A new, terrifying post-apocalyptic series from #1 best-selling post-apocalyptic author Mike Kraus

A revolutionary technology. A sinister foe. A desperate fight for survival.

When a new drilling method enables access to a deep source of renewable energy, all expectations are that Ultilitron will champion a new era in electricity production. When the lights go out and the killing starts, the country's emotions quickly turn from elation to fear. As a sinister foe emerges from the shadows, the survivors of the initial disaster must band together to survive, lest their lights be snuffed out like the countless others before them....

A new, intensely thrilling and terrifyingly nail-biting series, Last Light is a post-apocalyptic adventure from Justin Bell and Mike Kraus like you've never seen before. Taking the tropes of post-apocalyptic and simultaneously turning them on their head and masterfully playing to them, Justin & Mike deliver a heart-pounding series that will both excite and terrify you with every turn of the page. Last Light is planned to be a 6-book series, delivered monthly.

Last Light - The Last Light Book 1 - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Power giants Utilitron have developed a new means of drilling for maximum potential, that seems to promise a new era of reduced power bills for millions of customers.
So far, so good you might say, but nothing ever turns out as expected in sci-fi fantasies - instead of the brilliant outcome a devastating apocalyptic event wipes out nearly 95% of the global population, by releasing a dark entity like no other before!

A Thrilling Post-Apocalyptic Survival Series in 6 parts, released monthly, Last Light by Masters of the Post-Apocalyptic Thriller Justin Bell and Mike Kraus, is the start of an epic journey that is sure to entrance and engage readers from the very first page.

Interesting. The worlds power is at crippling point, and some company has the means to change that. They drill down into the earth, where no one has drilled before, and come across a metal that harbours lots of power, but what else have they drilled into. You can only rob the Earth of so many of its minerals before something has to give.
This story is quite good, and I can’t wait to find out what they have unleashed on Earth by drilling down so far. Black shadowy shaped dogs that only come out at night are plaguing the town where the biggest power station for the East coast of USA is situated. Hell Hounds? Or something completed worse?, if there could be anything worse. I’m intrigued to find out. Currently anticipating the next instalments.

This book drove me nuts. I get that it’s Christian fiction. I can take all the people going to God for their needs. I do that, too. But it’s SO sexist, and full of really old stereotypes. UGH. Why are just the women asked to help with the canning and the men the defenders allowed to have guns? Just UGH.

Another start to a fantastic series. A new drilling discovery leads to a not so super discovery. Impossible to stop reading until you find out what happens. Loved it.

The story itself was fantastic, completely original.
However there are, at least to me, many glaring mistakes.
In a firefight a shotgun changes to a rifle for a paragraph, then back into a shotgun.
Ottawa, Canada is constantly and repeatedly referred to as "tundra". Ottawa is the capital city of Canada, a city of a million people, at least 3000 miles from any tundra.
There are other errors and points of contention, but I'm not pointing them all out.
Great, great story. Loved it. But, boy, it could use some editing.

The story felt plain and didn't introduce anything new into the post apocalyptic genre. It felt like it needed an editor's touch. There were sentences that repeated segments from the previous paragraph, various grammatical errors, and repeating phrases/metaphors used far too often. Due to the blandness of the story and the poor writing style I can't bring myself to read the sequel.

**Painfully generic**

I couldn't scrounge up a 2nd star for even pity's sake, which is something I'm sometimes prone to do if a story does SOMETHING worthwhile to appease my appetite. At the very least, I wanted to commend it for being a short and quick read (which it was), but even THAT was achieved not only by the shorter page count, but also because I legit had to skim my way through large chunks of it due to sheer boredom. So no. I didn't feel generous with that 2nd star. Not this time.

I could tell within the first few chapters how this story was gonna go, but was hoping it would rectify itself as it went along. That was a bust, though. I just couldn't get past literally everything that bothered me, from the weak character developments, the mix of bloated and watery expositions, and the lack of compelling and/or believable circumstances. It all came across as VERY bland, a badly watered down version of the genre.

I'm either spoiled from other authors' far superior apocalyptic stories, or this work is weak sauce all on its own. But both are applicable here, me thinks. When not even the unexpected revelation of the "sinister foe" (as was revealed by the synopsis) was enough to woo me, that's a problem. And I LOVE stories with inventive, creepy, or shocking foes. This one, though, simply did NOT work for me, even though it tried. I guess.

I'll at least offer this much: this is the first book of the series, and perhaps it does get better as it goes on, as is often the case. But I'm personally way too turned off by what I experienced here, especially considering that this was penned by not one, but two authors? That in and of itself is pretty bad, imo. At any rate, I will not be moving forward into this series. Thanks, but no thanks. Onward to bigger and better things...

I always like a different spin on the apocalypse and this book certainly delivers. It has a strong fantasy-horror element to it and plays to the fact that most humans have uneasiness in the dark. I did find it a bit incredible that armed marauders would show up at a remote, rural Vermont farm, the day after the outage and after a major snowstorm. It seems like they would have gone for easier pickings. I also wish this books were a bit longer as I am not a fan of the short, episode style. I am interested to see what happens in the next book.

New and different

Justin Bell has outdone himself. Heaven's Fist was good, really good but here he's brought forth an apocalyptic event created by arrogance and greed. Oh and nasty creatures that aren't zombies. Not a big fan of zombie books, there's only one author who writes books about them that I'll read.

On the edge of your seat and your white fingertips gripping story.

This is an extraordinary first book in a series. You get two parallel plots feeding into each other in a smooth, evolving, articulate action packed rollercoaster ride. Mike and Mary Beth fight to survive in this apoplectic world. A fantastic series so far.

It's 1959 all over again

Think about 3 foot tall humanoids wearing funnels on their heads and clown noses, all covered in white makeup. These things climbed out of an oil well carrying 1940's Electrolux vacuums and it took (you guessed it), Superman to get them to go back home. Sound familiar?

Ok first book, good action and characters!

The books keeps a good pace, and tries to keep the story believable, however it was hard to think that a few day the contact of the world just ends, as is American pmc troops having so much power and vileness. But the characters build well and I enjoyed the book over all as a good simple read.

Zombie apocalypse.....
I enjoy reading the survival books about what happens WTSHTF....whether it is an EMP or whatever. I DON'T like it when they throw in the zombies, whether animals or some sort of scifi-created being.
Not my cup of tea. I rarely quit on a series, but I finished the first book and quit.

Great horror novel!

Lots of death and destruction some from humans and a lot from weird 6 legged vicious monsters that no one has seen or heard of before the new geothermal owed source was found in Canada. Don't read if you scare easily!

Last Light is the first post apocalyptic survival book in this series written by authors Justin Bell and Mike Kraus. It is definitely a different take on TEOTWAWKI.

Three stars

Not the worst post apocalyptic story , but not the best , either. Not much background information and a lot of switching between characters. Not sure if I'll read book two. The authors have written better books .

Slicks?

I am not sure how to react to the inclusion of the slicks. I will continue to read the next book in this series to see how they will be eliminated if at all.
