Not all ghost stories are simple sightings and things going bump in the night. Not all ghosts are left behind because of simple unfinished business. No, sometimes that unfinished business is messy, complicated, and even deadly.
These are not your typical ghost stories—they are desire, love, and most importantly, revenge—all rolled into one. Revenge for a love stolen away, a love that never was, a retribution for a horrific act, or even an act of war.
Containing original stories and poetry by A.K. Alexander, Sara Dobie Bauer, Clint Collins, Harley Easton, Rhonda Parrish, Wendy Sparrow, Elesha Teskey and ReLynn Vaughn.
Completely adored this collection, each spin of a ghost story was so completely different from the last that the entire book stayed fresh, instead of the rinse and repeat you can get in a collection novel. "Ghosted" with the haunted house smart system was one that really struck my fancy, "Abeyance" broke my heart and balmed it at the same time, "Love A la carte de visite" was INTENSE with a shocking end! I was completely taken aback. And of course Gin and Vin... Oh my... So many great shorts I will read this again and again.
There were a couple of easy-to-predict storylines, and a couple of stories that I thought wrapped up too easily, but this was a lot of fun to read, and I really liked all the stories and definitely want to read them all again. I have some thoughts on each of the stories below.
She Laughed - This was a poem, and oh my gosh, yikes.
I Spy - Ooh, old, haunted church and good, creepy fun from the start. I like worrying if people are going to live or not.
The Legacy - Interesting. I quite like banshees. The narrative style was odd, but it worked well for the story.
Ghosted - I wanted more haunting!! It was good but way too fast, and the ending was kind of corny in my opinion. I still liked the story a lot though.
Abeyance - I don’t know what to say about this, but I liked it. It was odd and interesting, and there was something cathartic about it.
Love a la Carte de Visite - Nice ending. I was quite invested in the plot and characters. The main guy was a tad immature, like he could have been 16 or 30, and the story read awkward in a few places, but I really liked it.
The Belle of Randolph Hall - There was a bit of insta "love" going on with the main characters, and the ghosting was predictable and easy, but it was fun, and the writing was really good.
Gin and Vin’s Last Ride - This was spooky and a lot of fun, and I loved the “hallucinations” the character was having. It was a great way to wrap up the anthology.
Well this was a delightfully spooky read, filled with all kinds of things I love, including: a crumbling seminary, banshees, old daguerreotype photographs, a bed and breakfast, and a bank-robbing couple. All haunted of course. My favorite stories were probably LOVE A LA CARTE DE VISITE by Harley Easton (loved the use of the old photos and letters and the historical context here) and GIN AND VIN'S LAST RIDE by Elesha Teskey (this has a really Bonnie and Clyde feel with a great twist and again, I love anything with a historical vibe). I recommend reading this on a stormy night, preferably if the power goes out.
This shocks nobody who knows me but I am obsessed with ghosts. Growing up in a family full of spiritual people who praised God and openly acknowledged spirits , it’s really not a surprise I hold these beliefs. Ghosts can sometimes be scary yes but often times they are marks and afterthoughts holding onto the world because what’s beyond this plane is terrifying. I get it. I want to get into some of the ghosts I’ve encountered personally but this isn’t about me. This is about HAUNTED So this is a short story collection very true to its name. The stories and poetry within are haunted don’t get me wrong but even so within these stories is the underlying theme of love and hope. I was actually pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this anthology. Some of the stories are bittersweet but most are joyful and you think of them long after you’re done reading them.
My favorites are: I Spy by Sara Dobie Bauer Abeyance by Relynn Vaughn Gin and Vin’s Last Ride by Elesha Teskey
The theme of life and love after death is prevalent in all of these stories which makes it such a great book I believe. Not only will these stories unsettle you but you’ll take away that hope, love, and a bit of insanity is enough to keep you grounded to one place long after you perish.
Overall, great anthology! If you get scared easily I highly recommend this book because it’s not so much terrifying as it is sweet and sad. There’s a lot of romance thrown in as well!
Thanks so much Netgalley and the publisher for this copy of my ARC. Get it groovy, ghouls.
I’d not read any horror anthologies before dipping into “Haunted”, and hadn’t read any horror at all for, well, way too long. But now I’ve seen the light!
I really enjoyed this anthology. Every story was engaging, and together they’re an interesting and varied collection, ranging from romantic to edgy, with plenty of surprises and twists along the way.
Whether you're a fan of banshees or gangsters or run-of-the-mill people who had really bad luck, you'll find ghosts of all stripes and shades in this anthology. Short fiction as an art form meets chills and spirits--some kind, some nasty, some just plain weird--in this collection of eight stories designed to put a shiver in your spine. Just in time for the Halloween season, too. Pick this up and give yourself something to read by candlelight, flashlight, or the light of the moon, and enjoy.
I enjoyed the entire collection of spooky stories with a twist, but I must admit that the last story in the book, written by Elisha Teskey, really took me by surprise! I did not see what was coming, and having the story set in my small farming town was a thrill.

I know this probably isn't the time to read horror, or maybe it is, either way, an anthology was a way to go. The reason why I love reading anthologies so much is that because they are short stories within one book, I don't feel pressured to have to continue reading or I don't feel guilty for DNFing a story in an anthology. During times that I have trouble reading or find myself short of reading time, I typically aim for anthologies for this reason. This anthology has a mix of genres that have one thing in common each story has a female ghost as it's center. This was an interesting concept, and I was so glad that I read this book. Each story was so vastly different from the others, I was expecting horror cliches and lots of scary moments. While some stories had this, other stories had Love and Comedy.
My absolute favorite story was Abeyance by Relynn Vaughn. Its perspective was that of Lisa who died and it skips back in forth in time during her death to show how she is handling the changes that Alan (her husband) is going through. It's very interesting because the story shows both Alan and Lisa's grieving and how a ghost could feel should the person they love moves on. There are also other dynamics in the story that I do not want to give away that also made this story my favorite. There was surprisingly not a single story in this anthology that I skipped and I enjoyed the book from start to finish.

What a great collection of creepy ghost stories. Amazing plot and story lines for all of these and they kept me gripped to my seat. Characters have been fleshed out well. Nice world building in all. Recommend reading.

This collection was all over the place in the best possible way. Some stories were romantic, some were heartbreaking, and some were almost nightmare-inducing, but all were well written and entertaining. At a few points I had to put it down and walk away to get my imagination under control because I was freaking myself out. I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of a ghosts or an engaging short story and doesn’t mind a little fright.
I really enjoyed this creepy, spooky, entertaining anthology of stories and poems honoring ghosts, revenge, #metoo, romance, nerds, banshees, and love among other things. It was thrilling getting to read works by talented, creative, new-to-me authors, and although each tale and poem were completely different, they were all equally brilliant.
I received a free copy of this book, but that didn’t affect my review.

I am a HEA kind of girl. But I also love a good ghost story. This collection contains a little bit of HEA and a lot of ghosts! The first story, in this case a poem, could cause a trigger for those who have been sexually assualted, and anyone who has problems with LBGT type relationships may want to pass on this as well. Otherwise, it is fabulous collection with shifting moods between each story. Enjoy!

This is a collection of short stories that you will laugh, some will leave you sitting on the edge of your seat. Ghost stories about revenge and plain just awesome female ghosts. I found a few favorites and I know you will too. I highly recommend this book.
I'm not big on short stories, but I really enjoyed these. They're light on the romance and good on the spookiness. Every author had something different to offer and I found some of the stories stuck with me for a few days afterwards. I would definitely recommend it.
This is a collection of short stories and poems ghost stories which will make you jump in plans. Best read at night under the covers as it will make you jump so much more
As always, an amazing collection of short stories.
The first poem set the precedent for the rest of the book and I’ll admit I was halfway scared by the second page.
Not all the stories got to me like that but it didn’t matter because the whole feel of the book was tense. It didn’t matter that the next story didn’t scare me as much as the previous because I was already scared so that the whole book felt that way.
It made it much more of an epic read. I loved it. I loved feeling scared and tense and vulnerable. If a book can do that, it’s got to be great right?
