What if you had to hit pause on your life and rewind? Just when you were ready to fast forward, prepared for anything but your past skipping through your victory lap. Tess Sinclair thought she had it all figured out, or at least, locked down for those last few months of prerequisite classes and working weekend shifts to earn tuition. One phone call from child services changes all her plans and she is forced to move back home. Maddy. Mad as sin. Mom. Tess may have turned eighteen, but now she feels like an adult going backwards. There are sibling fights to break up without joining them. Dinner recipes to fake from the can because her mother's too medicated to recite the ingredients. Being the new girl at the final year at high-school is a whole other level of teenage torture that she should have outgrown. Ditto to boy crushes. The good boy gone bad, his devilishly smart twin, and the hot jock that normally wouldn't give her the time of day, forget make a play. All led by a dark prince that finds out her sneakers are made of glass. They ought to be the kings of the school and Tess the poor, bullied girl from the wrong side of the tracks. This Cinderella tale has been told before, with a charming but predictable ending. Except, no one seems to have gotten the tropes right. The prince has a wicked stepmother. The jock struggles to hide he has more brains than brawn. The rich, heartthrob twins are bullied by the masses instead of put on a pedestal. Tess is the only one willing to come to their rescue. Can she figure out the hidden secret twisting their roles? If Tess can't run, then she'll learn to fight fate to get her victory lap to the finish line. Warnings/Triggers for references to mental health, institutionalization and stereotypes. Mention of child abuse/neglect. There is adult intimacy, violence and language as well as the usual drugs and alcohol with these darker themes. Oh, and lame jokes. I have plenty of those. Some may offend since they can take a religious tone as I poke fun of the Catholic school. You were warned. In this book the main female character ends up with multiple love interests at the end of the series in a HFN. +++ How about a 'bully themes' RH book with a different twist? The MFC comes to the rescue of her bullied harem and they work together to overcome their challenges. I would NOT group this with other bully romances out there and don't want to disappoint anyone expecting otherwise. This book contains bullying of the main characters but not to each other, which is the twist, a bully romance where the harem comes together to deal with it.
I have very mixed feelings about this one. I still haven't absorbed the cliffhanger/surprise & abrupt ending. Tess returns home to care for her siblings after her mother is admitted into a mental health hospital. An A student, Tess sacrifices her scholarship at a prestigious school, returns to high school where she will begin classes as the new girl. A selective group consisting of four guys befriend Tess & by lunch break they all seem to know almost everyhing about her. These guys are all very bright, considerate & Tess is amazed as well as wary of their interest in her. A mishap in class results in Tess tutoring the four & a great friendship/teasefest begins. This part of the book is so strange. We are not privy to most of the secrets each & every character holds but are introduced to the kind nature of these young men, their devotion to Tess & each other & above all their loyalties. But these guys are no angels, we know this for sure, we just don't know the whole story. The banter is very amusing, the boys seem to have a secret contest on who will win her affections first. There is alot of flirting & some "group" shenanigans but no straight sex. Book two has not been written/completed yet (to my knowledge) & I have so many questions. I'm so torn & confused & yet can't wait to seek the answers.
Lately, I've been reading a lot of bullymance type stories that feature RH in them. Impetuous by Mercedes Jade is a bit different. This book features Tess Sinclair who has moved back home from her private alternative school to take care of her twin siblings whom she hasn't seen in a few years. As soon as Tess was old enough, she moved to the school and never looked back as her home life wasn't that great with a mother who has mental health issues and a father who was a dirty cop and abusive husband. At the start of the book, Tess receives a phone call saying her mother has been admitted to the psych ward and had a major mental breakdown and Tess is needed to come home and look after her family. She transfers to the school and meets a group of Hot guys, they should be the kings of the school as they are rich, sexy and mysterious but due to their own issues and a pact they made together - the boys have become the outcasts of the school and the ones bullied. All of them want Tess and soon she will become the Queen of the Outcasts table. With her new friends help, Tess will slowly introduce them to her mother but also try and solve the mystery of what made her mother snap and hopefully get her mother home to her siblings where she belongs. Tess has always been fiercely independent, but now she must open herself and let down her walls and let her new friends help in order to save her family and survive the consequences that her father brings to their door? Find out in Impetuous by Mercedes Jade. I have to admit though I enjoyed this book, it was a very slow read for me and I had to push myself to finish it which I am glad as I did as it was an OMG second half of the book as Tess started to unravel her mother's chicken scratch clues. I am now looking forward to reading Book #2 of the Victory Lap series by Mercedes Jade.
This books had a lot of highs and lows. Some promising ideas, but poor development. The characters are pretty unrealistic and the story was all over the place. I’m not really sure what the characters’ motivations are. I found that too much information was left out. I get not wanting to give everything away in book 1, but there just wasn’t enough revelation
Unique take on the bully trope. Some mystery thrown in. The sexual interaction did escalate rather quickly. I don't mind dominant assholes but there is something in the interaction between the FMC and these men doesn't sit right with me. Still interested enough to finish reading though.
Not the traditional bully romance, but interesting. Tess gave up a scholarship to a private school and early admission to college for her family. Her mother has mental health problems and was admitted, she has bearly spoken to her 2 younger siblings for the past two years but is now back home raising them while her mother is getting the help she needs. While raising two teenagers is complicated , doing it while also paying the bills, being a fulltime student and trying to figure out what happend to her mom is hard. She met four good friends on her first day at school. Even though they are handsome, funny and should be popular guys they are looked down on and whispered about. Something happend a year ago but no one will tell her the full story. I am not a fan of cliffhangers and there is a big one in the end. This was a 4 star book for me. While i liked the story and I definitely will read the next book, it was a bit difficult to get into for me. I was given this book as an ARC for my honest review.
Tess has more secrets than the shadows have shades of grey. Showing up to school after semester started puts a spotlight on her. Something that leaves her uncomfortable. She's only back to help take care of her siblings until her mom is able to do so again but somehow she managed to draw the attention of four friends. While they have a nasty reputation, they are actually sweet guys. They help her with transportation, buying groceries, even visiting with her mom. As she's in a ward for mental disease, that says a lot about them. But investigating the scratches on her mom's back, and her mysterious words, leads her down a rabbit hole to the past she managed to leave behind. Can she escape twice? And what will she leave behind if she does manage to?
Spoilers ahead. I feel like I just read 3 different books, they all just had the same characters. There's the "anything to do with school" book, the "relationship" book, and "anything to do with her mom" book. And then, at the very end, a surprise chapter from out of nowhere, that I call "blindside you with a blast from her past". The books rotate through, depending on the setting. The male characters all read as years older than they are. Tess comes off as an innocent and rambling bookworm. And then she's suddenly not. It's like a completely different character. And, then, boom. Book over. Even a reread, knowing what's coming at the cliffhanger ending, didn't clear it up. Yeah, I read this twice before leaving a review because I wanted to be fair in my evaluation. I'm curious enough to read the next. I sincerely hope it clears some stuff up. I know I call this section spoilers but if I gave away anything that happened in that final scene it really would make me an awful person. The writing is decent, few errors. The dialogue is surprisingly well done, after you ease into the different flow. Tess has some disjointed rambles, tangents, and the guys do a lot of vagueness at first. But it picks up and takes off, leading the reader on a merry chase through a labyrinth of twists and turns. The relationship is a little rushed, a lot in some angles, especially after backgrounds are hinted at. And things solidify quickly for a non paranormal romance. This is definitely not a slow burn. Not shaming, it just didn't fit into the plot devices used. Like I said, it felt like a few books got smashed together, overlapped or something.
Unsure about my current thoughts. Waiting for them to settle before I do a final review.
Impetuous
Set the stage: Heroine is called back home because her mother who has mental illness has been taken to a psychiatric hospital, and child welfare basically demanded she come home for her younger siblings since she is 18.
She sacrifices a lot to move back home with her education. In essence, losing a year of schooling, and her chance at a scholarship college program. She meets Boy #1 at her mother's hospital due to his misdemeanor ways require him to be there. We meet the rest of the boys at school. The boys are wealthy, top high school boys, but all the boys have baggage and are outcasts in their own right. (kinda confusing. One dude did something that shunned him and his brother, and the other two were loyal and followed them. But Bad boy is really good. Good Boy has his own demons. Brawn is also all brains. The Prince has a dark dark side.)
Some drama happens and to get out of it our Heroine agrees to tutor these boys. Now they are all very intelligent. But because of the other school the heroine, as already learned most of what they are currently studying so she 'helps' out.
Here is where I got a bit lost. Chapter 1 was so confusing for me. I could not connect how the heroine describes herself with how she actually ends up acting for the rest of the book, as well as a few other items.
Second, I feel like a massive amount of this book was spent on her mother's mental illness. The author did their research and it was very informative, but I don't think a lot of the interactions or focus did much to move the story along. Parts of it, yes, but all of it no.
Third, they make a really big deal about schooling in the first few chapters, but I don't feel like it was a complete idea, concept, or really followed through with.
Fourth, their relationship. A LOT of these high school books have kids who do not act like regular 17/18-year-olds. These kids do not at all. The biggest thing though, they jump right into their RH relationship on day 1 of school. No slow burn, no conflicted feelings, no sly innuendos or individual moments that build up. It was like BAM I want you all, then this guy gives a hickey, this guy kisses me while the other guy gives a hickey. But don't forget! Gotta finish homework! Then day two they explore a LOT more than before. And shirts come off in a car with a makeout session with two guys. It went REALLY fast for me. REALLY fast.
Fith, There is some drama, some hidden secrets that are just hinted at, barely hinted at, yet one of those little secrets comes out in full force and throws a massive curveball and once again I'm left confused. Especially since our heroine is banking on the RH relationship to come 'save' her. They've 'been together' for a week.........
However, take all that in mind, it was a well-written book. I just think it had SO MUCH going on that it lost its way. I was intrigued by the guys because you learn just enough about them to keep you interested. You get to see sides of them that others don't.
Tess is 18 and been away at a fancy boarding school on a scholarship for the last 2 years. She returns home because a social worker has said that her brother and sister will be put into care if she doesn’t because her mother has been admitted to a mental hospital on an involuntary basis. Tess’ mother is bipolar and has been hospitalised several times in the past but not for long. This seems like a big change from incidents in the past where her taking of medication slipped.
In order to graduate high school she has to start her final year again because her old school had a strange semester system that meant she wouldn’t get to keep her credits for work done. At the high school she quickly meets four gorgeous and intelligent boys who stir up her emotions and her body. They seem to carry as many secrets as Tess does.
I liked Tess a lot. I appreciate an intelligent MFC, and she has that in spades. She is also compassionate and understanding of the boys and their secrets. They start to reveal parts of themselves as time passes and Tess tries to find out what triggered her mother’s mental break. I like that they are all taking things slow once they initially state their intentions.
They boys are all quite different though they seem to have wealth and intelligence in common. They are bonded through adversity, though we aren’t quite sure what the adversity comprises of as we only get hints from each during the course of the book.
We don’t get much information about Tess’ relationship with her brother and sister, which I think is a shame. Some parts of the book it felt like the author was trying too hard to show how clever Tess is. I felt the book could have employed more subtlety in how it revealed everyone’s personalities, not just Tess’ intelligence. However, I enjoyed the story and the potential for how the characters will evolve, so I will read the next book.
This switched up Fairy Tail was a doozy! So many twists! So many turns! So many suspense moments! This is the first time I’ve ever read a Mercedes jade book and I have to say I love it. Seriously fast pace and wow the contradicting characters from Cinderella is unbelievable. I love the dark prince and the strong and sweet Lucifer, the troublemaker and is a pierced bad boy/protector/Good boy, and the pumpkin that has claws. I cannot wait for the next book! What the hell was that ending! Everything was going good until that ending. But the ending was the icing on the cake because it caged and sealed me into this duology. I like how it shows when Teresa first in the psych ward then her at home trying to take care of her little siblings because it shows how she’s trying to take care of her family and adult. Mercedes jade it really shows Teresa growing up throughout the book sort of and learning her dynamic with the musketeers/Phoenix club. There was humor, romance, reality, survival, Steamy scenes, A pumpkin that totally fights wicked princes, twin angels or twin Devils, and a sweet Lucifer. I seriously hope the guys find that text and that they did not give up on Teresa. I also hope that bastion knew Teresa was lying because there romance was amazing, The groups romance was amazing. Seriously need to go read more Mercedes jade books now. Mercedes jade you rock!
All I can say is WOW!!! This book was so beautifully written. Mercedes handled so many touchy subjects with so much grace.
This book had me hooked from the first page. The FMC is such a beautiful person inside and out. She was so strong despite what life has thrown at her. Not only her, but ALL of the characters! They show what it is to truly take what life throws at you and stand up to it for what it is and push through. They truly touched my heart.
This book was a complete twist on the “Bully Romance” genre that has become so popular. It was a great change!
I can not wait to find out what happens in book 2! There are so many questions I have and suspicions I hope to have confirmed.
Book 2 can’t come fast enough. Give me more of Tess and the boys! They are SO HOT! Mercedes killed the sexy scenes! WE NEED MORE!
I usually only read paranormal books with adults. This is a na book with older themes. The main character is 18 but has lived a life where she was forced to mature faster. She moves to a small town to take care of her brother and sister because her mother has fallen sick. Mental illness. She’s left behind her school credits and early acceptance to university. She doesn’t expect to meet four guys that will ground her in the hectic pace her life is starting to take. But she’s trying to figure out what caused her mother’s recent mental breakdown. It leads to some dark corners of the small town and stirs up secrets that don’t want stirring up. Someone from her past shows up and throws everything into a tailspin. I can’t wait to read the next book. It captured my attention and made me want more. Great writing. Thank you for letting me arc.
"Skeletons should never leave the closet undressed. You could see right through them".
Nothing draws me quite as much as a dark past waiting to be uncovered, and this book definitely has that going on This book was a really refreshing and unique take on the 'bully' romance. I loved the way that the FMC is almost a protector in this book for her men which made the relationships seem more equal between them. It was very clear from the start that they needed her as much as she needed them. I loved the way this book delt with difficult themes in a realistic and well thought out way. I'm looking forward to seeing where the relationships go next and finding out more about the boys pasts. Great series opening :)
It's more like impaled, stunned, and angry I read this story too fast! Wow! I love how Mercedes' stories may have familiar themes, but are always laws unto themselves. Her writing is engaging, frustrating, unique, and fresh. I've loved every story I've read. She somehow manages to turn me on, frustrate me, and break my heart in equal measures. I will always want to read any words this lady writes. Love this new cast of characters and the mysterious and intriguing storyline surrounding them. Mystery is my first love and there's so much to unpack in Tess's world. I'm in love with everything about this story. Give the word and I'll happily dive back in! I can't wait!
I am not sure how I feel about this book. Tess was a strong woman and I liked that about her. She was feminine and small but still took no prisoners. I don't have a lot of knowledge about the foster system but I am not sure an 18yr old would be able to get control of her younger siblings that easily. This made the story of why she had to come back home a little far fetched.
Overall I would read book 2 because of the ending. I want to learn more about her father and the history there. Maddy I feel can really provide more insight to what happened while Tess was away. Looking forward to how this story continues.
Ok so I'm gonna be real honest here. I'm confused as all get out. This book had a whole lot of potential and I was so excited for this switch up on a bully RH but what I got was a whole lot of mess. If this was a bit more organized it would of been definitely worth all 5 stars but it was all over the place. Everytime I thought I knew what was going on it jumped in a whole other direction that confused me all over again. I will read the next book in hopes it clears up my confusion because i am intrigued with the concept of this story. Just wish i didnt feel so dumb trying to figure out what it means.
I don't really know I think I liked it? There was just something really odd about this book it felt really disjointed at the end I had no idea what was happening or why? The romance progression was also kind of abrupt and random. I don't think I'm going to read the next one. Maybe it was the different environments without us spending too much time in each one it just kept switching tracks randomly first we're in the psych hospital then we're in the ya school bits then we're in the bedroom scenes then we're all of sudden in the dark criminal world. I think it needed smoother transitions. I must say it was an awesome beginning though really gripping, unfortunately it fizzled out for me.
Tess (the MFC) has had to move back home because her mum as has been hospitalised with a bipolar episode. Theres no-one else to after her brother & sister except her. So she has to take over everything as well as as join a new school. Which is where she meets up with four new guys - Bastion, Warrick aka War, Kade and his twin Keir. They all seem like genuine, caring & considerate guys that want to get to know her. I cant big up this book up enough. It was so good that it honestly left me with my jaw on the floor with a killer ending. Im dying to find out what will happen next? An amazing book
If you like RH and bully romance this is the book for you. It puts a whole new spin on bully that I haven't read before, but absolutley loved! The new storyline kept things fresh and kept me completely pulled into the story. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. I liked reading about these characters stories and can't wait to find out more because there is definitely a lot more to find out. I would definitely recommend this book, it touched on some topics that aren't necessarily in books a lot and was beautifully done. I absolutely can not wait for book two I NEED more!
This story had promise but was poorly executed. If there was an editor, the author should receive a full refund. The description element is completely missing for most of the important bits and what was included was lacking. There was no character development, no relationship building and the multiple perspectives were not handled well. The overall logic was circuitous, without a preface to explain the thought process. This plot given to another author would be great but as it stands, I have no interest in reading anything else by this author.
This reverse harem brings a new life to the idea of a bully romance, where they all have each others backs nearly from the start. The characters are amazingly written, I love how there commonalities and differences create great moments of push and pull between the characters. Tess feels like a friend you’ve known forever and when the guys come into the picture you feel like finally she might catch a break. Can not wait for book two to come out! Even the cliffhanger ending seemed organic like the perfect place to stop rather than abrupt and unfinished.
Oh my wow! What a ride!! This book has all the feels. The depth of this book is incredible. I loved how Mercedes Jade has addressed the stigmatized issue of mental health and the real implications of dealing with that in real life. I really enjoyed the great witty banter between Tessa and the guys. It was seriously impressive. But that ending!! Holy Maloney!! I can't even!! When is the next book coming out??????
I really loved this book. I love Tess and the way her brain works. She is super smart and although life has dealt her a crappy hand she still pushes forward. I love her relationship with the musketeers and how much they had come to care for Tess over such a short time. I can’t believe how this ended though how can you leave us like that. I need to know what happens now with Tess, the twins, her men, her mother and that POS father. Soooo many questions!
This was a great read. I loved the information about mental illness that Mercedes Jade shared with her readers. I think it is wonderful to educate others about the intricacies and hardships those with mental illness and their loved ones face.
The characters are all amazing, and there was an awesome twist at the end. I'm dying to see what happens next.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I love how the author planned out her plot and characters. I feel like character building is the main focus in Impetuous. We meet these different characters and learn that they all have different skeletons in their closet. The author made sure to leave me with enough questions, making this a compelling read. This was an excellent read!
While this story touches on some very sensitive mental health subjects, it is beautifully written. The characters are all dealing with their own personal issues, including being bullied, but they come together to support each other. Well rounded with a gripping storyline, this is a story you don’t want to miss.
I really enjoyed this story and it characters. There is definitely a twist to the normal “bully romance” and I love it, instead of the guys bullying the MC she is the one to stand up for them. The story flows nicely and the characters are well fleshed out. I am excited to get to know more of both Tessa and the guys pasts and what secrets they are all hiding. Damn that ending, I need more.
I deleted my previous review because simply put it was a rage review and honestly I was a bitch in it. I try not to leave overly harsh reviews but this one fucked with me, that ending? Just why? But I'm going to leave it at the book had a 4.5 rating until she swapped personalities at the end even if it was a lie.
I couldn’t even finish the FIRST chapter...the writing so weird and all over the place...just trying to picture in my head what the fuck the author was describing was difficult...this should be effortless...but alas lol I could not DO IT!!!! I remember the character stating she was possibly ADHD at some point...maybe...was this the point of the random writing?! Idk....done.
