Max Thorne is a Russian covert operative ... or is he?

Demoted FSB Agent Max Thorne, struggling with a troubled, unknown past and aimless future, accepts a near-impossible assignment: bring a traitor who is hiding in the United States back home to Russia.

Max has never lost any of the high-value detainees he transports, and this mission could prove his allegiance to the agency. But he’d be working in hostile territory, with an untested new team, and his career and life are on the line.

As the Russian team is ambushed while descending on Washington, DC, Max discovers that his fate is inescapably linked to that of the “traitor.” Now there is even more at stake … his mysterious past may tie him to the CIA.

With no time to determine whom to trust, will he find the courage to stand between the Russian service and an innocent man? And in doing so, will Max be deemed a traitor himself?

“We can’t ever know who’s on our side and who is playing for the enemy, or who even the enemy is.”
This is a one non-stop, nerve-wrecking, spine-tingling thriller that held my attention from start to finish. Lies, betrayal, and deception is the order of the day. From Russia to US, France.. this has been a roller coaster of a ride. The storyline is captivating from the beginning, from the Cold War to present day, spy concepts intertwined, secrets revealed, but more questions arise. A truly emotive turn out about trust, deceit, morality, espionage and counterespionage, with a gritty and sometimes cruel moments. It has been a thrilling ride! Looking forward to reading Agent Recruit #2!

Agent Rising - a review by Rosemary Kenny

This amazing new series introduces Maximilian Thorninovich, aka Max Thorne, a Russian FSB agent unfairly demoted to a 'desk job,' who's surprised
when the boss (who hates him), tells him he's being given a chance to redeem himself by carrying out a covert mission - in the USA!
Needless to say it's a set-up and Max soon finds himself under attack by SVR assassins, who aim to dispose of him and the 'traitor', Cold War ex-KGB agent
Valery Volkov, who has a special link to Max that he never would have believed. Volkov's companion and partner-agent, Ava also proves an asset to both men.

Will Max be able to complete his mission and stay alive? What truths is Volkov hiding - will he reveal them to Max?
Can the three agents return in safety to the motherland? Will Max be able to prove who set him up and why?

A great new series from a great author, Ethan Jones, who really should be a scriptwriter too - this masterpiece would make a great movie too, in the style of
Mission Impossible, mixed with Fast and Furious. I love the way the usual ex-Marine/CIA background has been turned on its head to enthrall the
discerning reader with the Cold War era of the demolition of the Berlin Wall at the beginning, showing that no matter who the 'spy-masters' are, double-dealing,
treachery and betrayal are far from being the prerogative of Western spy-thrillers! Agent Rising is sure to be a 5-star best-seller, so don't miss it at any cost!

Wow!

Ethan Jones has again managed to give realism, and a depth of knowledge about such a subject that I, and many reader's of Ethan's works that is hard to feel that he does justice to the genre.

Fantastic writing and difficult to find a fault.

Original story about stranding "good" Russians by bad Russians on the run in the US. Strong characters, action and pace but suspension of disbelief is required.

A Master class New Spy Thriller!
This is such a refreshing different spy thriller, which once you have started reading this or read the prequel novel called 18 minutes you will understand why. This is going to be so different from your usual spy thriller in that it revolves around a demoted Russian FSB agent Maximillian Thornichinovich alias Maximillian to his friends or just Max Thorne. Following on from the prequel Max is sent to America to bring home a traitor and that is where things turn out as not as straight forward as it looked. So much action so many untruths twist and turns and Max finally meets his father and learns more about his mother and her CIA connections. What Max thought was straight forward and what first seemed as the truth isn’t and soon he realises no one can be trusted. Ambushes, traitors and Max unsure who is telling the truth and is Max being a traitor himself? You will have to read this exciting enjoyable spy thriller with a plot you just have to follow and turn pages to find out the truth.
A masterful enjoyable thriller and I can’t wait for the next Max Thorne conclusion! A must read.

This is yet another action packed espionage thriller from a master of the genre. This is the first in the Max Thorne series which introduces us to the Russian FSB agent. I liked this alternative take on spy thrillers as we often only get to see the western agents. The ‘other side’ are always the bad guys which of course they can’t all be. There’s secrets in Max’s past that he knows little about but after a meeting with a CIA agent there are clearly people who do. This book sees Max working with very little information about a target he’s tasked with bringing back to Russia from the USA. As the story progresses we find there’s much more going on than even Max could have imagined. Ethan Jones packs a lot into this story and not wanting to spoil it I won’t say too much. There’s action all the way and some wonderfully ‘over-the-top’ action scenes that I thoroughly loved. Espionage, action, thrills and an entertaining plot all in one book written by an author with great talent and an eye for the genre. What more could you need? Very highly recommended.

Agent Rising
Max Thorne #1
By Ethan Jones

In a change of pace author, Ethan Jones instead of focusing on a Candian agent has turned his attention to Maximillian (Maxim) Thornichinovich an agent with Russia's FSB. We were introduced to Maxim in Eighteen Minutes when Maxim's job as a transporter took an unexpected turn that resulted in the Sheremetyevo International Airport receiving tens of thousands of dollars in damage, the package dying, and other agents dead. And now Maxim is stuck at a desk rather than in the field doing the job he loved and excelled at.

When offered a trial job with the SVR and the GRU as a transporter Maxim is more than willing to give this job his best especially as it will prove his worth. There's just one little catch - he will have to retrieve the package, a traitor, from America and work with other agents with whom he is unfamiliar. But what could go wrong?

The assignment Maxim is about to take on has deep links to the past both his and to the fall of the Berlin Wall. And unless he can shift through the layers to get to the truth this just might be one mission he won't come back from. But Max is determined and he has determined that nothing will stop him from completing his mission and regaining what his last assignment cost him. This mission just might take a little longer than anticipated as someone seems determined to stop him permanently. With trust at a premium, Max may have no choice but to rely on the very person he is transporting if they hope to make it out of America alive. But how much trust should you place on a traitor?

Those who have read Ethan Jones past books will enjoy this newest series starring Max Thorne (aka Maximillian Thornichinovich). Wondering where the name Max Thorne comes from? Well, you'll just have to read the book to find that out.

I was provided a copy of this book as a beta reader and have since purchased a final version of it. No expectations but providing my honest feedback - all thoughts expressed are my own.

Agent Rising is possibly the most fast paced book I’ve ever read and probably his best book to date.

I loved the cover and the intense storyline including a little back story that eventually gives us a more complete picture of Maximilian and the other characters in this book.

I loved that Max is quick to head his instincts that never fail him, his shyness (making him more human) and his morales. Even though he feels he was set up by one of his supervisors, Max accepts a very difficult task of transporting a traitor from American Soil without trusted back up Back to Russia.

Mr Jones made me feel as if I was in the middle of it all and part of the storyline along with the many twists and turns to where the end is different than expected.

With this book, Mr Jones has introduced us to a different side of the Spy game and how easy it is to frame agents and use them as scapegoats. Greed being the main reason.

Another excellent book by Mr Ethan Jones and a must read

I‘ve read several of Ethan Jones’ Justin Hall novels and thoroughly enjoyed them. When he offered a free review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, I jumped at the opportunity. I also purchased a copy to help support this outstanding author. The book is well-written, with a zig-zag plot that pulls the reader in and makes you feel part of the action, trying to figure out who is friend or foe. Mr. Jones provides enough details to capture the reader's attention and keep him/her engaged in a very fast-paced adventure. It reads like a high-speed movie chase, with all the twists and turns that seem to come out of nowhere. He proves that a writer can produce a great book using clean language, no sex scenes, and without overly graphic descriptions of blood and guts. As the story progresses, a person from Max's past is introduced, who is able to explain a lot of the anomalies in Max's background. I found it hard to stop reading, even for meals and sleep. The ending was pretty good; it set up a wealth of plot possibilities. I highly recommend this book and will certainly read more books in this series.

This is the first full novel in this series. The opening chapter refers to activity which occurred during the Cold War. This will play a larger role during the rest of the story.
Max Thorne has been demoted as a result of the action which occurred in the novella “18 Minutes”. He is given an opportunity to reestablish his credibility by assisting the SVR and GRU organization. His role for this is still as a transporter.
In this assignment Max teams up with a member of the GRU and while attempting to complete his assignment he runs into multiple attacks while trying to get his charges back to Russia.
The trials that he has to overcome keep the reader highly involved and facts which come up during the story will be quite eye opening.
The characters and action keep you interested in the story right to the end and you will tend to stay reading this until you're finished , I know I stayed up past midnight to finish it.

I highly recommend this book.

Well, first off. I really enjoyed this as the first book in the series. How do you know the first in the series is a really good read? ... you want to read the next one asap. That's how I feel about this book.

I'm an avid reader and this genre is my favourite - as such I'll continue on with Max Thorne. The writing is great - it flows and whilst there is a lot going on in the story, you never feel lost or "wait, who is that?" etc.

Highly recommend this excellent starter to what I feel anyway, is a promising series of the adventures of Max!

Agent Max Thorne is a keeper. Volker and Ava are quite mysterious and exciting. The plot is twisty and fast moving. It’s all very entertaining except the author didn’t tie up all the loose ends. I’m always disappointed to be forced to get another book to finish the previous one.

Agent Rising. Ethan Jones

Max Thorne, this is actually a shortened version of his Russian name has been betrayed. Raised by adoptive parents, not really sure who his real parents are. They know, and his real father, a Russian operative has to remain in the shadows. Max has become a pawn, a scapegoat to people in power. not aware of who his real parents are. His father now branded a traitor. Max is tasked with bringing him back to Russia. To face a certain tortuous death. Then Max is betrayed by his handlers. They have sent agents to kill him. The mystery slowly surfaced to Max. Now, he has turned the tables against his superiors. This is a highly suspenseful, masterfully written novel. My highest recommendation.

I received a free copy of this book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

Ethan Jones’s, Max Thorne, is an exciting new agent. He is sent on a mission to bring home a rogue agent who has turned on his homeland and has killed some of his fellow agents from Russia. Max, who loves Russia, and would do anything for his country, agrees to go to America, retrieved the captured traitor, and bring him back to Russia. This would be his first foreign assignment, but Max is confident in his ability to accomplish his mission.

That was before he found out that this mission wasn’t as easy as it had been presented to him. He knew people would be after his captive, what he didn’t know was that they would be after him, too. That is only one of the surprises Max is in for in this exciting spy mystery. There are twists to this tale that make it one of those books you stay up late to read. Maybe an all nighter, if you need to know the ending as quickly as possible. But make sure you can sleep late in the morning.

The characters in this book are well-developed, believable and likeable. I enjoyed following their adventures and was drawn in quickly. They captured my imagination with their sincerity and sense of loyalty. I highly recommend this book and look forward to more adventures with them.

Agnet Rising definitely means Author Ethan Jones RISING too as a very accomplished and skilled writing bringing Agent Rising to the TOP of my list of GREAT READS of the YEAR!! Max Thorne, is given an assignment to make a “transfer” to a safe house, and had a record of handling “transfers” VERY WELL. But this transfer goes awry in a heartbeat and Max found himself in a huge amount of trouble with having to make decisions fast. This book then finds the reader turning pages fast and faster to find out “What NEXT?” Filled with twists and turns and surprises and a huge amount of ACTION, mystery and suspense. Time stopped for me as I could not put down Agent Risng until I was through, stopping only for must do’s along the way. I never could have guessed what was coming next. NO SPOILERS here...but grab Agent Rising and get ready for a great read! HIGHLY recommend Agent Rising for a thriller or a read. ENJOY!!

Max isn’t perfect. He’s a loyal agent with a healthy skepticism about any given operation. He’s a little bit shy around women who matter to him personally and he’s a loyal friend. He’s kind to people who aren’t strictly speaking “part of his job”. He’s an ace driver but can’t shoot with precision. He also has a fantastically quirky sense of humor. I had learned most of this in the prequel, but it’s no less true here when he crosses international boundaries to complete his latest mission. Nothing is quite what it seems to be so it’s very good Max doesn’t take anything at face value. What he might get in the end is a whole lot more than he bargained for.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.

This series is going to be so different to the authors other work. I love everything the author writes and this change from Canadian operatives to centre on a Russian agent is very interesting. I have no idea what made the author decide to go down this track but I am very glad he did. To say I enjoyed it would be an understatement this is really a fast paced and masterfully executed thriller. Agent Thorne has the potential to be a first rate operative if given half the chance. I have a feeling it wont be long before that chance comes along and we will be reading about it.

Very suspenseful and a great read

This is the first book I have read by this author. I enjoyed it very much. The characters are to say the least colorful. They come to life as you read and seem like real people. The story line is complex and realistic. It occurs during the cold war with Russia and all.kinda of crazy happenings. The storyline is exciting and keeps your interest to the very end. I recommend reading this book of you like exciting adventure and lots of intrigue. Warning the first book is a cliff hanger and you will immediately want to read the second book.

Agent Max Thorne is an FSB agent who has been demoted to a desk job due to a mission that didn't go according to plan and someone had to be blamed. Another agency tasks Max due to his skills to bring a suspected Russian traitor from Washington DC back to Russia for punishment. Once Max gets to US soil all hell breaks loose and there is no one he can truly trust. While trying to stay alive Max receives information from the so called traitor that can change Max's life forever, but is it for the better or for the worst...

Weird point of view, a Russian agent is the star. The writing feels like maybe freshman college level, or I'm generous. Things felt patched together a lot, now this then that, not good flow. Nothing sparkled as a surprise or interesting, but easy enough to go through so I finished it. Well, except it was not complete. Instead, cliff hangers. I really really hate those and was not warned. So, ok story, of whatever actually was finished, but not great, maybe more like an episode of a TV show script than a book, and a freaking cliff hanger on top of that.

Maximillian Thornichinovich is assigned an operation by the SVR, who has applied to work for. A simple job of bringing a traitor from the United States back to Russia that soon becomes anything but simple and will change his life forever. In the midst of attempts on his life and the man he is to return to Russia, he learns about his own parents, that he never knew. An entertaining, action filled novel.

Agent Rising is the first of a new spy series, adding to Ethan Jones' previous Justin Hall & Javin Pierce spy stories.

Why should you read it? Well, it's totally off-the-wall different because Max Thorne is a spy for Russia's SVR intelligence agency.

If you enjoy the spy thriller genre, then you need to add this one to your list. You most likely won't find a better author in this category.

A Good Spy Thriller!

Read 18 Minutes before reading Agent Rising. Everything will make more sense. I enjoy a good spy thriller and Agent Rising did not disappoint. Max, Ava, and Volkov are intriguing. I want to know more about them and their history. Their search for a rogue agent is just beginning after finding each other after all the years since the wall came down in Berlin. Many exciting stories to come. I am on to the next book in the series.

A demoted FSB agent asks for a transfer and soon finds himself doing the same job except in America. He soon finds that some of the people he’s dealing with are not who they seem and others are surprises he never expected. International intrigue with and mayhem is the menu for Max Thorne. A very engaging cast of characters, non stop action and an amazing story line makes this a book you simply can’t put down !

I was a bit disappointed in that the beginning was fast and captured my interest then it sort of took a very slow pace until 3/4's of the way through and went hell for leather again.

This is not my first Ethan Jones book so was expecting a lot more but to be fair I did enjoy the book from half way on to the end where I realised I would definitely have to read Book 2 to find out what happens to Max next.
