Demonic Indemnity

Rate this book
Demon boss. Bloodsucking coworkers. Supernatural insurance is scary business... As the first human in 3,200 years to work in the Special Investigations Unit of Crimson Seal Insurance, Tim Lovecraft knows his days of processing run-of-the-mill claims for werewolf maulings and poltergeist home invasions are over. SIU is where they investigate the toughest and scariest claims, like supernatural identity theft (aka demonic possession), exsanguinations (total and partial), zombification, and death or injury by cursed artefacts of all kinds. Despite the new job, Tim’s life is not easy. His new boss is a literal demon with no regard for the company’s scent-free workplace policy. His brother is a lazy, unemployed vampire who won’t move his coffin out of Tim’s apartment. His coworkers are a motley collection of werewolves and ghouls. And his mother won’t stop trying to set him up with psychics from her chain of spiritualist day spas. Tim badly wants to make a good impression by solving his first case. When he gets caught between a powerful cult trying to resurrect an ancient entity and a demon mob boss who wants him dead, Tim knows he is seriously increasing his odds of statistically expected mortality. Demonic Indemnity is another hilariously horrific tale from Craig McLay, author of award-winning international bestsellers Village Books, The Donnelly Tontine and other books you should read immediately.

Every so often in a sea of random kindle freebies one finds a genuine treasure. This was it for me. A charming, light, humorous supernatural adventure…in insurance.
To paraphrase a showtune, there’s no business like insurance business. Certainly not when it involves demons, possessions, etc. But this is a new world or more like a wildly imagined version of the existing one, where all manners of demons, ghouls, vampires, etc. coexists more or less in peace with regular people.
Tim Lovecraft is one of the regular ones and he’s about to become a first of his kind to be employed as a claims investigator in the Special Investigations Unit of Crimson Seal Insurance. Sure, his coworkers are all of the supernatural variety and his boss is, quite literally, a demon. But it’s Tim’s dream job and he is going up in the world.
The thing is…his very first case, a seemingly straight forward possession claim, turn out to be quite a doozy. And Tim, the natural born investigator that he might be, is unwilling to let it go, so he begins investigating and uncovers and a huge demonic conspiracy of the first order.
Throw in a fun cast of players, from Tim’s ridiculous parents to his munch of a munching vampire brother to his once and maybe again love interest, and this story is sure to charm your fuzzy socks off.
But it doesn’t squeeze by on charm alone. Oh no. This is actually a legitimately good story. It’s well written, intriguing, funny, exciting, engaging and wildly entertaining. And, most importantly, the worldbuilding in here is awesome. Seriously awesome. It’s meticulously crafted and tightly woven to follow its own inner logic and, no matter how crazy things get, the plot stays cohesive and realistic…within its terrifically unreal confines, that is.
I don’t normally read this sort of supernatural fantasy, because so much of it tends to go silly to stupid, but this was lovely and tons of fun. You don’t need to be a specific genre fan to appreciate good storytelling. Reminiscent of Christopher Moore, which is a high praise indeed, this was exactly the right kind of light reading one can enjoy without their intelligence being insulted. Excellent introduction to a new to me author. Recommended.

I think the biggest surprise for this one was that it actually made an insurance company interesting. I liked Tim and the variety of support he received throughout. Mystery, Chaos and supernatural. Bit of a cult break the seal thing going on. Will be interesting to see if Tim gets his brother out of the apartment. Favorite character was Stake because why not.

DNF, stopping at 17% after peeking at the last chapters. It just isn't holding my interest. The style is too dry, and I'm not feeling some of this over-the-top world, either. You'd think the latter would energize the former, but it doesn't.

I'm surprised to give this book a 5 star review. I picked it up for free from a Freebooksy email, not expecting much, but I thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent reading this novel. If you're expecting a super serious novel then this might not be for you, but the quirky, tongue-in-cheek sass in Demonic Indemnity is just a ton of fun.

This book reminds me a lot of Monster Hunter, or Japanese RPG video games in general, in the sense that they are often very over-the-top and don't take themselves too seriously. As luck would have it, I recently purchased the latest Monster Hunter game and have been loving it, and I feel like that made this the perfect time for me to read Demonic Indemnity because it put me in the right mindset to enjoy it. This book has a lot of clichés and tropes, but they're used ironically and it's a fun story, if a bit predictable. It's kind of like a big summer blockbuster movie: sure, it follows a lot of predictable beats and you know how it will end, but it's a lot of fun getting there.

The setting is really interesting. Even in urban fantasy, I don't often see a world so integrated as this one. Most authors tend to segregate the natural from the supernatural, but here we're given a glimpse at what the world would be like if demons, vampires and ghouls were common, integrated into society. It's refreshing having a hero who's not worried about "What if the muggles discover our world?!"

This book definitely isn't trying to be comedy, but it reminds me of Douglas Adams' work in the sense that it isn't too serious and you can tell the author had fun with the world. The plot beats are believeable, and I stayed up too late several nights to read this book, not because I needed to know what would happen (I had a good guess anyway, as it's rather predictable) but rather just because I was having fun and didn't want to stop.

If you've read this far, I'm sorry. I tend to ramble. Tl;Dr - buy this book. If you're even considering it enough to read a review, I think you'll enjoy it.

Clever story of a human insurance investigator in a demon filled world.

Tim investigates insurance claims in a world where humans and monsters of the supernatural variety live together. This supernatural fantasy detective story is fun and clever on multiple levels, and the first case Tim is given to investigate is a doozy.

If you like movies like Ghostbusters or Men in Black, or the absurd fantasy style of Pratchett, then this book might be for you. I enjoyed it, for the most part. But I had questions by the end. Without giving too much away. Tim and his friends infiltrate a gang in an attempt to save one of their own, but the author leaves how they were able to do it a complete mystery. And that, for me, was a disappointment.

Loved it

The story takes place in an Interesting alternative universe where supernatural beings mingle with humans. In a world like this you need special insurance adjusters and investigators. This is where Tim comes in.

The story had interesting characters, A vampire brother who can't seem to get off the couch, and lots of explosions. It also was pretty funny. I can't wait to read the next book.

The blurb for this one grabbed me immediately. I love a bit of Urban Fantasy and could you imagine the claims you'd get to investigate if you worked for an Insurance Company in a world where all those horror story creatures live alongside humanity. To be honest, I fully expected to be disappointed in this book as my imagination was already well away with demons and vampires and werewolves...Oh My! What I didn't expect was to be swept up into such a vividly realised fictional world that completely sucked me in.

Our lead character, Tim, is a bit of a bumbling buffoon but quite charmingly so. His frustrations with his brother sharing his small apartment and the mess he leaves behind (honestly, scabs crumbs down the couch, drained blood bags on the counter tops who wouldn't be mad?) are relatable to anyone who has shared living space with anyone ever (even if the issue of blood bags hopefully has never arisen). His Imposters Complex at work, especially since his promotion, are realistic too - it just happens that as the token human in the SIU he is probably right as it does all smack of positive discrimination and his co-workers make sure he knows that.

There are issues with editing in the book but it such an enjoyable novel I actually managed to overlook plot holes, grammatical foul ups and even mid-sentence personnel changes. Who cares if Tim suddenly changes his name for a sentence, I found that I didn't. I did wonder how he kept getting himself in to such diabolical (in the most literal meaning of the word) scrapes and why a mere Insurance Investigator would go to such lengths to investigate what happened at the back street psychic parlour and then I remembered - insurance companies never want to pay out so he was, after all, just doing his job.

I am looking forward to reading more books by this author as the overall novel is fun, fast paced and put a huge great smile on my face.

When I first read the blurb, I was a little worried. As someone who works in insurance, I thought the notion of demon insurance would hit a little close to home (or, rather, to work). But I was curious enough, or maybe self-sadistic enough, to try it anyway.

And I was right for the first couple of chapters. There were several paragraphs of contract and coverage descriptions that could have been straight out of my resource books. If, you know, my resources had anything to do with demons.

Fortunately, most of that was a form of world building. Past those first few chapters, and the glossary of insurance terms—that again, was eerily familiar—came a rather interesting mystery. Why did the probably-fake physic have to file for identity theft? (That’s identity theft by a demon, not a hacker.) And why did her shop practically melt in fire?

And does someone in the Special Investigations Unit of Crimson Seal Insurance have it out for our protagonist, Tim? After all, he is the first human like, ever, to join the Special Investigation Unit. And that makes some people (and creatures) unhappy. All in all, the blurb’s description of a hilariously horrific tale is completely accurate. I have since added the next two books to my TBR, and look forward to them.

Very good

I love Craig McLay's books. His writing is very funny and also quite dark at times. It's easy to read and has so many little references to movies, characters etc that sometimes it fun just trying to spot them. This time we are with Tim who works in insurance but the difference being it's a world where vampires, demons, werewolves and allsorts live alongside humans. After starting a new job in the company he finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy that could change everything. It's humerous, fascinating and just incredibly enjoyable to read. Until I found him by accident I never read any books remotely like the ones he writes and would have thought never to consider them at all but I'm glad I took a chance. His characters are all ordinary people in ordinary situations, yes even in this book! And you can always identify with them. Really give him a try it's totally worth it!

If you like mythological or urban fantasy, you might very well like this book.

Story is set to happen in fantasy Earth where vampires, werewolves, demons and many more living with humans. In such world, even insurance jobs turns out to be very interesting. This story is just one case work of a human in insurance company whose team mates (and boss) are non-humans.

Things I liked much in this story :
> Environment setup - Author have set the grounds clearly in very beginning of story and that helped us dive deep into the book.
> Characters design - Interesting and intriguing character designs.

Though some parts of story are predictable, there were few surprises as well.

Protagonist got away with literally anything and that seemed a bit of stretch.
But hey, maybe in a world where your boss is a demon (literally. If it's figurative, it's non-fiction :P ), someone might be able to get away with anything!

I really like this book. It is amusing, well written, funny without being silly, and always interesting. It was more paranormal action/adventure that the description implies. It was funny and if you know much mythology or horror movie lore you will laugh even more because of many of the character or place names.

The story revolves around Tim Lovecraft and his first investigation in the Special Investigation Unit of Crimson Seal Insurance, the place to go for all your paranormal insurance needs. It is supposed to be a simple open and shut case of a fake psychic claiming she burned down her business while possessed by a demon. But, being the first human in SIU in 3200 years and conscientious, Tim decides to look a little deeper. That's when all hell breaks loose, almost literally.

Initially I was turned off by the overtly descriptive phrases in the book, where it feels like you're not reading what Tim (the protagonist) is doing/thinking/saying, but rather reading the author's thoughts and feelings about the world. The interludes can be funny but I was definitively on the fence until about 1/3 of the way through.

That's when you notice the shift in gears (or at least when I remember noticing it), and start to grok it, start to enjoy the book for what it is. It's clever, its funny and silly and an all-in-all entertaining ride. I was sad to realise I had, so quickly, reached the last chapter. I have become a slow reader but definitely impressed myself with how fast I finished this one. Bring on another!

I had a complicated relationship with this book. I’m trying a new system replacing entries in a To Be Read list with Amazon samples on my kindle/iPad. Almost 300 just now. I’m not sure how this guy got to be a candidate, but I read the sample expecting it to fall apart at any point — shiny vampires, falling into some established rut. It didn’t and I enjoyed the characters so I got the book still halfway expecting it to go bad, but it didn’t.

This is a world where the supernatural has always been present and most folk are just trying to get by. Alive or not you need a job to have a place to stay, have to dress for the job, and all the rest.

rather a lot of fun, and kudos for the fresh insurance / urban fantasy mash up. Office politics, demon cults, a lazy vampire mooching brother, and cases to solve - our everyday protagonist, Tim, is just a rather average guy trying to do his job investigating insurance claims. The world building was excellent and imparted effectively. A host of red herring suspects are thrown our way keeping the reader guessing. And excellent secondary characters round out Tim's support team - Stake, Tabby, Carmilla et al.
Fun, action, light and creative.

Well written and fun

Overall this book was well written and enjoyable to read. Occasionally the author goes off on a tangent indirectly related to the plot; but it largely flows like a stream of consciousness where the narrating Main Character (MC) starts describing an event in detail because the memory was triggered by some recent event or thought process.
There's only a handful of characters to worry about and the whole thing takes place over a few days. In a world filled with demons and werewolves, even the insurance business can be a thrill!

Quirky title and premise that caught my interest on Kindle.

It follows a token human called Tim in a specialist insurance under-writting department called the SIU.
This is set in a world of all the monsters, ghouls, spirits and djinns where insurance against being possessed, home insurance against your house being built on a plot of high demonic activity or even a straight forward case of being bitten by a vampire without consent.
Who knew working in insurance could actually be interesting?

Started reading as a bit of a filler book before my next big one as it was relative short (<300 pages).
I found I was laughing to myself more often than not at all the different hi-jinx, and also when we stumbled on the main underlying plot.

I've got the second one now, so look forward to continue the series.

Attention: warped sense of humor required

I had to give this a 5 because the humor and creativity in this wacky book was divine. Loved Tim , the brother all of it . I've had a lifetime love of horror movies. Especially had and goofy ones. This was all that and more. From what we do in the shadows , true blood , warm bodies and supernatural this book is great. Oh please make this into a movie or series .. It was a delight to read. I really didn't expect it to be this well written and good.

I wanted to think this book was silly but have to admit it was very clever. All the little details made it. The throw away lines about vampires eating packs of Scabs, the description of various types of demons. And I rather enjoyed the protagonist who somehow made me think of a slightly bumbling, but rather smart English detective. (Nobody in particular, just the genre). Was pleasantly surprised to find the author offered a free Kindle copy of the next in the series. Naturally I downloaded it and hope to enjoy it as much as this one. Thank you.

Surprisingly good.
It has become so common to come across stories where assorted supernatural creatures exist in the modern world interacting with us normals. This is another one where our protagonist becomes the first human to work in the special insurance group whose policies are for such supernatural creatures.
The story involves quirky team members, unusual insurance situation an assortment of other characters such as a lazy vampire brother. Throughout the story is clever, interesting, and with good plot development, much better than average for this sort of book

OK, so it is not Dickens. It was however, an entertaining and easy read. It was fast paced, humorous, and quite well written. The dialog, an area that most new writers struggle with, was well written and felt natural. At least as natural as you can get considering the subject material. The world the characters live in seems a little silly at times, but it still made for a pleasant light read. I would be interested in seeing what else Craig McLay has written.

Werewolves, Vampires, and Demons Oh My!

I liked this book because it was so different from anything out there. The author uses many new and unique ways to tell a rather believable tale that's unbelievable. This book has any number of strange, weird characters that take on a human visage. Vampires, werewolves, demons, succubus and more help Tim the insurance investigator solve his biggest case. If you like the weird aspects of life you'll like this book.

An interesting story laboring under the burden of a boring MC

Demonic Indemnity is an urban fantasy leaning heavily towards the darker elements like demons, vampires, etc. It could have been a real page turner if the MC wasn’t deliberately made to be as boring as possible. It might have been saved if the very interesting plot points had broadened him in some way but that wasn’t how things went down.

First in a series.

Fun.

I chose this book because it was different from anything I had been reading lately, and I'm glad I did. The story and characters were intriguing and engaging with just enough humor to hold my interest. I look forward to the continuing adventures. This book is definitely worth reading.

Took a bit to get into the story

I did enjoy this story. There are a few typos but nothing to drive you crazy about. Once I was able to get into the story, I really enjoyed it. It’s well put together and does flow, for some reason it just didn’t grab me at first. I will read more by this author in the future.

Hmmm kind of campy

Honestly I had a hard time not not finishing this. The humor and action kind of jelled in the end so I might (stressed) read the next in the series. It has potential and since it was the first I should give another a try. It took me a long time to finish so I am going to "cleanse the palette" with something else for now. 2.5

Loved!

Poor Tim! For being human he sure is tough! I love this supernatural world and get such a kick out of his co-workers. I really like his friend, Stake, as well. It may have been an odd encounter at first, but I think it worked out well for both. Plus he hooked back up with the woman he really does care about. Now on to the next book!

A humorous story starring an insurance investigator in a world with vampires, werewolves, ghouls, demons, etc - how could I not love it?

Lots of humorous references in the naming of things - characters, locations, products, etc.

I'll be looking for the sequels next, to add them into one of my to-read queues on Amazon.

A free book about an insurance adjuster doesn’t seem like a good bet for a fun read, but when the the world includes people, vampires, demon, zombies, werewolves etc, and said insurance adjuster is the first human to be in the Special Investigations Unit and he wants to do a good job - well mayhem and hilarity ensue

Fun, quirky paranormal read

If you like your demons with a side of humor you will like Demonic Indemnity. Tim has a new job with his insurance company investigating fraud. Turns out the demonic possession is real and it leads to an apocalyptic prophesy. What is an honest fraud investigator going to do when witnesses keep disappearing and demonic cults are tracking him?

I thought that this overall was a pretty good read. Set in a world where demons; djinns; werewolves; zombies, vampires; ghouls; etc.; live publicly amongst us, and the prospect of insurance coverage for supernatural happenings, added an interesting aspect to this light hearted and occasionally amusing story.
