Dark Stars #2

Twisted Fates

Rate this book
One past. Two girls. Infinite futures.

As far as anyone in New Seattle knows, Dorothy has disappeared. The stowaway from 1913, the girl that Ash maybe—possibly—could’ve loved: she’s gone. And in her place is bloodthirsty Quinn Fox, silver-haired and vicious. But even though he saw her fall through the anil on their last ill-fated mission through time, Ash can’t stop himself from looking for Dorothy around every dark corner. What he doesn’t know, though, is that the girl he fell in love with is the very same one who is fated to kill him.

As Ash and his friends grow increasingly desperate searching for a way to head off the devastating earthquake threatening to tear down New Seattle for good, Quinn and Roman are working to take down mob boss Mac Murphy, who is attempting to use them to control time travel for his own selfish purposes. When they collide, can they change the course of the future entirely?

So I just finished rereading this so I can finally read the third book and fingers crossed to finally getting some answers about that insane plot twist at the end of book two.

So... speechless.

I’m not even entirely sure how to rate this book. I LOVED the first book and I would have enjoyed the second one just as much if the ending didn’t leave me so... confused. Not sure if it is in a good way or not. It is going to be painful to wait for the next book, that is for sure.

"How do you frighten frightening people? You become frightening yourself."

Twisted Fates was a book that I needed right after I finished reading Stolen Time. The ending to the first book shocked me and this one ended the same way. I devoured both of these books and I’m bloodthirsty for more.

These adventurous time travelers are back and they’re raising all kinds of hell. Not only do deathly fates come true but they see the future and it shocks them to their core.

The Dark Stars series is my absolute favorite in this genre. They just keep getting better and better. Even though we find out who Quinn really is, you’re hooked into seeing all the evil things she comes up with next. It was maddening, stunning, and totally phenomenal.

Twisted Fates was amazing. I can’t get over at how hooked I became with these books. I felt like a wolf hunting for blood and I couldn’t get enough. Now I’m impatiently waiting for book three.

These cliff hangers ARE GONNA KILL ME.

But like, in a good way. I want it to kill me. In fact, my pre-memory is about being killed by a cliff-hanger so yeah...

Loved the first book and devoured this one. Although, I am extremely confused about the ending. My only complaint about this story is that I wish there were more fans so I could talk with them and theorize about what the heck is going on!!! I feel a little dumb lol but I’m just wanting moooore! Can’t wait till book 3!

Ever since I read the first book, which was included in the Book Box Club, I was already really looking forward to the second book. There were so many questions unanswered and there were so many unexpected twists and turns. I just HAD to know where this would all go, how this would end, where this would lead.

I will start with the bad news: Although this book does give a few answers, it comes with loads and loads more questions, a few very surprising reveals and even more twists and turns. But I guess that's also the good news. This book is just as exciting and mind blowing as the first book in this series was and after the few revelations at the end I am even more looking forward to the next book.

Sci-Fi is a hard genre to write, but Rollins really has it down. It never gets too complicated or scientific, but she did create a solid base for everything that's happening. Therefore the book never feels unhinged, or unrealistic. Of course, the dystopia is only one of the many possible scenario's and a lot of this is currently just theoretic talking, but it feels scientificly right anyway. It feels like there are rules and those rules are being followed, although a little stretched at times.

However, the true stars of this book, no matter how awesome the science, the mystery and the revelations are, are the characters. I love Dorothy and Ash, together, but also apart. Although their romance is certainly a big part of the story, it's not everything. They are two separate characters with their own stories and backgrounds and motives and chances. And although they cross paths a lot of times, their characters don't depend on each other, something I truly enjoy.

And now I will count down the days until the next book comes out. I hope it will be in 2021!

I have made a huge mistake: I thought it was a duology and could not understand why the plot was getting thicker and thicker at the end instead of giving me answers I was dying for. ⠀
Ha! The answer is bitter-sweet: yey, I will get one more of these amazing books (it should be way more popular, I do not understand why it is not, honestly. Beautiful covers of truly great books, c'mon people!). But there is the bitter part, too: I have to wait for the final book (wait, I hope I am assuming it right and it is a trilogy!) and all I want is to know: will they figure the time-travel and the consequences it gives? Will Dorothy get her happy ending? Will Ash be able to change his future? I have already reviewed the first book: Stolen Time if you want to find out how the journey starts. But make no mistake: Twisted Fates is equally good and it deserves so much more attention. If you like YA, time-travelling, great plot-twists (or all of the above) this is a book for you!⠀

Jesus these books love painful cliffhangers. I truly adored this book almost as much as the first one. Ash and Dorothy have my heart. (Impressive with a het pairing.)

The only negative thing I have to say is that I wish we got more Chandra, Willis, and Zora.

I need Dark Stars NOW. How am I supposed to wait until March??

"She'd been lost in time and Ash didn't know where to begin looking for her."

The crew at the CPA still hasn't worked out time travel never works out, but does that stop them trying to change the past, the future, the present? Change the future? How does that work, it hasn't happened yet...

And that ending is not allowed in any shape or form. I guess book 3 is right there for me to read, but I have 50 mill other books lined up before it. If only I had a time machine.

*gasps* there had better be another book! I like Dorothy so much more in this book. She became an actual character and not just some lovesick puppy with a background in cons. The full cast was just far more interesting to follow and I loved the conflicts we run into with trying to change events with time travel.

"How do you frighten frightening people? Easy. You become frightening yourself."

I am completely lost for words. This book was fantastic.

In the second installment of the Dark Stars Trilogy, we get to know Dorothy and her motives more, and follow her journey as she builds her identity throughout the book.

Furthermore, the reader delves deeper into the other characters' pasts, and grasp the complicated concept of time travel more, as well as unravel its cryptic mysteries.

I absolutely love the concept of time travel, it makes the story so much more complex and unpredictable, which I adore. In this universe, with time travel, anything is possible.

This book had so many mysteries and secrets upon secrets being unraveled. Time travel made it so much more mysterious and there were so many unexpected plot twists that I absolutely did NOT see coming.

That ending- I don't even know what I just read. The plot thickened so much towards the end and I cannot wait to get my hands on the final book!

This book was excellently executed, and I loved the plot twists, mysteries, romance and time travel!

Epic book. Can't wait for more.

This volume was a real disappointment compared to the first book. I felt like I read a book in an entirely different series.

My main problem was that I can no longer recognize Dorothy. Somehow, in the space of a year, she has become a villain. And I simply cannot understand why. Why does she not want to reach back out to Ash and the gang? Why? WHY? That is the trigger to her sticking with the Black Circus, for leading them, and for, apparently, being sympathetic to Roman's plot (which, hey, isn't really a bad plot, is it? Since he wants to help people before the quake and also, ultimately, .) But I still don't understand why. She isn't mad at Ash. She doesn't disbelieve in whatever they were doing. So why? There is no reason for her to be a villain. (honestly, we never see any of the Black Circus doing villainous things - so why were they so feared in the first book? Again, I feel like I'm reading a different book)

The introduction of Mac as the new villain was really eye-rolling. Ho boy, a dirty, ruthless, money-hungry pimp as the villain. Never heard of that one. I'm quaking in my quarantined living room.

I missed our other characters, who conveniently fell away from most of the narrative. I did enjoy more insight to the professor's diary and explanation of time travel. And, admittedly, I was intrigued by the climax at the end of the novel. It's enough for me to want to finish the series. But I do hope the final book is better than this one was.

"In a love story, there’s always a moment near the end of the movie when the protagonist has to make a choice. Either she does the easy thing and life continues as usual, or she does the hard thing and everything changes. She faces her fears and winds up with everything she ever wanted."

EXCUSE ME?!?!?!?! My goodness the last like quarter of the book was so painful for my heart and once again the twists have me gobsmacked. I need to know how it ends. I'm again thankful that the entire trilogy is already published so that I don't have to wait after these cliffhangers!
"How do you stop a memory?"
This is the second book in a trilogy with a lot going on that builds off of the events in the first book, so this review will be rather brief and will focus on how it made me feel: anxious! terrified! on the edge of my seat! yearning! aching! Sadly the side characters fell by the wayside in this book. I wish that Willis, Zora, and Chandra were a bit more present in the book as I missed their found family vibes.
"They'd been friends before they were enemies. It was so easy to forget that, after everything that had happened."
Fate and free will are an even more central theme in this installment, as well as the consequences of time travel. The worldbuilding is clear and vibrant, the science plausible and logical. I'll admit that the first third of the book felt a little repetitive (yearning, brief recall of things I just read yesterday in book 1) but with the quick pace the narrative didn't suffer too much.

**3.5 stars but rounded up to a 4 due to the ending chapters**
What the crap just happened?! I have a theory that I'm pretty sure is true but how are things going to end?? I liked how twisty things got and I can't wait for the final book. While the first half was a bit dry, this is still a good and underrated series for YA sci-fi. I liked the first book more, since I thought the pacing was better and the characters felt more layered and richer, but still a good sequel with major questions/cliffhanger to go for the last book.

Holy cow!!! This book was amazing and picked up where we left off with the first and gave a lot of good answers. Sometimes I find the middle book in trilogies as a weak bridge where authors are trying to drag out the story, so not the case here. This book gave us a lot of good answers and that ending opened up a whole mess of questions! I am excited to move onto the next novel!
