Winner of the first ever James Patterson Master Class short-story writing contest, Steven Sheiner is an optometrist turned writer, proving that it's never too late to pursue your dreams! He began his college career as an accounting major, and then proceeded to change his major three times. He had no idea what we wanted to do professionally, but always loved writing. But twenty years later, he still regretted not pursuing a writing career, and decided it was about time. At forty-five years old, after having been an optometrist for twenty years, he decided to write his first book. Steven Sheiner lives in South Florida with his wife and two boys.

I love that this title is a Kindle Unlimited Read right now. This book was terrific and grabbing and keeping my attention! This well respected optometrist, Dr. Simon Spero winds up shooting a man in a bank robbery and his whole world is changed in ways I could never predict. Now people are after him and everything that is important to him is at risk: his wife, kids, job, and reputation not to mention his own life are all on the line!!

There are so many things I love about this book. First of all, author Steven Sheiner is not stingy with the plot twists.... Obviously that helps hold my attention. Once you have things figured out, you are left with surprises and new suspects. I also love that Simon and his wife are so normal and easy to relate to. I would love to rave about the literary themes in this book, but to do so unnecessarily spoils the plot.

The good guys, bad guys, good girls, and bad girls are all interwoven in a tight suspense novel with such skill that these characters come to life as I read each page. The problem is trying to figure out who is good and who isn't such a trustworthy soul! I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book and I think it would make an entertaining, not to mention successful movie. I am definitely following Steven Sheiner and reading more of his work!!

I received an advance review copy for free to read and review. As always, my opinions are my own.

"I'D NEVER DRAWN MY GUN IN PUBLIC BEFORE. EVERYTHING AROUND IT FELT wrong, scary even, but it had to be done."

A brilliant thrilling gem from Steven Sheiner, an award-winning author. The story depicts Dr. Simon Spero, an optometrist who also a family-oriented man who lives an ordinary life with his family. However, his life turns 360 degrees after he gets involved in an incident that brings him into a path of the spine-chilling 'area'. To protect his loved ones, he will do anything. Will, he manages to escape from it and protect his family? Or this will be the end for him?

When I look at the synopsis for the first time, it captures my attention to explore the story. At first, the story's progress seems slow and mundane. But like a song with a long introduction, begins with bass followed by guitar and then keyboard, and lastly the song. the story begins to buildup and steadily progress from chapter to chapter, and it always makes me wonder what will happen next to the characters. Besides the story, the characters in this story also progressed well along with the story. Sometimes, too many characters appear in a few chapters, and somehow it confusing to me. But I still can follow the plot and can imagine it in my mind.

I can say this story is interesting and can be seen from a psychological perspective especially Dr. Simon Spero which is the main character. How an incident triggered and encouraged him to do something that he never does before to survive. Even if he had to do something against the law. In psychology studies, how an incident or something can affect a person's behavior which can turn him/her into a totally different person. From him, I realize that sometimes we need to learn something new whether it is new life skills or a new language for life improvement or to survive especially during emergencies.

In conclusion, this story reminds me of David Chernushenko's Burning Souls which is gives me a mixture of suspense, thrilling and spine-chilling when I read it. The author did a good job on this book and it worth my 5-star. For everyone who loves contemporary fiction with thriller elements, this book SHOULD be on your list. Read it and get ready to feel the excitement!

Thrills and Chills!

Wow! Talk about an exciting book! When they say it's classified a thriller they weren't joking! The reader is pulled into the story dynamic rather quickly and the twists and turns keep you on the edge of your seat. I was hooked!

Shot Down sees an average normal man named Simon, after the unthinkable happens it's like a switch turns. You have to keep turning the pages to see what happens. I fully recommend this book!

What an amazing roller coaster ride it was. The intrigue, the plot twists, the suspense will keep you at the edge of your seat. I bet you won't be able to predict anything.
Lets begin with the cover of the book. It is attractive and intriguing at the same time. It pulls you in . So does the title. It lays the basis for the thriller.
The chapters on the whole are not to long and that makes it an easy read.
Dr. Simon Spero, the optometrist is an engaging character. He is a family man and when a gunman shoots indiscriminately at a cinema hall he had bought a gun and learnt how to use it. Soon he finds himself in the midst of another mass shooting at a bank involving Cuban Mafia and he's pulled into it and how! Hereafter the plot thickens and takes many twists and unexpected turns.
The writing style is amazing. The conversations are smooth and the descriptions are detailed. Steven Sheiner ties the plot so well even after many twists and turns
I would definitely recommend this book to all those who love reading thrillers.

Shot Down by Steven Sheiner is an exciting thrill ride that is hard to put down. I started reading the book believing it to be a thriller then after few pages was like maybe it's a family drama about guns and the necessity of gun laws then suddenly bam! What a rollercoaster ride it was.
Yes there is a Family Drama too with the Twists, plots and counterplots . Once the ride begins the reader cannot relax until the ride ends. A simple story that starts with a common man's concern about rising violence in society that makes him purchase a gun for self defense takes him on a ride that not only endangers him but his family , his sanity and his career. he is left no option but to fight back and also he has secrets of his own. Scared and destroyed , he has no one to turn to and not even authorities and also people who suppose to be helping him
My only negative point is this still ends on a small cliffhanger ; maybe for sequel. Yayyyy!
A great book for all thrill seekers.
Thanks @BookTasters for this great book

Wow, wow, wow. This is my first book by this author and I hope that it wont be my last, it grabbed my attention from the first page, the suspense and intrigue were indescribable, the short chapters made it easy to read.

Simon, an unassuming optometrist, married with two sons was paying his weekly visit to the bank when in walked a gunman shooting up the place indiscriminately. Unknown to everyone in the bank, the gunman was the brother of the female head of the much despised and feared Cuban mafia, unknown to his family, after a mass shooting in a cinema, Simon, with the help of his friend had bought a gun, learned how to use it and indeed had become very proficient. What happens next ? The story unfolds from here and I don't want to plan any spoilers. Needless to say, the plot gets thicker and thicker and the anxiety levels go off the scale. Simon was set up and someone was pulling his strings but how and who ? At some point I suspected every character in the book and I was astounded when I got to the last few pages. This story has more twists and turns than a corkscrew and covers every emotion possible, it is a real page turner and I can highly recommend it.

Thrilling, yet chilling, read!

Sheiner pens an intense story in Shot Down. This is the first book of Sheiner's that I've read, and I doubt it will be the last. The story pulls the reader in, and keeps the reader engaged, almost as a lure to keep the reader in suspense. First, I liked the premise of the story. It was unique and interesting, and Simon was a mild-mannered guy until his world turned upside down. I enjoyed every word, every raw moment in this magnificent page-turner. A definite edge-of-your-seat read. Sheiner's writing style was what grabbed my attention, especially the areas that were full of action. It is not always easy to write what we want to show, but Scheiner did it with this book. I definitely look forward to reading more by this author.

Sara Spero (wife/mother) informed Dr. Simon Spero (Jewish, husband/father) she was taking their boy’s: Jordan Spero (14) & Brock Spero (12) to an all-boys sports camp in Maine.
Carlos Escalante (Christina’s brother, Cuban Mafia member) assured the 2 brothers he’d get the $100 grand he owed them. 48 hrs. or else.
Wells Fargo branch. A gunman hurled a l duffel bag at the tellers.
He demanded the money from each 1 of them.
Shots were fired, but so far no one had been killed.
I leaned against the edge of the table & steadied myself.

BANG! He looked right at me. BANG!... BANG!
This time the bank robber fell.
The front bank doors flew open & there was the SWAT team.
Dr. Simon Spero (husband/father, optometrist) with hands in the air told them who he was.
William Alter was retained as his attorney.
Detective/ Sheriff Kyle Lawton Palm Beach) & FBI SA Paxton Stamper were assigned to the case.
The FBI put Dr. Simon Spero/family & Mandy (adopted Wheaten Terrier) into witness protection.
Christina Escalante (sister, Miami, FL., Cuban Mafia head) would surely retaliate.
Onna Café. Raul (Cuban Mafia member) & Christina were enjoying a coffee.
2 weeks & the Spero family was headed back home.
Dr. Erica Norris (psychiatrist, U of Miami School of Medicine; MD, psychiatric residency program, American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology certified) started seeing Dr. Simon Spero.
Later, Dr. Simon Spero was arrested & taken into custody.
Barry Poole (West Palm Bail Bonds owner/operator) had posted Dr. Spero’s bond.
Miami, FL. Christina’s funeral was to be held the Gesù Catholic Church.
Father Alejandro Balzan gave the eulogy, the funeral was held, hail Mary’s, followed by the burial & dinner. Everyone gave their condolences to the other Escalante family members.

All rise. The District Court of Miami-Dade County is now in session, Judge Charles Keever is presiding.

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written crime thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great crime thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

Thank you to Booktasters and Steven Sheiner. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

I was looking to read something different from my usual genres, and I found Shot Down. I found this book to be well written, had a good copy editor, and a tight story. The author kept the story on track, and kept it suspenseful without divulging too much too early.

Dr. Simon Spero scrolls through his Facebook account and reads of yet another mass shooting, except this one is just too close to home. James Henderson killed 22 people in a movie theater in Boca Raton. Dr. Spero and his family had seen numerous movies at that theater. Dr. Spero decides to purchase a handgun for protection, and goes to his best friend, Ingo Randall who has plenty of experience with guns and violence, having grown up in Rhodesia.

Ingo conferred with Dr. Spero about gun ownership and the responsibilities that come with owning a gun. Wanting to protect his family at all costs, Dr. Spero proceeds with purchasing the gun, and Ingo trains Dr. Spero extensively.

What starts out innocently enough, owning a gun, training with a gun, shortly pulls Dr. Spero into a life he never foresaw. Dr. Spero goes to his bank to make his weekly deposit, only to get into a shoot-out with the bank robber. Cleared of all charges, the use of deadly force was justified, Dr. Spero wants to return home, but he can’t because the bank robber was part of a Cuban Mafia crime family!

Now Dr. Spero and his family are in real trouble, with the Mafia wanting to avenge their brother’s death, and Dr. Spero must decide to either run with his family or deal with the Mafia. The only problem is, no one really knows for sure who the Mafia head is. Law Enforcement and the attorney know it’s Christina Escalante, but none has ever actually seen Christina.

The suspense continues, with many twists and turns, thwarting Dr. Spero each time. I think the author may have gone overboard with the stereotyping: rich Jewish doctor, computer hacker, dirty law enforcement, Mafia family, sleazy criminal defense attorney. But overall I did enjoy the story, and did not see that ending coming!

I was given a feee copy of this book from book tasters and the author in exchange for an honest review.

The start of the book had me hooked straight away, Simon Spero the optometrist killing someone who was holding a bank to ransom - but in his being the hero he didn’t realise he had shot Carlos Escalante of the crime family. I must admit it had me hooked and I had to keep reminding myself that it wasn’t a real life story, as it was that well written.

Then there’s the twists and turns, how each character is interlinked in different chapters is really, really clever. You might not find out for 3/4 chapters how, but you eventually will do.

Sara (his wife) and the boys end up having to go into protective custody, something which the FBI weren’t going to give them until his lawyer, William (who is a fierce man!) demands it, and they get 10 days.

The more intimate details are refreshing too around his therapy sessions, and how he is feeling every day, every time he does this that or the next thing, you really feel that emotion for him as it is so well written.

Another example of characters over lapping is Callie Ann Hollis, who he spotted while he was going to therapy; they meet up while Sara and the boys are away at camp (where they are being spied on) a couple of times, but break off contact when he rebuffs her advances, despite the fact he really wants to. She then shows back up as a patient of his later in the book.

All in all it is a really well written book, that I think would make a great movie! The grammar, punctuation, visual story telling and the ability to place you IN that situation are testament to Mr Shiener and his writing skills.

It’s nice too, how Vera and Alexis look after his practice in his absence and have to go on a drive to recruit more patients after his full waiting room see him frogmarched out in handcuffs once he returned, and goes back again a couple of weeks later.

The only down side of the book (my opinion) is around 85% of the way through it becomes VERY wordy. I know that might sound a strange thing to say about a book, but it just seemed to be filler to me, and information that wasn’t really pertinent to the book, hence the 4 stars. I still finished the book though and on the whole really enjoyed it.

Everything was going well with Dr Spero. His wife and kids went to two month camp, and he was taking care of his practice as an optometrist and the family dog Mandy. Until he saw in the news a shouting in the Theatre he usually goes to with his family that made him think if he needed to own a gun to use it when needed. He went to his friend Ingo who helped him buy a gun and train on how to use it.

Things went crazy when Dr Spero shot down a bank robber that turned out to be the brother of the head of the Cuban mafia Christina Escalante, Dr Spero's life turned upside down, hunted by reporters, having people protesting against him, getting arrested and spending time in jail, getting beaten hard, and on top of all being hunted by nightmares and fear for his life and his loved ones.

I think the author did well to show what it means to own a gun and what it means to take a life.

Dr Spero's story contains so many sides to the society we're living bad and good, and whenever someone has good intentions, goodness will follow and Karma will follow those who are evil and corrupt no matter how smart.

At the end the question still wandering in my head is it good or bad owning a gun for protection

Sometimes life starts with a big thing. The little things before that are still living, but there are rungs to living. A big thing for some might be meeting a partner, becoming a parent, getting a dream job, a career breakthrough, or the demise of a loved one. For Simon, it is killing a man and this big thing set us up on a gripping tale of thrills, kills, steals, and tragedies. Family, stolen loyalties, kept secrets, honest and dishonest intentions, and a stubborn ache to get back stolen normalcy, all embodied by lovable characters, fell entertainingly in place to make the pages automatically turn.

In a tone and pace just right for its genre, Steven Sheiner wrote beautifully to depict this interesting tale on paper.

Although, this reader feels we could do without some of the plot twists as they give more doubts than reasons to believe in the storytelling. Steven Sheiner did a very good job creating remarkably believable characters which reinforces this book to not only be interesting but also memorable.

This is an entertaining book that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Where do I begin?

This was an excellent read, I just can't seem to wrap my head around it. I found myself sucked in and I just couldn't put it down. From the storyline, characters down to descriptions and details not once was I disappointed. This action packed, crime, suspense, thriller novel kept me on the edge of my seat begging for more.

After hearing about a shooting near his home an optometrist buys a gun (after weeks of gun training) to protect the ones he loves. He finds himself in the middle of a bank robbery, assessing the situation around him he takes out his gun and fires at the perpetrator.

Oh but how he wasn't ready for the twist and turns. The doctors life takes a turn for the worst. No amount of training could have prepared him for it. Definitely had a moment to take in how brilliant the author is. I just couldn't put it down and when I did I'd find myself asking what would happen next. I loved it, I loved it all.

A huge thanks to the author and BookTasters for this opportunity.

Shot Down is a masterclass in suspense and family-driven stakes. Steven Sheiner crafts a story that starts with seemingly ordinary life and quickly plunges the reader into a tense, unpredictable thriller. Dr. Simon Spero is a relatable protagonist whose journey from a regular family man to someone forced to confront violence is both gripping and emotionally authentic.

The pacing is excellent, with each chapter building tension without ever feeling rushed. The plot twists are smartly executed, keeping readers guessing right up to the final page. What sets this book apart is the way it blends high-stakes suspense with deeply human emotions, fear, love, and the lengths one will go to protect family.

I especially appreciated the attention to detail in both the action sequences and the character development. It’s clear that Steven has a talent for writing thrillers that are not only thrilling but also heartfelt and engaging.

If you’re a fan of suspense, crime, and thrillers with strong emotional stakes, Shot Down is a must-read.

I was actually surprised that I really enjoyed this book! I love how the author was able to develop each of the characters' personal struggles and the plot twists were not disappointing. The writing style was also simple which made the characters in the story very relatable. Reminds me of one of James Pattersons' books (James Patterson is also one of my favorite authors). I could see myself in Dr. Spero's own dilemmas - his personal conflicts were realistic and the situations he got himself into can actually happen in real life. Once you start reading, it's very hard to stop. The story overall was actually very well-written. The only thing that took me long was that I couldn't find the time to read anymore since I have extra shifts at work (I'm a medical frontliner 👩‍⚕️). But nonetheless, I recommend this book to anyone who loves thrillers and crime fiction ❤ I can see this book being made into a movie. 😍 Rating this with 5/5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

4.5 Stars!!

Could not turn the pages fast enough. A very clever, serpentine adventure revolving around a man of integrity who happens to stumble into a mess that sets his life on a wild and scary ride.

The cast of characters are varied and could be torn from today's headlines. Drama, suspense and nervous excitement keep the reader guessing . Violence is explosive and written in a way that both excites and repels the reader. Makes us wonder if we could find the necessary mental strength to protect our family when threats invade our universe. Trust is questioned, tested and found transient.

This is a well written story and I hope the author has more floating around his brain that he will share.

I love WWII books and found this book excellent. Steve Snyder has done and amazing job by writing this book and telling his father’s story as it is one that really deserved to be told. This book further validates how hard it was for the B-17 crews. Many were lost flying and this book shows the endurance of one group of men. Survival for these young men were at risk every time they got in the plane. He’s obviously put a lot of effort and hard work into the accuracy of detail in the book, and in my opinion has really pulled it off. It is very well written and so full of details and is just all in all a great read. I would highly recommend this book to all those who have an interest in WWII, or in any aspect of aviation and our exciting and compelling history.

Thanks to Steven and Booktasters for this book.
This went in a lot of different directions than I was expecting. The story centers around Simon, a ordinary guy whose life is turned upside down after witnessing an act of violence. I don't really want to give too much more away, because the twists in this novel are intense and frequent. Usually I'm not a reader who goes for a lot of "twists" when reading novel, but the premise of the novel combined with well-drawn characters and realistic situations won me over. The book is somewhat lengthy, but Mr. Sheiner knows how to keep those pages turning. Its length was justified and never felt indulgent. If you like thrillers and are looking for something unique and engaging, I recommend "Shot Down".

I was provided a free digital copy of Shot Down by the author, Steven Sheiner, in exchange for an honest review. This book is a thriller with suspense, action, and even a bit of humor; and I could not put it down. True, it got off to a bit of a slow start in order to set the scene and establish the characters, but soon I was turning pages as fast as I could.

After learning of a school shooting near his home, Dr. Simon Spero buys a gun for protecting his family, and takes classes where he quickly becomes a great shot. Suffice it to say, being known as a great shot at a gun range is not always a good thing.

When making his weekly deposit from his optometry business, Simon finds himself cowering behind a desk when a man enters the bank firing bullets everywhere. Simon gathers his courage, and shoots the robber, and that is when his life takes a change of direction that will be almost impossible to reverse.

Thriller lovers everywhere absolutely must read Shot Down. You won’t be sorry.

What made The Grumpy Book Reviewer grumpy?

As usual, I sent my notes to the author for his personal use, to do with as he chooses. He made some of my recommended corrections. Here is a little of what I still recommend correcting:
• Mis-use of the word “premonition”;
• Brought (here) vs. take (there);
• but only one split infinitive, which makes me very happy.

Wow is all I can say, shot down has taken me for so many plot twists I can’t even begin to start. First owning a gun & having to use it isn’t fun, and it sure wasn’t for Dr. Simon. Going through a whirlwind of emotions & actions, Dr. Simon ends up shooting someone who let’s just say wasn’t supposed to be shot. From then on his life before he knows it, starts drastically changing, not for the better either. I would recommend this book to anybody that wanted some action, thrills, & plot twists that will have you going back to re read and see if you got it right lol. I got this book to read from BookTasters & it was a great choice

This book didn't hook me until I was a fair few pages in and but once it did, I found myself really intrigued about the plot and where it was going. It did not disappoint! There are so many twists and turns and I didn't see them coming so the finale was a great surprise - both for me and the protagonist! The writing is very good and pace is fair, as in it speeds up when it needs to and doesn't drag. Overall a very enjoyable read 🙂

A married with two boys, mild-mannered, pork-eating, Jewish optometrist walks into a bank.......and all hell, and his life, breaks loose!

A fast-paced, curve-throwing, rollercoaster ride of an adventure! Just when you think you're there. BAM! not..Twists and turns brings this adventure to a close. Maybe.

Maybe not. This could easily become a series.

Loved it! Hoping for more!

It was very different and interesting story. Sure shot a page turned as I prefer. This story makes you examine the consequences of your actions, if you have a Right To Carry License and use it for defense. With all the twists and turns, this story does not make Simon a hero. Although this story is not your typical situation with mob connections, police corruption, FBI corruption and Judges bought off. Even thought fiction, it still sends a message to think before you pull the trigger. Through perseverance it does show you who your friends are in this tragic situation.

I received this book free from Goodreads for a honest opinion.

This book was full of twists and turns! My first book by this author and it grabbed my attention from the very beginning, I found it to be very well written and action packed. When an optometrist decides to take matters into his own hands and protect himself and others his life spirals out of control. I would definitely recommend this to those that enjoy thrillers.
