El 4 de marzo de 1970, un grupo de estudiantes universitarios presenciaban, desde el balcón de un hospedaje, a miembros de la Fuerza de Choque macanear injustamente en la calle a otro estudiante. Les gritaron "abusadores" y "asesinos". Uno de los policías desenfundó su revólver y disparó hacia el balcón, hiriendo a un estudiante y, con el mismo proyectil, asesinando a la estudiante Antonia Martínez. Hiram Sánchez Martínez, prestigioso jurista puertorriqueño devenido en reconocido escritor, ha puesto sus talentos jurídico y literario al servicio de un examen esclarecedor del antes, durante y después de aquella tragedia.

Great book about the unresolved death of this young woman who happens to be from my hometown Arecibo. Learned so much about what happened in those tumultuous years, and was not surprised that what happened then still occurs today - police brutality, cover ups and accusing innocent people for crimes they did not commit. It should be required reading for all Puertorricans.

Excelente recuento histórico del asesinato de la universitaria Antonia Martínez Lagares, los sucesos que lo precedieron y la impunidad que aún lo mantiene como una de las muchas heridas colectivas que sufre Puerto Rico. Aunque me confundieron bastante la terminología legal, creo que por fin entendí la diferencia entre las vistas preliminares. Creo. Quizás. También me hizo falta un índice para volver a buscar nombres, por ejemplo, de figuras que aparecen con frecuencia. El recuerdo tierno de una compañera buena le da un toque que conmueve. Pero, en lo personal, lo que más mantuvo mi atención fue la lucha estudiantil, su trasfondo, los conflictos dentro y fuera del ambiente universitario y, sobretodo, la impunidad en que quedó el caso. No discutiré más para no delatar detalles importantísimos del caso. Basta decir que este libro es lectura obligatoria para entender ese momento histórico. Y así comprender mejor el presente.

I was attracted to this book because I always heard about the protests at the UPR for my entire life, but didn’t know much about the details. My mom was at the university during those times. Sadly, my mom is not with us anymore to tell me more about it. This book is very unique because not only did the author live though the protests, but he was also good friends with the victim. He became an esteemed judge later on, which allowed him to also look at the case and the overall situation with an academic perspective as well. The book is very easy to read and he does a great job setting the scene and keeping the reader engaged. Extremely well researched.
