Depressed over a recent loss, Georgia is stuck in her remote cabin during a rain storm, with her dog Mulroy. Pots and pans litter the floor, to catch the drips that weep from the rafters while the constant drumming of rain sounds on the rooftop. The temperamental heater refuses to work, the fire in the hearth has all but gone out, and she out of firewood.

A trip to the shed for more fuel will solve the problem but the storm has turned the ground into a muddy bed of quicksand. And though it is a mere 50 feet away, Georgia can barely see the shed through the sheets of water battering the earth.

Should she chance it? If anything should happen there will be no one to help her.

Throwing off her doubts, she tosses on a slicker, leashes up Mulroy and sets off for the shed. Having no idea how wrong a short trip to the shed can go. Will she surrender to the wrath of nature or are there forces at work that can save her if she lets them?

A very quick and moving story about a women who must test her inner self when a simple task goes horribly wrong. She has help from two sources that I won't mention. You need to read this story to find out. Bring a Kleenex to wipe you eyes when you are finished. as usual great reading Anita.

I am a huge fan of Mulroy. He is the hero in the story as far as I am concerned.
The struggle to go on after losing a child is one I can embrace and identify with.
This was a hard story for me to read but nevertheless I am glad I did.

The rain beats down relentlessly in this short story by Anita Rodgers, and this rain sets the mood throughout. Ms. Rodgers' descriptions of the soggy, muddy, smothering morning are so stark, so visual and tactile that the reader can almost feel boots bogging down in the earth as one tries to go from one page to the next. "Rain" is the story of a woman grieving, and of the pivotal moment in which she must decide--is she going to give into her suffocating grief or learn to live again? A riveting short story from an author who has written novel-length mysteries and thrillers, as well.
