Like the secret love child of Dirty Harry and Martha Stewart, Brick Ransom is a rookie cop with a taste for fine dining and zero patience for slovenly deadbeats and criminal scum.
In the middle of a rare Northwest blizzard, Brick is forced to cut his dinner short in order to protect three key witnesses – a bookkeeper, a stripper, and a deadly assassin – all of whom are set to testify against Seattle crime boss Frank Mason the next morning. When a gunman ambushes the first witness en route to his downtown hotel, and Brick’s partner is killed in the crossfire, it’s quickly apparent that moles within the police force are leaking the whereabouts of each witness back to Mason in a last-ditch effort to keep the criminal kingpin from ever standing trial.
As the storm worsens, and the city freezes to a standstill, it’s up to Brick Ransom to protect the last two witnesses, outwit Frank Mason’s team of killers and crooked cops, and do his best to ignore his growling stomach, all while struggling to contain his growing fascination with Witness #2.
With its signature blend of dark humor and page-turning action, Seattle On Ice is Mike Attebery’s most exciting book yet!
Mike Attebery is the author of ten novels, including The Grimwood Trilogy, Chokecherry Canyon, Firepower, Seattle On Ice, Bloody Pulp, and Rosé in Saint Tropez. He lives with his family on an island off the coast of Washington State.
It's snowing in Seattle, there's corruption at every turn & Ransom needs a good meal. This was a fun read for a weekend. A cop trying to keep witnesses safe for a big trial the next day is difficult enough but our cop, Ransom is having to do so in a snow storm of epic proportions not knowing who he can trust & on a very tense run. The action was vivd & very much like watching a movie (especially the library & market chases). The characters were well drawn & honestly, I was very much a fan of all the food references. I wanted a bowl of Mrs. Ransom's beef stew with warm bread (no offense to the divine osso bucco or onion tartlet). When your cop is channelling Martha Stewart-isms to get him through his travails, I think that's pretty special. This isn't going to change your life or anything but it is darned entertaining. I suggest having good food & wine nearby.
We follow Police Officer Brick Ransom of the Seattle PD one wintery evening as he single handedly protects the key witnesses in a trial against the local crime boss who has issued orders to permanently prevent them from testifying. Not only does Brick have to fight off relentless hitmen, but also an ill tempered Mother Nature, and if that’s not bad enough, every crooked cop in the city.
This was an enjoyable ‘Die Hard’ kind of romp through Seattle. I liked the local elements sprinkled throughout as Brick raced around the city. A juvenile but charming cop thriller that leaves you chuckling and shaking your head. The big reveal was telegraphed from the very beginning but you can’t get bogged down in the details of this kind of story. Even though this is the start of a series, it could be treated as a stand alone novel since there is a clear resolution, no cliffhanger. Yippie ki-yi-yay, MF!
I loved this so much more than the first Ransom story I read (I don't know what order they go in and am not sure it matters). There are some typos and a couple made me do a double take to get the part right, but the story and characters are so great I didn't remove a star. This is my kind of story and humor.
First thing I want to comment on is the glaring lack of gratuitous sex. Thank you Mike. It was a good story without the detailed sex scenes writers of every genre have to insert. Suspenseful and briskly paced. Except when Brick waxed poetic about food. And I swear I had to stop reading in sympathy for him, when he was so hungry and his stomach tumbled, and go eat.
I choose the book because of the Seattle setting. It was chock full of Seattle location references which helps the reader familiar with Seattle picture the action. The action was pretty unbelievable.
I found this e-book on Book Bub. The price was right, it was set in Seattle, so I got it. Aside from the extremely improbable weather and the nasty attitude toward overweight people, it was a decent story. But the writing was substandard.
At one point I was cursing out loud as I read. Brick is amazing and he's so easy to root for. The action was page turning and the twists were predictable but written in such a way I didn't mind.
What do a bookkeeper, a librarian, and a hit man have in common? All three are witnesses that can put Seattle’s top crime boss behind bars for life. His minions are trying to eliminate them. In almost blizzard conditions Brick Ransom is collecting the three and taking them to a safe, secure location. There are crooked cops and a pretty stupid mayor who refuses to salt the roads making driving a hazard, and the car crashes are amazing. This book is wonderful; it could be a Bruce Willis movie there is so much action. This was my first Brick Ransom novel and I enjoyed it so much I ordered two others when I finished reading it.
Aside from the incredibly implausible freezing of Green Lake, this crime rampage through Seattle was delightful. One other problem (probably only for a librarian) was a librarian character heaving special collections tomes at an assassin. Most of us would rather die than damage a rare book. The plot was fairly predictable, but that is OK when the characters are interesting and the action is hot and nonstop. This book is not literary but it doesn't pretend to be.

I found this book to be a very good read even with the totally implausable thought of Green Lake freezing. It is a good story featuring rookie cop Brick Ransom we follow him in his quest to keep the three witnesses safe from pretty much everybody. A very enjoyable read for fans of Action/Crime books.
The story was highly improbable, the main character missed two glaring 'tells' that the reader doesn't (making the story easy to guess and boring), and the author exhibits a disdain for overweight people, mentioning the weight of at least 7 other characters (including the main character calling a child 'fatso')
I was surprised I liked this as I don't normally care for this type of read. I did like that Seattle is a main character. I got this for free in 2011. I can picture the places he mentions in the book. I enjoyed the action set in the library. (Except for the book destruction, lol) I loved the cops from Rochester on the Ducks, and lots of things. Good book.
Good story about Brick Ransom, a rookie cop, who takes on the job of keeping 3 witnesses safe against just about everybody, including fellow police officer. This story was written after the previous Ransom novel but the action really takes place much before it.
This book is one big bundle of silliness. Ludicrous escapes, miraculous bullets, you name it. If you want a read to not think to this would be it. That being said if you can shut your brain off you may enjoy it.
A lot of bad words, I enjoyed the story set in Seattle, as I use to live there and am familiar with the area. It kept my attention, so I would say it was suspenseful.
A clever twist to the story's setting makes this a fast-paced read. Not my usual genre, but thoroughly enjoyed Attebery's style of writing and the story!
