Earl Town’s got problems: a lump on the head, a missing body, two angry FBI agents, and a client he can’t take his eyes off. He’s also out of his element. He’s just an ex-cop from a small New Hampshire town turned private eye, who finds himself looking for a murderer among America’s modern-day aristocracy in Greenwich, Westchester, and the Upper East Side. Earl doesn’t much like these people, their lifestyles, or their attitudes, and they don’t like Earl. Along the way, they’ll underestimate him, mock him, seduce him, and even try to kill him.
Earl Town and C. James Brown are a fantastic duo. I never talk about the plot when leaving a review. Suffice it to say that I totally enjoyed this first Earl Town novel, and I am looking forward to more of the same. I am a Philip Marlowe fan, and I saw a lot of Marlowe in Town. Can't wait for the next one.
I have a new favorite series. Earl Town is a modern day Mickey Spillane. He is a hard boiled P.I. with a past. Brown's writing is in the tradition of Raymond Chandler. Beautifully crafted with a compelling plot and interesting characters. Brown's writing creates the energy and pace that draws the reader into locomotive power of the story.
I just found a favorite new character as well as a new series to follow! Mystery as well! It can't get much better.
Earl Town is hired, sort of Sam Spade style, to investigate the missing boss. Soon he is involved in the intrigue of upward mobility which closes ranks to keep its secrets and to protect one of its own. But which one? Mac is missing, soon to be found murdered. His death complicates the closing of a billion dollar deal, the secrets of the upper echelon of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club, and closing of family, friends, and members to protect a murderer. But why?
Loved the book and old Earl was an interesting character. I liked him and hated for him to get the crap beat out of him but he was tough and smart in some ways-----not so much in others. Good read!
I wasn't sure what to expect since this is a new author for more but I have to say the twist in this story was entertaining. Wow the rich and their money hunger ways are really sad especially when others have to die. Really entertaining
Good old fashioned detective book! Thoroughly enjoyed every page of back and forth who-dunit? I totally guessed the wrong character for murderer but there were so many potentials with motives.
I found this story to have action, a good plot and multiple bad guys. Earl Town is a PI after leaving law enforcement. He's savvy, determined and principled about his work. I would put him in the same category as Spencer minus Hawk or Virgil Flowers, very persistent about tracking information down. The best part is it took me almost the entire book before I figured out who the murder was.
I found this mystery to be very entertaining. The characters were both interesting and off-putting at the same time. Such is the nature of the rich and powerful. Very appropriate for the currant scene. It really kept me guessing and I have read a lot of mysteries.
Some book you read have you on the nervous edge of your seat and others have hard to understand words or just too many words...they just stir you up. And there are days you want a read like that. This author has just the right characters, plot and language to be a very fun and comfortable read. Look forward to many more of his books!
This book was not quite as exciting as I hoped it would be. In this book, the only interesting conclusion was the infidelities and integrity of the rich and what money can buy.
The book needed a good proof reader also.
I received this book free from Goodreads for a honest opinion.
This well written, entertaining book rekindled my love of good PI crime mystery books. I love the writing style - modern yet classic. Great characters and a page-turning plot. A really enjoyable read.
Gripping story line, fast pace keeps your attention. Nice to read something where every other word isn’t an expletive or reference to someone having sex.
