A glow-in-the-dark, interactive guide to the Solar System, carefully crafted to make complex STEM concepts like astronomy, physics and chemistry understandable for children aged 8-12. Barefoot Books Solar System joins the celebrated Barefoot Books World Atlas as another standout nonfiction title on Barefoot's list to explore the world and universe.
I'd give this well-illustrated nonfiction title a 3.5 and definitely include it in my science classroom library. Not only are there lift-the-tab entitled "Did You Know?" features that make it interactive, but the cover and large poster of all the planets that has been inserted in a pocket in the back of the book glow in the dark, which will add to the feeling that readers are gazing up into the heavens and into our galaxy as they read. In addition to providing information about the origins of the universe and clarifying the two types of planets, the text gives an overview of each of the eight planets, the sun, the moon (ours and other planets'), and what lies beyond Pluto. There are even two pages devoted to space exploration. The bright colors used for the images and titles on each page contrast vividly with the black background, a design decision that fits well with the subject matter and the notion of space. Originally published in France, this book provides an easy-to-understand introduction to various topics related to astronomy, physics, and chemistry. Teachers and caregivers can't miss with a book like this one, intended to spark further curiosity in old and young.
