Wreckleaf by JD Steiner is a gripping and thought-provoking novel that seamlessly blends elements of fiction, mystery, and adult fantasy. Steiner's captivating storytelling and vivid imagination take readers on an unforgettable journey through a dystopian future.

Set in a world devastated by environmental disasters and political unrest, Wreckleaf introduces us to a diverse cast of characters who are struggling to survive in a harsh and unforgiving landscape. At the heart of the story is the enigmatic protagonist, Nerissa, a young woman haunted by her past and driven by a relentless desire for truth and justice.

The world-building in Wreckleaf is a standout aspect of the novel. Steiner meticulously constructs a bleak and atmospheric setting, where protagonist had to fight against to save her loved ones. The author's attention to detail brings the dystopian world to life, making it feel both disturbingly familiar and hauntingly different.

The plot of Wreckleaf is intricately woven, combining elements of suspense, mystery, and moral dilemmas. As Nerissa unravels the secrets surrounding the mysterious corporation known as Wreckleaf, the story gains momentum and keeps readers engaged until the very end. Steiner expertly balances action-packed sequences with quieter moments of introspection, allowing the reader to delve into the characters' motivations and inner struggles.

The characters in Wreckleaf are multi-dimensional and well-developed, each with their own distinct voice and personal journey. Nerissa’s determination and resilience make her a compelling protagonist, while the supporting characters bring a diverse range of perspectives and experiences to the narrative. The complex relationships and dynamics between the characters add depth to the story, exploring themes of trust, betrayal, and the blurred lines between right and wrong.

Moreover, Wreckleaf tackles important themes such as environmentalism, greed, and the consequences of unchecked power. Steiner uses the dystopian setting to shed light on real-world issues, provoking readers to contemplate the implications of their own actions and the impact on the planet.

One minor drawback of Wreckleaf is that the pacing can be uneven at times, with certain sections feeling rushed while others unfold slowly. However, the overall strength of the narrative and the compelling world-building compensate for this minor flaw.

JD Steiner's imaginative storytelling, well-crafted characters, and thematic depth make this book a must-read for those seeking a captivating and immersive reading experience. I highly recommend Wreckleaf to anyone who enjoys thought-provoking adult fiction that explores the human condition in the face of adversity.

Many thanks to Anna Stileski, publisher at Bow’s Bookshelf, for inviting me to read and review the ARC of Wreckleaf by JD Steiner.

Designed as a disposable novelty, Nerissa’s kind was believed to be eliminated years ago. But after a fatal act of self-defense exposes her, the local authorities offer Nerissa and her family a solution: In exchange for their services, they are allowed to live under false identities in the most exclusive place on Earth—the island of Panacea—the lap of luxury for the world’s elite traveler.

With the opening of the tourist season and the launch of a new island-made product promising health and vitality, Nerissa makes a disturbing discovery. She and her family have become unwitting accomplices in a deadly experiment. Vowing to redeem her past, Nerissa sets out to expose the corrupt entity controlling both her kind and the humans she has grown to love. But what will her blind determination cost? Will she once again do more harm than good?

This novel, book one of an up and coming series, is due to release in March 2023.

This YA dystopian/fantasy had an intriguing plot and was even more well-written. I was entranced from the first page with beautiful descriptions of Nerissa’s species, where they lived, and how life has changed for them. I loved the character development and the missions the characters undertake, defying danger. The thrill of never quite knowing what Nerissa’s fate would be kept me turning pages.

I do think there were some areas of improvement. For example, I don’t think there needed to be as much detail on Nerissa’s work place, and more detail focused on either the corrupt government or her relationship with Devon. At times, I found Devon and Nerissa’s relationship unbelievable or perhaps underdeveloped, with fights and forgiveness happening far too quickly.

Also, note that there are some major trigger warnings for this book: sexual assault, domestic violence, death, and kidnapping all play a role here.

Overall, I do give this book four stars. I thought, despite the underdeveloped parts of the relationship, it was really well done and the writing flowed beautifully. I highly recommend to older YA readers (the violence may be too intense for younger ones) and adults who love dystopians. I’m excited to see how the series progresses in the future.

Wreckleaf is a unique and engrossing young adult fantasy novel that will take you on a rollercoaster ride of extraordinary powers and clashing corruption. With an ingenious plot twist, prepare yourself for an electrifying reading experience.

The story follows Nerissa, a seventeen year old aquatic hybrid whose kind was thought to be extinct. But a dangerous past leads to the unexpected exposure of family. The local authorities offer them to reside on the Island of Panacea, a lap of luxury for the elites.

But that was far from the truth, as they have been deceived into a deadly experiment. Soon enough the corruption and darkness is revealed but how far is Nerissa willing to go to protect the ones she loves? Their secrets are treasured to the point of absolute fatality if exposed but will the truth be finally revealed?

A richly explored young adult dystopian fiction that revolves around perilous undertakings and exposing the truth that will cost a huge amount. It was stunningly impressive and the revelations certainly kept me on the edge of my seat. The dynamics between characters are well-written and you will instantly be drawn to story right from the beginning. The title of the book has an alluring mystery to it.

"Between the dangers and the restrictions, the temptation to prove otherwise is minimal."

Readers who enjoy YA fantasy with  amalgamation of perplexing twists and turns should definitely pick it up for their next read.

As is often the case, the cover is what first drew me to this book. But little did I know about the fantasy journey JD Steiner with Wreckleaf.

Nerissa and her kind are hybrids, who require a special leaf, found only under the ocean on ship wrecks, to survive. When Nerissa unwittingly uncovers a well hidden secret about experiments being done on her own kind, as well as those being performed on unsuspecting tourist, who visit the lavish vacation spot of Panacea, she becomes a target for those who don't wish their secrets revealed. But the more she learns, the more determined she becomes to expose the truth, before she loses any more of those she loves.

An exciting and fast-paced YA fantasy that keeps readers guessing until the very last page.

stupid premise for just trash romance

Genetically created women were made for man’s pleasure but would get thrown away when they were bored with them - and not just a single woman, the whole species of these perfect looking women got boring so they were all but whipped out. Makes no sense. But a few evolved into beings that could reproduce, girls only, and somehow end up working at a luxury resort. MC hates it until she falls for another boring poet boy and together they make for a boring and pointless couple. Quite boring and dull.

An amazing first-time novel from JD Steiner. Her writing is so beautifully descriptive ~ I felt completely immersed in this new world with Nerissa and the dolhuphemale. I couldn't put it down ... I needed to know what was going to happen next. I can't wait for the sequel!
