Academy of the Devil #1

A Hellish Year One

Rate this book
Abandon all hope, ye who enter here. The Academy of the Devil is waiting, and there will be no mercy.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been the girl who didn’t fit in, the girl who collapsed in the middle of class, just because my brain decided to turn on me. I can’t really complain, though. We don’t live in the Middle Ages, so I have yet to be subjected to an exorcism. I can get treatment for my condition. Epilepsy aside, I can mostly be a normal person and have a normal life.

There’s just one problem. I’m not a normal person. I never have been. And the first time I find this out is upon receiving an exclusive invitation to The Academy of the Devil.

Unfortunately, the Academy of the Devil isn’t like other schools and the current princes of the school have a lot of experience in ripping whatever contender they have to shreds. First, there’s Callum, incubus extraordinaire and leader of the house of Lust. He thrives on making students fall in love of him and then breaking their spirits. Then there’s Mikael, the envious cambion, rumored to enjoy feeding students to the school’s dragon. And last, but not least, the leader of the house of Wrath, the hell hound Stefan. I hear he doesn’t bother with the dragon and just takes care of pests himself.

All of them despise humans. All of them sneer at anyone who displays any kind of weakness. All of them hate me and everything I stand for. That’s fine. I don’t need friends, lovers, or even valued mentors. All I need is to survive my school years with my soul, my sanity and my brain intact.

It’ll be a challenge, but I’ve dealt with worse. I might not be ready for the Academy of the Devil, but they’re not ready for me either.

The Academy of the Devil is a paranormal bully reverse harem romance. All characters involved in the pairing are 18+ years old. But be advised! The series will contain dark themes, including violence, ableism, bullying of a character suffering from an invisible disability, and other similar content that may be disturbing for some readers. Approach with caution. Once you enter The Academy of the Devil, you will never be the same.

3.5 stars, rounded up.

Before I begin, I have to make it clear that this book isn't actually very romantic at all. It's extremely slow-burn, the action doesn't really move beyond the lightest of kissing. This contradicts the fact that the school is very sexually open, and the first time we see one of the heroes is when he's fingering another girl in front of the heroine. We also see another hero for the first time while he's having sex with another woman. None of these bothered me because a) the heroine is not jealous at all and b) they haven't even met yet. Once they begin speaking there is NO hint of OW at all, not even for the hero who's an incubus. Basically, if you can get past the opening scene, it's a straight safe ride from there.

The bullying from the heroes is comparatively minimal, in that there is no physical injury and it's restricted to some verbal abuse, which the heroine deals with very well. So I had no complaints on that score. I'm just slightly disappointed that the book is so non-steamy; we'd go a long time without seeing the heroes interact with the heroine, which weakened their connection.

In good news, the spare page time was taken up by a really interesting main plot about the Academy of the Devil. Unlike most 'academy' books, where the school seems to exist purely as a location for the characters to snog in abandoned classrooms and we never see them study/read/learn anything, we actually see the heroine here going to classes and working hard. Loved it!

I won't lie, the heroine annoyed me slightly with all her animal-centric stuff, but that's just a personal peeve. I'm also concerned because at the end of the book it seemed like she might be turning into a bit of a Mary Sue. However, it's very well-written and I look forward to the sequel.

So, here's the thing... it's hard to rate and review this book. Sure, I liked it and this book was an okay start to the series. It's just... I had a love/hate relationship with all the characters. I will eventually jump into the next book because I just want to know more about this school and why Lucifer chose her.

That's it.
I have questions.

I didn’t like the cover but I did like the blurb and I’m glad I read this one. There is bullying but from the guys its in the form of name calling but it is still harsh and it is a tear jerker towards the end. Straight forward school name Academy of the Devil with one rule. Do not show weakness. The bullying this time around is because of disability.

Alyssa despite her condition is strong, takes no nonsense and isn’t one for insta-love. The three guys are a mixed bunch, an incubus, a cambion and a hellhound. My opinion of them was a little up and down and in the end I’ve decided I like them, as well as the misunderstandings.

The one thing that bugged me at the beginning of the book was the array of characters plucked from anime, Greek and Egyptian mythology amongst others. It threw me off a little but I was mainly in it for the familiars. So cute. It is fast and at first everyone comes across as brats, no cliff-hanger but the epilogue makes me need to read the next one.

Holy shit, what an ending that was. I really got sucked into this book even though I was hating on most of the characters throughout. They're all just monster dicks and I mean that rather literally. In fact them being mean is often times a sign they at least find you interesting. Being the only human in a school of other gifted students (heaven forbid I say supernatural beings as I may get struck down) is exactly the position the heroine finds herself in. I'm hella impressed with her fortitude but then again leaving the Academy was not really an option for her so she took it like a champ. So far the guys are all dicks and while the bullying is kind of tame, it's just annoying to watch them behave so immaturely. Alyssa has her work cut out for her in the next two books.

I was surprised the book covered the span of two semesters but it made sense for parts of the story as it gave Alyssa more acquainted with the school. I think the school is a awesome but serves as a scary setting given how it's not unnatural for her peers to get killed by a teacher in class. The death of her familiar took me by surprise and I'm out for blood, someone needs to pay. While I'm glad they revived him, the story kind of moved on from his revival quick and I just want to know for sure if it's all of him back or he's a little zombified or something lol.

As for the romance it's literally nil in this book and the guys are flaming assholes and man-whores. I don't know why it's become such a trope for the OW drama to include the heroine witnessing one of the guys in a disturbing and sexual situation with someone else, the school's Queen B and head bitch for that matter. Sure she finds out later he's an incubus but still, ewww. Read via audio which I really enjoyed and seemed to fly by.

Okay Read

This was an alright read. This is the first book of the Academy of the Devil series. It is a paranormal reverse harem bully romance book. in this book, our heroine, Alyssa has to go to an academy where the next Satan is to be chosen. I thought the story had an intriguing premise, but I thought the book was a bit boring. The first half of the book was slow, but then it started getting good during the second half. Also, I thought the characters could use more development. I would have liked to know more about Alyssa. I thought she was a bit annoying at times. Also, I thought the guys in the story needed more development as well. The ending was interesting. I wonder what will happen to the story and characters in the next 2 books. I might continue the series next month if I have time. I just thought that this one was lacking for me. Overall, an okay read.

I liked the setting, the academy was definitely something xD But there was also bullying that I hated.

I really loved the beginning, everything felt so intriguing and even shocking. At the end this didn't really deliver what I expected but this was still entertaining to read.

unique

This is a slightly different take on a rather familiar RH tale - academy, mortal who has powers, princes, etc… but it’s still done a bit differently. Also, I rather loved the notion of the demons getting offended by being called supernatural or paranormal. The implications behind it were spot on.

Overall: 3/5 It was a decent first book but the other books ruin the series with MM and human/animal sex.
Heat: 0/5 There was one underwhelming scene.
Romance: 0/5 There is no real romance.
Drama: 3/5
Suspense: 2/5
Cliffhanger(?): 1/5
MM: Not in the first book but in the next two, yes.
HEA: it’s the first so no.
World Building: 2/5
Relationship Building: 0/5

So I would have given this book higher stars but I hate when warnings aren’t given. Nowhere in the synopsis of the first book does it let you know some of the freaky stuff in the later books. It is in the beginning of the second book BUT by the time you’ve gotten to the second book you’ve wasted time reading the book in a series you may not finish. I wish authors would give a warning in the first so you don’t waste time and end up left hanging. 🤦🏼‍♀️😡

Anywho I’ll give the warning in my review, this is what the warning for book two says: “The book will contain sexual themes like sex in partially shifted form (basically werewolf sex), knotting, temperature play, penetration through the use of secondary appendages (demonic tail). It will delve into some dubious consent territory. If this bothers you, please turn back. There will also be some other dark themes, such as bullying, mutilation, trauma etc.”
It’s not mentioned but there is MM in book two and three based on reviews I’ve read and I don’t like MM in a RH romance. And I’ll pass on a human having sex with a werewolf in animal form.

I also did not like the killing of Shiro. There should have been a trigger warning for that. As someone who just lost their dog, it was extremely hard for me to handle.

I also thought it weird how when they went into the underground cave area they were fondling and kissing her body yet later in the book she gets her first kiss.
So this virginal never been kissed girl lets these guys she just met, who were mean to her, touch her body and kiss her neck and was wanting to go all the way even doing anal. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

I would have continued and read book two but after finding out about the MM and human/animal sex, I will pass.

holy hell i have so much mixed feelings for this book.

I even cried a bit when everyone was hating on Alyssa after she got her epilepsy attacks and the guys spitting hurtful comments like she smells and that they never wanted to be with her and want her etc. So i got a bit annoyed at the end when i felt like she just took them back or something . Like it´s all fine when they saved her familiar... She just to kind

Great read

This is definitely a book that managed to capture my attention. I'm really curious where this is going next.

I did get a little confused/spaced out at a certain point, but after that the plot picked up quickly. I even blinked away a few tears.

Alyssa is forced to go to the Academy of the Devil, and this academy is made for picking who will become the next Satan. Going into this book, I didn't know what to expect. I was surprised when I realized that Alyssa has epilepsy because I also have epilepsy. I haven't read many books with epilepsy representation, and I would love to read more. I found the plot very intriguing, and I enjoyed the beginning of the story. It was hard to put the book down because I just wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next.

After I got past the beginning part of the story, I felt it all went downhill. The love interests were very unlikeable, and I found Alyssa to be very frustrating in her actions toward the guys. Alyssa kept saying that she didn't want to be in a couple with the guys because she thought it would be hard to be in a relationship with someone who looks down on her species which I agree with, but then the guys take her somewhere, and all it takes is one touch for her to cave, and she wants to sleep with them suddenly, but then they get interrupted, and she says that she doesn't know if she can trust them or not but she was just about to sleep with them. The chapter ends with her saying that if they thought they could win her over so quickly, they had another coming, but if they didn't get interrupted, she would have caved and had sex with them. And she is also supposed to be a virgin who has never been kissed, so I found that scene unbelievable. I also didn't believe the guys when they said they had feelings for her because it was like they went from hating her one day to all of a sudden being like, "Oh, we actually have feelings for you. How could you believe we ever hated you?" the next day, and I thought that was super confusing. I also did not like the killing of Shiro. I felt that there should have been a trigger warning for that.

Overall, I love that this book has epilepsy representation, and I found the plot to be very interesting in the beginning, but because the rest of the book fell flat for me, I will not be continuing with this series.

A fairly simple and fun read with an interesting premise and characters. Very light on the bullying compared to other awful bully-centered romances (I hate that sick crap), and thankfully the guys do none of it technically, but for some mild verbal stuff for a little while. And she gives them what for anyway, which is satisfying.

This was an amazing start to a new series! I was hooked from the blurb since is was an academy bully RH and it exceeded my expectations and took a shocking and heartbreaking turn at one point. Alyssa is a human who suffers from epilepsy and is forced to go to the Academy of the Devil or else her condition will become severely worse, but at least she can take her best friend/ dog, Shiro. The Academy of the Devil is not at all what she expected and her life turns upside down. Their kind acts different than humans- when someone is nice to you, they have a hidden agenda; when someone, or a group of someones, are mean to you, they like and care about you. Alyssa had a great personality and I was impressed that even with her condition she did her best to not let people push her around and still lived the best life that she could, which I found pretty inspiring. Callum, Stefan, and Mikael were well thought characters with depth and personal growth which I thought made them seem realistic/ human. This book was filled with snark, violence, bullying, steamy scenes, a few twists and turns, but one of them really got to me to where I had to take a break before I could continue reading. I loved the world that Eva has created and I honestly felt like I was there with Alyssa and Shiro on their journey and I was feeling their emotions with them. I enjoyed the different classes that she had to take and how different the teachers were from her normal life. I definitely can’t wait for the next book because I need more answers after that epilogue and Shiro’s short story!

A Hellish Year One was one awkward mess of a book with all of the potential that was quite wasted and unexplored.

The convoluted reason of why Alyssa needs to attend the academy should have been my cue to the confusion that's going to the continue but I was optimistic thinking it might be just a rushed attempt to get to the academy for chunkier content. Nope. The bullying aspect of the book wasn't what I expected. The guys in her harem just have like brief scenes of insulting Alyssa and rest of the time it's just implied through her thoughts before they are fighting over her as a sorry? Other characters were so abrupt, they are not harshly bullying Alyssa before she manages to have friends and interact with demons before it's back to bullying like it was nothing because of her condition, I mean this flipped switch behavior was so noticeable. I really couldn't feel like this book had any sense of flow. Things are so abrupt and taking place for the sake of the story instead of having enough content to make sense for it to happen.

The characters are bare bones at best. Alyssa obviously feels more thought-out with her epilepsy and not to mention it's her sole POV throughout the book. Man I think even Shiro had more personality than the harem. A fucking dog showed me more than three supernatural creatures that had interesting powers but shitty blank personalities. The weird ass relationship between Alyssa and the guys has no emotions, it's the most blankest harem development I have seen till now. They don't have enough bullying scenes, they don't get enough sorry-we-were-wrong scenes and then it's back to bullying BS that is again back to sorry-that-wasn't-right. Duuuude, can we get enough space and time to actually see any of that before the whiplash?

Despite the awkwardness and the weirdly hollow end scene, I'm still intrigued with what's the deal with Alyssa... at least enough to risk reading the second one.

So I’ve read a lot of academy reads lately and there are a lot of great ones out there and this one is very good! A little different from some as this is what they call a bully romance, this reverse harem does contain violence, ableism and bullying but is very addictive! A school of demons this has some steamy scenes, twists and turns and some hot guys and then there’s Alyssa, I just love her! A fantastic start!

Dang, I sorta kinda miss the days when I didn't use to write reviews for books when I finished them.

When you just chuck it and say NEXT.

I think this is undoubtedly due to the vast amount of screen time that being a teacher has become.

But....i will persevere. Cause this book deserves that.

Wow. Like, actually, WOW. This book was entertaining. A paranormal bully academy romance with a heroine (not the drug) that I could stand?

Impressive. Lyssa wasn't the simpering pushover, who got all out of sorts when the meany-pants stud was mean to her (or...basically everyone at this demon high). She had some gumption (considering the insane situation she is in), though I found her CONSTANT referring to anime, well, a tad....

Don't be fooled y'all. I would say this is in no way a romance...
Like...at all...and there was supposedly three romantic H's here.....MMMMM can you hear the crickets a chirpin, cause nah. No romance here.
The relationship between L and them has really no structure at all. I really hope the next book will actually build on that, cause honestly, even at the end of this book I'm not feeling it at all. I'd like to say that the whiplash was an effect of them being demons and all, but you can't have feelings whiplash, if you were just friends...

But despite the decided Lack of romance, this book more than delivered on the world and story building.
Come on, I, yes you heard me right I admit to crying in the last third of this book. ( BUT, the reason I cried is usually something that i deem ANY author irredeemable for...but she somewhat made up for it ) Trust me. You will understand when you get to it.

So now that I have officially spent almost 9 hours in front of a screen, I shall now be moving to a smaller screen AKA. My Kindle, to immediately start the next book.

Fingers crossed for some romance steam BUILDING here.

What the hell did I just read? 😂

Please don’t read this if you don’t like:
- inc3st (not the MCs but still)
- public masturbation
- public sexual acts
- teachers having sex in classrooms all the time with students or… weird stuff
- characters whose sole personality trait is their sexual preferences

If you’re good with that, have fun while it’s free!

The premise was a bit sus, some things didn’t make sense, but I thought well maybe there’ll be some explaining of the weird things that didn’t add up. There wasn’t until what I initially thought was an epilogue but actually wasn’t and was ridiculous when you think about it? Sort of “here, take this plot twist you didn’t see coming that happens before the story starts and doesn’t make much sense but who cares because we’re jumping right back to the present timeline?” Anyway, that wasn’t the weirdest thing so 🤷🏻‍♀️

The book had what it takes to be very enjoyable. Unfortunately, it shell short, and I’m being polite here. I love smut, I hate random sex acts for shock value. I love consent, I hate reading about 3 guys saying “come with us it’s not for sex” and trying to sex the fmc first thing when they get to their destination. I love characters who have personality traits and are not cardboard versions of stereotypes. I love meetcutes, not one of the mmc fingering a classmate while talking to the fmc for the first time. But that’s me 🤷🏻‍♀️

The nice thing though is I laughed a lot. Pretty sure it wasn’t the intention, but I will read the next one as I have it thanks to the trilogy presently being free on audible. Some books are so bad they’re enjoyable. This is one of them.

I have been on an academy and bully kick, so when I heard about Academy of the Devil, I was intrigued. I love a good devilish book, ha!! So Cheesy, but true!! A Hellish Year One hooked me from the beginning. I mean stuff happens when she first gets there that, had me even going, "What the hell just happened", " Did he just?" and the answer to those questions are "I don't know" and " Yes, yes he did".

Okay, the basis of the story is about a girl who just turned 18. Her name is Alyssa Michaelis. She is visited by a cherub named Lenoir. He delivers news about how she is to attend The Academy of the Devil because of a deal an ancestor made. Sucks right! She is a fun character to read. She has some funny dialogue. We get to see, as the story progresses just how much of a fierce character she is.

The guys, Callum, Mikael and Stefan. At first I really was not digging any of them. I couldn't make up my mind, do I like them, and then no. But wait, I like them they are so freaking hot, but..... no. As the story moves on, I am happy to report that yeah, I like them, a lot!!

Eva has a great way of describing the world and characters that it makes you feel like you are there. The story is fast paced, and before you know it, you are at the end. Left needing more in this series.

So overall, this is a great start to a new bully rh that is really going to be a great series. I would definitely recommend adding A Hellish Year One to your TBR pile.

I like demons okay?

This book has more slow-burn relationship teasing than the actual building.
The romantic aspect contains a reverse harem and I am not into polygamy so I mostly avoid those books. I was not aware this was one but here I somehow did not mind it because, for some reason, it seemed believable since it is demons …
There are a lot of sexually explicit scenes but no sexual content between MC and her harem. They did not even really kiss, so it is not steamy in particular, the sex scenes have more of a shock value and are not particularly described.
This book has some harsh topics such as death, bullying, revenge, sickness, and excluding behaviour.

Magic, demons and gods are not well explained and there is no world-building here.

The characters are not well developed, but the building of the context and location of the story is well developed. There is a description of classes and general life.

There is some plot, there are mysteries around why Alyssa is as she is, how she ended up in the situation and her abilities. There are no answers but this is a good start for possible solid development.

The plot is important to me even in romance books. I like when there are both. In that sense this book is okay.

Received ARC for Honest Review.
I Give this book 3.5/5, listing as 4.
Highly Enjoyable Book!
I love Bully romances especially reverse harem ones, and this was a nice addition even though it is a little tamer than my usual types. :)
Looking forward to the rest of the series!
As soon as I saw anime was mentioned within the book, my mind immediately switched from ‘real people’ to anime characters, this book has anime potential actually because it’s easy and well written and easy to visualize as one and that was a breath of fresh air to me, it some how made this book even more enjoyable when you ‘watch’ it mentally as an anime or drama.
Really cool, definitely buying!

Looking forward to reading more from this Author! :D

Ok, I’ll say it: this book made me ugly cry. Full on ugly cry. So why the 5 star review? Because for an author to put that much emotion into one scene, just one, takes talent. The story line was good and honestly kept me entertained and thrilled to continue reading. I’m excited for the next book because I need to find out how Alyssa is going to handle these three stooges....or is it going to be four? 😉. Also Shiro for the win!!!

Not really a fan of the way Lyssa foreshadows events, or the way her RH treat her, but the premise is interesting enough - in a mindlessly entertaining sort of way.

Alyssa finds out does she has to go to a school called The academy of the devil she has no idea what to expect so she goes and is scared to death she also has epilepsy that can make her have seizures and pass out for a very long time her dad told her not to let anyone know and show weakness. The conjuring 2 the school he binds up things are not what they seem everyone has sex out me open everyone calls her sacrifice and everyone is mean to her and she has no idea why. At first she doesn't put up with it she stands up for herself but that can also be scary among the devils. She ends up catching the eyes from the three princes she also finds out her dog is called a familiar who has a soul and understands her and what she needs and chose her worthy of him. But at the school everyone is cruel and they kill her familiar and she would do anything to have him back the three princes go against the school and helper save her familiar. And in doing so this put macau's life in danger to where they were going to kill him so she claimed him as a familiar as well now I really want is very mean to Miguel and she doesn't know if he is grateful she saved him or upset all she knows is that she has to continue Archer and she's hoping to do so with Mikhail by her side she also finds out she has powers. What will year two bring for her.
