When being different leads to the best years of your life.

There are three key components required to get into the most prestigious, top spy school in the world:

Skills.
Strength.
Survival.

My name is Silver Spell Solange. No, I didn't plan for my initials to be the same rank needed to enter the spy school. But I would do anything to get into the one of a kind school. I have the magical capability of an Elemental Witch, the strength to kick anyone's ass, and quick problem-solving skills to get my teammates out of any jam. There’s only one small problem – the other 'S' I’m missing.

I'm not a part of the supernatural race.

After realizing the my only shot at my dreams is at the brink of extinction, I'm unexpectedly teamed up with a werewolf, a dragon, a fallen angel, and a hellhound. The four of them carry the assets and abilities I need to gain my spot into the Supernatural Spy School (SSS).

With the clock ticking and not much leg room for an SS score, I accept their bet, knowing I’ll easily handle whatever they request from me.

I didn't think their bet would lead me to date all four them.

It's time for me to buckle up. This four-year roller coaster is about to begin, and its a bumpy one-way ticket to becoming the next "supernatural" spy.

First of all this is not a uni-kitten but a caticorn. As the Mother of Unicorns, they're basically relatives so I would know, and if you say otherwise I will have my babies fart glitter in your sorry faces.

Secondly, the book was more entertaining than I thought it would be.

Yumoyori Wilson has great imagination. She has the best ideas, the best blurbs and a really joyful way of telling stories. And while she tends to add dramatic background her characters, her books are always sparkly, colorful and happy, a breath of fresh air.

Unfortunately, while her universes are on point, her characters never seem to evolve. They stay the same, blushing dummies, teens stuck in adult bodies with the exact same relationships with each other. And it's a pity, really, but not for her; Yumoyori Wilson did something we wish we all could do: she wrote the stories she wanted to read.

S.S.S: Year One was entertaining, albeit a bit long. It has lots of cute moments, was fast paced some times, slow paced some others, with a bit of action along the way. The romance started instantly but took a chiller note afterwards and felt less forced. It had a few plot holes -some of them a bit confusing- and felt kind of dragging at some point but was overall a pretty nice read.

But kudos to all the stupid characters in the book that were able to attend a very elitist school in the first place!

OK, so I tried out another of Song’s books, hoping I’d be able to give a higher rating.

No dice.

I really wanted to enjoy all these books which sound like they should be right up my alley, but while the premise is good, the execution brings it down, and the patchy plot at best is the final nail in the coffin.

The heroine of this, Silver Spell Solange, is a special-snowflake type, just like the other heroine of the other novel I read of hers: Blazing Academy. She has powerful magic, and apparently boys think she’s hot on sight – they even say it straight to her face, like all of them do. I found it kinda hard to go along with that for the most part, especially since they all spiral quickly into calling each other beautiful in one way or another. Insta-lust, I can handle, Insta-love, not so much, especially when at 18% in there’s already talks of dating and going the extra mile for someone on the quest because of that and they’ve known each other for what… a few minutes?

The first conversations between the characters sound forced for some reason I can’t quite put my finger on. Maybe because it’s how seamlessly they seem to blend together, always knowing what to say, ‘bantering’ with each other even after only knowing each other for a short while…? That might be it. The main male leads think she’s ‘intriguing’ and if that doesn’t smell like a cliché I don’t know what does. I can handle that usually, just not on top of everything else that’s going down in this book.

The main characters are adults. They seem like children, they often act like children – if children occasionally have moments of profound wisdom and enjoy monologuing for at least half a page, that is. It made me want to rip my hair out – and sadly, I don’t have the silvery hair which sometimes has shades of turquoise and white.

While I can appreciate weird and wonderful natural hair colours – that’s a lie, I love them – the fact that Silver’s silver hair is rare and she has wonderfully blue eyes on top of that makes me want to roll my eyes. Typical. It’s no wonder everyone thinks she’s hot and intriguing. Even her ex wants to get her back.

But something which irked me from the offset is that it’s stated that states and even entire countries have been renamed – and I’d presume for a while. But about two pages later someone’s accent is being described as being African. Shouldn’t it be different… you know, since Africa’s name was changed, ergo I’d have assumed the root of that would’ve been changed… but nope. Japan is still Japan, etc. It was inconsistent, and it was really off-putting solely because I noticed it immediately and it doesn’t fit. It sticks out. There’s no point in changing the names of places only to do that, unless there were only a few names of places changed - but if that's the case I didn't get the clarification.

Like with the last book there were references scattered here and there. Tales like Narnia and the Hunger Games, and I was envisioning this being set a while in the future. So why do people like books which would be considered ‘old’? There should have been newer books out by that point in time, which would have made more sense for the world – though not the audience, I guess, unless they were described somewhat. They piled up on top of one another, with there being a professor whose name is ‘Nutella’ with references to that product and then another called ‘Thanos’ with plenty of references to the marvel franchise. I wouldn’t have minded one or two, but there were just too many.

This brings me onto another point – Silver is a Teacher’s Pet for all intents and purposes. The academic staff seem to like her. She stands up for Mr Thanos when children – sorry, adults – start making fun of his name. She and Harem Member A are the only ones to complete a trial on the first day of class, and she comes across as being a bit smug about it. She doesn’t seem to fail at anything, which really makes it predictable. She doesn’t fall short, and we rarely ever see her training her powers and mastering them slowly. There’s just an exceptional amount of time skips, especially in semester two – whose focus seems to be on the sex, with an occasional temper tantrum thrown in from the wonderfully adult Silver.

To be honest, I felt like the sex wasn’t necessary. Those scenes were cringe inducing at best, especially with all the dialogue and the copious amount of shouting each other’s names. If you had de-aged the characters a bit, removed the smut and slowed the romance down just a smidgeon, stuck in an actual plot aside from ‘I wanna get into the super cool spy school’ – which was swiftly accomplished in a matter of chapters – and then ‘survive at the spy school’ which is the overarching plot across all books I believe, then I think I might have actually given this book a better rating.

Something else I’m only just realising is the fact that both of Song’s books which I’ve read have the dreaded info dumps – mainly via characters talking and spilling information about their shifter kind or someone else’s shifter kind. There’s no real exploration deeper into things, nor is it all that engaging.

The justice system doesn’t seem that great, and despite the fact we know that the good guys don't always win in real life there was just a little niggling sensation throughout the book which seemed to whisper 'this doesn't seem right', (I'm not too sure whether it was about the way in which it was presented though or whether something was missing though, so perhaps that's on me for not getting it) which is another thing which irritates me since I rather like believable world building, given I believe this is set sometime a while after the supernatural have come into being – given at least both her parents were mages – so I’d have been hoping for stricter policies and laws in most places, as well as the capabilities of say, searching for evidence involving missing persons, as well as providing protection for certain groups of shifters who are at risk, but no. Maybe it was behind the scenes, and not really mentioned but still there? Though given the patchy plot, I’m not holding out too much hope.

There weren’t even any policies at the school trying to minimise the loss of life, nor reduce bullying and assault. It felt like a lawless place, if I was perfectly honest, and given how it’s meant to be a civilised community – and the school is meant to create spies who help and protect people – it was… kind of ridiculous. Actions are meant to have consequences, and you’re not supposed to be able to hide behind the S.S.S. graduate/student card. Secrets do tend to come out. People notice things, and skeletons in closets have ways of coming to light.

Similarly to the last book of Song’s I read, there was also all these heart-to-heart and touching moments… which really fell flat because of how they were delivered. Everyone seems to spill all their life history to each other without reservation, even if it should be a painful memory or two, which doesn’t feel natural in the slightest. You’ve known them for what? A few hours and you’re already spilling private information about yourself? It circles back to the point from earlier – it’s unnatural the way they all blend together seamlessly without any real conflict.

Looking back at what I said about this book having some contradictions… there’s more than I’d like. Silver says she doesn’t like violence – how wonderful – but she’s gone straight to attacking a person who admittedly was trying to harm someone else, but still… Not to mention how she lectures the woman who tries to sleep with these men who would otherwise attack her – I get she is trying to make a point, but the way in which she goes about it… Ugh.

Silver annoys me as a character, if I’m being honest. She doesn’t have flaws, at least, none that I’ve seen, aside from about two childish temper tantrums and immediate apologies after, and it feels to me as though she’s always riding her high horse. I’ve noticed this in reviews of her other books which I’ve checked before determining which of the books I wanted to read. Song’s characters tend to preach. This book is no different. Silver likes preaching to people about what they should do, which spills into monologues, whether they be about why a woman should stop trying to sleep with men who admittedly don’t have good intentions, or why black feathers are pretty rather than being disgusting, or monologuing about how it’s good to move on from things.

To sum things up…

If you like ‘strong’ female protagonists who have an insta-harem without jealousy, are relatively overpowered, like preaching about their lives and giving horribly sweet motivational speeches to everyone, and if you like books which are short with relatively no plot, then this might be the book for you.

If you like plot, 3D characters with whom you can relate with, characters who act their age, background characters who have more of a point than to simply insult or betray the main characters or just be doofuses in general or simply be there to make the lead set look good, and if you dislike cringing at everything characters say, then this probably isn’t the book for you.

Here’s to hoping I haven’t chargrilled things, but I kind of want those four or so hours I took to read this back.

It’s safe to say I won’t be reading another of Song’s books anytime soon.

Where can I get a fucking uni-kitten?

S.S.S: Year One was a pretty cute little reverse harem book. Silver and the guys started off not knowing each other and then forming a team at this spy academy. From there, they all wanted to date her and she's all like - why the hell not? Of course everyone looked at them weird.. plus it didn't help that her creepy ex douche of a boyfriend went to the same spy academy. Also, her ex two faced friend was there as well.

If I said I was shocked about her ex boyfriend and ex best friend ending up together - I would be lying. They seemed perfect for one another.. and I hated them both. Especially her ex towards the end. He was ruthless and gave zero fucks about killing people. Heck, he killed his own team.. by having them kill one another. Again, I hate him.

Now the guys are all shifters -- each one different. There's a dragon, werewolf, hellhound, and a fallen angel. Now Silver was just a boring old mage. She was frowned upon because she wasn't a shifter - basically a mundane human with cool ass magic powers. Typical shit.

Then she started to gain their powers - which I think is pretty cool. With each step of them getting closer to on another she's becoming a bad ass shifter. I'm liking the little teasing moments but I kind of want more to happen in this said harem. Kisses and more. Lots of more.

If I find the next book is available on KU, I will definitely dive into it.

I listened to this book in audiobook format.
Oh my! I got more than I expected when I purchased SSS year one.. This reverse harem supernatural romance wasn't smutty. There were real connections and there was definitely romance. The story actually had a great plot and the group were a support group for each other, showing genuine caring and love be that in a platonic way (between the males) and a romantic way, with Silver.

I really liked the fact that as well as the characters being various kinds of shifters, they are also a wonderful mix of races.

Lacy Laurel did a good job with the narration, showing an impressively consistent between many characters. My only gripe is that I disliked one of the main characters voice.

I look forward to listening to year two.

Silver is a witch with the dream to attend the S.S.S. (Supernatural Spy School). The problem is that they only accept shifters and she isn't one. Silver applies anyway and leaves her shifter status blank. When she and her team of 4 hunky shifters pass an impossible acceptance trial, she is surprised to be admitted into the school and she even gets to keep her supportive team. They face several more trials before the end of the year including facing off against Silver's douchy exboyfriend.

There were a few things about this first book that bugged me but not enough to make me want to quit reading it. For example, the author made a big deal of gifting the group with a powerful token as a reward for passing one of their first trials, only to never have the group use it in the 500 pages following. Little things like that are a pet peeve of mine. I did like the characters but they need a little more depth. Silver is powerful but naive; however, her naivete isn't annoying....yet. And then there are the guys - all powerful shifters that despite the darkness in their pasts are sweet and shy. It's all a little too perfect for me. Luckily there are plenty of characters outside their group that are perfectly bad to balance them out. I like the premise and I'm willing to read book 2 to see if things improve.

*To anyone who's never read Avery Pheonix, Avery Song, or whatever new name she's using now...BE ADVISED :

───────✧❁✧───────
CHECK TO SEE IF THE SERIES OF BOOKS YOUR INTERESTED IN READING IS A COMPLETED SERIES B4 STARTING DO NOT GET UR HOPES UP WAITING FOR A NEW BOOK IN A SERIES TO COME OUT! ESPECIALLY ANYTHING OLDER/UNDER ANY OF HER PRIOR "AUTHOR NAMES" IT MOST LIKELY ISN'T
HER MOST UP TO DATE AUTHOR NAME IS ☆AVERY STONE☆

───────✧❁✧───────
♥︎ {AVERY SONG & AVERY PHOENIX Are her prior/older Author Names.
If the authors name on the series is either of those & not "Avery Stone," check to see if series is completed if not understand peior that you wont get an ending to any incomplete series under those names.

☆ ════⋆★⋆ ═════ ⋆★⋆ ════ ☆
◆ If the Authors name is "AVERY STONE," this is her new author name & some books/series are still being released to complete the series. So make sure to check the authors name, especially since there is always "AVERY" & all her book covers/cover photos all look so alike & have the same exact style. You can't differentiate unless you're looking at the entire authors name!*}

☆ ════⋆★⋆ ═════ ⋆★⋆ ════ ☆
★ For info on release dates under her newest author name of "Avery Stone," I would suggest following her Facebook Group Page for any updates. I follow & have asked about prior unfinished series under Song/Phoenix name & she's stated she won't be finishing the series without funds prior to writing the final book/s in the series!*)
☆ ════⋆★⋆ ═════ ⋆★⋆ ════ ☆

☆ This series (SSS Academy), along with others like (Tracker Hive Academy) + more - Are/Will never be completed!
The author tends to start series, write 4-7 books in the series, and then just stop. After a couple of series being incomplete, she changes her name and starts again. She just leaves so many series incompleted years and years later! & she acknowledged she won't complete them either.

☆ ════⋆★⋆ ═════ ⋆★⋆ ════ ☆
★ So be warned before reading any series of books! Don't say no one warned you before you wasted day/weeks+ reading 7 books in a series only to find out you'll never get an ending!

☆ ════⋆★⋆ ═════ ⋆★⋆ ════ ☆
☆ Her books are amazing, but you'll never get an ending to the stories. If you're okay with that, then proceed to read. If not, I'd find a different author or make sure the entire series is completed before starting to read the books.

☆ ════⋆★⋆ ═════ ⋆★⋆ ════ ☆
★ Don't get me wrong, as much as this drives me crazy I do absolutely LOVE Avery's writing. It's just extremely frustrating to read 7 books or 5 books only to not have an ending, wait 2 years only to find out the author says shes not writing anymore in the series unless she's has income from it somehow upfront...

☆ ════⋆★⋆ ═════ ⋆★⋆ ════ ☆
☆ However, ...none of her series ever gets finished! It's so frustrating to read 7 books and then nothing. It's been 2 yrs since I read the series, along with Tracker Hive & others not realizing NONE of them were completed. I waited cause sometimes u just have to wait for releases, but it's been 2 yrs now & and there's no update. No release date. She actually said she's not finishing SSS Academy unless people pay upfront for the book *BEFORE* she writes it!! Insane! I just can't read any more of her series unless there 100% completed series cause of this.

☆ ════⋆★⋆ ═════ ⋆★⋆ ════ ☆
★ She also changes her name whenever she's got too many series unfinished. She's done so 2X within the last 2 years alone & she did the same thing under Avery Song name & Avery Phoenix name. She now is under a difference. AVERY ..... name.

☆ ════⋆★⋆ ═════ ⋆★⋆ ════ ☆
☆ I'm unfortunately not the only one who's noticed either. It's rather sad actually cause she's a great writer, and I'd really love to know the dang ending and have it all come together! Especially cause with this series especially (SSS ACADEMY) several series are supposed to combine into one storyline. I've read every dangnabit series that goes along with this joining ... and most are incomplete series like this one. It's just very, very frustrating!

OMG this book is absolutely fantastic!!! From the very first page the story really sucks you in as you get to know Silver and all the amazing things that make her so remarkable. The writing is superb at really bringing the story to life and the dialogue had me laughing, getting mad, and all sorts of other emotions. I was totally immersed in this new world and I really did not want it to ever end yet alas I know it had to. For the record I so need a uni-kitten now!!! A total must read!!!! I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars!!!

Surprised by how much I enjoyed this.

I like a lot of reverse harems and this was 100% up there.

The whole background of the spy school was super interesting to me. Very interested in how this develops.

I'm not normally one for academy books, usually I find them rather tedious and 100% predictable. Well that just goes to show, that you should never judge a book by its cover genre or trope!

What can you say about a perfectly crafted world where you are immediately immersed in not only the characters but The Whole concept that is coming to life before our very eyes.

I always enjoy Yumoyori's worlds! Each and everyone that I've been lucky enough to visit, is so thorough, colourfull, fantastic and creative that I wish I could stay there forever. This new series of hers is no different. In fact it's probably one of the best I've been lucky enough to be in. There's little I can critique, the characters are three dimensional and as funny as they're fierce. I am so excited for what comes next. Follow along in Silver’s journey as she becomes the woman she always knew she could be....with a little help from her harem!!

This was a pretty cute RH. I loved the spy academy setting. Every one who knows me knows I love uni-kitties (or caticorns) so I was pretty pleased to find one in a book.

There's a unique assortment of shifters; dragon, werewolf, hellhound, and fallen angel. I loved watching Silver and her men work together as they navigate the school and their newfound relationship.

There's some excitement, action, and romance. It's definitely a fun book and i'm looking forward to the next one.

I've listened to Lacy Laurel before and loved her, this is no exception. She brings the stories to life.

It was fun to read but it seemed like a 15 years old wrote the book always fantasizing about her 'boyfriends'. Nobody seemed of their age it was YA read according to how each of them behaved.

**You can see this full review and more at Book Briefs: https://bookbriefs.net**S.S.S. Year One is the first book in the Supernatural Spy Academy series by Yumoyori Wilson. The Supernatural Spy Academy starts off with a really cool concept. With an origin of many super hero world stories, there was a change that spread throughout earth which changed people into witches and other supernatural creatures. The Supernatural Spy Academy is a prestigious school where shifters train to become spies. But witches have never graduated from the academy. This is something that our main character, Silver Spell Solange (see what the author did there with another SSS?) is hoping to change. She has always dreamed of graduating from the Academy, but getting in and staying in is no easy feat. Their entrance exam is essentially a dangerous magical quest, which you know is completely up my alley. Silver was a decent main character, and I am starting to warm up to her group of classmates/quest teammates. But honestly, some of their storylines felt a bit forced, and were a little off putting to me. This was much more of a plot driven novel for me, than it was a character driven novel. I loved the idea of this novel and I am super excited to see what adventures and mayhem await us in the next installment, but I am not completely sold on the characters or on the romance yet. I am going to hold out my thoughts on that until after I read the next book. (Which I know is really weird for me) In S.S.S. we meet Silver and her teammates, Dimitri, Yuriel, Ryuu, and Wolfgang. I think I like them all well enough, but I am interested in getting to know them much better (hopefully) in the next book. Overall, S.S.S has a very cool world set up and has the potential for some really exciting story lines, with four years at the academy, and I love the mix of shifters that the characters are. In our main little group we have a witch, a werewolf, a dragon, a fallen angel, and a hellhound. An interesting mix, right? I can't wait to see their dynamic grow and change as the books go on. I do hope that the plot picks up in pace a bit and the characters slow down a bit in the next book. I know that seems a bit strange, but I felt like the character relationships felt a bit rushed while some of the plot points dragged on a bit. I would like to see a better balance between the two next time. But other than that, this was a really solid start to what seemed like it will be a cool series. I can't wait to see where it goes next.

Silver Spell Solange has had a dream to attend the Supernatural Spy Academy (SSS) since she was a small child. One her beloved father encouraged before his death making it even more important to her now. Only Silver is a witch and the world's most prestigious spy school only accepts shifters. When Silver gets an invitation to try out for the SSS she is determined to be the first witch ever accepted. Joining up with a werewolf, a dragon, a fallen angel, and a hellhound Silver uses her strong magic to aid her team on their assignment. These five have an immediate bond and work well together deciding to be a team, date, and make sure they all make it through the four years together. Skills, Strength, and Survival. They will be tested but together, they can make it.

Let's go over the positives:
* The setting. An academy setting is always a great way to create quick relationships and create drama/action.
* The guys. The variety of the supernatural species is fantastic, their personalities are all wonderful, their strengths all add to the team, their backgrounds were interesting, their banter was funny, and they get along. I especially like the sniffing stalker and grumpy angel.
* The assignment. Their mission set up their story and bond perfectly.
*Silver's ex. An incubus makes for an easy to hate ex. This one was exceptionally easy to dislike.
* The siblings. Daichi. Great as a teacher, brother, and his storyline with Mitten. Such a cutie! Scarlet. Great sister.
*Silver's familiar. I WANT A UNIKITTY!

Now for the Okay:
*Silver. I loved when she was a fierce, confident witch. Her power seems unmatched. But her thoughts were repetitive and contradictory too often.
*The insta-relationship. Seemed a silly condition. I would have preferred it to move more naturally.
*Nikko. Just everything
*The formulaic writing. I know this formula has worked for Ms. Wilson before but I know she has more creativity. I'm fine with a basic formula but would have liked a little more variance.
*I am not a fan of the characters so casually getting wasted. It's immature and irresponsible. Relaxing to a couple drinks sure, tipsy sure, deliberately getting wasted, no. It always surprises me when this author who is so conscientious to bullying, sexual freedom, etc has no care about excessive drinking.

Overall, this book was fine. It didn't stand out and won't stick in my mind. It was a good diversion. With the characters it has great potential and I look forward to year two.

starts well but the last half is almost pure porn

I should have known what the book was going to be like when the heroine Silver blithely says, “Four big cocks are better than one, you know” to some other female students. If that sounds to you like an interesting conversation, you may enjoy this book. If not, just stop reading here. I kept reading, hoping that dialogue wasn’t typical for the book. Silly me.

The book’s setup sounded interesting: witch girl is trying to be the first non-shifter to attend a magical spy academy and a powerful group of males collects around her. Unfortunately the first issue I had was the type of relationship between Silver and her team members. The author justified the boys’ instant devotion by telling us that 1. Silver was powerful, 2. she was hot, and 3. they really liked the way she smelled. That’s it. Those three reasons were their whole justification for making Silver the center of their worlds. That’s just not good enough. And in my book, there’s never a good reason to write a story based on instalove (except fulfilling an author’s own fantasy).

Other issues: Character development was non-existent. Silver never turned into a real person, she was always the typical reverse harem trope of “Oh she’s a beautiful powerful sweet kind girl with some painful history who just wants the best for everyone”. Same for the guys—each one had a sad story to tell, then Silver kissed them all and made them feel better. The guys got along perfectly with no jealousy or misunderstandings, they loved Silver to pieces from the moment they met her and everyone worked hard to satisfy her every need. Really? It was such a boring way to structure their relationships and entirely too typical of most reverse harem stories.

The story was most interesting when it centered on the team’s classes, their challenges and getting to know one another...but that wasn’t enough of the book. Instead, about halfway through the book became more porn than anything else. Months of their school lives were skipped over, and sex scenes of Silver with various team members replaced the story. The ending was an improvement, as it detailed what happened during their first year final quest, but wasn’t enough to redeem the rest of the book.

SSS: Year One by Yumoyori Wilson is book one in the Supernatural Spy Academy Series that I listened to on audio narrated by Lacy Laurel.

This is the first book of Yumoyori’s that I have read and it definitely won’t be my last. I cannot wait until SSS: Year Two is released on audio. However, I may not be able to wait that long and will have to buy it on kindle or paperback.

Lacy did a great job narrating. I really enjoy her different voices she uses for each character. It makes it really easy to follow along with the storyline and it helps bring the story to life.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Supernatural Reverse Harems.

SSS – Supernatural Spy Academy: Year One is the introduction of a new series by Yumoyori Wilson. In this book I was introduced to Silver Spell Solange. She’s a witch with the dream to attend the SSS Academy. This school is for shifters only. Witches/Mages have attempted to attend in the past…and failed. But this is Silver’s dream and one that she told to her father before he took sick and passed away from a magical disease. Star has applied and the waiting is killing her, but this…this is going to be her year. Now, the trick will be disguising her humanity and working with the four shifters she teams up with. Striking a deal is the easy part – they agree to help on the condition she dates all four of them for the four years that they are at the academy. Sounds pretty easy right? Well…let the TRIALS begin!
SSS is an engaging novel right from the beginning! The author gives us Silver and her family and shows the dynamics not just there but with her best friend’s mother as well. I absolutely love the dynamics, relationships, and connections between them. It’s warm, comforting and loving. Silver is such an interesting character. She’s beautiful, but she’s not vain or arrogant about her looks. She’s a powerful witch and the author clues in readers as to how you can tell this by certain details concerning the character(s). I appreciate that, for the most part, we meet the guys one by one. I have to admit that I already have my favorites of the group.
I absolutely LOVE this book! Most books that I have read over the years tended to only focus on a couple of groups of shifters at a time. This author has taken on quite a daunting task of giving us several groups of shifters – vampires, angels, hellhounds, werewolves, succubi, incubi, cat shifters, dragons, and more. It’s almost enough to make your head spin from the eagerness of wanting to see them all and learn about them. This is part of what helps captivate me into this book because there are so many things going on, but while I say this it never becomes overwhelming.
I love and appreciate how easily and quickly Silver and the guys all get along with each other. There isn’t one male trying to be the alpha/top dog over everyone else. They all communicate with each other and seek to understand each other. Everyone has their secrets, things that they are keeping to themselves, but when you learn these things it just helps to build the character and your connection to each of them. I love how each one is so different from the other that helps to create something unique in comparison to the others. Shifters like to stay with their own, but these guys are bucking the “norm.”
As I said before I have my favorites already in this series – Dimitri and Yuriel. Dimitri is absolutely adorable! LOL! Yuriel is mysterious, but there is something more to him that calls to me. Star – the uni-kitty…I’m in love with her. Haha! I love kittens and thanks to this author I’m looking for one (a plush mind you. LOL) If I had to say that there was something I don’t like about this book it’s Silver’s “best friend.” We get flashbacks/memories for all of the characters and I have to say that I don’t think Nikko was ever truly Silver’s friend and this hurts my heart for her. But I’m kinda hoping that there will be some sort of redemption for her.
There is so much going on with this book and these characters that I could probably go on forever. LOL! But if you love paranormal academy books with reverse harems, unique characters, the right amount of humor sprinkled in, and some steamy scenes to make you drool then this is the book for you! I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I can’t wait to start the next book in this series, because it can only get better from here!

3.5 stars! I finished this book and wasn't quite sure what to say review wise. This Plot was on POINT! It was good, entertaining, most of it was fast paced enough to really keep me riveted and then there were certain times that things slowed down to a crawl. While puttering around trying to think of what really need to be said I started reading the reviews and found that someone already said everything I was thinking. That happens sometimes. At that point when you find that someone else said everything you were thinking and said it way better than you ever could have you just want to write a review that tags them in it and say : WHAT SHE SAID. lol. Since that's not really a thing I'll endeavor to write my own thoughts as they come.

Yumoyori Wilson is notorious in my book. She writes great series starters that usually hook me book one and then over the course of the series she completely looses me somewhere. This first book in the series was no different. This author has some great premise's and I love how she always throws some Asian flare in. The Romance is always fast to onset but then drags out during the whole "get to know you" phase. Story wise this book was just good. It has some unique points that set it apart from alot of the other "Academy" Novels I've read of late. Loved the plot here and so of course I'm super sucked in. The author always does a great job creating diversity in her characters but at the same time they do seem to be a little "too good" and have an unrealistic quality even with their tortured pasts.

Silver, our FMC, is a super talented witch with a heroine complex. Since she was little she has wanted to attend S.S.S academy and make the world a better place. Only problem is that S.S.S doesn't accept witches.. other supernaturals only. Having grown up on the outskirts never quite accepted because she was so powerful in her own right she dreams of being a part of the group. A valued member. To her surprise her dream comes true and she is given the chance to "audition" so to speak. Complete the mission for a chance to gain entrance to the school. Luckily for her she finds a pretty great team of diverse shifters that give her a shot as a team mate.. with the condition that once they pass she will date them. lol. After completing the almost impossivle mission no team has ever completed before she finally gets her chance. The item she retrieved in the mission however has a little bit of a mind of its own.. and not everyone is so accepting here at S.S.S academy and Silver finds she must rely on her team for more than just missions. They become her new family and since this artifact seems to have a way bigger purpose than just academy its pretty good she has some guys who are in her corner...

Super cute story. Silver as a character was great strong, sassy, and well rounded with her own troubled past creating its own vulnerability. I'm scared to continue though as my track record with this author is super sucked in and then almost DNF the series at book 4 or 5.. Hopefully this won't be the case this go round! Looking forward to the release of book 2.

As of right now, having just finished the book, I'm undecided whether I'll read the next one. I probably will if it isn't as long as this one. I'm not sure the way she condensed the whole year into one book is something I'd want to read again.

I liked parts of this book a lot; however, overall, I wasn't that sucked in. There were parts of this story that seemed like they moved extremely quickly, but then other parts moved so slowly. Parts of the relationship just seemed to pop into existence, kind of unrealistically, such as the guys deciding they all wanted to date the FMC within the first hour of having met her and in exchange for helping her complete the challenge to get into the school.

This book was about their whole first year in the academy, but I'm not sure the format worked for me. There were periods of time the author wrote about, but then would skip weeks into the future. I barely have any idea about the characters' actual education beyond the classes their first day of school. What actually happened during the year is glossed over and the relationship is the focus. I might have liked it a lot better had this book not been almost 600 pages. That's a lot of pages for me to still not have a clear picture of the school year.

I expect a book like this to put more emphasis on the environment than it did, because it is a fantasy book. I always expect this level of emphasis on the relationship in a contemporary book.

I did enjoy reading about the relationship among the five once it got started. The interactions among them were great, a lot of teasing and fun and also serious feelings. I also loved the uni-kitten's antics and that Silver got over Nikko and Callister very quickly. The action of the final trial was great as well, I just wish there'd been more of them working together in action situations.

I have been on such a huge academy kick the last couple of week and I am loving them! This one was really good. Not my favorite but I did enjoy it. I love that Silver is a witch. I love that she is the first witch to be in SSS. I think that is going to make this series so interesting. I also LOVE her guys. Each guy was so unique. And hellooo we get a freaking hellhound! I am beyond excited about that! The only thing that was a negative for me was the way the book skipped most of the first year. I understand there is only so much you can do in the first year and the author wrote the most important things but I just feel like I missed alot. But I am still excited for Year Two and to see her relationships and her powers grow!

Lacy Laurel narrated this book and she is one of my absolute favorites. She has a way of making each character come to life and she gives them each a voice. It's fantastic

A great start

This was an amazing start to a Supernatural Spy School that trains its students to become the best in the world. Sliver Solange has always wanted to be a spy but being a witch she is unable to attend as she's not a shapeshifter but through determination and the help of her new teammates slash boyfriends she'll give it her everything she has. I loved the Characters I found them to be fresh and unique, with great personalities. The storyline is great and I will be moving on to the next one to read more about Silver and her the boys and hopefully learn more about her Ring.

Great plot, interesting characters, humorous dialogue.

I enjoyed the insta-friendship in this one. It was nice for the main character, who had such a crappy childhood, to finally have friends she could trust. The romance wasn't quite as instant, but still happened pretty quickly. I felt like the author pulled it off well without it seeming like a trope.

The whole spy thing combined with the academy setting was fun. The various types of supernaturals kept it interesting.

I look forward to more of the series!

Long, but worth it.

When I first started reading this I wasn’t sure whether I’d like it, but after Silver’s first encounter in the alley I knew that I wanted to continue.

Silver is a semi-complicated character who has a kind soul and an open heart. Her guys are each wounded souls in their own way, just like she is, and I liked the way they opened up to each other, well Silver, about their struggles. There are two characters who look like they’re going to be the antagonists for the book (if not the series), but it didn’t work out the way I thought it would. The final action scenes at the trial were great, very fast paced, action packed and emotional, but it’s the last scene in the book that really throws the reader a curveball and ensures that you’ll be picking up book two.

The Quick and Dirty: Silver is an extraordinarily powerful witch who is trying to get into a school meant only for supernaturals. When she gets her acceptance letter, she knows she's going to have to bust her butt to prove herself, especially when she'll have to contend with her ex who also attends. She may have a little help though; in the form of 4 hot and very protective shifters.

I think this may be my favorite @yumoyoriwilson series to date! This book feels quintessentially Yumoyori. Her books are a special concoction of fun and whimsical with some dark and twisted thrown in. I love that she's able to transition easily between light and fluffy to some really tough and heavy material without sacrificing the identity of the book. I don't have a single thing to complain about with regard to the characters - they were all uniquely interesting and their relationship felt organic. The storyline, particularly as the antagonist got more involved kept my rapt attention. SSS Year 1 is a book that is addicting to read, filled with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat and I can NOT wait to get my hands on the next few books (out already)!!

Surprisingly good and predictably sigh-worthy. Both at the same time.

I developed a pretty small but long history with RH genre. It's a niche and specific and weird enough I stumbled upon it and alternatively avoid but don't entirely give up. Having your lead try their hand with multiple partners can be entertaining and pretty romantic, not to mention refreshing after reading a whole book centred around an indecisive character that just CAN't untangle their love triangle/square or whatnot. They have, in my mind, a lot of potential pitfalls (every genre does but this one, at least the book I read, tend to fall into them far too often) but I had a whole... well, it was kind of just one series but it had a kick-ass heroine with several cool guys that sold me on the whole idea and... I guess I am chasing that feeling ever since, no matter how much times has passed and my tastes changed.

I am not entirely clueless though also not very experienced - read a gay harem with 8 love interests (no, that's not a typo) but I could count the overall number of series on all of my fingers (probably) so I was left with a lot of prejudice but little to make any generalizations.

That's just to explain where is this review coming from and what are my personal biases (which seems sensible when wanting to make a good argument and don't feel like a jerk for saying not-so-nice things).

Because this series is one of the best (but also pretty bad) series of RH I had the (mis)fortune to encounter.

The main reason I even finished this series and am still reading it may simply be all those unfulfilled expectations - basically, those pitfalls I mentioned? This series is making a really, really good job of navigating around so many of them it made me feel it's way better than it otherwise would.

Basically, Silver is strong but human and sensitive, she's kicking ass and saving others (for which she should get a medal) seriously, having more than 2 guys as love interests have this weird effect of scrambling female brain to the point of letting those sexy, muscly, sinful, charming, irresistible pieces of walking wet dreams that are MC's in RHs do all the work. And not just in bad.

So Silver gets a lot of bonus points for: owning a business, being to one to get them out of jams, being a leader, being smart and strong and have lots of mana and getting even more badass as the time goes on while having all those moments of past catching up to her and building bridges and stuff.

And the L-interests are also somehow maintaining (mostly) that seemingly impossible combination of being original and understanding and supportive (as opposed to All of them just a different model of the same, overbearing and bossy).

And you really have to give it to her for the whole introduction of the RH. Really. Because I (we? there are) many instances where you have this amazing and so original and just breath-taking trope or element or plot twist or plot BUT you somehow... don't actually know how to make it work in a book. And this is definitely needed in RH - because hello, you kind of have to explain why a bunch of guys would be okay dating the same chick? Unless you're going for porny, it which case it just happens.

But here? Oh no, why explanation? Why make some elaborate excuses and why should it make sense? No doing that here, oh no. Minutes after getting the whole group together, they just announce it and... basically, that's it! There are some absurd excuses (which I would rather ignore) because overall, they just make it happen and agree on and that's it. It's kind of brilliant.

That's it for the major cookie points.

There is, unfortunately, the point of style. And some not so cool stuff. Like names. Do not let me start on those. Though I am going to.

Basically, writing is like... about pretty. It's art so writing carries that certain implication that is 98% present, that the words will flow and it will show in the language and I can usually point to at least one sentence or a few paragraphs or something that make me think of art and prettiness... which is a long way to say this is a book and it has plot but it's kind of like normal kind of storytelling you might hear from kind of any normal person.

Now, this style may not be too much a problem and you can just accept it as a specific style. For me, it was not exactly this case. And it really showed and I really noticed. It starts with a simple thing like Silver Spell. That's the MC name. She has silver hair. And she's a mage. Silver. Spell. I am not sure I am conveying how sigh-worthy that sounds. It's what I might have used as a name tag. If I was a ten year old girl. Playing a mage. With silver hair. Simple things can sound cool. They can.

There is the matter of uni-kitten but I am a cat person and I am not unbiased so while she may be shedding glitter and fighting with rainbow beams, she's a cat so I am gonna accept her cuteness as described and witnessed.

The guys looks are also attempting to be way too unique and I forgot how they looked about a second after their description. It's not like you need to their hair colour and I have no idea why American (is she?) authors think knowing he's 6'2') is just something I should know about my characters =D.

We also have Wolfgang which is useful as a way to remember this guy is a werewolf but not so much if you don't want me doing mental facepalm anytime I realize it's actually his name. Supernatural Spy School is also very straightforward though I do like Ryu's and Yuri's names.

It carries on to the dialogues that are also pretty descriptive and I sometimes skim when one character goes on to this speech thing - it's basically motivational speaking. Nice, just too long. The wittiness is better, though it doesn't always (usually) meet the mark of making ME think "oh that's clever/perceptive".

And let's mention the sex scenes. Not enough of them (thank goodness) but I am not feeling the vibes and it kind of tends to consist of some description with a lot of "Silver!" "NameOfTheGuySheIsWith!". Also some "harder!" and stuff, just to adhere to the more expected exclamations.

Not my most favourite (or the best feature) of the book(s).

Style is, I am afraid, a whole book and series element and I like my books at least somewhat under the general definition of literature as art but that's just my preference and writing in "nice words" is only part of the whole writing process.

It also Rh and it has, naturally, taken the Chosen One route, where MC is becoming a very special snowflake (not necessarily bad) so she was a mage but (I don't think it's spoiler when it's so obvious) she will also be an angel and hellhound and werewolf and dragon. A real one of a kind. And she is, of course, dating a dragon prince and fallen angel (rare stuff) with a sad past and an elemental werewolf, not the normal kind.

It's also not above a few high school tropes, not too much, thankfully, but Silver is fabulous and has 4 boyfriends so other students are mostly this half jealous half admiring mass and she has bitchy ex-friend and a lame but manipulative ex-boyfriend who wants her back so there are some satisfaction games that should make you feel nice about Silver being more fabulous than those two losers. There is some level of compassion, so I am not complaining too much.

So what am I getting at with this whole too-long review? Nothing in particular actually. If you made it here, you should now be able to tell whether this sounds like something you might like.

Generally speaking, this series seems to have some very strong points and some pretty weak ones and it's up to you which ones you will have a problem with - I can only say you might try.

There are several supernatural species (cause 4 guys have to be each special) and you have mana (and it's in a book not a game, cool) and kind of science start for a supernatural environment and of course, it's also about spying and being a capable, influential adult.

3.5 stars not exactly about the school

I do like this book, but there were some things that I did have problems with.

First Silver is a bit Mary Sue, everything goes well for Silver, everyone but her enemy loves Silver, she can do no wrong. That doesn’t mean bad stuff hasn’t happened to Silver, it has, but she is still very Mary Sue, goody two shoes. However, for this type of book I enjoyed the lightness.

As to the harem, the guys are sweet and adorable but it was just too easy how they all got together, and just fit right together with barely any conflict. I still like them.

But the problems is this series is called Supernatural Spy School, right and yet the majority of the stuff going on IN school is glossed over, told in past tense, and just not lived or experienced WITH Silver. This is what I call, telling vs showing. The school classes and learning about shifters and Silver’s magic would be nice. Seeing the exams is good and we did have some of them, but the final exam at the end, we glossed over a good portion of the mission! I don’t understand why. There were many things told in remembrance rather than on page and living the action while it happened. I am not a fan.

I love uni-kitty Star she’s cute. But I’m wondering if it’ll be addressed why she is popping up. I also think it’s silly to have the ring as a plot device to get Silver what she needs but not look into ANY information regarding the ring, seems pretty...forgetful for people who are to be observant, and you know spies.

It’s honestly mostly about the relationship than the schools. At least in this book. It’s not bad, it’s a nice light and fluffy aside from the thins in Silver’s past.

Also her bff Nikko or how you spell it, I’m not a fan. I think she’s a really bad friend, and clearly wasn’t actually there for Silver.

Also to note there are SEVERAL typos in this book and could use a nice comb through to pick them up. Like your when it was supposed to be you when Professor Xin is talking to Silver. Things like that.

Wow

Wilson never fails to amaze me with her intricate world building, in depth plots and fantastic characters. While there is a similarity to her stories (you know the same author penned them) they each stand alone in terms of breadth and narrative. This one, a first person, single POV RH, ventures further into the academy genre, inviting lovers of paranormal of get sucked into a school for gifted spies. It’s unique, rather heartwarming and just as detailed as anything Wilson writes.

Pros:
- It’s long! Almost 600 pages. There were at least 2 solid breaks before the end, points where I could see a lesser book finding it’s HFN, but not this one. No, it’s like 3 book in 1 with the culmination happening at the end of the year.
- Love Silver, she’s strong and determined.
- Guys are sweet.

Cons:
- Little too lengthy in parts, with almost filler pages (not too much though).
- One scene bothered me where Silver proved catty in her revenge... which seemed beneath the character she had been portrayed to be.

I would give this 2.5 stars because the novel is so riddled with grammatical and editing errors that it was difficult to stay in the story. The story, minus the gratuitous graphic sexual content, was intriguing. A team of 5 ppl who randomly met on the first day of school become friends/family and dominate their student competition and villains because of it. The hero characters were interesting and sympathetic. The villains were appropriately vile. I was irked by their continual failure to focus on the important life stuff that a professor warned them about, though I'll cut them some slack because they had class for 12 hours a day and still had homework and life after.

I was also extremely vexed by the timeline, so much so that I will now spend 2 paragraphs describing the issue. There were many, many, many pages dedicated to 3 consecutive days and then a huge 11-week jump. The "recap" of what happened in those 11 weeks was choppy and dropped like breadcrumbs in the preparation leading up to the end of semester dance. There could have been a few paragraphs saying "over the following weeks, this generally happened, and then the semester was over and we had triumphed." But no. It was messy and awkward. Furthermore, the author's use of bold font and incorrect signposts was confusing. On page 496, it says "SEMESTER ONE END" which made me think the novel was OVER, as in THE END. But then I turn the next page and lo and behold, there's more! Then the second semester begins and the focus is on day 1 and then suddenly it's the final exam for the whole year and the book ends on page 664.

So, to recap on the atrocious timeline: the first 3-4 days take up 469 pages, and about a week later, a single afternoon folding laundry scene that takes up 27 pages. Then the "semester one end" signpost happens on page 496, followed in the next chapter by "eleven weeks later" and 81 pages covering 2 evenings out with the guys before winter break. Aren't those part of semester 1? So semester 1 takes up 576 pages. Semester 2 begins on page 577, after the 3-week winter break and takes up only 87 pages. First semester gets 576 pages, and second semester gets 87 pages! In those 87 pages, there is a recap of how Silver got sick over break and hasn't seemed to recover completely, and the first day of school ends 30 pages later (p. 607). There's a 17-page training session for Silver that takes place that first week of school (p.624), and then "eleven weeks later" the final exam takes up the next 40 pages and ends the novel on page 664. I felt so incredibly cheated by this hurried and unbalance approach. Not only was there very little character development, but those time jumps/gaps create holes in the plot. I have so many questions about what is going on with the characters, both good and bad.

Then there is more confusion caused by the bold font used in the Final Analysis Report of Silver's first year.

Despite these timeline issues and the numerous, pervasive, and glaring editing issues, I will read the next novel to see what happens with the important life stuff they failed to research. This world intrigues me.
