The Duke Conspiracy

Rate this book
Anything is possible with a spying debutante, a duke, and a conspiracy.

Growing up, Rose and Alex were the best of friends until their families became embroiled in a feud. Now, the Season is throwing them into each other’s company. Despite the spark of attraction they might feel for one another, they each want very different things in life, besides needing to support their own family’s side in the dispute.

Miss Rosamund Smythe is finding the Season to be a dead bore after spying with her father, a baron diplomat, in Vienna. She wants more out of life than just being some nobleman’s wife. When she overhears a plot to entrap Alex into a marriage of convenience, her intrigue and some last vestige of loyalty causes them to overcome the feud.

His Grace, Alexander Milton, the Duke of Wrentham, wants a quiet life with a “proper” wife after his tumultuous childhood. His parents had fought viciously, lied often, and Alex had hated it all.

Rose’s meddling puts her in danger. Alex will have to leave the simple peace he craves to claim a love he never could have imagined. Can they claim their happily ever after despite the turmoil?

Rosie and Alex have known each other since they were kids, but now their families are enemies. But when Rosie overhears a conspiracy against Alex, her loyalty to her childhood friend wins over her loyalty to her family's feud. There are some complicated twists and turns they need to straighten out, and a conspirator that needs to be stopped. I loved how Rosie was not a simpering heroine - she had a lot of backbone and spunk. Alex thought he was looking for a tame bride, until he remembered how alive it felt to be with Rosie.

Cute, clean romance mixed with a little adventure; I would read more by this author.

A clean book, but that's the only nice thing I can say about it. There was no romance. There was no characterization. There was no conflict. The bad guy wasn't bad. The peril wasn't perilous. The feud that lasted 3 years was cleared up in a paragraph and was ridiculous. The hero was bland. The heroine was nondescript. I just don't see the point of this book.

I thought that this book could have been shorter and didn't understand the use of some words. For example, why was everyone scratching at the door instead of knocking? I like the friendship between the Duke of Wrentham and Rosamund Smythe though I do think that a little more emotional intimacy that builds towards romantic feelings would have been exciting to read.

I DNFed The Duke Conspiracy earlier this year, but when I came across it again a few days ago, I decided to try and finish it up.
I shouldn't have.

Rose and Alex used to be best friends, but now there's a feud between the two families. However, when Rose overhears a conversation of two men conspiring to trap Alex into a marriage with the daughter of one of them, she feels she needs to help her old pal.

While the premise sounded intriguing, the plot actually turned out rather thin. There isn't a lot going on in much of the book, except for the characters endlessly repeating information to other characters in long and unnatural dialogues. The pace picks up towards the end, but everything is resolved so quickly that there's no real tension.

This could have been a nice short story, but as a novel it didn't work for me.

Great plot, interesting characters but I can do with a better ending

I was surprised to have fallen in love with the characters in this book. Flawed but charming and realistic. Loved the intrigues and can't wait to read more

Good read

Capulets and Montagues type story, which has mystery, courage, and faithfulness at its center. It’s an enjoyable read overall, although there is a good bit of repetition in dialogue. If you’re bothered by dialogue not being time appropriate, this is not the book for you as word choice (“Sure, we can do that.”), is often distracting. Book could use some editing but four stars for the involved and unexpected plot.

The Duke Conspiracy

I thoroughly enjoyed this tangled mystery. So much action throughout this exciting story. I could not put this one down until the end. I'm going to read the next story.

This was quite an enjoyable read, although there was a good amount of repetitive dialogue. I liked the characters of Rose, Alex and their friends, Dunbar and Elizabeth. Rose was a managing person and she did perhaps think she was making more capable than she was. Alex was quite understanding. I would have liked a bit more romance between them and I definitely missed an epilogue. There is a menace in the story to add interest. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed the Duke Conspiracy!
Totaly clean which is nice. Although it's not a fast paced read the story does keep you hooked to the end. It's easy to fall in love with the characters, even the secondary ones. 4.5 stars. Enjoyable and sweet!

Charming

Well written characters and a story that will grab you from the start. A thoroughly delightful escape from this modern world we inhabit.

I have been in the mood for some good old fashioned historical romance à la Amanda Quick so the plot of this novel definitely piqued my interest. However, I was very quickly disappointed with the nature of the "plot against her childhood friend".

Rose and Alex were pretty ho-hum characters, with very little to make them note-worthy.

The family feud was ridiculous and thin, barely explained until later in the book, you just kinda had to read between the lines, I was expecting something salacious at that point, but it was glossed over and that made it difficult to understand how exactly that had become so estranged. I actually would have liked it better if they had secretly remained friends.

While, the lack of historical accuracy doesn't bother me a bit, the lack of a follow through on a promise does as the synopsis greatly under-delivered. Spy? Hardly. Nefarious conspiracy? Barely. In fact it was so convolutely I didn't entirely understand why the Duke was even the target!!!!

Catching the villain was a little anticlimactic, as was the marriage proposal and declaration of love. All in all this was a weak story in all ways that matter to me as a reader. It wasn't necessarily bad, per se, but I was expecting more. A better villain, more romance (I have to say that while I prefer more smut I am happy with a cleaner read, but I definitely needed more chemistry), a richer understanding of why I should be rooting for these two and not her and the Duke's best friend, Wesley, for example, because he definitely smoldered for her and I had thoughts of a ménage that distracted me from the lack of steam in the actual book.

Everything was just vague and fluffy. Their youth together was alluded to but would have been better done by with a flashback or story-telling moment reminiscing a specific incident to understand better their relationship and closeness. The feud, which was barely resolved, because it was barely explained. I would probably have appreciated the feud being explained while Dunbar and Rose were on the carriage ride earlier in the book (as alluded to when they had the conversation while dancing) to open her eyes earlier and give some context to the reader.

The story was enjoyable, but could have been better and while I would read more by the author I'm not chafing at the bit to pick up the next book.

Miss Rosamund Smythe is the daughter of a Diplomat who is a Baron. She is 20 and has assisted her father by spying on sinister men who are traitors to England. She pretends to be an empty-headed debutante and the arrogant men speak of secrets they believe she is too naive to understand.
Rosamund and her family have returned to London and she is participating in her first Season and finds it dreadfully boring until she overhears a conversation involving a long-time friend. Her family and her former friend's family are estranged now due to a recent tragedy. Rosamund fears her father will overlook the matter due to the feud between the families but she must do something to save her friend.
She sends a note to her friend, Alex, the Duke of Wrentham and they meet secretly. She explains the plot against him and they make plans to discover more about the situation.
The more Alex and Rosamund meet the stronger their attraction to each other grows. They both try unsuccessfully to overcome their personal feelings but they do hide their feelings from each other.
Soon the plot against the duke centers on Rosamund and her life is in danger. Alex tries to protect her but things get out of hand and he must confront her father, feud or no feud.
This could have been a fabulous story but it seemed to bog down every few pages and I did not think I was ever going to finish.

I've been plowing through Wendy May Andrews catalogue because I've been on a Regency romance kick that I just can't seem to be rid of. And for the most part, while I don't find her novels to be anything to write home about, they are fairly entertaining and are pretty quick to finish.

But I thought that the author's tendency to abandon all subplots and sometimes the main plot such that everything that would be of interest from an action perspective occurs completely off page, was only a feature of her Sherton Sisters series. To be honest, that's why I gave up on it after reading the third novel in the series (in addition to the other two sisters getting their own novels when they've virtually been afterthoughts throughout the first three). Instead, it seems to be a reoccurring trend.

And I just hate that the mystery aspect of this novel was not addressed in a way such that it comes to a more enveloping conclusion. So much so that the romance was not enough to keep me on the path of continuing with her novels.

So while this was by no means a poor story, I'm just not in the mood for the main plots or subplots of the story to be swept aside for the romance.

This is alright. Tolerable, slightly enjoyable.

As others have indicated it is a clean read. Characters only engage in light kissing a few times.

The premise of the story is what drew me to this story, but I struggled to stay around. I almost stopped reading this and deleted it when the author wrote the same information coming from three different characters. I’m sorry but I am not stupid and don’t need info repeated to me. It definitely could have been worded differently in the story to be less tedious and still progress the story.

The story is a little slow to start, but does pick up. The ending is a little to quick to happen and I felt it ended to abruptly.

Based on reviews of the next book (Elizabeth’s story) I am going to pass on it. I also do not care about Lady Anne so I won’t be reading book 3. Admittedly I am disappointed Elizabeth wasn’t set up with Wesley. This is also keeping me from reading the series further. Don’t even get me started on the name Justice used in a historical romance. Ugh.

I will try a different series by this author so that is something positive for the author….a second chance.

Despite their families being at loggerheads, Rosamund is still attracted to her former best friend, the Duke of Wrentham. When she overhears a conversation plotting to entrap him, she feels that in spite of their families' estrangement, she should nevertheless warn Alex about the plot against him. As the story evolves, it becomes clear that more is afoot than they first believed. The relationship between Alex and Rose is sweet and clean and although there is no great passion between them, they realise that their friendship still stands, despite the animosity between their warring families. Although there is an interesting, suspenseful plot, and even some romance, the story is mostly driven by conversations. I found the mix of old fashioned and modern language a bit jarring in parts. Nevertheless, it is a sweet story and comes to a happy close. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Clean, good plot, too wordy

I am thrilled to find another clean writing author. I thank her for this novel. I would have given this 5 stars, except for the incessant talking Rosamunde did..with her maid, & with the Duke. Rattling on snd on as if there was nothing else important. And I really grew tired of her superior attitude that she was a great spy. I don't think the author meant that to be a character trait, but it seemed obvious to me. But I immensely enjoyed the story itself. I loved the Duke's character. The end to the feud (though the Duke's family wasn't in the story even though they were part of the feud) was very abrupt, along with Rosie ever mentioning that she might be falling in love. The Duke showed he cared about her. Other than her attempt to help him evade a marriage scheme, she seemed to care more about being a spy than in getting to know him. Sorry, I guess I just wasn't fond of Rosamunde at all. Ha!

A clean story. I liked it. However, I did have some grouses. Mainly it was around the ending. We spent a lot of time wondering in the story why the baddy is trying to manipulate people and what he is after. We also learn is very dangerous. Rosie’s father says he has measures in place yet she is easily abducted from a ball. Everyone then is chasing the evil Broderick, after his blood, but we hear nothing of how he is captured, which is a shame. Given everyone knows he is devious and up to no good why was he still free to move around and attend so many events. We also do not know if there are any repercussions for Rosie following her abduction. Okay, she is immediately going to marry a Duke but be nice to know if there are rumours. And lastly what happens to Lady Elizabeth. Lady Ann etc. be nice to see their reactions to Rosie’s engagement, or do we learn more in the next books in this series. If so it is not
Immediately clear in the version I read.

I loved this book!
Rose and Alex were best friends growing up, until a terrible falling out happened between their parents. During her first Season, she's doing her best to avoid him, but then she overhears a plot against him being discussed. Can she really push aside their old friendship and leave it to play out? Or can she find a way to help him without her parents knowing of it?
This had a lot of mystery and intrigue. I really enjoy Wendy's style of writing and her characters. Not only are Alex and Rose great, but each of their friends are also engaging. I like reading Wendy's books because I can trust that they will be clean.
This book was perfect and then I discovered there are 2 more books in this series, involving their friends. YAY!

You can hide your feelings, but that does not make them go away

I loved the way in which Rose let her loyalty and friendship with Alex guide her to sharing what she had heard that could harm him. She was willing to stand up to her parent's anger over her brother's death to help Alex, and I thought Rose very brave. She kept secrets from many, but in the end Alex's friend gave the true account of the deaths of each of the brothers fighting on the peninsula and Alex coming to Rose's rescue cleared the way for this star crossed couple. I loved the chance for Rose to hone her spying skills!

Recency romance with a little suspense.

Alex and Rose were best friends as children and Their feelings change as they grew older. After the death of both their brothers the families became estranged and contact was prohibited. Alex and Rose were meant to be together and I was hoping for their happy ever after. When they get involved in stopping a threat against Alex they are placed in danger.

Although I liked the story and characters I thought the middle went on too long. Of course that gave Alex and Rose more time to spend together. Also I thought the ending was rather abrupt.

The story was well written and if you like Recency you will enjoy this.

From childhood friends to adult enemies

Alex and Rose were childhood friends then their families became sworn enemies! This story is action packed but it is not at first apparent why this two are at odds just that they both lost a brother! It involves very little passion or steamy scenes but if you like humor, quips and secret meetings this is the story for you! Rose is beautiful nosy but intelligent and this story resolves a mystery and ends in a HEA without a lose of reputation! Read on...

Family feuds, greedy plots, forbidden love and a miss with a sense of adventure, all in one book. Wendy May Andrews gives us a story with all of these plus great character descriptions and an easy flowing story line. It was fun finding out how Rose was going to see her former friend, Alex the Duke of Wrentham, when their families had not spoken to each other in 3 years. This is a well written story with strong main characters and supporting friends.

This book has strong characters and an interesting storyline. Rose and Alex were friends for most of their lives but a family feud tore them apart 3 years ago. When Rose overhears someone plotting against Alex, she feels that she needs to reach out to warn him.

Suspense, drama, family feuds, and a clean romance all combine to make this an enjoyable book.

Editing is descent

Plot could have been good but. Way to much stilted conversation and English slang of the age. Explaining an abduction in a thousand words or more cuts down on the suspense or sense of adventure. Way too much manners and not enough substance. Don't waste your time or money. I have rated this story a 3* only because I would like to believe Ms.Andrews could do better.

I liked the story but there was a fair amount of repetition and a lot of filler that was distracting. Like the duke dithering on the doorstep and then requesting a drink before telling the dad that his daughter was abducted and then running home to change clothes. The cause of the big family feud was weak- your son made my son join the army and then they both died together. And then another friend said, no they both joined independently and loved the army. Conflict resolved.

I really wanted to like this book. The storyline kept me wanting to finish the book, but I kept putting it down. It was a hard read-a lot of repetitive dialogue. (The amount of times “Your Grace” was duplicated in a sentence would make a good drinking game) The long standing feud was resolved in a very short snippet. The author tried to weave a lot of politics into the plot and the height of the drama was anti-climactic.

The Duke Conspiracy is book one in Mayfair Mayhem series. I struggled through most of this story. The plot is very, very slow with way too much dialogue and little action. I did like the heroine Rosamund Smythe. This is a “best friend” trope, sweet romance. There were several plot points that were just not finished that left me feeling a lack in the story line. I normally read 1 book every 2 days, but this one took me 4 to get through. I probably won’t read more in this series.

This story pulled me into the characters lives and feelings. Even though Rose and Alex's families are at odds, Rose goes against her parents wishes to help out her old friend Alex. Things are not as they seem and Rose is more involved than she thought. As truths come out love will come through for these two. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.

An excellent historical romance. I really enjoyed the plot of this story. The characters were wonderful and the they re-ignited their love was a wonderful part of this book. Being married for almost 64 years now I can say being married to your best friend is marvelous. That makes this story relevant to my own life, thank you, Jack.
