"The late Andrew Fredericks was a firefighter in the City of New York Fire Department assigned to Squad Company 18 in Manhattan, one of five squad companies high inside the First World Trade Center tower rescuing people when it collapsed on September 11, 2001."
A collection of works written and published by Andrew Fredericks on evidence based and effective fire ground operations.
The articles focus primarily on technical aspects of equipment selection and tactics but it's filled with stories about a life in the firehouse. As the dates of the articles got closer to 2001 I had a growing sense unease, waiting for an accident I know is coming. The last article by Andy is written shortly before 9/11 and is a very personal reflection on the recent deaths of several firefighters during a business fire. He goes through the details of the entire day, running regular calls, arriving at the fire and digging firefighters out of the collapse, and finally making it home to his family.
I needed and enjoyed the human displays of doubt, frustration, and love in these writings.
