The Caretaker

Rate this book
One lonesome cemetery.
Two introverted oddballs.
Four ghosts with nothing but time on their hands.

As the caretaker of a small-town cemetery, Rick Holliday is an ordinary man with one extraordinary ability—he can communicate with the dead. Suffering from a debilitating stutter, Rick yearns for a simple life of peace and solitude. But the dearly departed residents of Serenity Grove fill his days with conflict, pranks, and ridiculous demands.

The residents learn to come together when Emily, a pretty new visitor, begins visiting her grandfather’s grave. Rick finds it harder with each bumbling encounter to deny his feelings for the klutzy yet painfully shy beauty.

Convinced that the two socially awkward misfits are a perfect match, the residents do everything they can to bring the two Livers together. But Rick may lose everything when a revelation comes to light—along with a secret that could tear them apart forever.

The Caretaker is an absolute gem—one of those books that manages to explore serious situations while simultaneously being full of humor.

Rick Holliday, reclusive loner, manages a cemetery and is forced out of his self-imposed solitude when he falls for a new visitor to the graveyard. Complicating matters are Rick’s lifelong stutter and self-image issues as he grapples with whether or not he’s “worthy” of finding love. So, this in itself makes a great story, but if you throw three hilarious and lovable ghosts into the mix (because, oh yeah, Rick can see dead people!), you get a story that’s truly and utterly unique. Each character has their own rich backstory, and the way the “Livers” and the “residents” intertwine is deftly written. Plus, the dialogue is snappy and hilarious, the ending is wholly unexpected, and the serenity of the setting is so well rendered that the cemetery becomes its own character.

A wonderful debut from a talented new author.

This is a nice book. Not exactly what I expected, which was it's own charm. I was interested to learn that the author wrote her first draft of this during 2016 NANOWRIMO.👏 Very fitting as 2019 NANOWRIMO is going on now.😁 I can recommend this if you'd like a story with a few unexpected plot twists, a unique style, and a paranormal romance.

This was a wonderful read! The characters are so beautifully developed and the story twists and connects in wonderful, yet tragic ways. It's hard to believe this is Windy Prasert's first novel. I hope we get to read more of her works and that she brings us back to Serenity Grove soon! It was hard to put this book down and I'll be recommending it to anyone I know who enjoys reading.

Started out super slow and I almost stopped reading it, but the longer I kept reading the note I couldn’t put it down. I wanted to keep leaning the stories about the characters both dead and alive. What to see what else this author comes up with.
