David Stephen (1911 - 1989) was a Scottish naturalist, author and journalist. In 1947 he became nature writer with the Daily Record, then nine years later moved to The Scotsman, where worked for a number of years. He was the first director of Palacerigg Country Park, near Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire.
A lovely short read during a short travel stint about the British Red Squirrel, whose numbers have been declining thanks to the American Gray Squirrel. The illustrations by Marjorie Blamey are why I purchased this book in the first place- as I collect her works. She is a favourite female nature artist along with Marianne North. I hope there are more in circulation as I think they make lovely and informative children's books, not to mention beautiful art. If you want to read it for free check out Archive.org
