I really enjoyed this first book in the series. Natalia is tricked into working for vampires, as she needs to find a cure for her sister who had been in a coma for over two years. She is promised both a cure and a whole lot of money. Even if the promised cure is not forthcoming, there will be plenty of money for her sister's care. Natalia is told that the person she has to kill is evil and is not only responsible for the wolf virus which is currently spreading, but is planning on releasing a virus to kill all non-humans. She finds out almost too late that this is a lie. What she needs to do is somehow not only not kill her target, but also find the cure for her sister. I really hope that she succeeds in doing this.

It was okay, but a lot of weird sentence structure and words omitted. Also felt like the way all the MC’s background info. was presented wasn’t done very well. It was choppy and odd instead of what I assume the intent of the author was - unfolding the story in a suspenseful way.

I dislike books where the love interest is someone who’s already been on the scene and we don’t see the two fall for one another. If it’s being marketed as a romance, I expect romance.

I did decide to give book 2 a shot and only made it maybe 5 pages into the first chapter and gave it up. The 2 MCs argued like an old married couple, but with a lot of hard to follow assumptions and baggage attached. Not my thing.

It’s good, but...

It’s a good book, interesting characters, good people, bad, villains, betrayal... all the good stuff a reader wants. Sigh.... cliffhangers. Authors who force you to buy the next book are killing the genre. Ending a story and leaving loose ends for the next book is not so hard, is it? That’s the way writers used to write. Now it’s all about dragging more money out of the readers. This type of ransom does not make a devoted fan, it just makes me not want to buy even though I want to. It’s not like I don’t want to stay invested in the story but to buy the next book means more writers will also try this maddening grab for our wallets. Sadly, I’m out.

IIf you are looking for a good story filled with plenty of supernatural. You’ve come to the right place. Our authors wrote a well developed story. Because of that it did leave the building of the story slow but steady. I was 74% into the book before it got real exciting. I don’t think that should detour you from reading the book. It was needed to get introduced to a lot of key players and understand the history of “Ironheart”. It did end with a cliffhanger. But that only left me eager to read the next one. This was one of my favorite quotes from Natalia Valdez @When life hands you homicidal racist pieces of trash, you say thank you and beat them like a Bday piñata.”

We have some adventure, some suspense. I did feel like it took awhile to get into the story, but once you did it was good. I feel there should have Been a prologue or a novella first to give background on what had happen and who everyone was. This would have made the beginning of the story more interesting and able to understand what was happenIng.
Natalia Is the main character trying to save her sister, but nothing goes right. Who should she trust? Can she save her sister? Why does everything happen to her?

I liked this book. The author introduces many characters throughout the story in a way of world building. We meet characters to get an understanding of how things are in this world, but aren’t given a whole lot more. I’m hoping we get to know them all better in the coming books.
There’s plenty of action, fae, vampires, werewolves, political manoeuvring and betrayal to keep you interested, as well as a plot that has so many surprises and twists you may find yourself with raised eyebrows a lot lol.
There’s also dragons!! Who doesn’t love a dragon or two?

I really liked Natalia. She is sassy, strong determined and many people's idea of a pain in the a**. There were a few times it felt like she was missing the obvious but she spent most of the book in a chase scene and no one think their best all the time.
From the info in the summary, there was not near enough of the baby Dragon. Although the most annoying thing in my opinion was the huge cliff hanger at the end. I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book.

I really enjoyed Infernal Assassin.

The heroine is not quite an anti-hero, but she's deliciously flawed and her snark adds to the plot.

The story has elements of mystery, intrigue, action and adventure. I thought the world building was great. The book is well written, but be forewarned book 1 leaves us on a cliffhanger, which is exciting but not sure when book 2 is set to release.

With that said, I'd definitely check out more of the Agent of Magic series.

Enjoyable read and a good introduction to a new series. I enjoyed the fantasy characters, and they will obviously make more appearances in future books. While I want to continue with the series... The drawback for me was the cliffhanger. It came too soon. It made the whole thing feel as though it was a half novel, ended at a point deliberately to draw the reader to buy the next book. Now I realize that that is the point of any series. But most don't feel so manipulative when they do it.

First of all can I just say that Natalia Valdez is pretty badass, especially more so at the end of the book. She will do anything to help save her sister, even if it could cost her everything. I was gripped from the beginning of this book and loved all the characters that were introduced. I even ended up liking some of the bad guys! There was definitely a cliffhanger ending, but that has left me wanting to read the second book. Can't wait to read more from this author and series.

Mages, vampires, werewolves, and a highly controlled magical world.
It took a long time for me to get into the story, and to figure out who everyone was, and why they were relevant to the story. But... I made it through, and then the last quarter of the book I romped through, loving the story, and the developments.
And now I'm left with a cliffhanger.
Do I read book #2 in the series?
I assume the plot will move faster now that all the scene setting has been done?
What do you think?

Natalia Is the type of female main character I love - strong, independent and severely flawed but she knows it. She is fiercely loyal to the ones she loves and overall is just trying to survive while attempting to do some good. This book is fast paced and filled with action. I had a hard time putting it down and look forward to book 2

Natalia would do almost anything to find a cure for her sister after a ritual gone wrong leaves her in a coma. The beginning was a bit slow for me, but soon picked up and it was hard for me to put the book down. I really enjoyed this book and the twist at the end. My only complaint is with some of the information the author gives us, I feel like it needed a better backstory for it

This started out a bit slow and while reading I had to check to see if I was reading book 1 like I thought. I felt I was missing some key background information. And some of the missing pieces came together by the end, but not all. It still interested me and I enjoyed it so I'm ready for book 2. If I didn't like it enough, I'd certainly not continue on. But I'm excited to move to the next.
Enjoy
