Magic

The Kingdoms of Chartile are more divided than ever, and only one boy has the power to finish the prophecy his father began.

Charlie Hill’s life is utterly abysmal. He has no friends, and plenty of enemies. To make matters worse, his father is locked up in a psychiatric ward for believing his time spent in Chartile twenty-three years ago was real.

But Charlie soon discovers Chartile IS real, and it is not the realm of fantasy from his childhood dreams. The returned kings did not leave Chartile in peace, they were the spark that lit the fires of war – a war to bring back magic, and a war the elves believe only the son of a returned king can end.

But Charlie is not his father, no matter how hard he tries to shoot a bow or ride a horse. And his feelings for Princess Ailinn are confusing, making his decisions about the prophecy even more complicated.

It’s only when the enemy of the Elven crown finally makes their move that Charlie must decide whether to let all his father worked for be destroyed or forge his own legacy in Chartile.

I received a digital arc in exchange for an honest review. This is simply my opinion on the book and is not influenced by any external factor.

There’s a stereotype about sequels, that they are never as good as their predecessor. I have to say, after reading Magic, that this is not always true. Magic is one of the few books I know of for the sequel to be even better than the first.

Here’s what you can expect while reading Magic:

• You will return to the world of Chartile, but from Charlie Hill’s perspective. Charlie is the son of Jayson Hill, one of the four prophesized kings who saved Chartlie over 20 years ago.
• Remember Piper from the previous book? You won’t be seeing her in this one. You also won’t be seeing Leo or Jack, just saying. But we do come across some familiar faces from the previous book.
• Vocabulary used in the previous book is carried over to this one (ex, Beck-and).
• Charlie’s experience in Chartile is different than that of his father. Suffice to say, he enters on his own, without any friends or familiar faces to make the transition easier. But as Charlie’s adventure continues, he makes some new and unlikely friends.
• While Prophecy focused more on the world of the Dwarves, in Magic, we explore the Elven kingdom and culture.
• The story is fast paced and exhilarating, one you won’t want to put down. A very well-written book.
• More prophecies, but they won’t be fulfilled exactly as you would think.
• Like the name suggests, this story has more of a focus on magic than on the prophecy. The magic itself is realistic and not far-fetched or ridiculous.
• There is minimal romance in this story and any romantic content is clean; apart from the violence and occasional swear, it is definitely appropriate for younger readers.
• Daniel and Ailinn – Very well developed characters, the one thing I wish is that Daniel’s past and background were explored a bit more.
• The story itself wraps up nicely, but it looks like there is going to be a third.

Overall – simply amazing. Definitely recommend for anyone who loves fantasy and adventure.

“Heroes are not made by their great deeds of individual triumph. They are defined by their small acts and influence upon the world.”

As the blurb says, Charlie Hill’s life is abysmal. He’s bullied constantly and his dad is locked in a mental ward because he believes his time in Chartile was real. But Charlie is about to find out just how real Chartile is. Charlie is not so good at everything he tries to learn in Chartile (unlike his dad Jayson), but he doesn’t give up, and he just may find out who he is and what it means to be a hero along the way.

I was sad that Chartile fell into war after Jack, Jayson, and Leo left at the end of the first book. I would have loved for a happily ever after for the world, but alas, that was not to be. But there wouldn’t be a second story then, so I suppose it’s alright. I absolutely loved Magic! Charlie is such a wonderful character. He sure grew a lot over the course of the story. I loved his relationship with his horse Cinders. She was so cute! I also really liked Ailinn, who is as firey as her mother Piper was. The story is well written and I didn’t want to put it down! I really enjoyed entering the world of Chartile again and learning more about its magic. Kashna, the qarveena - basically a winged panther - was a cool addition to the cast. I would love to meet him in real life! I highly recommend this series!

I received an ARC from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I received a copy of the book from the author.

I started this book with much lower expectations than I had with book 1. I think that this book, just like the first, seemed to have interesting ideas but didn't enjoy the execution.

This book also has changes in POV without demarcation which I found really confusing and had to re-read many paragraphs to make sense of what was happening.

I found that this book was very slow in terms of action and it took a long time for something to actually happen. I had difficulty connecting with the characters. It felt like relationship happened instead of developed. Not just the "love-at-first-sight" like relationship between Charlie and the princess but even Charlie's relationships with his guards and beck-ands.
I didn't understand why Charlie's vision was miraculously better when he traveled to Chartile but Leo still needed his glasses in book 1.
The end didn't make much sense to me and still left me with many questions.

I still think the world that was created by the author seems interesting, although this book didn't explore this world as much. I don't think I'll be continuing to read this series.
