Hell on the Range

Rate this book
Chuck Whelan, one of the top line operators working out of the Marshal’s office, is assigned to a mission in West Kansas. The government is giving up some of its land to farmers, and those farmers who win the local land-race, will be the one who get to choose the best land available, and lay their stake.

Knowing that Cy Tropman owns a lot of the land on the neighbouring Sweet Springs is of concern to the Federal Marshal’s office. They suspect he will go for the majority of land and not through following the law. Chuck Whelan is the only hope the farmers will get of laying claim to land fairly.

Whelan’s arrival in Sweet Springs is not different to his expectations. Trouble is rife and his welcome is highlighted by the beating up of a farmer by a hardcase who works for Tropman. Helping the farmer immediately places Whelan in Tropman’s spotlight.

As the race nears and Whelan’s familiarity with the town grows, he knows the farmers will have a hard time claiming land that would suit their needs. With children and women in tow, they stand even less of a chance. The farmers don’t have the law on their side … Whelan is their only hope. Can he help them stay alive long enough for them to claim some land that would be rightfully theirs?

Chuck Mason is one of many pseudonyms for Donald S. Rowland, a British author born in Norfolk, England. His previous roles include film projectionist and Senior Clerk and Local Government Officer. He began his full-time writing career in 1964, starting with science-fiction before moving on to Westerns.
