About the author

Balakumaran was born in Pazhamarneri village near Thirukattupalli in Thanjavur district in 1946. As a child, he was highly inspired by his mother, who was a Tamil scholar and a Siromani in Sanskrit, used verses of Sangam and other ancient literature to motivate him when ever he was emotionally down. This created a deep interest in Tamil literature which made literature his passion. His first stories were published in a literary magazine called ‘Ka-Sa-Da-Tha-Pa-Ra’ and for which he was also a founding member, a self-anointed militant literary journal that had been launched with a mission to blaze new trails in modernist literature.

He has also contributed to Tamil periodicals such as Kalki, Ananda Vikatan, Saavi and Kumudam. Later he became a famous Tamil writer, author of over 200 novels, 100 short stories, and dialogue/screenplay writer for over 14 films. His writings are noted for a distinct philosophical and religious tone. He is fondly called 'Ezhuthu Sithar' by his fans. He is a disciple of "Sri Yogi Ram Surath Kumar".

In his many novels he shows immense interest in enlightenment. He is considered as "Maanasiga Guru" for many individuals, who are in search of the formless almighty. His lucid but powerful expressions of man-woman relationship and human-God union is a tribute to mankind.

இரண்டாம் பாகத்தில் கோவில் கட்டும் பணிகளை விளக்க ஆரம்பித்த ஆசிரியர் மூன்றாம் பாகத்தில் கோவில் கட்டும் பணிகளில் யார் யாருடைய பங்கு என்ன என்னவென்று தெளிவாய் விளக்கியிருந்தார் . கோவில் கட்டும் பணியுடன் அருண்மொழி வர்மன் அரியணை ஏறிய கதையும் , ஆதித்த கரிகாலன் கொலையுண்ட மர்மத்தையும் அவர் பாணியில் கற்பனை கலந்து எழுதி இருப்பார் .மீண்டும் மீண்டும் ஜாதிய பிரச்னைகளை பற்றியே விவரிக்கும் ஆசிரியர் நாவலின் இறுதியில் கருவூர் தேவர் முலம் அனைத்திற்கும் தீர்வு சொல்லி பிரெச்சனைகளை மிக எளிதாக முடிக்கும் ஒரு ஆரம்பத்தை வைத்திருப்பது கண்டிப்பாக ஒரு genius டச் .இனி வரும் பாகங்களில் அதிரடி ஆரம்பிப்பதற்கான அறிகுறிகள் அத்தனையும் இந்த மூன்றாம் பாகத்தில் தெளிவாக தெரிகிறது . மற்ற இரண்டு பாகங்களை போல இந்த் நாவலும் விறுவிறுப்பு குறையாமல் இருந்தாலும் நான் படித்த அந்த நாவலின் பதிப்பில் தொகுத்து வழங்கிய விதம் படிப்பதற்கு மிகவும் கஷ்டமாக இருந்தது . அத்தியாய பிரிப்பில் தவறு இருக்கிறது என்று நாவலை ஒதுக்கி விட வேண்டாம் என்று சொல்வதற்காகவே நான் இதை இங்கு குறிப்பிடுகிறேன் .

The facts mentioned in the book are really commendable and shows the extent of research done by the author. However am suspicious about the liking its gonna earn from hardcore Ponniyin Selvan fans, cz some of the key characters like vanathi, kunthavai and periya pirattiyar are manipulated according to the context and convenience of the author, which was something difficult to sync in (atleast to me). But am astounded by the intense liking it's earned throughout...

முழு அர்ப்பணிப்பின்றி செய்யப்படும் எந்த ஒரு பணியும் பிரச்சினையின்றி முழுமையாக முடிவது எளிதல்ல. தஞ்சை பெரிய கோவில் போன்ற ஒரு மிகப்பெரிய கோவிலை கட்ட வேண்டுமென்றால், அதுவும் இதுவரை இல்லாத வடிவில் மிகப்பெரிய கோபுரத்தை கட்ட வேண்டுமெனில் அது எளிதல்ல. அதற்கு எல்லா வகையிலும் ஒத்துழைப்பு வேண்டும் என்பதை உணர்ந்து உடையார் தான் ஏன் இந்த கோவிலை கட்டுகிறேன் என்பதை அரசவைக்கு எடுத்துக்கூறிய விதத்தை நேரில் இருந்து பார்த்தால், கடவுள் நம்பிக்கை உள்ளவர்கள் அனைவரும் கண்ணில் நீர் வைத்துக்கொள்வார்கள் என்பது உறுதியான ஒன்று. ஒவ்வொரு நிகழ்ச்சியையும் விளக்கியிருக்கும் விதம், நம்மையும் அந்த கூட்டத்தில் ஒருவனாக ஆக்கிவிடுகிறது.

ஒரு கோவில் கட்டும் பணி ஒரு மிகப்பெரிய கலாச்சார மாற்றத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியிருக்கிறது என்பது மட்டும் உறுதியாகத் தெரிகிறது. ஒவ்வொரு பக்கத்தையும் ஒரு வரியாக எழுதிக்கொண்டே போகலாம். மொத்தத்தில் சுவாரஸ்யம் மிக அதிகமாக தொற்றிக்கொண்டது. அடுத்த பாகத்தை உடனே ஆரம்பிக்க வேண்டும் என்ற அவாவை தந்துவிட்டது

Unlike the previoius 2 parts that focused on events, this part focuses more on characters. The author describes the characters of the king, his son and panchavan maadhevi in detail along with several critical events that lead to their behavior in a particular manner. Much of this part is also devoted some of the skirmishes that rose amongst the different castes while building the temple. Overall, a very good read and kudos to the author who has kept up the tempo in part 3 of the series as well!

Like the previous parts of this novel, this part has been really good. The introduction of the characters blends well along the story line. The pace has also been maintained throughout. The only concern about this part is that there were a few spelling mistakes and sentence repeats at various parts that the publishers could have been careful about. For the rest of it, amazing read!

Compared to Volume 2 of this series, Volume 3 is fast moving with good portion of the story on move. The last part of the book is very thrilling where the murder plot of Chola prince Aditya unfolds and the guilty ones are tracked for punishment.

On the temple part, progress is made with respect to moving huge boulders and the associated engineering challenges. Overall, very good volume.

3 parts over...Still 3 ahead...The big journey with "Udayar Sri Raja Raja Thevar"...

Udayar 3 is more technical compared to udayar 1 and 2, as civil engineering and the stategies followed to bring in things with ease gets explained here. The idea of using a bow shaped chariot for transporting big rocks and the way it is explained is quiet too good. But if there has been some pictorial representation of the same in the book it would have been great imagining things.

The book also talk about karumar's side of things, andhanar explanation on what they feel for the effort. Though the politics of different caste are explained with having some preconceived perception, we can take it the way balakumaran has written since he has not cornered one particular set of people over others. But how politics can be looked up by people in the way they want can very well be understood. Also one can understand how people around leaders try to put their interest up front and how cunning politics could be.

It also tells lot about people of tanjore at the time and also about people from different parts of chola dynasty feeling jealous about tanjore. There are also economics lessons that the story offers and if you could not imagine how a place becomes over populated, how the development starts and is taken forward then this would be good book for you.

Though the book has lot of good things, but compared to first two books that talks mostly things around temple building, this goes a bit out and talks more about people. Though this is specified as pro of the book, it also reduces the pace of the book and hence one could feel a bit boring and taking more time to finish this book compared to others. Some how history of young krishraman leading to young arulmozhivarman and panjavanmadevi, explaining how they met and how arul mozhi came to power felt like not being effectively dealt. I felt it could have been narrated the way it was done in part 1 by sembiyan madevi.

Of-course as my review of previous books history lovers should go for it and for people who are interested in knowing on politics of the past and about ancient generation this is a definite read.

இந்தப் புத்தகத்தை நான் மறக்க மாட்டேன். ஏனென்றால், இதைப் படிக்கும் போதுதான் பாலகுமாரன் மறைந்தார். அவருடைய எழுத்துக்கள் என்றும் வாழும்.

இராஜராஜன் நமது பெருமை

மழித்த தலையும், ஒற்றை ஆடையுமாய் சந்திர மல்லி நின்ற கோலம் பார்த்து விட்டு சக்ரவர்த்தி வாய்விட்டு அலறியபோது என் கண்களில் நீர் கட்டிற்று.

சக்ரவர்த்தி வெறுத்துப் பார்த்துவிட்டு திரும்பவும் வெளியே வந்து வாள் உடுத்தி பாதரட்சை போட்டு மணிமுடி தரித்து, வாள் உருவி புத்த விஹாரத்தில் நின்று தன்னுடைய வாளை உயர்த்திப் பிடித்து கேடயத்தில் வேகமாகத் தட்டி சோழம்... சோழம்... என்ற கத்த வீரர்கள் வெறித்தனமாய் எதிரொலித்தார்கள் என்று படிக்கும்போது நமக்கும் வெறியேருகிறது.

ரிக், யஜூர் ஆகியவையே வேதங்கள், தேவாரம் திருவாசகம் எல்லாம் குப்பைகள் என்று அந்தணர்கள் கூக்குரல் விடுக்கும் போது, ஶ்ரீ ராஜராஜத்தேவர் வாள் உருவி எவன்டா அது என்று கோபப்படும் இடம்... அப்பப்பா...

Definitely better than part 2 and things revolving around each community from their perspective is very well detailed. Readers has to live virtually in Chola period and anyone who thinks current situation and read will surely find it boring. Looking forward to Part 4.

Awesome part of history

Very good read. It deals with complex part of history including the Caste differences, how one caste oppressed the other, how those involved in suppressing other castes could go far to an extent of demolishing kingdoms. Author has written it in a way that it is a part of history and how good kingdoms overcome these challenges.

The pace slows down in this novel, when compared to the first and second one. Having said that, the novel is still a good one to complete.

Verdict: Udayar-3 gets the typical bashing every sequel in a series faces. It still survives and provides readers a plot to look upon, sets the stage for a next part very well.

மூன்று பாகங்களாகியும் கோயில் இன்னும் அஸ்திவாரம் கூடப் பெறவில்லையே என்று ஒரு ஏக்கம். ராஜ ராஜன் இளம் வயதில் அப்படியே ராஜேந்திரனைப் போல் இருக்கிறார். சில சமயம் யாரைப்பற்றிப் படிக்கிறோம் என்றே தெரியாத அளவுக்கு ஒற்றுமை. விறுவிறுப்பு குறைவென்றாலும் புத்தகத்தின் இறுதியில் பழைய வேகம் பிடிக்கிறது.
