Sixteen-year-old Jack’s life is transformed when he accidentally falls from a hotel roof and doesn’t die. He discovers he has mind-body control, or MBC for short. At signs of danger, he can order his body to turn into marble, steel or whatever he needs.

His friends call him a superhero but Jack isn’t sure he wants to be one. Using MBC gives him head-splitting migraines. When MBC is on, his emotions turn off and may never turn back on again. He could become a catatonic zombie, but how can he say no to rescuing people from certain deaths?

Jack makes a serious mistake and a man dies. MBC’s side effects become sinister, pushing him into periods of depression and violence. Will Jack figure out how to deal with MBC and use it on his own terms, or will it turn him into an unrecognizable monster?

Excerpts from Mind Body A Novel

He latched onto the thought. And something strange happened. Energy coursed through his body making it seem lighter. Air flowed into his lungs in a cool, sweet stream.

She straightened. “Listen up. Fighting is about using anything and everything at your disposal to win.”

Pressed beyond endurance, rage exploded in Jack. His unleashed yell shook the trees. Bright red energy, a furious marauding dragon, crashed through his body. His broken bones crackled with electricity. His torn muscles clenched with heat. His tendons knitted, a strange sore sensation.

Jack had never felt such pain. It drove him deep within himself searching for sanctuary. The monster chased him, ripping through his mind, cruelly pinching his pain centers until he writhed in agony.

“Mind like monkey,” Teacher intoned. “Monkey jump, touch monkey, be still. Monkey run, catch monkey, bring back. Remind monkey, monkey quiet, monkey peace. You do. Meditate.”

Holding the scabbard horizontal, Teacher pulled out a sword. Metal glided hissing on wood. The blade was wide, its polished steel reflecting light like water. Hieroglyphics etched a line down its middle leading the eye to its lethal tip. An ancient weapon, it emanated power and whispered the legends of its wielders.
The deadly sword swung up then down hanging an inch over Jack’s bare right shoulder. “You are steel,” said Teacher. “Sword not hurt you. Visualize.”

Her eyes flashed to his. He drowned in the cool sapphire depths. She seemed to read him too, her focus an arrow lancing straight to his stomach.

Jack saw the muzzle flashes. His mind froze. Seemingly in slow motion, the bullets jetted to him in a triangle formation. He heard his heart beat once, twice, and then colors, lights, sounds flooded his brain again. Digging deep, he grabbed onto a sliver of clarity and expanded it. “I am alloy. They are alloy. Their energy is my energy.”
