Pagano Brothers #3

Accidental Evils

Rate this book
As an enforcer for the Pagano Brothers, Tony Cioccolanti’s life is steeped in violence. For the most part, he feels no burden on his soul for the blood he spills or the pain he inflicts. He is a soldier, and blood and pain are the wages of war.

Yet one terrible mistake haunts him, in his dreams and in his waking hours.

Billy Jones has moved to Quiet Cove, the place of her happiest memories, to start a business and fulfill a dream. Having summered in the Cove through most of her childhood, she understands about the Pagano Brothers and their control of the town. Their interest in her nightclub doesn’t surprise her—nor does the “protection” payment they demand. The glowering goombah who visits her club regularly, however—he surprises her plenty.

She was not prepared for the attraction between them.

As Tony and Billy draw closer, Tony’s violent life, and the Pagano Brothers’ brutal world, explodes on the streets of the Cove.

War has come, and its wages are due.

I was born and raised in the Midwest, but I was transplanted into the dusty soil of Northern California and have apparently taken root there. An inveterate geek and gamer, I am a fan of many things considered pop culture and maybe even lowbrow.

As a reader, my favorite genres are science fiction and fantasy, but as a writer, I've found my home in romance--or perhaps it's better to say simply "love stories." I have a yen to try other genres, too, at some point, but for now my muse wants to tell stories about lovers and families.

I write for the joy of it, and I write stories that I want to read. If others like them, too, that's just the cherry on top. I’m not interested in rules and formulae. I follow my muse and my characters and let them take me where they want to go, wherever that might be. I like big emotions, dark and light.

I like complicated characters with flaws and weaknesses as well as strengths, and I like each character’s strengths and weaknesses to be different from those of other characters. I’m much more concerned that my characters be interesting and diverse than that they be widely considered to be likable. I try to create people, not types.

Likewise, I want my stories each to be distinct from the others. Once I’ve told a story, I don’t want to tell it again. So even within a series, one of my books might be very different from the next. Some might be very dark, others equally mild.

That isn’t to say there aren’t trends and recurrences in my work. I’m drawn to certain themes and settings, and my muse has her favorite toys and tools. But I guard against those tendencies becoming a formula.

This book is my favourite in the whole series. I loved both Tony and Billy as characters and I also enjoyed the plot that developed alongside their relationship because this series offers continuity for the conflict that started in book one.
(But I think if you just wanna read this one it should be fine- although I enjoyed all the books more due to the fact that they were connected and you would be missing some general background)

This is one of the most authentic mafia stories that I’ve read. I mean, not godfather type of authentic because it’s still a romance novel but this actually felt like it could happen in real life.

I don’t know what that says about me but I absolutely loved Tony, the hero. A bit of background on him:
He joined the “organisation” because the lifestyle actually fit him. He has a bit of a bully personality, meaning he is a hothead and he enjoys taking out his frustrations on whoever is unlucky enough to cross his path, BUT he is not needlessly cruel nor completely amoral. He starts out as a lowly associate/soldier but he proves that he is more than muscle and brawn and he can be quite capable in high pressure situations that require critical thinking and quick decision making.

Being in the mafia and climbing the ranks is very much a game of saying the right things and being useful to the top guy. We see Tony being jealous of Trey (the Don’s nephew who is a half-blood as they call him - and he still gets privileges that are above his station while Tony, even with extra experience and skills is still doing some of the grunt work) which makes his character very real. We also get to see Tony admire the Don and get noticed by him which elevates his position during the book.
Basically, what I’m trying to paint here is a character who is very real despite his profession. He has insecurities and weaknesses. He can also be vindictive and merciless. And after all that he is also good-hearted and soft (although he’d never admit that) when he deals with people he admires and loves.

Now, the heroine, Billy is everything a guy like Tony could need and want and the reverse would be correct as well. Initially, she struggles with the awareness that she is attracted to a guy who kills without a second thought. The difference between bad boys and bad men is often quoted in this argument and she was trying to see which one Tony was. He had multiple opportunities to cross lines with her and considering his reputation and penchant for violence, he didn’t show anything but patience. Now, there were a few incidents but they only served to show that Billy can hold her own and that made Tony like her even more. He was looking for someone who is not a pushover but also not with an explosive personality because he had that for both of them.

I absolutely loved their chemistry
. Their way of talking to each other, their intimate scenes as well, were an extension of their personality as well as the passion/feelings they had for each other. This was perhaps one of the best portrayals of a relationship (mafia background notwithstanding), the way it starts, develops, the doubts, the arguments and by the end, the unbreakable bond that forms.

Can I say once again how much I loved this couple?!

Also, the writing was top notch, the pacing, the side character and the overall plot only made this story complete and better.

I finished the whole series at this point and I can say with certainty that this was my favourite book - while I think it can be read on its own, I recommend the series as a whole (not all books are as great- but none is bad) because it spans many mafia conflicts, a lot of characters, a lot of loss, sadness, emotion but also provides a lot of beautiful insight into the age-old question about one’s purpose in life, what makes a person who they are and how do you judge bad and good.

I’ve been thinking about this series and this book since I finished it so yeah, it was a good one.

The first time the main characters met, the heroine stabbed the hero without second thoughts because he got too close and all over her personal space. That’s when I knew I’m gonna like her!

After reading the first book, I was tempted to jump into this one since I’ve heard that it’s the best in the series. And I definitely enjoyed this one more. One of the major things I enjoyed in this one is that both the main characters were equal. I really liked that there wasn’t any significant power imbalance here. The hero was a mafia troubled hero and the heroine was a nightclub owner and she definitely was not a pushover.

The book has a solid plot with a nice balance between the romance and the mafia things. I liked the pacing of the story and the development of their relationship. I still can’t decide whether to round up or down because as much as I enjoyed most of it, the mafia talk was kinda too much? There was like one or two action scenes but the rest was just a mafia strategic talk which kinda bored me, but maybe it’s just me.

It is so easy to look from the outside and think you know everything about a person, a life, and who they are. Time and time again, Susan Fanetti takes that concept and turns it on its head. She does this with a commitment to fleshing out each character and their backstory so you are able to understand the true essence of them. And when you are knee-deep in a Mafia Saga like this series, it is so necessary to have these elements.

Accidental Evils (Pagano Brothers, #3) continues our journey with this family. If you have been reading from the start, then you are very aware of the mental torture Tony carries with him every day. This is a man who found his way years ago when observing Nick Pagano. Tony's childhood was a mixture of family love and pain.
The love a father sometimes shows a young boy doing things together shoulder to shoulder...A mother gives her family the taste of true caring through the meals on the table and hugs at night. He had sisters to tease and also share the good times, too.

But there was also the dark side...

A father whos hands would lash out and inflict pain on his mother and him. Tony endured until he became big enough and strong enough to turn the tables. And while he was getting to the point where He would make the difference during those times...He realized a very serious thing about life and people; you were either chum or shark.

Watching Nick Pagano while growing up, Tony saw the respect he held by all. He was a man who held the power in the town and was the ultimate shark model. Tony was never going to be chum and at sixteen, he took his first job with the Paganos. He aspired to climb to the top and decided he was going to get there.

And now he was a solid member of the family. He was a feared enforcer. He also was tortured by an accidental shooting from the past and try as he might, he has not been able to work through it. One of the ways he has focused on making sure it never happens again is by creating a special shooting scenario area in the gym/shooting range he invested with two other partners. This business venture was designed to encourage everyday guys to work out, practice their shooting and if they were wanting to experience all the real-life complexities of a shoot out, they could enter an area where dummies would pop out either being the bad guys or innocent victims.

This business, though, was not the only "real" job Tony had, he also worked as the logistical guy for the main Pagano Company. All of the Pagano men worked there as their "main" jobs and it was accepted by the town.

Billy Jones had her own unique childhood and upbringing. Although her mother came from the Mayflower line with status and money beyond imagination, her mother made the mistake of loving a man who fashioned himself as a Rocker/Musicman. This relationship and then baby cause her mother to become the "Black Sheep of the family kept in her place."

The mother being "Kept in Place" meant just enough support and attention to string her along but never enough to have her be able to stand on her own two feet. Never to encourage the mother to try and be successful at whatever she tried and support it. Instead, the family would swoop in and tell her to roll over, let them clean up the mess as long as they stayed in charge.

Not a pattern to teach independence...and showed Billy parts of the Golden Life of the Haves during the summers at Quiet Cove. There was a grandfather who looked to Billy as part of the family and when he passed, Billy was shocked he left her something in the will.

Billy's other side of her childhood had to do with her father. At some point, she was raised by him and was on the road with him chasing his musical dream. He was not immune to the lure of drugs and alcohol so these substances were introduced to Billy at an early age. Singing with her dad, getting high with the musicians...this was a stage that Billy finally was able to leave. And when she did...she told her father not to reach out unless he was clean.

That was long ago and now with being clean, having worked at many bars, clubs, and restaurants, Billy took that inheritance and created her version of the type of club she wanted. She blew the whole amount she received in redoing a location to her specs and it was perfect. Unfortunately, she didn't leave enough to make the loft upstairs more finished or have a cushion for hard times. The club is doing ok but with the "protection" payment to the Paganos, she is barely making it.

Tony just had a meeting with an informant informing him drugs were happening out of Billy's club. He goes to the club and acquires the necessary evidence it is actually happening, he approaches Billy.

When Tony and Billy stand toe to toe, Billy knows Tony is a threat to everything she has worked for but still does not back down. She tells him she will confront the issue and make sure it is gone herself. This strength, this ability to stand and not cower surprises and draws Tony to Billy. In their exchange over this, Tony crosses a line of intimidation and when it is all said and done, he is shocked and stunned that he feels wrong about it.

These two are people who have troubled pasts but have found their niche. They are living their lives to their standards. Billy is not mafia and Tony is not a musician or club owner but somehow both are right for each other. They develop trust and understanding of what each one needs...and how only they can give it to each other.

Now, this is a Fanetti book with all of the intricacies she applies when doling out her tales. The enforcer is brutal yet has his own pain which needs tending. The club owner has confidence which she wears as her armor yet also is open to being hurt by the possibility of love. Tony and Billy turn out to be just the right fit and they will live by their own rules, no one else's.

This entry has all of the layers which are important to the family saga and we are left with wanting to know what will happen next.

The Pagano Brothers series is slaying it. Each book is so good. The newest edition, Accidental Evils, is so engrossing.

”Old sins have long shadows.”

Tony is the enforcer for the Pagano Brothers and he is knee-deep in violence. The lifestyle of violence was introduced to him young by his crappy father who took his frustration out on him. Tony learned to channel that violence and when he was old enough he began working for the don. In Tony’s line of work, there has only been one killing that haunts him. It's something he grapples with daily.

Billy comes from wealth and privilege. Her family is the elite of the elite. When her grandfather passed away he left his children and grandchildren an inheritance. That money allowed Billy to go to Quiet Cove which is where she remembers being the happiest place from her childhood. She opens a nightclub under the watchful eye of the town’s local stronghold: the Pagano Brothers.

Billy was also unfortunate in the dad department. Her dad is crappy but not in a violent way. He introduced drugs and alcohol to her when she was a teenager. He later abandoned her to pursue his own dreams. Luckily, like Tony, she was able to better herself and not spiral out of control. West Egg, the nightclub she opened, is her focus and determination to be a person of worth. She determined not to rely on her family's money to create something she could be proud of.

Neither one of them is looking or wanting a relationship when they meet. Tony doesn’t have time or space in his life for a relationship and the same could be said about Billy. Fortunately, both of them are furiously independent and neither is a pushover. Sparks fly when neither one of them is willing to step down from a confrontation over something happening at West Egg. The chemistry heats up between them.

ACCIDENTAL EVILS is the third book in the Pagano Brothers mafia series. This series is a spinoff series from the Pagano Family series which is filled with different siblings in a big Italian-American family. In the end, it doesn’t matter if you’re reading about the family that goes to church and sits on the left side of the pews or the right side of the pews (one being on the straight and narrow, and the other involved in organized crime), it all comes down to FAMILY! The men in this series have their own personal burdens that allow them to grow into the men readers fall in love with. Lovers of mafia romance will want to check out this series!

⭐️⭐️ 4.5 "i want everything with you" Stars ⭐️⭐️

“I want everything with you, Billy. Everything.”

First off I just want to ask: why have Susan Fanetti and her Pagano Brothers series NOT been on my radar?!?! I feel like I should've been aware of this series before now?! Accidental Evils felt like such an honest depiction of what being in the Cosa Nostra would probably be like. Tony, Billy, and the rest of the characters felt so honest and human. This was definitely a more grounded depiction of the Mafia (at least as grounded as a mafia romance can be) and I really appreciated that. Now I'm honestly just kicking myself for starting at book 3 because I really want to go back and start from book 1.

But then again The Name of Honor is Angie's book soooooooo. . . .I might have to take a raincheck on reading books 1 and 2, and instead just jump ahead to the next two books ;)

★ ★ ★ A brief attempt at a synopsis if you will! ★ ★ ★

Accidental Evils tells the story of Tony Cioccolanti and Billy Jones. Tony works as an enforcer and hired gun for Don Nick Pagano. He's a self-proclaimed shark and puts off this very intimidating front to the rest of the world. Billy meets Tony when she's forced to pay protection money to the Pagano family (she owns her own nightclub). When they first meet they have this pretty electric chemistry but Billy is hesitant. Will their romance work or will Tony's role in the Pagano family end their romance before it begins?

☀ ☀ ☀ The Characters ☀ ☀ ☀

↦ ↦ ↦ Tony: Our Killer Whale masquerading as a Shark!

He liked people who fought back. Really fought. Not just flailed and blustered, but came hard. He’d taken her to the brink, and she’d shown herself to be a warrior.

Tony was a really interesting conundrum. The face he shows to the world is a hard one. He doesn't do polite chit chat, he's intense, dangerous, not afraid to get violent, and has killed many people. He's one of the Pagano Families toughest enforcers and he truly loves his job. But at the same time he's also so achingly human. Tony has this vulnerability to him that just makes you want to hug him (not that he'd let you but still ;). He's had a rough childhood and because of that he's vowed that he will always be a shark not the prey.

Tony had her father shoved face-first against the wall, and he was holding his gun at the back of his head.

At the same time though this man carries a pretty guilty conscience for something he did a year prior to this book. The things he does within the Pagano family affect him and he nots some unfeeling machine who isn't effected by the violence of his job. I'd go so far as to say he has a bit of PTSD from this incident and Susan Fanetti does a great job demonstrating this.

“I vecchi peccati hanno le ombre lunghe,” he recited. His voice was little more than a dry whisper. “It’s an Italian saying.” “That means?” “Old sins have long shadows.”

Tony felt so human. He had insecurities, he was striving for acceptance, and he made mistakes. However, beneath the tough exterior was an admirable man who was fiercely protective of those he loved, and a good person.

Tony had value. He didn’t think he’d felt that before, ever in his life, but he felt it now. He was worthy—of respect, of love. Of forgiveness.

↦ ↦ ↦ Billy: AKA who I want to be when I grow up ;)

“Both of you, shut the fuck up. Neither of you have a single word I want to hear about how I live my own damn life. Assholes.”

Let me just give a slow clap for that beautiful quote above:

Billy was freaking awesome and I loved her as a character. Here was a woman making the difficult decision to strike out independently from her wealthy family and start her own business. She's confident in herself, knows what she deserves, flawed, compassionate, and extremely loyal. As Tony says: Billy was a crazy quilt of a chick. And he was fascinated.

However, what I enjoyed the most about Billy was, and let's say it together, the way she REACTED 👏REALISTICALLY👏 TO👏 THE👏 SITUATION👏 AT 👏HAND👏! She wasn't stupid and actually weighed the pros and cons of what it would mean to date Tony. She had to decide whether he was a "bad boy" or a bad man.

He was a professional hitman. The man hurt and killed people for a living. Nick Pagano’s hired gun. This was not okay. Maybe she really did need to find a therapist, because apparently she had some issues to work on.

This dilemma was something that I think a real woman might have if they were going to actually date someone like Tony. So, the first bit of the book focuses on Billy trying to determine whether or not she should actually get involved with Tony.

Everything about him was wrong—he wasn’t merely a bad boy; he was a bad guy. A criminal, whose job it was to threaten and harm. And yet, that thought, that knowledge, had lost its fit in her mind.

Billy was a pretty great female lead who was strong, yet vulnerable, capable but also leaned on Tony, ambitious, caring, confident, and fierce.

♡ ♡ ♡ What I loved about the book!! ♡ ♡ ♡

→ → → ✨The Romance✨ *Cue me contemplating whether or not I should find me a Tony*

He had a nice smile. When it reached his eyes, he was really good looking. Jesus. Fucking. Fuck.

My favorite thing about the romance between Billy and Tony was the way they COMMUNICATED. These two really worked at their relationship. They had the chemistry and attraction down pat, but they really had to work to make their relationship into something more.

“And you have to tell me what’s going on in your life. What you do is dark and scary, and I can’t deal with that unless I have some light to see with.”

However, when love did develop between the two of them it was portrayed in one of my favorite ways. These two made each other better. They came together as equals and became each others safe place.

Every way I turn is bloody and hot, there’s so much nasty shit in my head sometimes I feel like I’m drowning in it, but with you, I feel calm.

While they may have both had pretty explosive personalities they talked things out and really communicated to figure out what they both wanted from their relationship.

“I’m saying … I want it to be official. I want my address to be your address. I want to mix my life up with your life. It’ll be a huge mess, but I don’t care. Because I love you.”

→ → → Billy and her Dad: Rewriting past wrongs.

. . .abuse came in different guises.

Another standout thing from this book would have to be the relationship between Billy and her father. I was not expecting to get as invested in this plot point as I did. Billy's dad was a bit of a deadbeat musician who was a pretty shitty father to Billy. He loved her but he wasn't a good influence on her life. I was so invested in watching him and Billy try and mend their relationship. I felt Billy's pain and how conflicted she felt when it came to her father. And I also saw where Cain was coming from as well. Other than the romance I'd say this was my favorite part of the book.

You’re the most beautiful music I ever made.

:/ :/ :/ What kinda sorta didn't work for me. :/ :/ :/

˃ ˃ ˃ The mob stuff? *cue me nodding off a bit*

I vecchi peccati hanno le ombre lunghe. Old sins have long shadows. In French, it was Le vieux péchés ont des longues ombres.

So as much as I appreciated the mafia setting and the realistic (again for romance fiction) portrayal of the mafia I was bit bored with it? Or more like I was interested but wanted to get back to Tony and Billy's romance. I was interested and I cared, but ultimately I cared more about Tony & Billy and wanted to spend more time with them.

I think it also had a lot to do with me realizing the main plot wasn't going to get resolved in this book. . .When I found that out my brain promptly checked out.

♡ ✧ ♡ ✧ So, to wrap it up. . . ♡ ✧ ♡ ✧

This was a great introduction to the Pagano Brothers world (i know it's not the first book but it was an introduction for me). This book had an explosive couple, a solid plot, and a great cast of characters. Billy and Tony's romance was intense, real, and engaging to read about. If you're looking for a mafia romance to read then I highly recommend checking out this book!

5+ "Day by day." Stars

Another Susan Fanetti, Pagano Brothers series release. Another Susan Fanetti story that absolutely slayed me. I have read this book a few times and each time my eyes are wide open, my heart is pounding, and I'm bracing the edge of my seat. From start to finish Accidental Evils feels dangerous and edgy. The intensity of the passion is sexy.

Tony Cioccolanti feels brilliantly menacing in the best way as he grapples with his own demons and discovers new caveats to himself. Bily Jones provides the perfect match with her ambition, forthrightness, independence, and understanding. What I absolutely loved about these two is that they seem a little bit unmatched but really (and as usual), Susan Fanetti digs so deep into her characters so flawlessly it turns out they're are, without a doubt, the best match.

Also, with the Pagano Brothers in such a precarious state the entire feel of the novel dances with danger. It's gripping what's going on in Quiet Cove and the flow of the brilliant story telling leaves no room for fanciful fluff.

I loved every word. This book perfectly showcases what this series, The Pagano Brothers, and Fanetti couples are made of in remarkable ways. Fanetti's writing once again proves to be limitless, direct, honest, and hopeful in her own signature way of story telling. A brilliant addition to a thrilling series. I can't wait to find out what's next.

I have a soft spot for dark and flawed heroes and that’s exactly what Tony is. He’s an enforcer for the Pagano Brothers. He tortures and kills for his “second family “ and accidentally kills a seven year old boy in a crossfire. That has left a profoundly mark on him and his conscience. As dark as Tony is there’s also good in him. Billy the night club owner sees that but she has to show Tony she doesn’t take his bullying or crap. Their chemistry jumps off the pages.
Billy is pretty kickass and strong. Her family is wealthy and she’s rebelled against them cause she want to do her own thing.
Tony finds calmness in Billy and so does she in him. Their relationship is not easy when one is part of the famous, and powerful mafia of Quiet Cove.
I really enjoyed Accidental Evils. This is dark and gritty mafia romance with interesting and compelling characters. The other characters from the previous books appear such as Don Nick Pagano, his underboss Donnie “The Face” and Trey Pagano. Based on the epilogue there’s still so much story to be told and I can’t wait. I’m ready for Angie Corti!

The only reason I finished the book was for the mafia plotline, I needed to see what was happening with the Ukrainians as I continued the story and boy did a lot happen. Nick was badly injured and almost died. Angie was shot and lots of others died after the Ukrainians attacked Nick's party at dinner. Now the war is headed straight to Yuri Bonduruk.

Romance wise

I did not like Tony!!! At all, he was creepy and pushy and borderline abusive. He had a temper and violent outbursts. He was physically abused as a child by his father who had the same violent outbursts that Tony did, his dad continued to be violent to this day. The first scene where he was pushing up on her and she stabbed him set the tone for Tony's nasty ass. Then we get him later on coming at her rough and she thought he was going to rape her. It's also mentioned of a scene with a previous ex who got physical with him and he flung her across the room. There were many little red flags around Tony basically . Tony is every mafia cliche you can think off, he didn't like Trey for years from simple jealousy imo and I like Trey so Tony no Bueno

Billy came from a very wealthy family and used the inheritance she got from her deceased grandfather to buy a club in Quiet Cove. She meets Tony as she has to pay protection to the Paganos. Billy herself struggles with daddy issues, her father was the one to introduce her to drugs as a teen and she'd tried them all for years until finally she was able to get out and start Living her own life

Two broken ppl must work together in Pagano business but as things in his life get heated Tony finds peace only with Billy.

I got tired writing this review, bottom line I didn't like any of the mcs, this was wordy as fuck especially in the beginning. Billy and Tony had a toxic relationship that relied a little too much on sex. I wouldn't be surprised if they're physically abusive to each other in the years to come 🤷🏿‍♀️

No cheating
H was a manwhore
Billy was bi? Her ex was still a close friend she didn't cause drama to the relationship
Toxic and abusive family members
Mafia violence
Reference to the previous death of a child

4.5 stars. I have to admit that I didn’t think about this book too much going into it. Now, I always expect wonderful books from this author but I was already looking past this book to Angie’s book (which I still can’t wait for) and I didn’t know much about Tony. But, as usual, Ms Fanetti just pulled me all in to the story and had me loving Tony just like I do all the Pagano men. Billy was great and I liked her story and history. Overall a solid addition to the series and I can’t wait for more.

So many emotions but one thing is for sure Susan Fanetti outdid herself. I wish I could give this 10 stars, well 9 stars. Why take that one measly star off for a book that I clearly loved? Because S.F. committed what I think is the the second worst thing an author could do to a hard core fan. She left the story with a cliffhanger!

description

No word on the rest of the story, will Tony come back and what about Billy?

I am fangirling, but this is the best book of hers that I've read to date. Of course this is a love story set in the mafia world, but there is a wonderful understory of Billy's father trying to mend their relationship. It is sad and poignant, and I loved it.

I just need to know that Tony is going to be OK, like now!

GAH - this book had so much mafia - probably the most of this series so far and I loved it!!! and wow it ends on quite the cliffhanger in relation to the Pagano world - it was quite intense all the things that played out through the book!! I just love all the characters so much!!!

The romance of Tony and Billy was complimentary to the storyline. Of all the books in both series' - this wasn't the relationship that evoked the most emotions for me(so 4 stars). But it was the most entwined with the storyline - so I enjoyed that so much!!!! Like I said each one of these books is unique in its romance flavor - which I think is such a talent for an author and especially enjoyed when you are binging the series like I am!!!!!

5 kinda reluctant stars...

Don’t get me wrong, I really liked this book. Tony and Billy had amazing chemistry and I really enjoyed them as a couple.

But there’s something about Fanetti’s writing that feels... too real for me. It was all very close to home in a way that I couldn’t suspend my disbelief like you usually do in the most alpha bizarre mine, mine, mine kinda romance scenarios.

I felt Billy’s discomfort in being pushed into a world with so much danger. The stakes felt real and it made me feel almost wrong for enjoying the violence. Usually I’m like yeah cool kill ‘em all, push the boundaries bla bla bla. But something about this book made me feel creepy for liking that in other books.

This is obviously a personal issue so mostly ignore me. But yeah, I liked it, but felt like I shouldn’t.

Skipped over book one and two to land on the third book. There was no need to read the others from my reading of this one perhaps a deeper understanding of Trey and Donnie but otherwise Tony does a great job from his POV in describing the strengths and weaknesses of the Pegano brothers at his back. He even changes his own opinion of Trey.

I really want to read beyond the epilogue which means it's a cliffhanger of sorts. However I'm happy enough with the strange romance that was this book. I say strange because even the MCs knew well enough initially to take it day by day. I just loved how we watch their relationship unfold and evolve into something strong and based on trust and understanding.

I loved how Billy was sure of what she didn't want enough to chase what she did. Her family trying to hold her back, even right down to resolving a tiff between her ex, a friend who tried to meddle in her life. She was a wonderful mature character that we don't read enough of. I liked how she was able to stand up to the enforcer to impress him enough he wanted to know her more.

I look forward to the next installment of this series. The mafia storyline was packed with action, intelligent planning and of course the proverbial retaliation. It was brutal and wonderful!🙃

Complex

As always deep complex characters that come together and change their outlook and life. No shallow H here and a very strong h to smooth him out!

Absolutely loved the third book in this series. Each book has been so good, as per usual Susan Fanetti tells such a good story, I just love her characters, can’t wait for the next book, I’m hoping it’s Angie’s.

A beautifully profound mafia romance that articulates the meaning of consent

This is book #3 in the Pagano Brothers series and it is Tony and Billy’s story. If you are familiar with the work of Susan Fanetti you will be relieved to learn that nobody important (meaning nobody who has been a main protagonist in a previous book of the series) gets whacked, which is quite a relief, as Fanetti notoriously only guarantees HFN (Happy For Now) endings.

As with most mafia romances violence is an integral part of the story. Usually violence in Fanetti’s writing is distinguished by its visceral quality, which I felt was less the case in this book. At times the violence committed by the (anti-)hero seemed almost game-like, in part because of the type of training he did in order to excel at his job as an enforcer for the Pagano crime family.

Tony, our hero, has had quite a traumatic childhood where he was physically abused by his father over a long time. Out of those feelings of helplessness he then early on aspired to become a member of Nick Pagano’s outfit, so that he could never be made to feel like a victim again, but he is still carrying the scars of his past, both physical and psychological. His precarious state of mind is compounded by the fact that on a recent job a child was killed in the crossfire through his mistake. Nevertheless he has been steadily rising in the ranks and has been given additional responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is collecting protection money from the newly opened club in town and making sure things run smoothly there. Naturally his frequent visits to the club are purely professional and have nothing to do with his fascination with the club’s new owner, Billy.

Billy grew up on the fringes of a very rich family. Her mother is a socialite butterfly who has never learnt to fend for herself and thus is always dependent on the goodwill of her family, only the money never comes without strings attached. That’s not the life that Billy envisions for herself, so after getting a useless degree in French lit and working as a bar manager, she decides to buy a club of her own, which is made possible when she rather unexpectedly receives an inheritance after her grandfather’s death. She is not overly daunted by the fact that the club lies smack in the middle of Pagano territory. But she is increasingly disturbed by Tony’s frequent appearances in her club, and not only because he spells trouble, but because she feels inexplicably drawn to him.

Many (or even most) mafia romances I have read to date play on the trope of dubious consent, forced consent or even non-consent; what makes this story so special and stand out is that Fanetti goes exactly the opposite route. Of course Tony tries to intimidate Billy in the beginning, but when he crowds her bodily, she sticks a letter opener in him. How they negotiate their (intimate) relationship after that initial incident really should be required reading for anybody that doesn’t understand how consent works. Because they do have rough, wild and passionate sex that leaves bruises, but only when Billy is also on board with the idea. And strangely (or maybe not so strangely, considering his history) it’s not only Billy who doesn’t want their romantic relationship defined by violence. In a sense Tony maybe needs the tranquility of a safe heaven from his works that his relationship with Billy provides even more.

Just as they are negotiating their feelings and the parameters of their relationship, real life intrudes as violence erupts in Quiet Cove as a result of the turf war the Pagano Family has been embroiled in with the Ukrainian Bratva. Although the immediate fallout has been resolved and Billy and Tony are in a good place at the end of the book, the war is far from over and there seem to be some rather dark clouds on the horizon for the Paganos. I hate being a Cassandra but I feel some trepidation at the very open ending and I sincerely hope Fanetti is not going to “pull a Havoc” on Tony in the next installment, which is going to be Angie’s story…

Fanetti never disappoints, so no need to stress how much I loved this book. 5 shining stars.

『🔥 5 stars 🔥 』

At the beginning, 𝕋𝕆ℕ𝕐 gives us his enforcer persona. 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞? I wondered. (I didn’t know if I should hate him or love him. Maybe, we just had to accept him the way he is.) Because his actions were pretty sinister and threatening. But then, we get a glimpse of another Tony. One who is tormented by a horrible accident that ended the life of a kid. One who lives with resentment against his abusive father and the scars he carries, figuratively and literally, because of him.

Life was made up of two kinds of people: sharks and chum. Either one was a choice. He’d been the latter, until he had figured that out. Now he was a shark.

𝔹𝕀𝕃𝕃𝕐, Billy,…Wilhelmina! I liked that girl, her personality. That’s an empowered woman. (ɪ ᴡᴀɴᴛᴇᴅ ᴛᴏ ᴘʟᴀʏ ᴍᴏᴛʜᴇʀ’s ᴅᴀᴜɢʜᴛᴇʀ ʙʏ ᴍɪʟᴇʏ ᴄʏʀᴜs) Nevertheless, she has her cracks. She has just started her business, a nightclub: “West Egg”. But things aren’t running like she wanted, her books are in red and the Paganos’ fee isn’t cheap. There is where Tony enters. She doesn’t like him. And after he puts an act-he kind of harassed her-she definitely hates him. Although, she stabbing him wasn’t the best act of defense. He’s mafia for pete’s sake! Do you have a death wish? However, Tony doesn’t react like she expected.
What are we doing, Tony?”
“What are you looking for me to say? I want you. I know you want me. That’s why I’m here, that’s why you let me in, that’s what we’re doing.”
This incident is the turning point. It’s in that moment Billy gets to see through a crack in Tony’s armor. And then their love story begins. Yeah, love. 𝐻𝑜𝓌 𝒸𝒶𝓃 𝓎𝑜𝓊 𝒷𝑒 𝒶𝓉𝓉𝓇𝒶𝒸𝓉𝑒𝒹 𝓉𝑜 𝒶 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁𝑒𝓇?
He had a story. There was a reason. He knew what it was to be powerless, and the fight to find power had made him as he was.
The similarities between them were unexpected. Both suffered because of their families, especially their fathers. They played a big role in their current selves. And even after all that, they can’t turn their back on them completely. This is going to be a sore point in their relationship but they get to an agreement towards the end of the book. These two were made for each other.
It didn’t matter that he was a killer, that his life was violent, that he would make her life violent. Because he was also this man. He was full of contradictions, of light and shadows, and she was falling for it all.
Their journey is long and turbulent. Both are fighting their demons but at the same time they find in the other a safe place. I just loved their conversations, even before they realized their feelings they were surprised how easy was to talk to the other about things they never shared with anyone before. And after they say the “L” word, their conversations got better. I would have thought it would be difficult for them, especially for Tony to accept love and give it but surprisingly they accepted their feelings and didn’t run from them. They made a conscious decision to pursue a relationship and a future together.
Tony had value. He didn’t think he’d felt that before, ever in his life, but he felt it now. He was worthy-of respect, of love. Of forgiveness.
On a side note, the events around the war with the Ukrainians reached its peak. An unforgivable attack to the Paganos almost destroy them. But they were reborn from their ashes and are after the Ukrainians’ blood now. A plan is made to take them down once and for all.

I don’t know how Susan F. does it, but this was a knockout. Really, how these stories come to her, these complex characters but so real at the same time, these intricate situations that just make sense, these “bizarre” relationships that work at the end? I fucking loved every word. That’s the thing; there is no word in this book that wasn’t necessary or complementary to the story. (Sometimes I feel writers just want to fill the pages, just because.) The story is built so well-in an intelligent way-that everything flows smoothly and you just can’t stop reading. Another thing I appreciated was how realistic the mafia world was portrayed. From the hierarchy to their way of life, their links to religion, the importance of family and 𝖇𝖑𝖔𝖔𝖉, the brutality, the retaliation...Even the action scenes were great. Oh! And the intrigue, especially in the epilogue. I can’t wait for next book and see what happens.

Godfather worthy

I’m sure it won’t come as a surprise that The Godfather is one of my all time favorite movies. Cinematic excellence at it’s best. This series is literary excellence, in my humble opinion. I have never read the first part of this series. I bought it and have been meaning to - it’s on my TBR list. I have read all of the books in this series, all leading to Tony’s book. Highly recommend you read the first two books before this one.

Love Tony and Billy’s story. Scary and dark at times but the relationship that they built throughout the book is commendable. The chemistry is sizzling hot. Love Susan’s female protagonists and Billy is no different. She’s strong, funny, resilient, passionate. Not afraid to discover who she is and own it. Takes a special confident kind of man to handle these women. Admirable the way Susan built Tony to be strong, tough and scary but willing to give a part of himself to Billy. They both have terrible fathers and are able to relate subsequently finding a way to let each other in.

The war with the bratva has elevated and brought the Cove to a literal standstill. I typically hate cliffs but Susan has pulled it off. Can not wait for the second half of this book!

Well done Susan. I highly recommend this series you will not be disappointed.

My fave of the series so far. Both these characters hit the mark as did the heavy mafia content.

I wasn’t sure about Tony when I read Treys book but now I get him. Yep he’s a bully and I have no doubt not a nice one. But I see where he’s coming from. He’s working his way up and someone is stepping over him. Although I’m not sure it’s Treys fault but I do think Trey could have said something or requested to work his way up.

Tony is your quintessential mafioso. And a blue collar guy. He has rage issues but you can’t tell he’s soft underneath. We saw that in Joeys book when Tina got hurt. And Billy is the perfect match for him. Independent and fiery but soft and understanding. She gets him and he needs a soft place to fall with his line of work.

I honestly thought the dad was going to be a problem for Billy but he wasn’t. But the shoot out at Dominico’s was a surprise and I held my breath to see if a Nick survived- he has to. He needs to change the half-blood rules first.

I can see Tony becoming the head enforcer. Taking over from Angie. He deserves it too. A

Tony the Enforcer

Tony is a made man, an enforcer for the Pagano brothers who has a major regret and a cop on his shoulder about “Golden Boy” Trey Pagano. Tony is also a collector for Pagano Insurance payments from the local businesses.

Billy has never seemed to fit in with her ultra-rich family, since she and her mother are the black sheep of the Bradford family. She has only ever felt at home in Quiet Cove and that is where she decides to open her elegant, Gatsby-esque night club, The West Egg.

The mafia war with the Ukrainian Bondaruk’s is heating up to apocalyptic portions. The next book in the series should be extremely interesting on this front. I’m thinking it’s probably going to be Angi’s book.
