The Moment We Fell

Rate this book
Nothing good happens when people keep secrets. Paige Bryant’s dreams of becoming a professional ballet dancer died along with her mother. Drowning in grief and plagued by guilt, Paige is blindsided by a provision in her mother’s will that sends her to live with the father she never knew. Forced to start over in a new town, and at a new school where she's now the principal's daughter, Paige is convinced that her life can’t possibly get more complicated—until fate throws her into the path of the only boy her guardian tells her is off-limits. Despite two years on the straight and narrow, Cade Matthews can’t escape his time as a juvenile delinquent. With his dad behind bars, Cade’s feelings of anger and betrayal are as relentless as the rumors he’s trying to outrun. The only person not listening to the gossip is the new girl with her own set of troubles, including a father who will never give Cade a fair shake. As Paige tries to adjust to her new life and an uncertain future, a set of unopened journals reveals a dark family secret. When tensions rise to a boiling point, can Paige and Cade make peace with the past before it destroys them?

Disclaimer: This review MAY contain spoilers. I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions expressed in my review are my own.

This is a very touching story about coming to terms with loss and being accepting to change. I was really touched by this story. Both of the main characters experience and deal with loss and changes in their lives in different ways. I loved the overall theme of how much choice -- both the choices that we make in response to our pain and the choice that we make to either accept or reject our pain -- can play a determining factor in how far one can fall down the rabbit hole or how high one can rise after a fall.

I enjoyed the voices of both main characters. I didn't feel overly connected to them, but they weren't bland by any means. They actually had quite a lot of depth. I was certainly interested in their story. They each had similar issues that ran deep. They had both lost their mothers and then had their lives turned upside down afterward. I loved the impressive character growth for both characters over the course of the story. They each have to deal with their suppressed feelings and learn to let go of the pain that is holding them back. It is beautiful how they both help each other do this through the other. They are certainly very much changed people from the start of the book to where they end up at the close of the book. I also enjoyed the side characters. Macy and Quinn were delightful. Shawn and Connie were so likable. I loved Tanner and Lily. I even liked Jay's character, though it is hard to understand his motives in the beginning. All of the characters flowed well with each other.

The plot of the story is good, but I can't help but notice the similarities in the plot of this book and the 2001 movie, Save the Last Dance. They both basically have the same premise, though not everything is exactly the same. A high school girl that dances ballet has to move in with her estranged father and uproot her life when her mother is killed in a car accident that she feels responsible for. I couldn't help but immediately think of the similarities, unfortunately. While they are both similar, this book did stand out in the emotion that the weaving of the plot produces.

The romance was okay, not great. It seemed like the romance in the story took a backseat to the overall theme of dealing with grief and loss. I liked both main characters together and apart, but their romance felt a little rushed to me. It wasn't exactly instalove, but the introductory period when you get to know someone felt like it was skipped over. I did like that when they were together they really talked and seemed to get to know each other on a deeper level that way. While they definitely worked as a couple and I enjoyed their story, I didn't feel passionate about their romance at all.

Overall, touching and emotional read that was impossible to put down! While I didn't love it as much as Warner's first book, Not with the Band, it is still a well-written story with very realistic characters. It was a pleasure to read this and I can't wait for Warner's next book!

*I received this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own!*

The Moment We Fell is a touching story, full of loss and change that depicts the lives of two completely different characters. But, as we all know, opposites do attract more often than not and can either collide or fit in together like a puzzle. The story follows Paige, a dancer whose mother dies and she's forced leave the life she knew behind, in order to live with her estranged father. She gives up dancing in the process and her life is turned even more upside down when she meets Cade. He's basically the bad boy your parents warned you to stay away from and that is exactly what Paige's father does. She's the principal's daughter and he's a juvenile delinquent whose life hasn't been that easy. They both had to deal with grief and let go of the past in order to move towards a better future!

I really enjoyed how the author dealt with the topic at hand and did not focus too much on the romance between the two main characters. It was truly a breath of fresh air that I'd like to experience more when reading Young Adult novels! It was really easy for me to get through the story itself and actually relate to it. The writing wasn't one of the novel's strongest points in my opinion, but it was still delightful to read. The novel was pretty well structured, after all, which is why I didn't mind the minor misfortunes I encountered throughout it.

The characters were well written, which made them easy to relate to and sympathize with. I could really feel Paige's anguish and Cade's frustration while reading. Their relationship wasn't all rainbows and butterflies and, even though the author could've explored it to its full potential by delving a little deeper in its development, I really liked how it progressed. Both of them tried to work through their problems better than any adult would've had the courage to and deal with the things they'd lost in the process. Their development throughout the novel wasn't extraordinary, but it was definitely enough. The secondary characters were also an integral part of the story, even though we didn't get such a huge glimpse of where they came from.

Would I recommend The Moment We Fell? Probably, yes! Especially if you're a fan of novels that deal with grief and follow characters that have to adapt to it through change. It wasn't the best novel I've ever read, nor was I impressed by it, but I definitely enjoyed how quick and light it was to read! It was a truly heartbreaking story and I feel like it depicted the struggles of feeling like an outsider in a, seemingly, familiar place, pretty well! The characters were likable and easy to connect to, which always makes it easier for me, as a reader, to have a nice reading experience and follow their journey without feeling left out. I feel like the novel would be a great summer read so, now is the time for you to pick it up, if you're thinking about giving it a try!

I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. I can't remember the number of times I shed a few tears reading this. It's crazy because I've never experienced a huge loss like the main characters did but this book really tugged at something inside of me. Get this book and read it, I can't recommend it enough.

This was very good. 4.5 stars.

This is a sweet YA romance with healing from trauma for our male and female protagonists. I loved their relationship development and the family dynamics as they all grew together. I also liked the portrayal of real hurt and fights of real people,, because that is a real part of real life.. Highly recommend this book if you enjoy YA (and its squeaky clean!).

okay, this book disappointed me a bit! At first, I was like this is going to be great! It's going to have a beautiful story, with a message and some meaningful prose, but it all fell a little flat!

As the story progressed I became a bit more disappointed with HOW it was written. The writing seemed slightly amateurish and held a lot of cliches in it's writing. Maybe if you're still a teenage girl you won't notice that part as much, but the conversations within the story between friends and the love interest were just okay.

Also Paige towards the end started to get ton my nerves. She thinks no one could ever understand what she's been through meanwhile Cadee is right there e(her bar) and he's been. through a hell of a lot! I was like UMMM GIRLLL WHY YOU BEING SO RUDE!! CADE HAS HAD A ROUGH LIFE TOO!

She was being a smidge sassy and dramatic towards the end and I just wasn't here for it!

There was a happily ever after which always makes me happy, but towards the end, I was honestly just skimming to see what happens.

MEERPPPP!! I was hoping for some poignant beautiful love story, but I was left disappointed!

Oh well! On to the next read!!

Although this was my first time reading this author, it certainly will not be the last time. Described as teen & young adult romance, this novel is about a seventeen-year-old girl, Paige, who after losing her mother suddenly is sent to live with a father that she never knew about and also has decided to give up her passion for dance, that she has been doing since she was four-years-old. New in town and new to her new home with her father, step-mother, and half-siblings, Paige makes friends easily but is drawn to the "bad-boy" Cade. Cade has also suffered incredible loss, as well as, gotten involved in bad crowds leading to trouble. However, he has turned his life around despite still dealing with his emotions about everything that has happened with his parents. Cade and Paige find themselves unlikely friends and sharing things they tell no one else about their losses, hopes, and dreams. But their emotional baggage coupled with Paiges's Dad's adamant warnings about her staying away from Cade repeatedly stands in their way.

So, I don't read a ton of Teen/Young Adult novels, but this one piqued my interest. And, I'm so glad to have read it. The Moment We Fell is very emotional and oftentimes, contains difficult subject matter about death and dying. Think back to when you were seventeen and felt like the world was on your shoulders at times... This was Paige and Cade for the majority of the novel and Warner's writing and imagery is so real and well-done that there were times while I was reading that I could feel the characters' tension, sadness, anxiety, and regret right along with them.

Reading this novel will have you praying for people to give Cade the second-chance he deserves, cheering and rooting for Paige to re-discover her passion for dance, and whole-heartedly hoping that these two teenagers can find the peace and happiness that they deserve. The only thing that left me a little unsettled was the ending because I love a clear-cut happy ending in things that I read. The ending to The Moment We Fell is certainly hopeful, but I couldn't help but long for more about what happens to these amazing characters in the future.

I found this book after reading Not With The Band, so decided to continue on with some easy reads.

Again, the writing was very simple and easy, and there were some complex problems dealt with. They seemed to go over a little too quickly and with too much simplicity, but it is a young adult book dealing with teenagers.

I really appreciated having the more mature character of Cade, due to what he had been through, and I wish we’d heard a little more from him? I feel like I definitely had some questions that weren’t answered, which made his experience feel a little less believable. While some of his actions of running away were frustrating, especially considering he was a bit more mature, it also fit well and was understandable.

We heard more from Paige, and I saw her more as the main character. While she was dealing with a lot of grief, and the fact she had so many unanswered questions, she still acted so immaturely at times it was hard to like her. Again though, she is a teen dealing with grief, so I think this fit.

I was overall annoyed at the fact that people didn’t just say things, which is a real life thing really, but like Not With The Band, it felt very movie-like, where you know it couldn’t have actually ended there, but you’re at cut scene. I guess I don’t experience this quite as much in the books I typically read, so I have found it a little annoying. It just felt like there were so many holes that could have been filled to make it a more interesting story. Especially considering this is labeled as “book one” it really feels like the author could have fleshed some things out, jumped into some things a little more, and taken her time with the story more.

But, just like with her previous book, this makes for a quick read that’s pretty easy to take in and a bit of a palate-cleanser between “heavier” books or during those times when emotionally you need something easy.

I will be looking out for book two!

The moment we fell
By Kelli Warner

4 out of 5 stakes!!

This book is so cute and the way the characters are presented are awesome.
We meet Paige whom I have to say is just terrific. Not only does she have to go live a father she doesn't even really know, she gives up dancing for awhile. And then starting in a new place and meeting new people isn't exactly what she wants to do. But those are her mother's wishes when she passed away.
Just when she is fitting in she meets Cade and right away the rumors she has heard doesn't really seem to go with who is talking with her.
But when her father tells her she must not talk with Cade because he is bad news. Due to his family's history and his. Paige almost seems like she wants to listen to her father.
Cade he just wants the past to stay in the past. Cade honestly for me was just the perfect crush worthy character. Here he was trying to make amends for everything in the past that happened. But no one wanted to give him a chance really.

But when Paige learns secrets of her own family's history thing take on a change.
I don't want to give away anything and I probably let on to a spoiler and if so I'm sorry for that.
Please pick this wonderful book up today.

First of all, I've wanted to read Kelli Warner's work for a while now. I don't remember when or where I got the recommendation, but her book "Not with the Band" is on my TBR. LOL. "The Moment We Fell" was not a quick read, but I was definitely glued to my seat each time I picked it up. I absolutely loved Cade. I try to avoid stereotypes, but I genuinely love a reformed bad boy with a secret. Its my guilty pleasure. I love a real character. Paige was real and relatable, and I totally feel for her.
What would you do if your "principal-father" told you a certain boy was off-limits? You'd become curious, wouldn't you? I know I would! Off-topic, its classic reverse-psychology! If you tell someone they can't, they are going to DO. Okay, I'm done.
If you're a fan of Ava Wood's "Broken by the Sea Trilogy", you will definitely like "The Moment We Fell". Now if you will excuse me, I think this is a book deserving of a re-read. :D

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this book. This is my honest review.

3.5 stars.
This story is an interesting story about starting over and young love. Paige Bryant has to move in with her father after her mother passed away. The problem is that she didn’t know she had a father until her mother’s Will was read and he didn’t know about her either. Dealing with the loss of the only parent one knows and moving with the new parent who has a family...what a dicey situation for a grieving adolescent. Then add the fact that her new dad is the principal of her new high school, that spells awkward Paige’s social life.

Paige does make a connect with the resident bad boy Cade Matthews and they bonded over mutual loss. Soon, the sneaking around begins. The journey for Paige was wrought with angst, anger, forgiveness and healing.

My man issue was her mother’s secret and diary, and the ending was really rushed. Other than that, this was a solid story, written in a realistic manner. I liked all the characters and was pleased with ending.

I’ve never read a book that had me so conflicted about liking it before. I felt the story was really great, but the execution was awful. The timing of the entire book was so slow and then at 80% it was insanely fast.

What happened to Paige at the end was so not necessary and felt a bit over the top.

The first kiss scene was horrible. They barely knew each other and they already were acting all lovey. It was annoying and made zero sense.

Cade’s character felt disjointed. He was a standoffish guy who didn’t trust or like anyone. He meets Paige and instantly likes her and starts letting her in. So unrealistic for his character.

Umm, I think it’s a 3.5 and maybe a few moments are 4⭐️. Honestly, I don’t even know how to rate this. I hated it so much, but couldn’t ever put it down… so, who knows.

Healing Story With Depth

I just finished this sweet story about loss and healing. The journey Paige goes through is well thought out and described in perfect detail. Loss affects all of us in so many different ways, but healing is possible if we allow it into our hearts. Thank you so much for this beautiful story !

Very clean book. Only a few kisses, most of which are abstract not detailed. Very good plot and delivery of loss. The main characters are someone you can identify with and the secondary characters are just as entertaining as the main ones.

I would definitely recommend.

Beautiful and Heartfelt, this is a story about choices and second chances.
I’m not sure if I agree with how some of the issues were fixed, but I loved the dialogues, the descriptions of emotions and feelings and the way the story was built.
100% recommended.

Paige's life got turned upside down when her mother died. Not only did she finally learn about the father she never knew, but she was given over to his care. He lives miles away, with a family of his own, and he's the principal of the new school she'll attend. Just. Great. But at least her first day carries a little drama--enough to distract from the "principal's daughter who appeared out of nowhere." And of course, it comes in the form of a hot guy. A guy with rumors and a past. And according to "dear old dad," he's not to be befriended. Because that always works.

This was a sweet romance between two people who had given up on themselves. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and what made them tick. The setting was warm and the writing carried the small town feel well.

The journals added a neat twist to the one character that couldn't speak: Paige's mom. Plus, they added a layer of "why?" and "what happened?" that kept the story fresh and the pages turning.

My only contention was with how it ended. It wasn't a bad ending, but the climax left me feeling like Paige had flipped a switch, rather than come to some sort of revelation.

Still, if you like sweet romances, bad boys with motorcycles and guitars, and a good rumor or two, check out The Moment We Fell. :)
