Alphonse Malloy may just be the smartest man alive.
A year has passed since Alphonse joined the Constables, but his work is only just beginning. In order to graduate and achieve full Constable status, Alphonse will need to complete one final mission. When new information about an old enemy arises, Al and his mentor Dorian must head deep into the Deadlands in search of answers. But in a galaxy of secrets, the truth is often more elusive than it seems. As the search continues, Alphonse's talents will be pushed to their absolute limit, and he'll need everything he's learned to make it out of this one alive.
Experience the exciting conclusion to the story started in the Constable.
This was a great follow up to The Constable and really gives us a look at how Alphonse came to be. I loved understanding his background and look forward to more prequels in this universe
Setting: Space somewhere, not important. Language: Language is straightforward and there are no fake "future" words that I remember Character: Main character is a very talented, almost magical young man who is being trained to be a type of law officer. He is going through his "second chance" after some highly wayward life choices. He is learning to filter himself, get along better with colleagues, and is maturing. Becoming a more likable character along the way. Plot: So the main character must take his "final exam" to complete his personal redemption ark. Of course it all goes pear shaped, it always does. We have action, adventures, mystery, crime and so on. This is all very obvious from the book blurb. Happily Chaney does this sort of story well. It moves quickly, doesn't really challenge and ends well with a satisfying ending. Fun stuff not to be taken too seriously.
Now that Alphonse is a constable in training, he has to study and learn from his peers, culminating in a mission to determine whether he can graduate to constable. Al and his mentor's mission is to capture Evelyn while she makes another bid to shift the neutronium they stole in the previous story. They pose as renegade and apprentice son and make contact with a renegade intermediary to find out more about Evelyn's latest ploy. Who is the mysterious Marcella? What happened to the previous renegade? How many crosses, double crosses, twists and traps will there be? Will the constable (and Tiro- constable in training) get their girl? An interesting tale with some action and plenty of intrigue.
Constable Malloy after being set up and arrested because of his unique abilities in lieu of jail has been offered and he accepted the job of a constable. He is now on an assignment that if successful will graduate from a trainee to a full fledged constable. His assignment to catch the female suspect who set him up. He is working with a seasoned and highly regarded constable on this assignment. Malloy is extremely analytical in his reasoning or deductions and he is learning to also utilize gut instincts along with his training , personal powers of deduction and his combat skills. This is an excellent read.Enjoyed immensely!
Alphonse Malloy has nearly completed his training as a Constable. He only has to complete a mission with his Vetus (mentor) to become a full fledged Constable. He has never forgotten the betrayal by Evelyn that caused the death of his friend and her brother and he is now given the chance to bring her to justice. As usual, J.N. Chaney gives us a rollicking, action filled adventure in which he shows that even Alphonse can get it wrong sometimes.
Alphonse has much to learn in his Constable training, and not all is taught by his mentor or the other trainers. His past catches up with him, and this teaches him more lessons: experiences that help to shape who we see in the Renegade Star series. We see a couple of faces from that series as well, which helps to put things in place for future events. I gently enjoyed the two books sharing Alphonse’s past.
The conclusion to Alphonse's journey to the constables. He is more world wise, but still not the interesting character from the Renegade Star series.
The book still lacks the charm and humor of the main series and while it is interesting, it is not as enjoyable. It is very much as the first book is, only with character growth.
I don't think I'll finish this series, as I don't like the lack of humor this series carries and I find the last character less interesting than Alphonse and Abby.
This one is something of a continuation of the previous Constable book. Alpha is about to graduate his training, all he has to do is complete on mission. For the most part, this book is similar to the last, with one exception. At key points in the book, I got a Mad Max Thunderdome vibe, as well as Mission Impossible, with a hint of Indian Jones or maybe Tomb Raider. Not sure if it was Chaney's intention to give out the vibe, but it was there.
This book has all the faults of the first book in the series, but none of the charm. It's a routine adventure story, with nothing much to recommend it, and the protagonist shows less of his unique abilities here than in the first book.
The plot is both scattered and lacks verisimilitude, and its ending is both abrupt and unsatisfying.
I've definitely read worse books, but there's little to recommend here.
Well you did it again lol another great storyline this one at a slightly faster pace than the Constable. Totally enjoyed the Constable Returns and am looking forward to seeing more of him in action as the constable.. In the Renegade series he seems to take a back seat so let's see more of him as the Constable
Can’t say this reader particularly enjoyed the journey of Alphonse Malloy from Tyro to Constable on the case that helps make that leap. Alphonse has quite the arc over the two books and here, he’s learning humanizing skills, to couple with his others. To this reader’s taste the pacing was too slow for anything to really make an impact. Rating: 3stars
Alphonse has spent a year training to be a constable and his final assignment brings him back into contact with the traitorous Evelyn. Lots of excitement and Alphonse learns a lot from his training officer during this mission.
I do like Al, he comes across as a mildly autistic Sherlock Holmes, that frightening intellect combined with an endearing social naivety. Another good story from JNC, well written with a good plot and engaging characters.
These two books she'd some seriously needed light on the character Alphonso Malloy! Not only do they put his personality and skillset in perspective, but the stories are quite good on their own. I definitely recommend both of these Constable books.
Alphonse and his mentor Darian go after Evelyn, who killed his friend Remi and sent her brother to jail. She thinks she has everything seen up, but Marcella gives her life to stop her.
Interesting resourceful characters. It wasn't always easy to know who the main characters could trust trust. I thought the epilogue opened the way for another book.
As always this was another great read of JN Chaney’s ongoing sagas. i recommend to all reading this to get on the band wagon , you won’t regret it!!!!!
