Events seem to unfold in one disaster after another, in Max’s multiple missions. From Portugal, France, Belize, Chile.. the chase seems unavoidable..full of risk and dangerous situations and chaotic circumstances. High octane persecutions take us to lovely sites and cities, with a vivid description of the landscapes, the dangerous scenarios, with slippery, untrustworthy villains playing their insidious games on both sides. Spy games are taken to the limit, with confrontations from different foreign agencies, all of them after Max and his team. An embroiled and fascinating world of espionage! An exciting and fast-paced novel that will keep you reading way past your bedtime! Looking forward to reading Agent Assassin #3 soon!
This Russian series is so different to the Canadian ones that the author writes. Max is very new to the world of espionage and still has a lot to learn. It is interesting to watch his progression as he moves forward in this very dangerous and secretive world. It is easy to make mistakes and the price for that can be very costly. I think that must be constantly in the back of every agents mind most of the time. This story is very exciting and fraught with danger at every step. It is fast paced and action packed and my heart was beating fast with tension while I was reading it was so riveting. It really is a brilliant read I absolutely loved it.
It's been four weeks since Max's detainee-transfer assignment that went wrong and he, his father - Valery Volkov, and his girlfriend Ava are in London on a quest for information. But when they find themselves betrayed and on the wrong side of MI5 their personal mission just got a whole lot more difficult.
As Max and the rest of his team start globe-hopping, Max's inexperience and impatience are about to cost him and it is just a question of how much. As Max works towards the team's ultimate goal of stopping Zlobin and obtaining information about Max's late mother he makes a rash decision that, if he survives, he may regret.
This is the second book in the Max Thorne series and it doesn't let down on the action that we've previously seen at Max's side in Eighteen Minutes and Agent Rising. And Max's ability at making enemies seems to be a special gift that he needs to work on distancing himself from especially if he's like to make it to middle age.
Max is not a reworked Justin Hall or Javin Pierce. Ethan Jones has again brought to life a character that is unique and not perfect - Max's flaws are what give him character and life. If you like thrilling spycraft fiction and have not yet picked up any of Ethan Jones previous books give this one a try but you should read Agent Rising first as it is the first book in the series where the mystery of Max's past comes into play in a big way. Eighteen Minutes is the series prequel that provides the backstory that shows how Max is now in the place that he is. And what place is Max in you ask? He has managed to get on the FSB's list of persona non grata.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book - no expectations were placed on me. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
Move over Jason Bourne and Ethan Hunt - there's a new spy in town and his name's Max Thorne!, should be the 'tag-line' for when this excellent spy-thriller with a twist is made into a blockbuster spy-thriller of a film as it's sure to do.
MC Max is an ex-KGB spy/assassin, who's on the hunt for the truth about his past - and how his future, as a 'rookie' for the FSB, led to his bosses' betrayal and Max himself becoming their target, as he persists in seeking answers to his - and his mother's, in this novel - betrayal by their CIA handlers. Working with his girlfriend Ava and Valery Valkov, the man Max discovered to be his biological father work together to avoid capture, (though in Max's case he is captured briefly) and reveal the truth as to what happened to his mother. The trail leads across the globe to Asia, Europe and South America and the 3D build up of Max's character and emotions, will keep the eager all-action spy-thriller enthusiast on the edge of their seat and reading til the small hours, as Agent Recruit is far too good to put down before the last page! Don't wait to read Ethan Jones' latest series, An Assassination Military Suspense Action Adventure Thriller, of which Agent Recruit is Book 2, then read the first book, Agent Rising and the prequel to Book 2, 18 Minutes, which are both excellent too - grab your copy as soon as you can!
The next step for Max and another must read. This book follows 18 minutes and Agent Rising centred on a demoted Russian FSB agent Maximillian Thornichinovich to his friends or just Max Thorne. I have said this previously with the first two books, this is such a refreshing and different spy thriller, which once you have started reading this or read the prequel novels you will understand why. The story starts in Lisbon Portugal then to a park in London with Max his partner Avelina Alexandrova or better known as Ava and his team are with his father Valery Volkov meet with a man called Taylor an ex-SIS agent to try and track down a man called Zlobin but the meeting goes badly wrong. The story crosses back and forth from Santiago Chile, to Portugal, London MI5 headquarters to Nice in France to Belize, Cancun Mexico before eventually ending up in Playa del Carmen Mexico Full of action and lots of twists and turns throughout. You have Russian, MI5 agents, car chases, and much, much more. If you want a full on action spy story, with a difference this book and series is for you. A book lies and untruths twists and turns to keep the story and pages flying! A masterful and very enjoyable thriller and I really can’t wait for the next Max Thorne conclusion and his next new adventure. This book and the series are going to be a must read.
Max returns from the U.S. with his father. Max and his father along with Ava are trying to get information from the CIA regarding Max's mother. They have to track down one of Max's father enemies and bring him back alive if possible. Their adventures in the exercise have them going to Portugal, France, Columbia and Mexico.
During this episode, Max is captured while attempting to grab the Russian. He escapes, but his actions have caused issues and Ava is put in charge of the group. This is only part of the action that comes up in this story which involves MI5 and SIS in addition to the French Special Services while they continue searching
If you want to find out what happens in the end and if they are successful in getting his mother's information, then you need to read the book which I highly recommend.
After a period of recovery in the USA, Max Thorne is a Russian who works for FSB as a transporter but has at the moment been demoted, and is waiting to hear if he has his job back, while on his last mission he meets up with Valery Volkov the traitor or was he? but on all accounts, it's his father and now that has opened up wounds as to what happened to his mother, was she a traitor working for the CIA and KGB? While trying to find and sorting out the missing pieces he always seems to be one step behind, this goes from bad to worse and although going thru different countries Max seems as if he's not cut out to be a spy, one mistake after another not good, and that put Ava his partner in danger and is taken prisoner due to his mistakes, will she get released Volkov is working on it.? Does Max even have a job after all whats happened, the Russian are good at telling you that you can't do your job. This is fast-paced action as you would expect of Ethan Jones. The author has thought this out well, and having a Russian Spy is different but I think the character Max needs a bit more polish as an agent, at the moment could be mistaken for Johnny English.
Ethan Jones is back with another Max Thorne thriller. Right from the start Max is back in action and I mean action! How Ethan Jones crams so much action into the book and also tell such an engaging story is a mystery to me. What’s really fun for me about this book, and the series too, is that Max is fallible. We see him trying to do what he thinks is best but quite often it’s not the best decision. He creates several problems that he could have avoided, but that being said then we’d have missed out on the fun part where he has to put things right. The story flies by like a fast paced action movie and before you know it you’re nearing the end. I’ve read all the books in this fairly new series which makes returning to these characters more enjoyable but if you wanted you could start out with this one as it works well on its own. Ethan Jones has set high standards for his writing with his previous books but he manages to deliver again with Agent Recruit. This is a fast paced action thriller that hits all the right notes on storytelling and fun. Highly recommended.
This book will take you around the globe, so strap your seatbelt on, because you never know what kind of turbulence you'll hit. From the #1 best-selling author of the Justin Hall series, comes another brand new series.
Events seem to unfold in one disaster after another, in Max’s multiple missions. From Portugal, France, Belize, Chile.. the chase seems unavoidable..full of risk and dangerous situations and chaotic circumstances. High tentions take us to awesome sites and cities, with a vivid description of the landscapes, the dangerous scenarios, with deceptions characters at every corner, playing their insidious games on both sides. Spy games are taken to the limit, with confrontations from different foreign agencies, all of them after Max and his team. An embroiled and fascinating world of espionage! An exciting and fast-paced novel that will keep you reading way past your bedtime!
Russian FSB agent Thorne recently finished a mission that ended in disaster. Not his fault but someone has to be blamed. He is now working for a former KGB agent who has also suffered betrayal and the loss of someone he truly loved. A double agent, KGB and the CIA. Her true alligence was always with the KGB, she never betrayed her country or gave up any secrets that would harm Russia to her American handler. This ultimately cost her her life. She, Max learns was his mother. KGB agent Volkov, her lover is Mac's father. Max is now helping him to try to find out her true alliance from her CIA handler now classified as a traitor by the CIA. This is an extremely fast paced read full of deceit, betrayal with twists and turns to the very end. Enjoyed immensely.
First I love how Mr. Jones writes an action thriller that is clean and for all ages. Rare gem these days. Now this story is a great pace. It doesn't drag on. I love the way it just moves and flows. I love the the different locales it moves to as well. Great details in all of the areas. The writing get a bit sloppy at times. Like saying no safety on a Glock. Also, the protagonist of the MI5 agent seems built up and then she is just left hanging at times, mostly just a filler character at the end. Volkin is great as character though. Loved him. The best character in the book besides Max. I really hope to see Max and the author develop some more. I can tell both have some great potential.
Ethan Jones scores BIG with this highly recommended novel. Agent Recruit was another superb read. Think I enjoyed it even more (if possible) than Jones' 18 Minutes, due largely to the on-going development of the characters, especially Max. The story line was well defined, action filled, intense and provocative. The use of parallel plot lines was clean and not confusing as so often happens in books of this genre. Unfortunately many espionage authors switch the reader back and forth so much and with so many subplots it is difficult, at least for me, to keep track of the story and characters. The novel's conclusion left a tantalizing clue as to Max's next adventure -can't wait! This is one of the best series I've read in a very long time. I received an advanced review copy in exchange for an honest review.
I’m liking where this is going so far, and I can’t wait to read more. Max’s vulnerability, his humanity, make it very easy to connect with him. I like that Max is still a little inexperienced at what’s being asked of him. It makes his inevitable mistakes very believable. And I love that his new goal is assassin even though his marksmanship kind of stinks. I can’t quite decide whether I love or hate that ending. In some ways it felt too easy, but I can see where the author is leading us in order to set up the next book and the rest of the series. I do kind of like that we don’t have confirmation that Zlobin is dead, so there’s the possibility that, like Max, he escaped the fireball and can be running around generating chaos for them in the future. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.
We are taken on a whirlwind tour of a half dozen countries as the chase is on to catch the man who is carrying out attacks against Max’s father. It seems bad guys are popping up everywhere! I’m really enjoying the mystery, wondering who is really behind all this and why. Despite all the action, the author manages to weave in bits of life in these countries that is different than ours— the food, vehicles I’ve never heard of, a local custom. A British intelligence agent who likes to do things she’s not supposed to keeps appearing and I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of this new character in future books. Max once again makes a couple bad decisions. Can his father fix the mess or is Max in real trouble this time? Things are about to change and I can’t wait to find out how.
I‘ve read several of Ethan Jones’ Justin Hall novels and thoroughly enjoyed them. When he offered a free review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, I jumped at the opportunity. I also purchased a copy to help support this outstanding author.
The book is well-written; the story pulls you in at once and keeps you engaged in a very fast-paced adventure. I am not a fast reader, but I could not put it down: I read it in one sitting, and got to bed very late! Mr. Jones continues to prove that a writer can produce a great book using clean language, no sex scenes, and without overly graphic descriptions of blood and guts. As the series progresses, Max, our rookie spy, continues to make mistakes through over-eagerness, from which he’s learning valuable lessons and gaining confidence. I highly recommend this book and will certainly read more books in this series.
After an assignment in the United States does not go as planned, Max is placed on leave by his Russian department boss while an internal review is conducted. While awaiting the results, Max is assisting another former Russian agent, who he has recently learned is also his father that he never knew. They are working on getting the man or men responsible for killing Max's mother right after he was born, and who also is trying to take out his father after all these years. Lots of action and betrayals along the way. Taking the reader to several different countries and on lots of adventures, some successful and some not so much so.
Ethan Jones takes the reader on a real roller coaster ride and Agent Recruit becomes a winner book to read. Thrilling, exciting and unexpected happenings makes Agent Recruit a book you fast realize you do not wish to put down. Max Thorne learns a lot in this book, and adapts rather quickly to finally a lot of truths that leave him reeling and leaves the reader reeling too! Great developed characters and plot is very original and with that and Ethan Jones’ ability to WRITE, makes this a book that I highly recommend reading. NO disappointments. ENJOY!!!
Agent Recruit is Book 2 in the Max Thorn (ne: Maximillian Thornichinovich) series. Actually, it's Book 3 if you count the prequel entitled, 18 Minutes.
This is a true one-of-a-kind thriller series about a Russian FSB agent instead of a U.S. spy character who finds himself in all sorts of adventures both in Russia and the U.S. Book Two continues to take the reader on a path with great characters and scenes that makes the book difficult to put down.
Agent Recruit makes Mr. Jones one of the top authors in the spy genre of books.
Max is treated as a ‘rookie’ by the CIA. He definitely does not share their attitude toward innocent bystanders becoming ‘collateral damage’. He also has an agenda he and his father are trying to accomplish, and no reason to entirely trust the CIA either. Overtime he tries to save a situation he seems to acquire another entanglement. Can a story be both humorous and deadly at the same time? Give it a read and find out. There is definitely lots of action, and a great plot.
Max Thorn is back in a great mixture of East and West cultures and intrigue. The story will pull you in and keep you flipping pages all the way to the end of the book. Careful research is displayed throughout on the weapons and settings, the accuracy just adds to the enjoyment.
I love the book cause it's fast action and we know how Max feels. The characters are well developed. I would recommend this book to anyone. It's really a great book.
I've been enjoying this series and that includes this one and two others. However, this one didn't seem to move as quickly as the first two. I do plan to continue the series. I rate this one 4.5 stars.
Agent Recruit takes off where Agent Rising left us and has Max, Valery and Ava traversing the globe.
This book is fast paced, action packed, full of unexpected twists and turns, very well researched and ultimately a very well written book. I loved that Max’s character feels reel, not perfect yet humble.
While it isn’t necessary to read 18 Minutes and Agent Rising before Agent Recruit, I do recommend it.
Another excellent book by Mr Ethan Jones and a must read
Max Thorn is a very intriguing character. So many books are US based so it is refreshing to have one with a Russian based perspective. Max is new to the world of espionage, as a result he makes mistakes and/or not the best decisions. This adds to the suspense. this is an action packed page turning read!
I enjoy that Ethan Jones writes clean novels. There is lots of action and intrigue without explicit language or sex scenes.
I cant wait to see what Ethan has in store for Max next!
