Valerie Grace isn't quite sure how she went from heavenly angel to plunging into the killer whale tank at Niagara Falls' MarineLand, but that's what's happened. All she knows is that earth can be a tough place for a fallen angel, what with all the demon Tempters lurking around every corner, anxious to recruit her to the "other team" - the evil team. All she can do is keep an eye out for the elusive Key to Heaven, try to help people, and hope that somebody up there notices what an angel she is, even if she's not literally one anymore. And try to avoid that really cute tempter, the one with the pale gray eyes and hypnotic smile, the one that makes her forget her own name and the fact that she's supposed to be a good girl.

Okay, so I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of Michelle's viral bloggers for her upcoming book Angel With Attitude. I got to read it several weeks before its release... which is great!
Valerie Grace has fallen from Heaven and she doesn't know why. She finds herself stuck as a human and working as a maid in a motel. She's trying to do good deeds along the way, hoping to find her way back into Heaven - where life is wonderful and safe. However, there's a Tempter Demon called Nathaniel who sets his sights on her, and he's determined to tempt her into Hell. I can't go into too much detail because it would give something vital away. Trust me. Everything that happens in this book happens for a reason. Michelle's constructed a wonderful, fun plot filled with very cool characters that keep you reading page after page to see where the adventure leads to next.
Val's a likeable heroine. All she wants is to get back home. Then there's her recently-turned-into-a-rat friend. He's funny and a little perverted, but always has something witty to say! And Lloyd, ah, definitely can't say anything about him but he's awesome. You'll all get a kick out of this guy! And of course, Nathaniel... the Tempter Demon that gets her burning inside, though she's determined not to let him get what he's after. There's also the wicked and snotty Julian... lol! There are a lot of other very interesting and hilarious characters to meet, but if I get started on them, this blog entry will go on for a looooooong while.
Anyway, Valerie's life gets even more interesting when she has to venture into the Underworld to retrieve the Key to Heaven. The imagery here is wonderful, starting with a sign that says: Welcome to the Underworld.
If you're after a very cool, funny, interesting and all round FUN read, make sure you do yourself a favour and pick this book up! Honestly, you'll get a kick out of it... just when you're sure what direction the story's gonna go, it throws you somewhere completely different. There are a lot of obstacles in the way of Valerie's quest, but everything counts towards the end.
I've enjoyed Michelle Rowan's "Bitten & Smitten" series, so I thought I'd check out "Angel with Attitude". I enjoyed her take on the Fallen Angels theme which seems to be so popular now in the YA genre. Of course, this is NOT a YA novel.
This one has poor Valerie Grace having been kicked out of Heaven and landing naked in a Killer Shark Pool at Marine:and in Niagara Falls. After being given an oversized T-shirt, a wallet is found with some money and her "birth ceritificate" with the address of a nearby motel. She had been warned about Tempter Demons, whose sole job is to seduce Fallen Angels and bring them down into Lucifer's Realm.
She gets hired by the manager of the Paradise Inn to be a maid and get free room and board out of it. She's looking to try and find a way back to heaven, since it was a mistake she got kicked out! She works on doing good deeds, and one of them nearly gets her killed. This is when she finally meets the Demon assigned to Tempt her, Nathaniel. She also makes friends with Reggie, who has a problem with his girlfriend who turns him into a rodent from a jealous rage. It turns out she has one hope to get back to where she belongs, to find the Mystical Key to Heaven... and she ends up needing Nathaniel's help to get it. Valerie was a little annoying in the beginning, but I loved it when she met the 9 year old psychic, and things got interesting from there!
It's a fun, humorous, chick-lit paranormal romance that has some fun characters that keep things flowing!
The heroine is stunned to suddenly find herself kicked out of heaven. There must be some mistake. She doesn't deserve to live as a human, she didn't do anything wrong! Lost, naked and a bit hopeless, she stumbles upon a motel run by an older gentlemen who takes her in and employs her as a maid.
A few months go by which no development on how to return to heaven. She keeps regular journals to remember things about being an angel because it seems her mind is slipping, becoming mortal and fragile. Life as a human sucks. Not only is she forced to make bed and clean toilets but she's also sick as a dog the night she's attacked in an alleyway and saved by her worst nightmare.
A demon. Worse-a tempter demon whose job is to lure fallen angels to hell. No, she refuses to accept his offers no matter how sucky life is and no matter how hansom her demon may be. Then, one night she stumbles upon her employer and his very own tempter demon in a situation which a fallen angel and demon should no be in. And to make things far more complicated, the key to heaven, the gift from the demon to her elderly lover is stolen by a bad guy, leaving the heroine stranded once again and her friend very ill. She vows to see the key returned so they can use it to return to heaven but to do this...she needs a demon.
Going to a witch and summoning a demon winds up only bringing the hero back to her after a few days of pleasant absence. The hero, the man she imagined when wishing for a demon is now completely under her spell and she uses her powers over him to make him take her to the beyond.
The world between earth and hell, where the demons live and where her enemy has taken her key to freedom. With her demon and friends turned rat in toe, they travel to a place masked by glamour to look pleasing but it honesty is a desolate and harsh place. Meeting demons some better than others, the heroine is forced to accept the fact that she herself was deserving of her fate in being cast from heaven.
Her sin was pride and she has that and more. The hero points out to her that she is quite self centered. That this whole mission to retrieve the key and save the world all started for selfish reasons. She wanted the key for herself. She can see that. She can also see that thinks have changed. Not only is she thinking of others above herself even in dangerous situations but she's also seeing the hero clearly for the first time. Never did she consider that a demon could be as chained as well. That the hero wasn't tempting innocent demons because he wanted to but rather because he had to.
Turns out the hero isn't a very good demon. He wasn't even supposed to be a demon, his abusive father was and now he's stuck in a job which fills his with guilt and torment all the days of his life. People around them comment on his next failure being his last but that the looks he's apparently giving her speak of a man in love.
It takes her some time to acknowledge this and just as they succumb to their feelings, the hero is ripped from her and sent to hell for punishment. Now, she must destroy the key and save the hero from himself before everything truly goes to hell in a hand basket.
I struggled with this book. At times I was laughing out loud at the comedy of it all, especially the rat friend-he was quite charming. At times I was wondering when the serious angst that this author is known for will kick in. It didn't have an equal balance between torment and humor- humor being the majority- and as such I didn't like it as much as other books Mrs. Rowan had written.
The problem is that this book is written entirely from the heroine's POV and nothing from the hero. This is an issue because the heroine could be a selfish, stupid and vain person while the hero had the struggle of being damned for no reason. The heroine wasn't a very good angel for most of the book. Sure she was nice and sweet but she had a very selfish personality and an ignorance of the world and people in general.
Sure the hero was a demon but even when she had him under her control she didn't trust him and for the most part she actually treated him like shit. Everything was about her and she didn't take the time to consider anyone else. Then all of a sudden she was in love with him and screwing in the cyclopes' house- although this word is extremely exaggerated as this was a clean book with ZERO sexual tension or passionate love scenes.
That was another issue. The passion was very little and completely PG rated at best. Not exactly what I'm looking for in a romance, especially in a book with a monotone jovial attitude with little darkness to balance the light. Lord almighty, even the bad guys were pussies. Over all, I liked this as much as I would like a young adult novel. Considering I try very hard not to read that genre, you get my point.
I loved this author. The concept of this book sounded great. I just can not keep my attention on it. My dogs spilled Chinese food on it and I have not picked it up since. I do not really wonder what happens in it. It was kind of predictable. I do not need to read it. So sad since I love her other series so much.
Michelle Rowen's reads are always addictive and fabulous. Finished this book basically in one night and it actually had a different ending than I expected. Loved it all!
I've read that book a few times, now, and I still like it. So obviously, it's not a bad book. The Tempter Demon is very cute, Reggie-the-rat a great backup character, the pace nice and there are cute and sometimes funny parts. But, truth be told, Valerie is an annoying as hell - pun indented - character. She goes from one mistake to another, not even learning from it untill the very end. And I can not help but thinking that, had she had a tiny bit of a backbone, this story would have been much more enjoyable. As it is, she pretty much undergo the entire story, and only makes it through because of the supporting characters. I still give the story 3 stars, because - like L'Oreal - Nathaniel and Reggie are worth it.
I loved this book! The style of writing is witty and compelling. This is the story of a fallen Angel who desperately wants to return to Heaven. Put she is met by a Tempter demon, Hell bent on dragging her to...well...Hell! Lots of action...and a man changed into a talking rat! Who doesn't like reading about that!
I absolutely loved this book. It was the first book in a very long time that I couldn’t put down. It was incredibly witty and fast-paced. It took more turns than I expected. The ending was such a delight too. Loved it!
This was kinda wacky and generally enjoyable. The plot was well thought out. I was looking for something light and fun and found this and it did the trick!
Too sugary sweet, candy coated fluff for me. Everything was too perfect, too easy, esp the MC's relationship. Why are the beings in the underworld or hell not redeemed, if they are good at heart eg Lloyd - he's fantastic! So wrong!
$12.51 for rat tricks. You would think that a rat doing tricks would draw more of an audience and much more money. This was all the money Reggie the Rat made when his fallen angel friend, Valerie Grace, forced him to do tricks to make some cash so she could get psychic Bob to help her get back into Heaven. Maybe, if Reggie wasn't forced to do tricks and was more willing and talented they could have made bank!
I read this part and busted out laughing. Just like the Immortality Bites Series, "Angel with Attitude" had me roaring. There were so many parts that were hilarious. Michelle Rowen has a "special" kind of humor. How do I describe her humor? Maybe a passage will explain it.
Valerie hurts her ankle. Her tempter demon, Nathaniel, who is uber sexy touches her leg. "'Your ankle is broken." The stranger's gaze had lowered and he was studying her foot..."Let me take a look at it for you," he said. Val shook her head. "Really, that's not necessary," but he'd already sunk to his knees and pulled up the right leg of her track pants, and was now running a warm hand down her calf. "Oh well, okay then. If you insist.'"
"Had she shaved her legs recently? She couldn't remember. She thought so. She'd tried out that depilatory lotion stuff. According to the packaging, it was supposed to last longer than just shaving. She was finding human maintenance to be extremely time-consuming, and in the case of the lotion--a bit goopy."
I thought this was comical. Of course, I busted out laughing. There were many times I did this and, again, my husband had to find out what was so funny. I ignored him and kept reading "Angel with Attitude." Valerie has some stranger touching her and she doesn't know it's her tempter demon, yet, but worries about her legs being shaved. Yes, there are moments like this silly one that all women have experienced, I'm sure. I know I have and the reality of the situation makes it funny.
The storyline was creative and I really hope the Underworld doesn't exist. Or maybe, it wouldn't be so bad if it did look like Miami. The Nightflyers were scary and they would not be fun to encounter, but if glamours really could happen that would be fun. If witchcraft really existed, I can think of some people I would like to turn into rodents or just vanquish them.
Rowen makes me wonder if some New York Times bestselling romance writers are Demons! Maybe, being a demon helps them with their writing and making it so creative. Hmm, something to mull over on a dull Friday night with no where to go or nothing to do, but laundry.
For readers who love Chick Lit, Michelle Rowen, knows how to entertain us and make the reader laugh out loud. I highly recommend "Angel With Attitude" and Rowen's other books.
Sitting on her little cloud and innocently playing her harp (okay, I´m kidding) the angel Valerie Grace is suddenly thrown out of heaven and her fall ends in a killer tank at Niagara Falls. Confused about being human and seeing no reason why she was kicked out of heaven Valerie tries to adjust to human life. She finds a job at a motel called "Paradise Inn" and her only wish is to go back to heaven. But life is dangerous for a fallen angel, the "other side" in form of the sexy and handsome Tempter Demon Nathaniel isn´t idle to persuade her to change sides and come to hell out of her free will. One day she learns that she isn´t the only fallen angel around, that her fellow sufferer was given the Key to Heaven and that it was stolen by the evil demon Julian from him. Valerie decides to get the Key back because with its help she´s sure that she can go back home. To achieve this goal she summons with the help of the witch Claire a demon who should be her guide into the underworld. How big is her surprise when Nathaniel appears who is annoyed about her summoning and his failure so far to tempt her to hell and isn´t really enthusiastic about helping her... It´s a nice book but nothing special. The characters are likeable, even some demons are not the evil villains they should be e.g. one is a romance-writer (well, what shall we think about that fact??). Nathaniel became a demon by accident and isn´t really a bad guy what makes him a bit whiny about his fate in my opinion. I would have preferred a more "demonic" demon to be forced to help Valerie it would have made the victory of love much more interesting. There was also a bunch of secondary characters like Reggie the man turned into a rat by his jealous witch girlfriend Claire, Lloyd the romance writing demon (under the pseudonym Trixie L´Amour with his own website!), the evil demon Julian, Lucifer´s son who is seeking to raise in his father´s esteem by stealing and using the Key and some more. I liked the sexual tension between Val and Nathaniel and thankfully the main characters in this book didn´t just fall from one bed into another and there are no detailled sex scenes. So if you wait for a big bedroom scene you will be disappointed. All in all it is a light and entertaining book to spend a quiet evening with reading but don´t expect too much.
The storyline was definably different from any other that I've read before in a the paranormal romance genre, and the first to include angels.
The romance was strong and believable and I could feel the emotions of the characters and enjoyed how everything played out. The chemistry between Nathaniel and Val is strong, but I had my doubts that it would all work out in the end. In true romance fashion, it did.
However I did have a couple problems with the book as well.
First off there was no sex scene. While the story itself didn't need it, I felt that because Val was once an angel and this would be a huge step for her, it should have been included. By skipping over the scene completely I felt like I lost some development in Val's character and a major change in her relationship with Nathaniel. If it was not going to be included, I don't think the characters needed to engage in it at all. The sexual tension between them was gone after that and they lost a bit of their flare.
That's not to say that them having sex didn't have a important role, Nathaniel's betrayal so soon after would also be more devastating if they did engage in sex, so it serves it's purpose. But if it is going to be included, as least tell us about it and Val's feelings. A sentence or two isn't going to do it if we are to truly invest in a character we have been allowed to see her feelings all this time.
Secondly, the ending, while beautiful and touching in it's own way, doesn't seem realistic. We are talking about Lucifer and, in a way, doing something nice which seems way out of character for him. Sure, it could be explained that it was a punishment for Nathaniel to make him human, but Lucifer had to know that he would seek out Val and then be happy. While I thought the ending was beautiful, I have to point out that if would not have happened that way.
Other than that, a few errors with the typing where quotation marks were put in weird places, the book was good. I liked it and would probably read it again.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Falling naked into the killer whale tank at MarineLand is going to ruin anyone's day, but when you've just been banished from heaven with a brief "don't talk to Tempter demons" speech it's even worse. Valerie Grace used to be an angel and after her dramatic banishment has ended up working as a maid at the Paradise Inn. But a random coincidence leads Valerie to realise that there is a stolen key to Heaven which would enable her to go home...as long as she can survive the very tempting Tempter Nathaniel.
This is one of my favourite stand alone books of all time, mostly because it is absolutely hilarious and cleverly written. The idea of an angel banished from heaven is interesting enough but by adding in her desperation to get back the author has created a brilliant story that travels from our world to hell and back. The storyline is well plotted, managing to branch in unexpected directions with some clever twists and turns.
Valerie is a brilliant lead character. She's really confused and upset by her banishment and is desperately clinging to her few fading memories of heaven. Valerie is willing to do just about anything to get back which leads to some hilarious situations. Nathaniel is the ideal Tempter Demon as not only is he drop dead gorgeous, but he isn't that good at tempting Valerie. It soon becomes clear that a potential romance is blooming, much to the horror of both Nathaniel and Valerie.
My favourite character has to be Reggie. He is Valerie's friend who upsets his witch girlfriend Claire who then demonstrates her powers by turning him into the rat she feels he is. Reggie is a rat for the majority of the book which adds another comedic twist to the story. The other character I loved was the demonic romance writer Lloyd who manages to steal every scene he is in.
All in all this was a really fun read that I fully recommend.
Just finished reading the book, and I must say that the story is unique (imo). It was my first read of a fantasy romance novel which has angels and demons for characters. The plot is not as predictable as I have thought before reading it. There were hilarious comebacks, sexual yet romantic tension between the characters, and of course, several twists that you would never (well, I've never) predict nor expect in the end. I found myself giggling like a teenage girl while reading parts of this book, I find their chemistry to be undeniably amazing as both characters are defiant of what they feel towards each other. What I love more in this book is that it has all the excitement and the hype that I'm looking for in a story making it more worth-reading, and that the romantic parts are not too heavy, instead it was funny and cute and sweet at the same time. I know that I like the story when I read every single line of every paragraph there is in a novel without skimming through any of it, and with this book, I haven't. I was never bored reading this book. You'll love Reggie, I'm telling you, he's hilarious. :) Anyway, what I did not like here is the way it ended. I mean, after all the hype in the climax, the ending just does not suffice. Don't get me wrong, I do love happy endings, but this one's not as creative as I thought it will be. It seems like it was all quickly sewn up. I just wished Ms. Rowen did better with the way the story ended. All in all, Angel With Attitude is a light, very entertaining read and is easy to put down without wanting another sequel. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.
3.5 stars: Im conflicted. On one hand, I enjoyed this book and yet - it also was predictable, corny/mushy and a bit silly!! I had worked out the ending from about 1/3 of the way through (not a good thing). I thought Reggie was a twat the entire book. He should have stayed a rat the cheating prick!! I found it annoying that it was completely obvious that Nathaniel was head over heels in love with her (after only 3 days that is - eeeekkk. Thats a bit stupid right there too!! It takes more than 3 days before you would do anything for someone :/ arghhh, getting off topic) but Valerie. Nathaniel was sweet and sexy... But the whole romance when from 0 to 100 within a chapter. I get lust at first sight... But this was too cliche. Ive read to many fabulous REALISTIC romances lately and this just seemed ridiculous. While I did laugh (and was amused) by a few sections of the book. It couldnt hold a candle to her series "Bitten and Smitten". I liked Vals character growth - at the beginning she was some dimwit newbie human who was all 'I want to go home to Heaven'. Towards the end she realised Heaven is overrated (haha) and you can be perfectly happen on Earth too :D Im still a fan of Ms Rowen and will read all her future novels, but this just wasnt as enjoyable as her other reads. I paid $28 for this book fropm Angus and Robertson and feel a little ripped off (not a good sign!!!). Stay away from Fallen Angels and stick to Vamps!! I am looking forward to her upcoming book 'Blood, Bath and Beyond'. Cant wait to get back into Sarahs story!!! :D
So, about this time last year, I started reading this book. I got about thirty or so odd pages in, when I had to stop reading it. That should tell you my opinion of it.
The biggest issue I found with this book is that absolutely no one in it has a good trait. They're all huge self-important assholes whose maturity is stuck somewhere between 14 to 16, with few social skills and even fewer communication skills. Everyone talks and acts like they've stepped out of Sweet Valley High.
And here's the thing- they're all meant to be centuries old demons and angels. I can understand Reggie and Claire, whose relationship at the best of times is a little rocky. But Valerie is an angel (fallen or otherwise), who apparently own Employee of the Month in Heaven. Nathaniel is a centuries-old tempter demon. And Julian- freaking Julian- is Lucifer's son and acts like an overgrown man child who throws temper tantrums, cries about his daddy and talks like he's been watching too much of the O.C..
This book is full of awful cliches. Valerie and Nathaniel hop in the sack after only knowing each other for only a few days. Reggie is a slime ball who can't keep his dick in his pants but, don't worry! he's a ~*~nice guy~*~ at heart. And Lloyd is a fairly homophobic caricature.
The storyline held my attention enough that I could get through it, and the book is an incredibly easy read. If I had more free time I could have gotten through it in a day, maybe a day and a half. But I couldn't truly enjoy it, given the weak, one-dimensional characters and constant Valley Girl-ing.
Synopsis Valerie Grace has no idea why she was booted out of heaven and landed naked in a killer whale tank. Plus, every day her memories of heaven are fading and she knows it's only a matter of time before the Tempter demon assigned to her shows up. Can Val fight the temptation of the dreamy Nathaniel and find her way back into heaven?
Review I don't know that if I had seen this particular cover in the image if I would have read this book. I came across a random copy of this and read it while hanging out at an assisted care center... The story is actually entertaining, and while it feels a bit predictable, I was semi surprised about the conclusion of the book. Michelle Rowen's books always read like an engaging soap operas, and this one was no exception. Also, it was thankfully limited on the "smutty" descriptions.
My Recommendation It's a fun read if you come across it, but I don't know that I would go out and buy the book. An excellent pick from a library though!
A light hearted story about an angel (Valerie Grace) who becomes a fallen angel seemingly out of the blue (first a note is shoved at her about the rules to abide by if you are a fallen angel, then she finds herself naked and in a killer whale tank). She is determined to find out why she was kicked out of heaven and to get back, but problems abound. First of all, she is assigned a Temptor Demon, Nathanial, whose job it is to tempt her to Hell, and she has trouble saying no. Then her friend gets turned into a rat by his witch girlfriend. Then she finds out that another demon, Julian, has the Key to Heaven and if he uses the key it could mean the end of the world, and she's the only one to stop him. Overall a cute, amusing story, though I found Val to be a little too cute or saccarine, even with her snarky remarks to Nathaniel and the faults other characters thought she had.
Although this book had a bit of a slow start, it improved as Valerie's grip on her new found humanity improved. Not certain if that was intentional, but either way once I was beyond that point it didn't matter.
The characters were great (just as I have come to expect from Michelle Rowen), and I even ended up with a soft-spot for Reggie (even if he can be a rat -- literally & figuratively speaking).
Just the right mix of humor, squishy romantic feelings, and a couple of twists and turns along the way.
Well-paced and with a satisfying resolution that doesn't leave you aching for another book. (Which is a relief after so many 'series' books in a row.)
Now I will stop getting all 'parenthetical' (really, I will) and move on to finishing one of the non-Kindle books I'm reading.
A good read by Michelle Rowen. I would call this urban fantasy (as I would call all of her works - especially the Immortality Bites series). This is PG compared to most of the "paranormal romance" out there. Good lazy day read or beach day where you are leery of the kids over turning your book (and reading something they shouldn't be).
A fallen angel who has no idea why she was kicked out of Heaven is sent on a mission to save the world from Lucifer's insane (and apparently impotent bastard son, Julian). On her way, she meets the thing that all Fallen Angels dread, their Tempter demon. Valerie's is called Nathaniel. And does he have to be that hot?
Suddenly kicked out of heaven, Valerie Grace is one confused fallen angel struggling to adapt to being human. With her fall from grace comes her own personal Tempter demon, Nathaniel, whose sole job is to tempt Val to his side. Among a frantic race for the stolen Key to Heaven, Val must try to resist the oh-so-irresistible Nathaniel.
Such a great premise and interesting characters, but this just fell a little flat for me. Val and Nathaniel both are full of life, but I just never saw their connection. Additionally, the whole plot meandered a bit.
This was a cute, fun, light story. Valerie is thrown from heaven and ends up working as a maid in a run-down hotel near Niagra Falls.
What I enjoyed: * Reggie - he was a fun character and pretty brave to be with his girlfriend. * The slight twist at the end. * The things Valerie was doing trying to get back into heaven. * Nathaniel's reaction to Valerie sneezing. * Lloyd the romance writing demon.
What could have been better: * A little more romance would have been nice. *
Loved it! Excellent for people who are looking for a light, fun read. I also liked Nathaniel and the protagonist Valerie. I liked how the author managed to add in biblical sins and her imagination of the Underworld.
The rat's journey and commentary made for a very fun read. Also I also had to add one of the bits that cracked me up. Spoiler alert!!!
"Muck-ruick soorl" the demon spat at her. "How dare you!" "What did he say?" Val asked. "No idea," Claire replied. "But it sounded rude don't you think?"
A fallen angel and a tempter demon team up to retrieve the stolen Key to Heaven from Lucifer himself. With the aid of a friend bewitched into a rat, the duo invade the Underworld and battle foes to reach their goal. But when they get the key, will Valerie use it to return through the heavenly gates, or will she decide to remain behind, forever earthbound, to be with the demon who loves her? A quick-read story with wit and attitude.
While this book had some pretty funny parts, I thought it was overall just ok. I didn't find the characters super relatable because they seemed very shallow and over-exaggerated. It was fun and entertaining, but with as silly a storyline as it had, it was hard to really be gripped by the book. Rowen's writing is creative, but I just didn't especially love the characters and there was very little character development. As I said, it was just ok.
