Romance and rivalry in London’s East End Business may be healthy for Arthur Milton ’s Hackney bakery, but the atmosphere behind the counter is tense. Agnes Handly cannot hide her hatred for Arthur’s young wife Ellen – a loathing fuelled by the feelings she has long held for the baker. Ellen meanwhile, is starting to have doubts about her relationship with Arthur. When her parents died in a house fire, it was Arthur, her father’s best friend, who took her in. Afraid of facing the world alone, she decided to marry a decision with consequences she is only just beginning to understand. And when her attraction to a man her own age intensifies, will she follow her heart, or be faithful in her duty? The Ragamuffins is packed with unforgettable characters and will delight readers of Annie Murray, Catherine Cookson and Rosie Goodwin.

It is a book I have read in the past just after publication and have wanted to re-read for a few years but could never find it in my local libraries. The story of 14 year old Mickey and his 8 year old sister Molly and their fight to survive since escaping the workhouse where they are sent following their parents death and the problems that they encounter especially the want to find safe accommodation, work for Mickey and escape from the pervert who wants Molly is compelling and coupled with all the side stories that have such an impact and relevance on the story of Mickey and Molly makes for an excellent read.
Hard to put this book down. It kept my Interest throughout. Anna King presents a story that touches on the depravity of humankind but in the end kindness and love triumph. Great Read!
