First published back in 1995, Following Ghosts has a dedicated following. This revised edition contains new material, including John’s simple two-step approach to starting a tracking dog. Based on John Rice’s extensive experiences with his all Golden Retriever Police K-9 unit. Not a how-to recipe book, Following Ghosts offers a revolutionary and challenging look at tracking
This was a quick and enjoyable read, gave me lots of things to think about in regards to training tracking and all the different approaches.
It’s a lot less technical than the Facebook page and is geared towards beginner tracks, beginner dogs, troubleshooting and the runaway tracking through drive approach.
It’s short and sweet but I really enjoyed it and the beginner steps of runaways has me excited to start the runaway process with next tracking dog!
I’ll keep my current dog to his article first detection based method though, since he grew up on that.
Good book would recommend to both the beginner tracker and the tracking enthusiast!
The author has a facebook page by the same name where they post once in a bluemoon on tracking scenarios and invite discussion. Do recommend viewing this facebook page to gather insight into the technical topics the book covers.
Very straightforward and easy to read. It’s not an in-depth explanation, but that’s also why it’s very good. The information is practical and accessible for Beginners, Novices and the more Experienced Trackers.
