Art: 5/5
Story: 2.5/5

Serpieri is one of the all-time greats and every page of this is a visual feast. Exquisite, sexy, horrific.
The story is okay too.

Unfairly tagged with the unsavory and reductive nickname, “Master of the Ass,” Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri is an accomplished, creative, and both visually and narratively groundbreaking artist. It’s true enough that his most celebrated work was the Druuna series, which did include graphic sex, nudity, and a beautiful young female heroine. But the experience of falling into Druuna’s grim, violent, but still somehow beautifully realized world goes way beyond the body parts.

The fact that he studied both painting and architecture at the Fine Arts Academy in Rome is evident in Serpieri’s fully realized, if occasionally Escheresque cityscapes. He certainly seems to know not just how to design a building but what that building would look like once it’s started to fall apart, to decay and collapse from neglect. He started his comics career with westerns for Lanciostory in Italy but broke thorough with Morbus Gravis, the first Druuna story, published in an English translated version Heavy Metal here in the States in the Summer, 1986 issue (Volume 10, Number 2). If you weren’t there, it’s difficult to describe the impact of Heavy Metal magazine on the comics world when it emerged in America from its French predecessor Métal hurlant (Howling Metal) in April of 1977. This wasn’t the adolescent sex comedy of the “underground comics” of the day—this was serious (and also sometimes comical) science fiction and fantasy that attracted enormously talented artists like Moebius, Richard Corben, H.R. Giger, and Serpieri himself.

Serpieri’s often difficult and occasionally confrontational body of work combines elements of science fiction, body horror, erotica, and, believe it or not, romance. Though out of context panels would certainly indicate otherwise, Druuna doesn’t lead with her body, but with her heart. She appears in a decadent, savage, and overwhelmingly terrifying world as a beacon of humanity, and again, not just physically but emotionally. She is in many ways an “innocent” but also a fully realized woman who doesn’t always succeed in safely navigating the cruel and monstrous world she lives in, but always tries. She is not a damsel in distress, a princess to be rescued then possessed. If anything, Druuna is the exact opposite. The first three stories, at least, feature Druuna working to rescue and redeem two men who are important to her. She’s not a victim to be rescued but a heroine determined to rescue a male victim.

Through the Druuna stories, Serpieri’s art flashes with violence and erotica but is just as vibrant in the small, quiet moments that punctuate—and elevate—the stories. The world is rendered in exhaustive detail, the coloring is subtle and we see this hellscape world in what could almost be described as pastel colors.

Is it beautifully grotesque, or grotesquely beautiful?

Come on guys ...

The two volumes collected here take the story in a more pschedelic direction, with leaps in time and parts of the story taking place within dreams or a character's projected consciousness. Personally I prefer more straightforward story-telling as you're never quite sure what you're seeing, but the setting is as interesting as before and you do want to see what sort of sordid situation Druuna finds herself in next.

Fantastic artwork; a surreal, psychedelic tale, very 70s esque with its jumping from space ships and SF to ancient civilisations and unknown terrors, lurking at the edge of your vision .. quite Michael Moorcock in places in terms of vision, but all draws together nicely .. unfortunately part of the text is over-printed and in Spanish for about a dozen pages, but the story is followable ..

The art is simply stunning. There is no one that can draw the human body as well as Serpieri. This together with a complex sci-fi story joining beauty and horror makes a fantastic book. Highly recommended.

Fantastic artwork. Great story. I read parts of it in Heavy Metal Magazine in the late 70s or early 80s. It is nice to read the whole story. It is much better than the blase graphic novels of today.

Review van Druuna (volledige originele serie) - Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri
Rating hele serie: ⭐⭐⭐

Review of Druuna (entire original series) - Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri
Rating entire series: ⭐⭐⭐

This review covers the entire series.
Visually stunning, but narratively uneven

The Druuna comic series by Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri starts off strong with an intriguing science fiction story that sparks curiosity. The first two volumes, in particular, succeed in creating an immersive world filled with mysterious events and revelations, such as the discovery of a spaceship, laying a solid foundation. Unfortunately, the story loses its momentum after that, seemingly repeating itself without any real growth or direction, which causes the suspense and development to falter.

Outstanding artwork
What keeps this series afloat, however, is the phenomenal artwork. Druuna is beautifully rendered, as are the detailed and atmospheric environments. While there are sexual scenes, they are generally brief and well-integrated into the story, without becoming overpowering. This subtle balance of eroticism is surprisingly effective.

Wasted narrative potential
The themes and events initially hold a lot of potential, such as space colonization or discoveries, but instead remain stuck in repetition and lack a satisfying conclusion. As a result, the series feels more like a blend of films like The Matrix, Inception, and Alien—a combination that sounds promising but isn't fully realized.

A steady central figure
Druuna herself sees little character development, but this isn’t a significant issue; she serves as a steady anchor in a world that is constantly shifting. For fans of more complex narratives, this may present a challenge, but it’s the visual style that truly makes this series worth exploring.

Conclusion
In conclusion, Druuna is primarily recommended for its breathtaking artwork, while the story falls short of expectations. If you're willing to let the visual spectacle take center stage and accept the story as secondary, this series is absolutely worth a try.
