Surviving the blast is only the beginning...

Following a catastrophic nuclear attack which targeted 13 major cities, millions are wiped out in an instant while others are left to deal with the after effects of radiation poisoning. Troubled teen, Dakota Sloane has been working in a bar in Miami, trying to save enough money to get her younger sister Eden, out of foster care. Two years ago, they escaped the Everglades from a cult called the Shepherds of Mercy, which is run by the fanatic Solomon Cage. Dakota has changed her name and stayed incognito since.

Minutes before the attack, Dakota spots Maddox Cage, the cult leader’s son, getting into a taxi through her bar window. Realising he’s tracked down Eden’s whereabouts, Dakota decides to up her plans to leave with Eden sooner than she had anticipated. As different cities come under attack on the news bulletin, Dakota comes to a horrifying realisation and is able to text Eden seconds before a blinding light flashes and Miami also succumbs to an attack.

Following the blast, Dakota and a few survivors from the bar seek refuge in a movie theatre as they wait for the radiation levels to drop. The survivors include Julio, the bar owner, Shay who has some medical experience and Logan Garcia, a loner, haunted by his past who seeks solace in a bottle.

Forty eight hours later, Dakota’s anxiety for Eden has worsened as she suspects that Maddox may have survived and will possibly head out for her sister. Sensing that he can handle himself with a gun, she makes a deal with Logan; access to a secure safe haven deep in the Everglades in return for accompanying her while she rescues her sister. Logan agrees. With Julio and Shay also insisting on going her, the group set out on a journey through wasteland that is fraught with danger not only from radiation but from aspects of humanity itself. Will Eden save her sister in time?

This boxset consists of the first three books in what has so far been a tense and exciting post apocalyptic survival series. Each instalment is told from four points of view; Dakota, Eden, Logan and Maddox. From the offset, I found myself totally immersed in the premise of the story. The impact on survivors from a nuclear explosion where knowledge and survival skills could be the only thing standing between life and death? Luckily our group has Dakota, who thanks to her mentor Ezra, has been taught survivalist skills.

The strength of the book lies in the fascinating world building that the author has managed to create. It’s apparent throughout that the author has done a lot of research which sets it apart from other novels of similar themes.

The characters were quickly introduced, developed and understood. Dakota, Eden and Logan are troubled protagonists, each with a dark past which is only hinted at in this instalment. We learn that Dakota and Eden were sent to a religious compound by their Aunt, following the death of their parents. They escaped and sought refuge with Ezra, a hermit who lived in the Everglades. While Dakota is tough, resilient and a survivor mainly because she’s HAD to be, Logan chooses to drown his demons in a bottle. Eden, despite being alone and hearing impaired, handles her situation admirably for a fourteen year old. Her faith in her sister, unshakable. The secondary characters were equally appealing. Julio and Shay came across as decent, caring people. Unfortunately when society breaks down, it brings out the worst of humanity too and I suspect this will become a regular occurrence now that our group has decided to venture out into the open.

All in all this was an intriguing well executed, gritty, realistic and fast paced box set with an ending that will ensure any reader will want to pick up the next instalment.

Trigger warnings, religious cult, patriarchal societies, physical and mental abuse, child marriages, torture, gang related violence.

Nuclear Dawn Box Set Books 1-3 - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Point of Impact
Kyla Stone really sets the story of a sudden overwhelming nuclear attack in the USA well, and tells how, following the deaths of their parents, young sisters Dakota and Eden Sloane are put into care by their well-meaning aunt. Even though Dakota, the elder of the siblings makes her escape and has vowed to return to rescue her sister, we learn from the well-developed plot that she has to make good on her promise to Eden sooner than expected, as the major part of Miami is now devastated. I really liked the way street-wise, feisty Dakota doesn't panic at her sudden change of circumstances, but realises she must act swiftly.
She'll have to rescue Eden and get them both to safety with her former mentor, (who taught her survivalist and woodcraft skills and has a safe house called Haven), where they can be a family once more. I also liked the way the author ramped up the tension, as the reader learns, (but Dakota is unaware) that a predator from her past is hunting her - with nefarious intent. The suspense was further heightened when someone she turned to for help had his own issues to deal with and I found this very exciting and engaging.

Fear the Fallout
Dakota has to overcome unbelievably harsh and deadly events and is reluctantly forced to join forces with Logan, a truck driver she meets by chance. How will things end? Can America rise phoenix-like from the ashes of destruction to become strong and united again?

From the Ashes
Eden's brother (and the Prophet's nephew), Maddox - member of the Shepherds, who act as enforcers for Cage - is pursuing her, in order to return Eden to the Prophet. The resistance group, led by Dakota, is making its way to her old mentor Ezra's safe house...will they all make it?

An incredible value-for-money box set, from Queen of the Apocalypse, Kyla Stone, that will set your pulse racing, Nuclear Dawn contains Book 1, Point of Impact, followed by Fear the Fallout and From the Ashes. I really loved them all and I'm sure you will too - get this box set today!

Summary:

Dakota has one and only one goal to find and take her sister to safety the only thing standing in her way is a world gone mad after a nuclear bomb detonated. There is no protection beyond what you can do for yourself. Without police or any form of government, survival of the fittest is the only law and order. Dakota, Logan and the others begin a dangerous treck to find Dakota’s sister Eden placing in danger form fallout and anyone determined to take power.

It was both terrifying and inspirational to see how different individuals react and change when they experience a life altering change In their lives. Dakota understood what was happening and what to do, but even she had some things to learn. Logan and the others were willing to follow Dakota and their help was needed as they encountered groups determined to stop them. Eden is on her own trying to stay safe as she waits for Dakota who she knows is coming for her while Maddox, a member of the cult they escaped from, is on his way to get Eden. He knows that once he finds Eden Dakota is not far away.

This was an incredible struggle for survival against seemingly impossible odds.

Brilliantly Composed with Phenomenal Narration (5+ Stars)

Nuclear Dawn is a cleverly written post-apocalyptic series. Kyla Stone has composed a brilliantly descriptive, informative, and fascinating tale about surviving a nuclear attack and the subsequent fallout. She takes the readers/listeners on a harrowing and yet exciting journey. The storyline is intense, suspenseful, adventurous, and utterly compelling. I was thoroughly absorbed and invested in the outcome as the survivors' traversed the devastated radioactive ruins.

The two primary characters are complex, guarded, multilayered with depth, and haunted by personal demons. The supporting characters are as well-developed and intriguing with unique traits and dispositions. From the very start of the book, I was wholly captivated by Dakota Stone and Logan. Dakota, the heroine is intelligent, resourceful, resilient, driven, and a natural leader. As defined by Logan, "there was something broken in her, but with strength like steel." As for Logan, he is enigmatic, smart, tough, and a fighter. However, he is not your typical hero, he is flawed and haunted by guilt, stemmed from a mysterious past.

As for the antagonists, there are two groups. In the second installment, more about them and their motivations are revealed. The audience can link clues or draw parallels to certain events to determine answers to questions. Tidbits of information are also unveiled as the narrative shifts to the significant events in Dakota's past. Personally, I like this approach, the author creates the element of mystery.

Kyla Stone has cleverly combined essential ingredients to produce an exceptional post-apocalyptic series. As an enthusiast, I've listened and read various authors and can confidently say that this is an excellent addition to the genre. Furthermore, I found her writing to flow naturally and not forced, particularly the dialogue.

The narration by Stacey Glemboski is outstanding. She hones on the characters' personalities, projecting their moods and emotions, bringing them to life. I thoroughly enjoyed her performance, further immersing me into the story. The author and narrator make an excellent team. I can't wait to hear the rest of the series!

Six months ago I posted a review for volume one of this series; “Point of Impact”. Recently, I acquired the box set of volumes one through three. Read my review for volume one here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show.... Volume two; “Fear the Fallout” follows Dakota, Logan, Julio, and Shae as they cross the devastated countryside to find Dakota’s sister Eden. Via Dakota’s memories, we get all the background of Dakota’s and Eden’s time with Ezra after their escape from the River Grass compound. Dakota continues to be the tough, street-wise leader of her small crew. Survivors reeling from shock, hunger, thirst, and radiation sickness are more of a threat than the fallout itself. Logan has demons of his own to wrestle with. Dakota also has a terror from her recent past stalking her; Maddox. Volume three; “From the Ashes” continues the intense tale of rescue and survival. Now that Dakota has found Eden, it’s time to get out of Dodge and the radiation hot zone. There is still one problem waiting in the wings; Maddox. The confusing, surprising story behind Maddox is revealed. Dakota and crew must try to resolve the problem called Maddox. If that can be accomplished, the plan is to head back to Ezra’s cabin and the safety of the Everglades. They’ve already been exposed to the radiation far longer than anticipated. Will they, can they escape? I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I had read book 1 and and No Safe Haven , along with the Last Sanctuary series. I really enjoy the strong teenage female characters in a dystopian setting. This series has the very real threat of home grown religious terrorists and radiation contamination. I really look forward to reading the follow up books about Dakota and Eden! The other characters of Ezraz Logan, Shay

, Park and Julio add to the intense fight for survival. The portrayal of a decimated Miami is so realistic too.

WOW!!!!!!!

The three books in The Nuclear Dawn Box Set will give the reader an adrenaline rush, to say the least. This series is filled with action, adventure, and mystery. Dakota, Logan, Julio, Park, and Eden are in for quite a ride as nuclear devices are detonated across certain cities in America. So much is going on in the novels that the reader can definitely believe that these situations can be plausible but like a train wreck in motion. Survival is important in this scenario, let's believe that this is fiction and not what may come to past.

Great set of books!

I enjoyed these 3 books. It's hard to envision such an event actually happening. It is however, a real possibility in the troubled world in which we live. We all need to think about how best to prepare for such events and be ready. You never know what today and all the days to follow, will bring.

Outstanding series and your showing that the survivors are capable of making sure they are going to survive. I had a feeling that the cult was behind the bombs.

I really enjoyed these books, which were very interesting and full of information that I imagine a lot of people will be fascinated by! The story was great, and the author managed to weave a great back story into it without detracting from the pace of the action.
The characters are well developed, and there are plenty of surprises in the plot to keep us on the edges of our seats. The author, without giving us a cliffhanger, sets things up so that we know more trouble is going to find our friends in the next book. A fascinating story that is full of information and excitement!

Despite this being a box set of 3 books, it's still an incomplete story ending in a cliffhanger. Furthermore, this story simply crawled at times. These 3 books could have been edited down into a single book. Although fairly contrived, the story is plausible and the characters are compelling.

Stacey Glemboski delivers an excellent performance. She gives distinctive voices to the characters and paces her narration well. I hope to have the opportunity to review the rest of the story.
