Throne of Deceit is by far my favorite from the last batch I have read. Short and easy to read. It also has a few surprises hidden within the pages. I look forward to the next installment.

Throne of Deceit is the beginning of a fantasy series that promises to take readers on a journey as a young girl finds herself on the cusp of a war that she never saw coming. She is the daughter of her father’s mistress and she is exiled because of what she holds inside her. The pieces and players are coming together to spark what is to come.
Throne of Deceit by K.N. Lee is book one in the Wicked Crown Series. The author introduces us to Elise, a young girl who is the daughter of the king, but he refuses to acknowledge her. Her and her mother have been exiled to a castle far from her father, but where one might thing “out of sight out of mind” that is not the case. A darkness is growing and her life has been made a part of the deal. Elise’s family holds secrets that will not be revealed until a tragic event transpires.
I found the characters and storyline truly engaging. The author absolutely knows how to start the story off with a hook! The world that the Master of the Dead is trapped in, his desire to be free of it, and his willingness to do what he must to be free of it…it sets the stage for the dramatic events to come. I honestly was anticipating the dark twist to come, but I guess I’ll have to wait a little longer, because I know that he doesn’t truly mean to fulfill his “promise.” I felt so bad for Elise as people scorn her simply because of her family. If it’s not one thing it’s simply something else.
There isn’t anything that I don’t like about this book. I did feel at times that a lot of time had passed when it seemed like things were supposed to happen sooner, but it still all comes together well.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I am eagerly looking forward to what is going to happen next. Elise has an uphill battle to fight, but I’m glad that at least she will not be taking it on alone.

Spellbinding! A wonderful beginning to this new fantasy series! I enjoyed the different creatures and concepts throughout the story. I can’t wait to see what happens next with Elise and Destan!

This story had potential as this author can create intriguing stories full of depth. Yet here is this story full of promises yet not developed in this book which would make this story much much better.
I hope book 2 will be more developed.

I found this book on a Book bub newsletter and figured I'd give it a try because it was free and by a NYT bestselling author.
It didn't take long for me to realize that something was wrong. The story was underdeveloped, the prose amateurish, and the pacing weird. After doing some digging, I found that K.N. Lee does not appear once on the NYT Bestselling Fiction list between 2013-2022 (the period in which she has been actively writing) nor does she have functioning websites or social media accounts.
And so yet another self-published book joins my DNF pile.

What an awful book! I had read somewhere that this book was a "well-written start"... yeah, sure, if you're used to having massive holes in your memory and forgetting most people in your life - like I have done with the characters in this book. This book was to me a skeleton template of what could be a fantastic book if it was ever finished. It had everything: magic, dragons, a bloody demi-god that was more like a passing comment, romance, a crazy king, and a path to a full confrontation. And then it falls incredibly flat and you're left wondering if you picked up the sample Kindle version of the book versus the actual full version. There is no full version - this was it, brace yourselves! As a reader, I actually want to read how the protagonist grew into her character, or at least a little more about the demi-god, or at least just give me more description about the DRAGON! In this case, it happened off-page between one chapter and the next, leaving me utterly confused as to how it happened, when it really happened, and how the emotional change impacted the protagonist. Right now, she is just an underdeveloped character that seems to just do what other people want! This was an incredibly disappointing experience for me as a lover of this genre. However, what the book does is make you annoyed enough to write a review - so, at the very least, it has prompted a big discussion. I'll let you decide if it's for the right or wrong reasons.

I had difficulty rating this book, it was between 2 or 3 stars, so I’ll settle for 2.5 here. It was a very short read, and fortunately captured my attention enough to finish it and see what happens, but it was forgettable. The summary set up an intriguing plot-line, however, I thought it was poorly executed, and expected more. I wasn’t exactly sure what I was expecting from this short read, but it was fast-paced, and perhaps too fast. There were simply not enough anchors to have me excited to read the next page.

The book is a coming of age short-story, told in multiple points of views, however, Elise, a bastard child of King happens to be the main character. In this world, some had magic, and others didn’t. The King wants nothing to do with Elise, or her mother and has even bargained away her soul for more power, and magic, for immortality. When it comes to light that there is more to Elise than her just being a mortal girl, her grandma sets her on a mission to dethrone the King. Included in the book is a potential love-interest, but it doesn’t go very far. Destan is hired to spy on Elise, but there’s more to him than what meets the eye.

This book wasn’t edited very well, which is shocking considering it’s so short, but I like where it is going. I only hoped there was more to it. More character development. More plot, and structure. There are still so many unanswered questions that I have, as the world is beginning to develop. The characters felt particularly clichè to me, and the plot itself was predictable, so I hope that for the next book I can gain a further insight into everything left unanswered here, and perhaps see more of the evil that was promised. The plot shows promise for future instalments, however, I’m not sure how intrigued I am to read it.

This was a very boring book for me. I got about halfway through before I just had to put it down.

This is a very entertaining fantasy/paranormal romance set in a world where magic is known to humans, and a tyrannical wizard King is determined to preserve his legacy despite the cost to his kingdom. Elise is the illegitimate daughter of that king and as such she’s lived a secluded life in near poverty, away from the royal court and unaware of her true heritage. As evil gains a stronger foothold in the mortal world, is Elise capable of opposing it? Will she be able to alter the path taken by her father before it’s too late? I enjoyed Elise’s transformation into a powerful, confident young woman with a new kickass attitude and look forward to the continuation of her adventures. The story is well written with well-defined and appealing characters. There’s plenty of drama, suspense, supernatural action, adventure, secrets, plus a few surprises, along with the slow dance of a blossoming romance.

A job ride to take in and a very well done unfolding of events as to who and what was to be .

Realized that there are yet to be events and mysteries yet to be revealed in book 2 and on to book 3 !

But look forward to see how it all shall play out !

I am going to enjoy the discovery of one's own magic and how to use it, and the continuing revelation of the gard for the Prencess continues to surprise her with seeing her Guard as so very much more !

Not to mention his dragon is taking them both off the grid

Now they will learn to work together, and who knows yet how grandma will add her own detention to the fight between good and bad of their world !

I'm going for book 2, but trying to go moderate pace to chew it not too fast to enjoy it as long as I can !

Fantastic beginning of the series!

It is my first book of K.N. Lee and I love it. And I'm very sure not the last one. I really enjoyed the writing style and how easily I immersed myself into the story. The words are flowing effortlessly through out the pages and the plot is very well paced. There's no time to get a breath. I'm in love already with Elise and want to know what's next for her as it looks like it will be one hell of a ride.
There are fairies, demigods, dragons, a lot of magic, mysteries, unsaid truths, princes, handsome fearless heroes and so so much more... What else could I want from the fantasy book? I've got all what I bargained for and can't wait to get even more from the next parts of the series.

This first book introduces readers to the main characters (the good and evil ones), and we learn so much about them. Elise grew up alone and imprisoned with her mother and grandmother, away from the king (her father). She is a bastard, and the king wants nothing to do with her. In fact he has bargained away her soul. After the death of her mother, her grandmother must show Elise her true heritage and teach her about her magic, so that she can protect herself and dethrone her father. Destan, a powerful mage but pretending to be just a servant, is discovered by the King and uses Destan to spy on Elise. But will Destan bow to the King's wishes and kill Elise, or will he save her? We will find out in the next book.

Quick and Easy Read

This book was a quick and easy read. It was a bit confusing at the beginning but more than halfway through things began to clear. However, I feel like this book was just the beginning of a book. More like a novella. The author/publisher really missed an opportunity to make this a really great book by cutting it short. There wasn’t even anything going on yet and the book ended. It was 200 pages of set up and little action or plot. Maybe it just wasn’t to my taste as I have been reading larger fantasy novels lately, but I feel this would have been better with more content instead of being cut short.

Okay so this book made me want to read it but the author should really have edited it in literally any way. Just one proof read would do,,,
There was quite a bit of grammar mistakes, sentences that didn’t make sense, there were some sentences that straight up were not finished ???
Also omg some parts were SO cringey to read like what the hell lmao. There was one part where Elise prays that her dad won’t be as bad and then her mother starts crying and says that the world doesn’t deserve her. Like what ? That’s not a warranted reaction ? She literally just said something every single person in the kingdom wishes. 0/10 logic right here

Overall rating: 4.3

Book 1 does a great job setting up the scenario for the potential heir to a throne. This author does wonders bringing these characters to life quickly. The storyline is sound and the writing skills of this author is on point, nevertheless for me there was a few short bursts of lag here and there. I have pretty much decided this warrants a reread just because I know I have had many life distractions as of late. Still find this book an easy recommend. KN Lee gives us a story about Elise. An evil king's daughter who has been fed lies and kept from her mother. Intrigued? You should be because this story contains, intrigue, secrets, lies, and magic. What more could you ask for. It's a little shorter than I'm used to, but a good story that leaves you wanting the next book.

This is an entertaining paranormal romance. Elise is the evil king's illegitimate daughter and is kept away from her mother and her true heritage. This story has secrets, intrigue, magic, and plenty of surprises along the way that kept me fascinated and turning the pages. I'm really looking forward to book two.

A young girl, coming of age, Elise was a bastard child of a King. Some people had magic and some didn't, but the people that had magic like the King wanted more power and magic. Elise and her Mother was ostracized by the King to live somewhere else with little money. Elise thought her Dad had forgotten her but little did she know the plans of deceit and /or death. Either way the King was up to no good! This author keeps this story exciting.

An an exciting new supernatural series of magic and other-worldly epic battles. This one starts out slowly, not to be confused with being boring, and quickly moves to intense action, ending on the cusp of a monumental battle. Enemies are identified and alliances are formed. I can't wait to read the next in the series!

Surprisingly disappointed

I really wanted to give this story 4 stars verse the 3 I gave....the editing just was not good, I had to reread some sentences 3 or 4 times to figure out what was being said.
I liked the story, the characters were a nice surprise, but again....I just couldn't get past the bad editing

A young girl Elise was coming of age from a King that didn't want any thing to to with a bastard child. Elise and her mother was ostracized by the same King. Some has magic and wants more but some doesn't. Elise thinks her father has forgotten her, but no, the plans he has for Elise no good will happen and her doesn't want any part. The author keeps the story exciting.

What an intriguing book. Adventure, with twists and schemes that leaves you wondering what will happen next. KN Lee has a way with words that has you wanting more and more. The book was just too short for my liking and it ended with a clifhanger! I’m really looking forward to book 2.

It was sufficient; however, I was expecting more depth or shock-value from the summary. I wanted to see the depths of darkness and sinister in Drefen and King Caden. BUT, I'll bet that's for later. It's okay for a short read, and the plot shows promise for future installments.

Not quite an Epic yet

Short, slow, but filled with magic, intrigue, budding romance and the promise of adventure to come in the second fantasy in the series. Not sure I am curious enough to buy it when it comes out.

Better than expected

hardly time to get invested

The story is promising but is hardly long enough to really invoke a desire to buy the next book. I am only just getting invested in the characters and the book ends… disappointing.
