Reading this book has caused me to reflect on different times and experiences in my own life. Have you ever been in a tough situation where you were no longer in control and your efforts couldn’t possibly make things better? I know I have. Perhaps I was allowed to have those experiences so that Jesus could show up and do something unexplainable. He did show up, more than once. He did do something unexplainable, more than once. And, I will be forever grateful. As you read through this book and study the book of Luke, you will learn about or be reminded of times that Jesus showed up and did some rather unexplainable things.
There are many wonderful thoughts and lessons throughout this book. One of my favorites is centered around the word unexpected. As we expect the unexpected from God, that will open us up to doing the unexpected for those around us. If we busy ourselves with expecting and doing the unexpected, we will have less time for passing judgement and being critical.
I thoroughly enjoyed this Bible Study as I read through the book of Luke.
A thoughtful and inspired book focusing on Luke in the New Testament challenges readers to discover Jesus in depth through the eyes and words of Luke. Luke as a physician adds details and descriptions other writers in the NT overlook. When his work is compared with the gospels of Matthew, Luke, and John, the reader can find details of Jesus' ministry arranged chronologically. And as a non Jew, Matthew writes for a gentile audience. I learned so much about our Savior by reading Luke and comparing his writing with that of John, Matthew, and Luke.
I have been waiting a loooong time for Erica Wiggenhorn’s new release from Moody Publishers - and at last it is here! “Unexplainable Jesus: Rediscovering the God You Thought You Knew - An 8-Week Bible Study of Luke” is a powerful, 40-lesson study that challenges us to “step into the streets of Jerusalem and encounter the Jewish Rabbi who turned the world upside down.”
As with most of the Moody Bible Studies for Women that I’ve completed, this book dives deep into Scripture, challenging readers to uncover God’s truths for themselves using in-depth questions and study tools. The unique and beautiful part about this book in particular is the focus is on Jesus, our relationship with Him, and our response to the question He posed not only to Peter, but also to each one of us: “Come, follow Me!”
Starting at the beginning of Luke and working our way through the book, we concentrate, cross-reference, and look deeper at the Scriptures with which we are so familiar - perhaps sometimes too familiar. Erica invites us to journey with her as, through fresh eyes, we study Jesus and His: Unexplainable Beginnings; Unexplainable Birth; Unexplainable Introductions; Unexplainable Teaching; Unexplainable Kingdom; Unexplainable Invitations; Unexplainable Confrontations; and Unexplainable Rescue.
In case you are wondering at the format of each day of this book, it is not simply a workbook with a daily Scripture selection to read and questions to answer afterwards. No, it is more like a profound visit with Erica as she pours her heart and soul into each daily reading, inviting us to seek Unexplainable Jesus for ourselves. A combination of personal experiences and carefully researched Biblical insights, Erica’s words invite deep inner thought-processing while still being warm and relatable, as though we are sitting next to each other in a close-knit Bible study class.
I honestly cannot say enough good things about Erica Wiggenhorn’s Bible Studies, and “Unexplainable Jesus” is her best yet. Even though I am only a few weeks into the study, the insight I am gaining is profound - and my relationship with my Savior is deepening. So thank you, Erica, for another Bible study that is life-changing. May God use this book to changes the lives of all who read it in ‘Unexplainable’ ways!
I received this book courtesy of Moody Publishers, as part of a launch team initiative. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I am always eager to have the chance to review a devotional or a Bible study guide and I can't begin to describe my appreciation of Unexplainable Jesus, a new 8-week Bible study of the New Testament book Luke. Rediscovering the God You Thought You Knew is the subtitle and author Erica Wiggenhorn shares eight "unexplainable topics" to help us understand the true Jesus. The eight chapters of this book are titled Unexplainable Beginnings, Unexplainable Birth, Unexplainable Introductions, Unexplainable Teaching, An Unexplainable Kingdom, Unexplainable Invitations, Unexplainable Confrontations, and An Unexplainable Rescue and they thoroughly cover the 48 chapters of Luke and part of Acts 1. Each book chapter has scripture for reading, commentary that teaches, and questions to answer. I especially like that the book layout offers space to answer the questions and a place to record my personal thoughts!
When I started this study, I was especially impressed with a section in Week 2, Day 2. It mentioned that Jesus's mother Mary tried to store up all of the memories of Jesus' birth and the events that followed it. I learned that the Greek word syntero means 'treasured up' and I loved this observation from the author. 'Together we will treasure and ponder who this Unexplainable Jesus is and in the midst of a life that often wounds us, may we discover the wonder of all that He is.' This is what I long to do----I want to syntero all of the wonder that He is! And even though I haven't finished this study, I have already learned so much about Jesus the man and Jesus our Savior!
Erica Wiggenhorn has written a wonderful resource and I recommend Unexplainable Jesus: Rediscovering the God You Thought You Knew to anyone wanting to learn more about God, our Heavenly Father, who chose to send His Son as the human man known as Jesus.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and Moody Publishers and this is my honest review.

In truth, while studying God's immeasurable Word, all you need is your Bible. But I enjoy doing Bible studies along with it. For me, those studies help me dig deeper & see other perspectives in the Scripture that I may never had learned before.
"How beautiful that God in the flesh made His dwelling among the craftsman instead of the religious elite." - Unexplainable Jesus, Erica Wiggenhorn -
This study by Erica Wiggenhorn is no exception. She takes you to the cultural origins of the Jewish people, the times they lived in, and how the culture & beliefs systems worked. It was soooo very interesting, and added all-knew perspective to the gospel of Luke and how Jesus taught His disciples & those listening in. It brought a deeper understanding of the Scriptures, and certainly got my mind thinking in different ways.
For instance, in the parables Jesus taught to the people, He often seemed to speak in riddles or bring to their minds a radial way of thinking. That was because over the generations, they had been taught laws & traditions that had slowly fallen away from the original purposes. He used radical analogies & stories to point this out, and bring about a different, open-minded way of thinking for those willing to listen.
"In any place & every place where the stench of judgment & death threatens to overtake you, remember Christ's promise: 'Didn't I tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?'" (in reference to John 11:40)
All in all, I would highly recommend this study if you would like to delve more deeply into Jesus' teachings. Better yet, make it a group study! There's some really great questions included for discussion as well as some looking more clearly into your own life as an individual before a holy God.
"Could it be that when Jesus asks us to exercise faith before He step in & works, He is asking us to remember the greatness of God in whom our faith lies?" - Unexplainable Jesus -
Bible study is not meant to be a task to complete. Instead, it is an avenue for building relationship with God.
A bible study thru the book of Luke, we are on a journey of rediscovering who Jesus is. The book of Luke is significant because of Luke's background. As a doctor, his perception the same as the other Gospels has a depth of heart issues that the others do not. As a doctor, Luke studies the human condition physically and mentally. I am not sure if this is why the author honed in the book of Luke instead of the others but I found the text did focus on what is in the heart. Our motivations, desires, etc. and what is in the heart and what Jesus taught can be simply unexplainable.
The book of Luke examines the prophecy of Jesus, his birth, his youth and ministry. His ministry with teaching thru parables and why the heart is hostile towards the things of God. Jesus does the unexplainable when he gets hold of your heart and mine and changes it to desire the things of God instead of the desires of self.
Some of the unexplainable questions and statements found in this study are... How does the church become an unexplainable place infused with the love of Christ. Jesus miracles were performed to support his claims but the unexplainable happens when we are drawn to him in a quest of not what we receive but WHO we get!
It is important how we approach Christ. We receive so much more when our approach is in Worship of who he truly he is. Highly recommend.
A Special Thank you to Moody Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
This is a good study of the majority of the gospel of Luke. Wiggenhorn has done lots of research and adds supplementary historical and cultural information throughout the study. There are a few journeys into the Greek text but not many. The writing style is pleasant to read and this would make a good study for someone wanting to study the life of Jesus as shown through Luke, whether for the first time or as a reacquainting experience. Wiggenhorn provides many opportunities to relate the information in the gospel to everyday life.
Unfortunately, some passages of Luke are not covered. Luke 12:49-59 is an example. There, Jesus talked about bringing division, a topic Wiggenhorn did not cover. The last half of Luke chapter 11 is also ignored. Potential Bible study leaders should know which passages are ignored and be prepared to answers questions on those passages from their own independent research.
Each of the 40 lessons (8 weeks) is designed to take about twenty to thirty minutes to complete. It begins with a Bible passage and a theme title. Questions help readers contemplate the Scripture verses and apply the principles to life. Space is given for drawing or otherwise responding to time spent in relationship with God. Some of the questions are also suitable for group discussion and additional free resources are available at a website given in the text.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
"unexplainable Jesus" is an 8-week Bible study by Erica Wiggenhorn on the book of Luke. Are you ready to be captivated by Jesus? I can't say enough good things about the Bible studies Moody Publishers publishes.
One thing I enjoy about Wiggenhorn's studies (as well as most of the studies offered by Moody) is how she encourages you to find answers for yourself. She doesn't spend a lot of time filling in the gaps for you, but she insists that you do the digging. I always learn so much from searching the Scriptures and my soul for myself.
Her study on Luke features 40 in-depth lessons, historical and cultural insights, soul-searching questions and access to extensive online resources. Discover the Jewish Rabbi who turned the world upside down and allow Him to rearrange your world as you study this new Bible study from Wiggenhorn and Moody Publishers.

This is an eight week Bible study of Luke. Each week started with an introduction and then five days of working through the verses. Each day covered a new chunk of verses, and she slowly worked through all of Luke. Each day started with the Bible reading and a lot of commentary about the verses, including cultural background and word studies. She included some questions about what you read which help bring out important points. She provided commentary about the answers to the questions after asking them, so you have some idea of the answer she was looking for and why they were important. She also had several personal application questions at the end as well as a summary of what we learned. I felt like she did an excellent job of bringing out insights from the text to help the reader to better understand what was going on. Overall, I'd recommend this excellent Bible study to individuals, though I think it could also be adapted to be used as a group study.
I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through Amazon Vine.
When it comes to DVD and book Bible studies, the teaching and speaking combination has to be just right. The Study needs to be well researched and written, with enough interest to keep the student moving forward. The DVD teaching needs to be engaging (and a little humour) and with great insights into profound Biblical teaching. Erica Wiggenhorn in UNEXPLAINABLE JESUS has nailed it on all aspects. My church, Trinity Church Kelowna, has over 200 women immersed in this study and we are loving it. The women love the weekly homework and especially enjoy Erica’s teaching style. She is well informed, has done her research, adds some humour and drives home important Biblical truths. I highly recommend this Study for every church in North America and abroad. This Study gets us back into the word and life of the One we confess to be in relationship with: Jesus Christ. Well done Erica!
Unexplainable Jesus: Rediscovering the God You Thought You Knew is a study of the Biblical book of Luke. Wiggenhorn relates the historical prophecies of the Savior to come, and shows us how Jesus fulfilled those prophecies, though in a totally unexpected and radical way. Jesus was not the type of Messiah the Jews expected or hoped for, and yet was better than they ever could have imagined.
Luke's determination to write a historical record of Jesus' life, death and beyond coupled with Wiggenhorn's ability to enlighten the reader about the culture of the time makes for a good and enlightening read.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Moody Publishers for allowing me to read an ARC of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

Unexplainable Jesus is an eight week/40 lesson Bible Study that prompts you to slow down and ponder the Scriptures regarding the life of Jesus and how it applies to our real-life situations.
If you are looking to build a stronger relationship with God – or are seeking to know more about this man, Jesus, I would highly recommend this book. Written in an easy to understand format, the author provides probing questions and additional materials that will encourage and enrich your spiritual journey.
I received an advanced copy from Moody Publishers Women as a part of the early book launch team.
I know that God doesn't change and the Bible doesn't, but I love how author Erica Wiggenhorn helped me to see things that I have glossed over in previous readings of scripture. I appreciate how this study is a balance between asking my personal thoughts as well as diving into scripture. This is the first study/book I've read of the authors and I've loved it!
Disclosure: I received a copy of the book from the publisher for the purpose of reviewing it. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review.
This is a really great study on the book of Luke. It’s very engaging and geared toward helping you encounter Jesus in a new way. You get to engage with the study in daily segments in five day increments. The question We’re on point for me they inspired me to go deeper. If you are looking for a women’s summer study then this is for you. If you are like me and enjoy doing individual studies it’s for you too. You will want to tell other women about this study. Pick up this beautiful study and work through it for eight week you will be glad that you did.
This is a wonderful study on Luke. There is a lot of material covered over 8 weeks. Erica does a good job of sectioning the material into the 8 sessions.
My only critique of this study is that most all of the videos covered material which was not included in the current week’s homework. It would have been preferable to include those sections and then have the videos provide an overview of the whole week.
I led this study and we only used the videos on certain weeks where we felt it was applicable.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of The Unexplainable Jesus from Moody Publishers in exchange for my review.
Erica Wiggenhorn has done it again! If you wish to have an encounter with Jesus like you've never had before, this study is for you. Erica takes you back in time to the book of Luke. You will feel as though you are walking with Jesus through the streets, watching as he teaches and ministers to the people. Erica uses an inductive study message, taking you verse by verse. This is not a Bible study full of "fluff." This is a study meant to change you and help you grow. I love Erica's studies (I have all of them). I love to give these as gifts to family and friends because there is something for everyone in it. You won't be sorry that you purchased this book!
Erica Wiggenhorn has done it again -- provided an amazing Bible study for women hungry to dig into God's Word for themselves. I appreciate that Wiggenhorn doesn't just spoon feed her readers, but she does give just enough encouragement to let them know they're on the right track. Biblically sound and well-planned and prayed through, Wiggenhorn's 8-week study of the book of Luke helps readers see Jesus through new eyes and fall in love with Him all over again. She also helps readers see just how unexplainable Jesus is and how worthy He is of our worship and praise and our surrender. She also shows readers how very relevant God's Word is to every day life, leading them to hunger for more of Jesus and His Word. I highly recommend this study, whether you work through it alone or in a small group, it's worth your time, for sure! Learn how to live a life that's unexplainable in human terms because you follow an unexplainable Jesus who is so very worthy!
