She was small and quiet
peaceful and free
She lived with her cats
and fairies in the trees

She spoke not a word
but felt very deeply

It wasn't known who she was going to be

But she grew and she grew
and along the way she blossomed and shone
day by day

The stars, the moonlight
the sunshine and rain

These are all that she became.

Loved the accompanying artwork and enjoyed some of the extremes in the prose.

This is the second book I’ve read of hers and the font choice / layout / size of it takes away from the poetry vs adding / supporting it.

It’s a book of love quotes. I wanted to see some rhyming, structure or depth but there is none.

*Note the following review incorporates 2 books as 1 of them is not on Goodreads. Pretty sad it doesn't count towards another read to reach my target :)

Moonlight - Gemma Troy

Gemma Troy's Moonlight is the 2nd book following her earlier book Heart Lines. While her earlier poetry examined the themes of love and pain, she believed love was something worth hoping for and she captivated readers with her amazing natural finds on the page. She continues that in Moonlight with pretty pieces from the outdoors to complement her works. Moonlight explores the ecstasy that love puts us under and that beautiful time of a cotton candy sky and two lovers in their own world. Nothing else matters. Gemma Troy explores the embodied experience of love and also uses beautiful symbols and motifs of flowers, the landscape and weather to do so. If love is like how Troy details it, its definitely worth being in that lavender haze.

Favourite quotes:
"You are the only one that can turn my heart into a field of poppies."
"If I live to regret anything it would be every moment your hands left my skin."
"If I am honest I will never love anyone the way I love you."
"She waited for him still and silently she weathered a great drought and monsoonal rains her skin burned in the sun her hair became the colour of the sand her bones formed mountains changing the land and when he washed ashore she was no more he lay down on her skeleton of broken bones and waited for her lost soul."
"Your scent is all I know how to breathe in."
"I think you came from the heavens love like this doesn't exist."
"I want my true north and that is you."
"I wonder how the sun feels when she misses her moon."
"I have been promised that dreams come true so I dream of you."
"My body bathed in gold paint your hands like brush strokes."
"Your warmth gosh I miss it your hands on my hips your mouth against mine your weight on me conversations with you in bed your scent I just want to breathe you in."
"I want to spend more days like this with me curled into the crook of your neck while your hands play a symphony on my skin drifting in and out of consciousness drunk on each other's love spilling our dreams out onto the sheets sleeping under the blanket of the sun and laughing with the moon until dawn forgetting there is a universe that exists beyond just the two of us in our own perfect world."
"You say my name and sunflowers on the other side of the world turn their faces towards me."
"I bring the rain and you bring the the sun together the universe has nothing on us."

Paper Thin - Gemma Troy

Paper Thin takes a different direction compared to her earlier books. While the first two centre a lot on the quest for love and being under its spell, this book takes a different direction. Gemma Troy explores the themes of fragility, growth, identity, perseverance and rejuvenation. She is open to her brokenness and her fatigue but later as her collection of poems progresses, she comes rising from the ashes with a renewed confidence and determination. Gemma Troy also writes about being a poet and although she questions if her work is worth it, she believes she has something to offer. And if it were up to me, I hope she continues on because these vulnerable and authentic pieces are truly one of a kind.

Favourite quotes:
"Tomorrow will always forgive you even if you never do."
"You were born different because you fell from the stars."
"My heart is a battlefield."
"I now understand why a flower wilts and eventually dies."
"If you pick her flowers make sure they are wild like her heart."
"My poetry will teach you a thing or two."
"So wear that dress with those heels put on red lipstick and hit the town you are so goddamn beautiful when you forget there are other people around."
"Because we all die half lived."
"You are strong like an eagle with a heart fragile like fine china and fierce like a bonfire."
"My poetry will always be about how my soft heart tore open to see the sun."
"I am worthy of a poet but I question my gift."

I read this book back in February so apologies for the brief review! Time has really flown by so I’m trying to catch up on my reviews... 😅

This is the second book that I’ve read by Gemma. The book was presented really nicely, with of the poems being presented on a white background with a photograph of an object beside it (e.g a flower or something from nature). All of these photo’s were taken by the author Gemma, at her home on the Sunshine Coast (how cool! 😁)

A lot of the poems are about love, heartbreak and self growth so if you’re
looking to try some poetry and support an Australian author + read something thought provoking I would recommend this one!
