For three generations, an uneasy truce has existed between the shapeshifter packs of Wolfhaven and Silver Ridge. But Equinox is fast approaching; and all is about to change.
Connell, grandson of Wolfhaven’s chief, is hungry for adventure; and eager to explore the world beyond the boundaries of where he grew up. Is this a plan set for failure? Only Lupa, Goddess of Wolves, can know; for it is she who bends destiny to her will.
Thayer, heir apparent and Connell's older brother, has found love with Lena – Mistress of the Moon – and daughter of Silver Ridge's alpha. Yet, the course of true love never runs smooth. Lena is matched to another. A wolf of her father's choosing.
Fierce and strong, Kellan is Arden's second and will make the perfect mate. If only Lena wished it. Silver Ridge, a world of zealotry and submission, is no place for a freethinking female. Especially not one, whose lover whispers of a world beyond her father’s reach.
Will Connell's dreams of freedom and adventure be thwarted, as Thayer and Kellan challenge for the right to claim Lena as their own? Or will Lena resolve to put the traditions of her pack and the demands of her father over those of her own heart?
Jay was raised on a balanced diet of Star Wars, 80's TV, and romance novels. So, naturally, she has a partiality for tall, dark-haired, space heroes and military men in thigh holsters.
When she's not having lunch with her most-excellent author friends or marathoning Netflix, you can catch Jay writing sexy space adventures, wolf-shifter escapades, and contemporary action romances.
Despite the many trials and tribulations of her characters, it is universally acknowledged that they will discover their one great love. A love all time and space will lie down and be still for.
For three generations an uneasy truce has existed between the shapshifter packs of Wolfhaven and Silver Ridge. But Equinox is fast approaching and everything is about to change.
Connell, grandson of Wolfhaven's chief wants nothing more then adventure; and to explore the world beyond the boundaries of where he has grown up. Is this a plan set for failure? Only Lupa, Godess of wolves, can know; for it is she who bends destiny to her will.
Thayer, heir apparent who is also Connell's older brother has found love with Lena who is Mistress of the Moon and daughter of Silver Ridge's Alpha. Lena is actually matched to another. A wolf of her father's choosing who will become Alpha after mating with Lena.
Kellen is Ardens second and will make the perfect mate. If only Lena wished it. There will be a fight and some will die, but who? Will Lena resolve to put the traditions of her pack above all or will she go for love and say to hell with the pack?
I have never read a book like this before and I really enjoyed it. Jay Shaw knows how to write a paranormal book with twists and turns I certainly didn't see coming and the only word that comes to mind is wow you have to read this book. It took me less then 2 days to read it as I couldn't keep away from it. The ending blew me away and I look forward to reading more of Ms. Shaw's books in the future.
Wow! What in the world did I just read?! Totally did not see that coming! First, let me just say I don't usually read paranormal romance....not my thing. However, I was offered this as an arc for an honest review. So I thought, what the heck, I'll give it a try. Can't say I have changed my mind about this genre. BUT, this book was well written, and by the end of the book I had to pick my jaw up off the floor! Mind Blown!
Wolfhaven by Jay Shaw is a paranormal shifter romance story, that is the first book in the Duality Series.
I was converted to this genre a little while ago, so when I seen that Wolfhaven was a shifter book I just has to read it and I wasn't disappointed at all - I was hooked after the first chapter.
Wolfhaven and Silver Ridge, two wolf shifter packs separated by a feud. Wolfhaven, is a pack that encourages their human side to be seen and allows all within the pack to choose their own mate. While Silver Ridge prefer to remain as wolves and are told who they will mate with. Two different packs with two equally different ways of living. Equinox is about to change the two packs forever.
When Thayer, next in line to be chief at Wolfhaven, finds a female wolf that he loves and wants to mate with all should be simple, unless the female is Lena, the heiress of Silver Ridge and is already promised to another - Kellan, next in line to be alpha at Silver Ridge but only if he mates with Lena. Thayer goes to Silver Ridge to fight for the right to claim Lena as his own. Will he return victorious?
Will Connell, a young carefree wolf who just wants to have fun and patrol the borders of Wolfhaven be able to help his brother, someone he has looked upto since he was just a pup. What will he and the pack at Wolfhaven decide when Lena is brought to their side, struggling? Will they help her or push her away back to Silver Ridge where she belongs? Or will the revelation they are about to discover change things forever?
Wolfhaven is truly an amazing read, with some twists that you don't see coming - it will have you feeling all sorts of emotions. I can't recommend this story enough. I can't wait for more.
"This night would be the longest she'd ever endured. And now he was back, she didn't know how she had survived so long without him in her life."
Going in to this read, I wasn't sure what to expect. Was it going to be a typical shifter book? Humans hiding their secret otherworldly identities? A human falling in love with a shifter? Or was this going to be different? Let me tell you, it was different!! I really enjoyed it! It was a love story, a story of rivalry, a battle of both body and heart, a show of brotherhood and compassion, of right and wrong. There are lighthearted parts, and heartbreaking parts; parts that made me smile, and parts that made me tear up.
One pack, Wolfhaven, embraces both their human side and their wolf side. The other rejects their human side. Wolfhaven claims a mate out of love while the other claims a mate for power. All of it comes to a head when Thay, the heir to be chief of Wolfhaven finds love with Lena, the daughter of their rival pack. She has been promised to Kellan, and in doing so, Kellan will become Alpha - something he won't easily give up. But Thay won't give her up either. What happens when the war for Lena's heart rips both packs apart? When it breaks Lena in more ways than one?
When Lena comes to Wolfhaven for help, will they set aside the rivalry for the good of their pack or turn her away?
I don't want to give too much of the story away, but there are a few unexpected twists, one of which made me audibly gasp. Can't wait to see what's next!!
I've read quite a bit by Ms. Shaw, and high hopes for this story. Alas, this is not one of my favorites. The main character, from whose pov the story is told, his story is an afterthought at the very end of the book. It's mainly about his brother and mate, and arising conflict. The storyline seems very rushed, and has minimal character development. True to normal form from Jay Shaw, it does have vivid scenery and descriptors, and makes you feel like you are there with the characters in the thick of things. Thank you for the opportunity to review this work.
What a story! Not my usual read but I'm so happy I chose this book. From the first chapter I knew I was going to be swept along by Jay's beautiful writing style and imagery. The frozen other-land and man/wolf/man, woman/wolf/woman merged without hesitation. To read a genre completely unknown to me and yet become immersed in their world immediately is surreal. Well done, Jay, for your debut!
This is the first book I've read by this author. Not knowing what to expect, I thought it would be werewolves by numbers, but I was shocked to discover Ms. Shaw had created a world entirely her own. Likeable characters with a twist I wasn't expecting, the book was descriptive and well written. I await Part Two with baited breath.
This author has a very unique take on werewolves. The book was refreshing and very well written. She has an excellent way of describing her scenes very vividly. Nicely done!
In an isolated area of the country, far away from society in general live two groups, that long ago used to be one. Wolfhaven and Silver Ridge, over in Silver Ridge they detest their human side and avoid shifting into it, staying in wolf form at all times, living in caves and living a completely rigidly controlled life by a powerful alpha. In Wolfhaven, they embrace the human side as much as the wolf side, understanding that both sides are equally important. They have built a functioning society with a common house for meals and cabins for family sleeping, along with a structured hierarchy of rule. Wolfhaven focuses mostly on life in Wolfhaven, but not just general life it focuses on the Grandmother, who is the leader of the pack, and the two grandson's, the oldest that is expected to take over Trey, and the younger Connell. This is more than a simple romance, this is a love story against all odds, this is a family saga, this is life and death, this is democracy vs dictatorship. Author Jay Shaw has created a deep and multilayered story of relationships, give and take, ruling with heart and compassion and family life.
Wolfhaven is written in such a way that you feel that it is covering generations, when in reality it only covers maybe a year in reality, but so many things occur. Author Jay Shaw has created so many complex layers and stories within stories going on, that when you sit back and think about the scenarios he put forth, mates across pack boundaries, you can see society and marriages across racial and ethnical divides. Although this is listed as a paranormal romance, it is a family sage and a novel that if you take the time to read and think about what you have read, you can draw parallels and your own conclusions to society today. There is some violence, a dual for a mate, then an ambush along with some very sexist language from some parties, and consensual and nonconsensual sexual encounters, so I definitely recommend it for a more mature audience.
This was the first time I have read a book by Jay Shaw, and one thing is for sure, it will not be the last. The story was written so beautifully, I wanted to cry. I felt like I crawled into the skin of Lena or Connell when it was their part of the story because each character was fleshed out so perfectly. I will anxiously wait for book two to be released. I would highly recommend this book to my family and friends.
An amazing story, flowed beautifully, characters were brilliant. This book was amazing once I started it I couldn't put it down, was heartbroken and amazed all at the same time. The paths that it takes you on is a journey that I'm glad I took.
I could not express just how much I adore this book. The story is gripping, passionate, compelling and above all wonderfully woven. There are no secondary characters in this story, they all have their own loves and losses and big personalities! The main characters broke my heart, and then stitched it back together again. If you want something that will make you laugh, cry and have to open a window for fear of heat stroke, this is the story for you!
A shifter romance with a twist, this story was original, unexpected and easy to read. The characters were likeable and engaging, Connell wasn’t a favourite of mine but I genuinely cared about what would become of Lena and Thayer, a couple for whose love went against what both their packs believed was right. Well written with a good pace, this story kept me interested until the slightly unexpected end.
This is a great book. Totally engaging from the get-go, the characters draw you into the story and I just couldn't put it down. I was so happy to see "Book 1" on the cover! Can't wait for more x
This was an ok read. It started really well, the main character was interesting and engaging and a connection with the reader started to form instantly. Unfortunately, the next while was spent with a different character taking over the narrative, and she did not have the same pull. Her character was a one dimensional victim with no depth. There was just nothing about her that made you connect or want to follow her story. After her defection the story picks up its pace quite a lot. This takes the form of time jumps of weeks or months, though its not really clear exactly as the rate of ageing in babies/pups is accelerated. Some of these jumps take you to a conversation thats not really important for the story and then jump again to a major event. I hate to say it, but the story just became boring and flat. Even the scenes where there is major action read like a dry account in a history text. Rather than making you feel tension, suspense, chills and heightened emotions it was just eh. The split POV in this book let it down immensely. The connection that was almost instant at the start of the book fizzled out by the time we were back in his head, and it was never rebuilt. As a draft this book has potential, but as a completed work it misses the mark. I received a complimentary copy from VRO in return for an honest review.
This shape shifter story stood out against a myriad of others in the genre. Like many, it was packed with romance and a fair amount of steam within its pages. However, Wolfhaven offered more. Not only was it well written, with a rhythm that had the reader unaware of how many pages they'd turned, but it was rich with the type of detail that really puts a reader right in the scene with the characters. It isn't often you find a story where the author both separates and defines the characteristics of shifters from those of humans so succinctly. Rather than demonstrate humans who happen to have another form, Wolfhaven spins the axis, portraying the wolf as the centrepiece. The instincts, mannerisms and behavior of these creatures was a delight. My only disappointment was in discovering plot points I'd been enjoying would not continue. Not because of the quality of the writing, but because I had fallen in love with the characters. It was not the ending I'd expected, so I'm interested to see where the series goes next. A recommended read.
Not my usual genre but I thought I'd give it a try. I'm so glad that I did. Having not read any other books of this type I do not have any to compare. With that said, I loved the story and the writing style of Jay Shaw. She took me to places I had never given thought. The characters were well developed and the plot could have been the same ol, same ol, with forbidden love but it wasn't. I laughed in parts, wanted to cry in others, and was totally taken surprised by some. Without giving anything away, my first thought was this would never happen but then I started wondering. After all, these beings are partly human, so wouldn't they have part human traits unlike pure animal behavior? This book left me wanting to visit Wolfhaven. To sit and cuddle with the wolves, then sit, eat and drink while listening to their stories. This was the first book I have read by Jay Shaw. It won't be my last.
I didn't put a star rating on this one because it was more a me vs the story quality. It leaned too heavy into the A/B/O thing and I was ready to tap out early on when one of the villain characters suggested the female werewolf (daughter of one of the leaders) needed to be paired off and publicly bred against her will.
I loved this paranormal romance. The description are intense and yet subtle. It leads your imagination with just enough description. I especially liked the fact that the characters didn't suddenly lose control of their sense as they were overpowered by attraction.
4.5 stars The way this story is written feels like your in an enchanted world. And that may very well be true as two packs fight over old passages and the right for Mistress of the Moon. As equinox approaches, many things in Wolfhaven are changing and the unknown is the scariest of them all for Connell especially with the challenges he faces. I really enjoyed this PNR from new to me author Jay Shaw. She definitely executed an emotionally charged read and one of a series I can't wait to read more of. This comes recommended.
I really enjoyed reading Wolfhaven by Jay Shaw. I found it a complex story with compelling characters. I found the lead character Connell inspiring and I felt like I was seeing his world through his eyes and all the trials and tribulations that a family goes through in life and love. This book made me laugh, love and feel sorrow and then happiness again. I highly recommend everyone to read it you wont be disappointed.
