I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

A man is going through a tough time the last couple of years. His son died, and his wife disappeared, and things went downhill from there.

A psychic shows up at his door, claiming the body of his wife is in a nearby canal. Is she right? is she a real psychic or a fraud? What is going on?

Fairly good British style psychological thriller.

This was a truly interesting book for me. I saw it listed in a Goodreads Giveaway which I won. The synopsis intrigued me. I’m a believer who has a healthy amount of skepticism. I have gone to readers, though not psychic ones, and have been impressed by a couple. The rest either entertained me or tried to scam me. Psychics have been my dream. I would love to go to one but the ones I have come across aren’t the real deal, in my opinion. So this book hooked me even before I opened it. I wasn’t disappointed by the story. I think the author did a phenomenal job with the subject. Why only four stars since I clearly love the story? I had a hard time following the story at times. It’s not bad, (one thing for American readers, the book is set in England. The English used is not American so please keep in mind the words are not wrong, just different.), but the way the scenes changed was jarring for me. I would be totally engrossed and suddenly, with no warning, the scene shifted. It brought me out of the story every time. I wish the author had used a symbol or something to give a signal that a shift was happening. There was also a chapter that I had no idea who it was about. I still am not certain. This bothers me. I kept going though and am happy I did. I would encourage anyone finding these a bit difficult to continue reading. The story is an intriguing tale. It has so many things to think about and discuss. The psychic is only one part. Equally important is the story of betrayal between people who should care for one another. The murder mystery even pales in comparison with the story of betrayal at the this level. This book was a delightful surprise for me. I hope it will be for you too.

Atheist Michael Walker's 6 year old son died in a hit and run accident. The driver was never found. Now his wife has disappeared. In his despair, he goes to see a performance at a run down hotel by a medium. After the show, the medium shows up at his apartment claiming that his wife was murdered and the medium knows where her body lies. Was Suzanne Walker really murdered?

As the facts are revealed, more questions arise than answers. How did Suzanne die? Every character is implicated in her disappearance and/or is hiding a dark secret of their own. The author weaves multiple suspects and scenarios into the story. Midway through the book, the reader cannot eliminate anyone.

This British author's previous novel (The Return) was set in the US, and his vernacular and references were way off. This novel is set in Great Britain, so the vernacular and references were unknown to this American reader. Therefore, it was not a distraction. However, the book seemed hurriedly and sloppily written. There was a noticeable number of typographical errors. There was also a scene between the two brothers that was described as happening under a tree in the rain, but ended on a floor. Michael's parents are also introduced late in the story, and their lifestyle and home don't quite seem to fit into the characters or the story.

In the end, this author has interesting and suspenseful plots that overcome the deficiencies. I highly recommend this author, and look forward to reading his other books.

Goodreads Giveaway. Michael has been having two bad years. Beloved six-year old Jason was killed in an unsolved hit and run sending he and Suzanne, his wife, into a downward spiral. Then just before Christmas the following year, the grieving mother disappears. Michael's stability...both emotional and financial is hanging by fraying threads when he receives a late night door knock. Local medium Jackie Wallace claims her visions indicate Suzanne is a murder victim and rests in a nearby canal. Although the police take no action, newspaper funding of a new search recover her body. The ensuing investigation reveals disturbing clues that point to betrayals very close to home. This was an engaging mystery with good character development and the medium's role was presented very plausible. Unexpected late plot twists really built the suspense. I would definitely read more of this author's work.

I received this from a Goodreads Giveaway.

I really enjoyed this book. It had a few twists and kept me glued to it, when I had time to read. The author really took you into the whole Medium, Psychic thing.

Michael and Suzanne Walker lost their son 1 year ago and are having a hard time coming to terms with it. He was killed by a hit and run at only 6. One night Suzanne goes out and never returns. Michael is an atheist and doesn't believe in the afterlife. A medium shows up at his house and tells him she knows where Suzanne is. This starts the twist. What happened to Suzanne? Who killed their child? What will Michael find out? Will it change his views?

A good book that will keep you guessing until the end. Happy Reading 😊

The Medium by David Hatton is a really good read with just the right amount of suspense to keep me interested all the way through.
After the death of their 6 year old son, Michael and his wife, Suzanne are struggling. She attends a show given by psychic medium, Jackie Wallace, and when Suzanne disappears during the intermission, he attempts to find her with the aid of the medium herself.
As with every good suspenseful mystery, everyone has a secret and they often set themselves up to look guilty.
This is a really interesting portrayal of grief, hope, and the ends some will go to to hide their secrets.

This book provides readers a somewhat quirky and twisty crimes to be solved story. Multiple victims and suspects are identified as this British mystery challenges readers to follow presented leads.
Good storyline and interesting characters create a worthwhile and recommendable read. 4 stars.

My thanks to goodreads and the book's giveaway sponsors for the opportunity to obtain and read a copy of this book.

Good read with some fun twists!

I love a paranormal element to any book, so this one definitely had me hooked from the start. I thought I had it figured out....only to find out I was wrong. I liked the characters and even found myself liking the characters that probably didn't deserve being liked, due to the things they did. I definitely hope to read more from this author!!! Thank you.

Deceit or truth

An exciting story of how a person in distress can be easily duped. I had wondered about the outcome, but wasn't entirely convinced until the end. I received this book from Goodreads for free.

Yet another gripping novel

Just like with The Return I was hooked into the plot and always expecting the unexpected. A great subject and some nice plot twists.

Jackie Wallace is a semi-famous medium whose shows intrigue those trying to get in touch with their passed loved ones. One fateful night, this includes Suzanne Walker who is hoping to hear from the young child she lost. During the show she attends -at an intermission- Suzanne disappears.

Her husband, Michael, is frantic looking for his wife. The two have been drifting apart since the loss of their child, but someone thinks they know where she is – the medium, Jackie.

As the two look into the disappearance of Suzanne, family secrets are exposed as the story gets media attention and everyone is thrust into the spotlight. Danger starts to lurk around every corner and the question of what happened to Suzanne will have effects on everyone – and everyone is a suspect.

This was actually a very interesting suspense thriller. If you like Ruth Ware, you’ll find enjoyment in this book that has good suspense and characters that are looking for answers and in the meantime do everything they can to destroy their lives.

Jackie is an interesting character and her shows are portrayed in the novel like ones we all know well from television series of the same topic. Some of the characters are hiding some big secrets and it was interesting to find them out.

The ending comes with a good twist.

After reading the Return last year, I was excited to read David Hatton’s second book - and I was not disappointed... The medium is just as much of a page turner. It has so many twists and turns that even Jackie Wallace couldn’t predict what was going to happen next! I especially loved this book because it is such a divisive topic and always gets people debating on either side - a great read for a book club... highly recommended. Keep ‘em coming Mr Hatton!

One of the worst books I have ever read and I have read a lot in my life. Adjectives everywhere, full of description of every piece of furniture in a room, no suspense, predictable . I started noting every awful piece of dialogue but so many I gave up. Full of spelling mistakes. Glad it was free as I would have wanted my money back. I hope never to read anything by this author again.

Enjoyable

This is the second book I have read by this author and I feel this is much better than the first. I had to keep reading it although I thought the ending was odd ,in that it just didn't ring true. I won't give it away , strange things do happen, I suppose.
