Joe Gunther #29.5

Crosscut: A Joe Gunther Short Story

Rate this book
The very first short story from Archer Mayor's much-loved Joe Gunther series.

Going into the previously unexplored history of VBI Detective Sammie Martens, Archer Mayor reveals the story of how Sammie first met Joe Gunther and Willie Kunkel. Sammie Martens, raised by a single mother in a chaotic household, returns home after leaving the Army only to have her mother's current boyfriend kick her out of the house. When her mother is arrested the next day on a charge of armed robbery, Sammie is convinced her mother's boyfriend set it up and is now up to no good. Warned to stay away by the seemingly uninterested police, Sammie does exactly the opposite and starts her own investigation.

Includes 3 free chapters of BOMBER'S MOON, the next book in the Joe Gunther series.

Over the years, Archer Mayor has been photographer, teacher, historian, scholarly editor, feature writer, travel writer, lab technician, political advance man, medical illustrator, newspaper writer, history researcher, publications consultant, constable, and EMT/firefighter. He is also half Argentine, speaks two languages, and has lived in several countries on two continents.

All of which makes makes him restless, curious, unemployable, or all three. Whatever he is, it’s clearly not cured, since he’s currently a novelist, a death investigator for Vermont’s medical examiner, and a police officer.

Archer has been producing the Joe Gunther novels since 1988, some of which have made the “ten best” or “most notable” lists of the Los Angeles and the New York Times. In 2004 Mayor received the New England Booksellers Association book award for fiction.

Intriguing plots, complex characters, and a vivid landscape are the foundation of Archer Mayor's award-winning New England thrillers.

Thank you, Archer Mayor, for giving us a tidbit to tide us over until Bomber's Moon is released. It's nice to get the back story on one of my favorite characters in your stories. Keep on writing! For those of you who haven't read any Joe Gunther novels, by all means start.

This is a short story prelude to the Joe Gunther series novel to be released in September 2019. The story introduces a new character to the series. The new character is intriguing and it will be interesting to read the next full novel.

It was a short story but I was glad to find out how Sammie came to join this great group of cops. I don't care what anyone says about Willie I think he's the best. I enjoyed their interaction and bet they felt something for each other way back when.

Enjoyed it
Gave us the history of Sammie. This was a short story and shows a glimpse into Sammie I have many of the Joe Gunther series. The writing was great and I really enjoy the stories of the VBI. The Vermont bureau of investigations a small force but big stories.

A Joe Gunther short

When Sam got kicked out of her mom Helen’s house by mom’s sleazy boyfriend soon after returning from the military, she knew something was up. This Joe Gunther story is a short, fun read.
