Award winning author and illustrator Catherine Rayner studied Illustration at Edinburgh College of art. She fell in love with the city and still lives there with her husband, young son and a handful of creatures: Shannon the horse, Ena the grey cat and a goldfish called Richard.
She finds huge inspiration in her pets and often uses them as models, frequently asking Ena to pose so that she can study her posture and movement. Then she translates sketches of Ena into characters such as dragons and hares, not to mention moose and bears! But it was creatures of a wilder kind that inspired her first picture book, Augustus and His Smile - Catherine spent hours and hours watching and sketching tigers (in freezing temperatures) at Edinburgh Zoo.
Winner of the 2009 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal for her second book Harris Finds His Feet, Catherine has now been shortlisted four times for the award. She was also awarded the Best New Illustrator Award at the Booktrust Early Years Awards in 2006 and was named one of Booktrust’s ten Best New Illustrators in 2008. In 2010, she was the inaugural illustrator in residence at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. In 2012 Catherine’s book Iris and Isaac won the UKLA Children’s Book Award and the Dutch edition of Solomon Crocodile has been selected as PICTURE BOOK OF THE YEAR 2014 in The Netherlands by the CPNB.
This is a lovely short story about friendship and forgiveness portrayed through the beautiful animal of polar bears. All children are bound to go through rocky patches with their friends and this is a lovely way of expressing how they may feel if they fall out and that it is always okay in the end. This would be a great book to look at during PSHE with KS1 getting them to explore the emotions the bears are both feeling and how they can overcome these and question wether it is worth falling out to feel how they do.
It is a very warm story, with a nice message about friendship and coping with the little arguments that children may have. The story is not too complicated and the illustrations are stunning, with a real sense of space and light about them. It shows how important friendship is and can be used in PSHE lessons.
I really enjoyed this book. I thought the sentences were a lovely balance of easy to read yet still using creative vocabulary that may inspire children with their writing. This is a story that shows the importance of forgiveness in friendship and could definitely be used with a class in pshce or with individual children who may be having issues in their friendship.
At the time of writing there is no information on this author/illustrator. You'll find information here from her own website. http://www.catherinerayner.co.uk/inde.... Read to Nursery classes 24/Feb/2012.
Iris gets upset because Isaac doesn’t fit into her snow nest and it collapses. They both go off in a huff and realise that they miss the other. A truly heartwarming story of two polar bears who realise that everything is better when they are together and friends. Themes of friendship and forgiveness. Lovely addition to book corner in EYFS/KS1
Really enjoyed the relationship in this book and it would help children understand friendship and how they might not get along all the time but, they can come back to each other. The Illustrations were really good and it could be used as a book for drama and they could explore the theme of friendship through movement. I would read this across all year groups as it has a key message
Such a lovely book by a great author! Great for young children to teach them about being kind to one another and friendship. Subtle and calm illustrations but very beautiful and detailed to support the story. Great for a PSHE lesson about morals and friendship for KS1.
A lovely wholesome story that illustrates the importance of friendship. This is a story that is perfect for KS1 and can be used in PHSE for lessons about friendships, relationships and learning how to resolve differences. I read it with a smile on my face!
a wonderful book about friendship and having a fight with a friend. a great book to spark a discussion about friendships and falling out and how really it was silly and what you really want to do is come back together and fix what happened. nice and easy to read and understand
Un très bel album aux couleurs chaudes de l'hiver du Pôle Nord (si, si !) On y apprend que les compromis sont préférables à la solitude et que les belles choses le sont pls encore lorsque l'on peut les partager.
This book is all about friendship and how experiences are better when there are friends to share it with. The polar bears get angry at each other but soon miss each other when they go off on their own. This is a nice and short light hearted story with a happy ending.
Lovely book which explores the wonders and effects friendship can have on people. This book is a story about Iris and Isaac who struggle to see eye-to-eye but soon realise the importance friendship has within our lives.
Gorgeous illustrations (as always with Catherine Rayner) and a lovely message about friendship and the joys of sharing experiences. Going in my box of winter/Christmas books to enjoy every year!
A lovely story about two polar bears who explore the feelings of forgiveness and friendship! The stunning illustrations add to this lovely story and the clear message and value of these themes!
It's always much better to do things with a friend.....shared experiences mean so much more.... and the beautifully drawn characters in this story teach us that important lesson.
In December, 2015 Rosanne and Duane gave me this book to take to Ryan. It was a very tumultuous time in our family with 2 funerals to plan and Juanita's estate to settle. So it was 6 months later before I remembered to take this book, Iris and Isaac and Katie's Kitten to Ryan.
Ryan and I sat outside the Mexican restaurant in Elgin, OK and read this while Angelica and Alissa caught up on all their news about Alissa's trip to Dallas.
Ryan insisted on starting in the middle of the book and reading to the end. He didn't have all the answers to his questions. So we went back to the beginning and started again. Then he understood.
I love Catherine Rayner's beautifully illustrated, thoughtful stories that explore issues close to young children's hearts. Iris and Isaac are friends, until they have a big fight, and now they are definitely NOt friends. Children will relate to how Iris and Isaac feel after an argument, and how they eventually come to make friends once more.
A lovely children's picture book, this story follows the friendship of two polar bears up in the Arctic. After falling out, the pair soon discover how much their friendship means to them both and the happiness they missed when they left each other. This is a perfect book to read to all children, but particularly those that may be having problems in a friendship, and with the support of the beautiful illustrations, the story is really bought to life.
