Stanley's people go out a lot. Stanley is a good dog, but one night, while his people are away, the temptation becomes too great and he sneaks up onto the couch. What a wonderful experience! Soon he's also blasting music, dancing around the living room and raiding the fridge -- Stanley's never had so much fun! But something is missing and after a couple of weeks Stanley realizes that partying alone has lost its thrill.
I was born and grew up in Winnipeg —a daydreamer with her nose in a book. In my twenties, I traveled around the world, mostly by ship. Later, I moved to Vancouver, where I earned a B.A. and M.Ed. at the University of British Columbia. Among my jobs were travel agent, college teacher, instructional designer and editor.
For years, I dabbled with writing. But I didn't begin to write in earnest until I had two young daughters. My first book was published in 1992, and I have since written more than thirty others, including novels, picture books and non-fiction.
I live in Vancouver, a short walk from the sea. I write full-time and still love to travel, read and daydream. - Source

Jake's Review: I really like the Stanley books as they always make me laugh. Stanley is always getting into trouble but he is not a bad dog. This one is very easy to read and even though they are written for the midget, I still like looking at them. The pictures are really funny to look at too. Mom scored me a signed copy of it too which is kinda sic.
Jake's Rating: 9/10
Mom's Review: The story is delightfully charming and the illustrations are classic Slavin. So much expression and attention to detail in the illustrations that even those who have not yet learned to read, can understand the story. I love Stanley he is so wonderfully charming and naughty -- sort of reminds me of Jesse. The storyline is imaginative and unique and really makes you wonder what your pets do when you are not home. It is a fast paced story with plenty of fun moments and nice morals cleverly hidden within. This is another one that we used to read to Jake over and over. It is the perfect book for the young and young at heart. I also highly recommend this one for story-time and a must have for all libraries. The kids will laugh at Stanley's wild antics - also check out Stanley's Wild Ride for further Stanley adventures.
This is such an adorable book. Made me laugh the whole way through. If you have a dog that likes to "sneak" up on the couch, you will like this book. I definitely think children of all ages will like this book because mainly it is a story from the dog's point of view-what child doesn't like that? It also has great, colorful illustrations. Plus, it has a "sneaky" message in it. Not so forward as to bore the kid reading it. The message: Don't do something you are not supposed to do because in the end you will get caught.
Have you ever wondered what dogs do while you are gone? Stanley knows the answer to that. Stanley is forbidden from sitting or laying on the couch like most dogs, but soon Stanley starts to see a pattern with his owners always going out for long periods of time. Stanley is very clever, and definitely clever enough to learn that maybe, just maybe he can get away with hanging out on the couch or stealing food from the kitchen without getting caught while his owners are gone. What starts out with an innocent relaxing and playful time on the couch and stealing of food in the kitchen progresses into a full blown dog party. Will Stanley get caught? For anyone who has ever been out and come home to their dog laying on the couch and looking guilty, this is for you!
Adventure-loving dog Stanley starts off by sneaking parties.
That means, just him. Partying while his people are out. Stanley plays music and dances. One night he even figures out how to break into the fridge. Hoo-ha!
Soon Stanley invites his friends to party along with him: Alice, Oscar; Mable and Digger and Gassy Jack. Then guess who else shows up? More dogs:
They filled the rooms. They packed the stairs. They flowed out onto the porch and lawn. Drooling dogs. Dainty dogs. Dogs that needed a bath.
Have fun with this story, Goodreaders. It's a FIVE STAR adventure, with words by Linda Bailey and pix by Bill Slavin.
I thought this book was really cute. It is about a little dog named Stanley who likes to have fun while his owners are out of the house at night. He listens to music, dances, and eats lots of food. Eventually, Stanley ends up throwing a big party, but that's the night his owners come home early. Stanley gets in big trouble, and he has to help clean the whole house.
Stanley is a good dog, and knows he's not to get on the couch. One night while his humans were out, Stanley got on the couch, and nothing happened. Before he knew it Stanley was getting braver and braver with his antics, and finally invited his friends, and their friends, and their friend's friends to the biggest house party ever. What happens next only your own dog can tell you.
Stanley's Party is a book about a dog whose owners go out every night and leave him alone. Stanley decideds to host a party for all the dogs in his neigborhood and eventually gets into trouble. By doing so, stanley gets to then go out with his owners each time they leave, but not without making Stanley one of the most popular dogs on the block.
It all started when usually obedient Stanley craws up on the couch, something forbidden by his people. It triggers a series of events that culminates in a party that dogs are still talking about. A fun book for anyone who has ever contemplated what their dog does all day. Illustrations by Bill Slavin add to the festivity of the text.
Stanley the dog wasn't allowed on the couch but he was often left home alone. One night he was by himself he decided to sit on the couch, then each night he was home alone he tried something new that he was not allowed to do. Eventually, he wanted friends to share his fun - and that got seriously out of control. The end result changed his life. Fun story and illustrations.
This story reminded me of American teenagers who throw raging parties in movies when parents go out. Such a fun read even though Hafsa kinda lost interest halfway through and kept popping in between read.
Home alone one evening, Stanley explores what happens when he sneaks onto the couch – it was even better than he ever dreamed! Pretty soon he parties every night alone, but realizes something is missing – friends! Stanley must also keep his new lifestyle a secret from “his people”.
Review:
Stanley’s Party Written by Linda Bailey Illustrated by Bill Slavin
Bailey’s best works are Good Times Travel Agency Adventures and the Stanley the dog series; both illustrated by fellow Canadian Slavin. Slavin won twenty-six awards, nine for Stanley’s Party, and Bailey won twenty-two as of 2008 (CANSCAIP,2007;Bailey and Slavin,2007).
Stanley’s Party was the first in the series, and answers the question all dog-owners ask – what do they do when they’re alone? Stanley tests his waters first by taking a seat on the couch, having the best night ever, and doesn’t even get caught! Soon he’s blasting music, raiding the fridge, and eventually hosts a full-blown dog party!
The intended audience is K-2 with complex sentence structures and some repetition. Overall Stanley’s good dog and the storey develops his character even more, at first as an explorer, then lonely, and finally a party animal!
The plot is strong and quickly builds with anticipation. It’s an exciting read-aloud as the voices have potential to be funny. Children are generally intrieged by animals, dogs especially, and the way Stanley acts as a member of the family, paired with the excitement of getting caught, appeals to children while adults can appreciate the humour. The scene Stanley invites dogs to his party contains a lot of white space and the illustration goes off the page leaving the impression that there are more dogs involved than can be seen. Conversely, the dog-party is full of action. The text says every kind of dog is present, while the illustration shows them in hilarious situations, conveying a wild party!
Slavin’s curved lines give the dogs a friendly appearance, conveying them as members of the family with human traits. His watercolours and ink add a cartoonish texture.
I highly recommend this book for young independent readers and as a read-aloud as both children and adults will enjoy the humour.
This book is about a dog that does all the things he is not supposed to do whenever his owners are away. After a while of doing it by himself, he invites all his do friends over. They throw a huge party with dogs from everywhere. However, Stanley’s owners got home early this night and had to clean up for 2 days straight. His owners never again left him home whenever they went out. But Stanley’s party story made it all over the world and every dog still talks about it to this day.
Activity: In the Story Turramurra and Timbuktu are metioned. Get out a world atlas or use an online mapping program to show them. Turramurra is in New South Wales, Australia. Timbuktu is in Oregon, USA. This book will be an entrance into studying places around the world. I will bring books in from the library so that students can do a book study. They will each pick a place around the world and do a report on it, once they are finished we will talk about them and then begin my lesson on different areas around the world.
Personal Reaction - I like this book very much because the dog in this story is very cute. Because this book sets a the dog as a main character, it would be more familiar to children and they would learn something from this story very pleasantly. As a dog person, I will remember this story forever.
Purposes- Read aloud to first graders of elementary school for several potential purposes: - The illustrations are very colorful and it would catch children's attention while reading it. - This book uses personification as the dog, Stanley, cleans the cough, and talks. - This book has onomatopoeia, for example, "Rrrrff", "Bark-de-bark-bark" and "Burp." - The story of it would teach children that you should not do what you are not supposed to do. First graders like doing something are not allowed. Even, that age group has egocentrism, which means they think they are in the center of the world, and see it through their perspectives. Thus, this story would give them the important lesson.
Before starting, ask the children if they have ever wanted to do something so badly (even though they know they aren’t allowed) that they did it anyway? What happened? Discuss. Introduce Stanley, and explain that the story is all about a dog who can’t help his own curiosity and breaks the rules because of it. Examine the front cover together. Can the children guess what Stanely does wrong? While looking at the cover, ask the children where they think the story takes place. Which dog do they think is the main character? Why? How does he look?
Personal Reaction: I really enjoyed reading this book. It was engaging, humorous, and the illustrations were fun to look at. I think kids will really enjoy this book!
Purposes: Read a loud for enjoyment. -This story would be a fun book to read to K-3rd grade students. -Rich language: vocabulary such as: entranced, waltzing, tango. Teacher could ask the students if they know what sort of dance waltzing, and tango are. -The illustrations usually fill up the whole page, which makes the book more engaging. There is a lot going on in the pictures, so kids will enjoy looking at them and following along with the story.
This is the story of Stanley, a dog who discovers that although he is not supposed to be on the couch, if he does it while his owners are away, they don't even know about it. Once he figures this out, he realizes he can do all sorts of things while they are away so long as he finishes before they get home. So he decides to have a party, because what could go wrong??? He didn't count on his owners comeing home early!
This book is so cute! While Stanley's owners are gone he realizes that he can get away with things that he usually wouldn't be able to. Laying on the couch and stealing a little snack from the fridge eventually turns into a party with all the dogs in town! Stanley ends up getting caught but everyone always remembers the party! This is a funny book that children can use to make predictions about what Stanley will do next!
I really liked this book, it was about a sad dog who stays home and starts breaking his people's rules like sitting on the couch. One thing leads to another and he ends up throwing a party that doesn't exactly end well before the book finishes with a happily ever after for everyone involved.
I found it entertaining and definitely would share this with anyone with a love of dogs, reading or parties.
Stanley is such a good boy at the beginning of the book. He doesn't like to be home alone and not do anything. So he tries getting up on the couch. Great, the couch is so comfortable. Then he watches tv, eats the food in the frig., and listens and dances to the music on the radio. He realizes that he is still alone and he asks his friends to come over and have a party. That's when things get crazy. I love Stanley and his friends and the pictures are great.
What do dogs do when their owner is gone? That's what the author was thinking when she wrote this book. This is one of my favorite books to read a loud to second graders. Stanley really knows how to have a fun time--he lolls on the couch, he munches from the fridge and he sashays and shimmies to the music.
Stanley is a good dog, but one night while his people are out late, he really wants to sits on the couch. So he goes for it, which leads to lots of other things: dancing, eating out of the fridge, and even a massive party! The one night his people come back early, he gets caught. Read this book to find out what happens to Stanley.
Fun and busy book about a dog, Stanley, who discovers that he does not get into trouble after lying on the couch when his owners are away, which is forbidden, but he tidies up just ebfore they return home. He then proceeds to test this further with other actions, inlcuding raiding the fridge. This continues until he has a party for his friends ...
Oh, that Stanley. He is such an every-dog. This was a cute book, and Stanley was very lovable in his antics. The kids laughed at the mischief Stanley got into, and they enjoyed the pictures of Stanley and his friends whooping it up at the party. I don't think you can go wrong with this one, especially if you have ever shared your home with a dog!
