The intriguing events keep readers glued to the pages even as the emotional turmoil captures the heart with some unexpected twists adding spice to the story.
Mari and Chase’s story kept me turning the pages as it had an intriguing plot with some interesting elements but while I enjoyed the story, I felt that something was slightly off, which I think had to do with the way that way Mari seemed ignore reality and the danger they were in.
A perky mermaid who loves pink, a grief stricken former Navy diver and a psychopathic bad guy make this steamy fairy tale come to life. And while the story was predictable I couldn’t put it down. The author brought these fantasy characters to life for me and I enjoyed every page.
I REALLY wanted to like this book. It has all the right makings to be a good story. Interesting back story, drama, supernatural elements, romance. It just fell short. For starters our heroine just feels insta-Love towards the male lead. He’s grumpy and sulky and she even admits they have never really conversed beyond pleasantries. Even so, they both run around just constantly picturing the other naked. Both of them are a bit annoying in their constant “woe is me” mentalities through the whole first half of the book. Another issue I had was that the conversations seemed inauthentic. Most didn’t really bring you any closer to the characters and I found myself at the midway point not caring whether they loved or died. The plot for me was good, but the author didn’t unravel it well. Overall writing quality was acceptable, though whether that is due to author talent or a good editor-who knows? Despite the “best selling author” tag, I’ve never heard of this author and this book leaves me with no desire to read other books by her.
Wow! This was an amazing book. This was a romance worth reading. These two have loved each other for so long, and never realized the other felt the same until the storm throws them together. Mari seems a bit scattered because she keeps drifting off into fantasies of what she would like to do with Chase. Chase on the other hand does his best to squash any such thoughts he has towards Mari.
The title of this book is so appropriate, because they are both damaged in some way. Chase more obviously. he is afraid of the ocean, and the thought of even going down onto the beach gives him panic attacks. He is also afraid to get close to anyone, lest he lose them. Mari feels oppressed by her obligations to her mermaid tribe. Her fiance terrifies her. Both Chase and Mari are just looking for a little happiness.
I utterly loved this story. Mari was an adorable character with her love of pink, bubbly outlook and hilarious habit to have lurid fantasies starring her and Chase at the drop of a hat. She has a great imagination, despite Chase being a grumpy-butt he is still a sexy beast, and her thoughts are amusing. It is easy to see that he is a good man suffering from grief and guilt, who tries to be stoic, but cannot resist Mari’s charms. Also, when it finally does happen, they are totally hot together ... like really hot. I highly recommend this book as it has a bit of everything, humor, suspense, and some sizzling hot sexy times. Mari is a mermaid who just needed to stretch her legs before committing to an arranged marriage.
Chase is a retired Navy diver who has sworn off the sea after the death of his brother. Who also happens to be Mari's landlord.
Mari has been in love with Chase since she saved his life. Hey, this sounds familiar... but, a twist on the old tail (pun, not an auto correct gone wrong) Chase wants nothing to do with the sea! He is even moving as inland as possible. He just has wait for the contracts to be signed and he is headed for a farm, or ranch, or anything that is nothing to do with the water.
Mari isn't ready to go back to the sea. But, there is the sale of the building her shop is in, and the impending storm (both medaphoric and meteorological) about to hit.
First of all I very much wished the author had gone for a Cat 3+ storm for this book because literally 70% of this book’s plot takes place while they’re prepping for, waiting out, and dealing with the aftermath of this storm, and it’s not really that believable that the entire island would evacuate and be terrified when it’s just a Cat 1 on the way, even though it eventually makes landfall at a Cat 2. Buildings in hurricane prone areas are designed to survive these smaller storms—important shelters are often designed to withstand Cat 5s even—and the building in question is on stilts and has shutters on the second floor, so it’s clear that this is one of those buildings designed with storms in mind. People in coastal areas often get so used to hurricanes that they won’t evacuate for anything less than a 4 or 5 landing right on their doorstep. I get why the MCs were freaked out, the FMC never having been on land for one, and the MMC being afraid of the ocean, but it doesn’t make sense why the island was deserted and the firefighters were unavailable 24 hours after the storm had passed.
I wished the MCs had spent more time with the historical research plot, because I wanted to see the villain get shown how wrong he was, but in the end the FMC’s mom just kinda showed up and believed everything they said, and the villain was apparently on the outs with her anyway? That was weird. I thought the confrontation with the villain should’ve gone a lot differently considering how unhinged he was, and we never really got an explanation for the MMC’s mystery tattoo (just that it’s mer thing??) and we never got to see what their life is gonna be like now that he knows she’s a mermaid. We spent so much time eating sandwiches and boarding up windows, no time on the poor man’s therapy for his panic disorder!
I enjoyed this story. It was different than other books that I've read. I think it had a little bit of a different take on the merpeople aspect of things. Everything was still recognizable but still a little different. Pretty much the entire story takes place on land, not underwater. It was well written and this aspect of things definitely made sense with what Chase had dealt with. Mari has a major thing for Chase but doesn't think he sees her that way at all. Chase is dealing with stuff and so he doesn't want to get involved with Mari at all. It's not that he doesn't see her or isn't interested. They get thrown together with a hurricane coming in and everything that was building between them starts to come forth. The sex is fairly explicit. It's blended into the story fairly well and not over the top. I enjoyed the characters and it would definitely be interesting to get to revisit this world and see where a story could go next. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
I love mermaids hence why it seemed hood at the premise but it bored me to the bone. I adore the persistence and all of the FMC and the tales of the tattoos but apart from that, i don't see the chenistry with them and with Inna in the picture it became more absurd how their love was just there instantly. More like lust to me and i am all for smut but this isn't even smut so i was betting on the plot and gosh the choices they all made made me want to pull my hair out, so so obviously cliched and bad choices to make up the story. Gosh the title of the book did not even make sense onlt the pier or something was storm damaged, but her shop? The bar? Hell even the ferris wheel stood tall and safe. The place went down with Arson not with the Storm 🫠
If the storytelling was better this would have gone off prettier.
I was intrigued by the blurb for this book and I did like it. I thought this concept and the characters had a lot of potential. In the end, I felt that it failed to make the most of that potential though. Do not get me wrong, there were things I liked about this book. Mari and Chase for one, the outside dangers they were exposed to another and the great chemistry I thought they had. My big complaint was I just felt it lacked the depth of emotion I wanted it to have and honestly, more details couldn't have hurt. There is some drama and a few twists, but with a time frame spanning only a couple of days, neither the characters or the story had time to be fully developed. This is my candid, voluntary review.
Just finished reading this book. I loved it. Chase is a diver who lost his brother in a dive. He can't go near the water. Mari us the mermaid who saved him, but could not save Chase's brother. She owns the store in the lower level of the building that houses Chase's bar and is owned by Chase. Now a severe storm is coming and Chase is thinking of moving. Can Mari get him to stay and to notice her? She has been in love with him since she saved him. If she can get him to want her, will she be able to get him to stay? She has to stay near the ocean, or she will die.
This was a well-written, entertaining book. Mari wants to be independent of her tribe, her family and her betrothed. She rents retail space from Chase, a bar owner and former Navy diver who lost his brother in a freak diving accident and now fears the ocean he once loved. A hurricane comes to the island, and they have to work together to try to get through it. I mostly enjoyed this story and would recommend it to others.
To be honest, this was more of a 3.5 than a 4, but I really liked the idea of the storyline more than the actual story. Mari seemed so focused on having sex with Chase and getting him to marry her and save her from Inna, but in reality they had barely spoken since she saved Chase from an accident. It seemed like every inner thought we saw from Mari was about Chase's body. Chase ran hot and cold to me, obsessing about getting off the island. Overall though, it was my first mermaid story and I liked the premise.
I enjoyed this sweet, somewhat hot story between a mermaid and a diver. Oh and throw in the psycho who thinks Mari is his and that Chase should die because of an old "tale". There were parts that seemed slow, but keep reading because other parts had me ummmm hooked... Mari wants her freedom, but wants to stay close to the sea. Chase wants to get as far away as possible due to the death of his brother. Can these two work out all the reasons they should not be together to find their HEA?
I loved this book. It was honestly a really good one. My only complaint is that the ending was rushed. Insert bad guy then bam its over. Well more like insert mom and bam its over.
When I started reading I figured out the ending but not how the story could get there. Interesting plot development. Will there be more to Mari and Chase’s story?
Read Aug 2024 A grumpy ex-driver with grief issues and PTSD and a pink sunshine mermaid. This book was okay, the pacing was a bit off for me, it was really slow for the first 70% or so of the book and then the ending was super abrupt. I wasn't a fan of either character really and I didn't get much chemistry between them, so I didn't ever get pulled into the book. An average 3* read.
I was actually surprised when this book finally showed up since I tend to have problems with PDF books. That's the one thing that kinda annoys me about Net Galley. They don't let you know ahead of time what format the book is in. It showed up after I tried sending it and got the message that said I couldn't. I'm not sure how that happened but I was just in the mood to read a book about mermaids. I haven't really read many mermaid books.
Anyhoo I was little hesitant to keep reading when I saw a warning and a disclaimer. I have to admit that it kind of freaked me out. I was sure if I should be afraid, amused, or both. When I kept reading and found nothing freaky I assumed it was a joke or maybe this publisher has other books that require that kind of warning. I do think the part that takes place in the amusement park could kinda apply to the warning a bit. I can only think of one other book that had a warning label and that was The Merciless which has a very pretty pink cover but the contents are much different from what you'd associate with pink.
The prologue is explained later on in the book so keep reading even if you get confused. I would have liked to know when Luke died. This took place before the story. I assume it wasn't too recent because Mari had her shop and the bar was about to be sold because Chase just couldn't deal with the death of his brother and surviving since he was rescued by Mari the mermaid. A storm is on the way so Chase is boarding the place up and getting it read before he leaves the island. Talk about a bad time to tell Mari that he's sold the place and she'll have to find a new place for her shop. Mari is a bit of a rebel and considering the guy she's been betrothed to since they were little I don't blame her for wanting to get away. I really hate Inna. He should be called Imma Psychotic Controlling Asshole.
I also figured out something that I found to be pretty obvious but I was enjoying the story so it wasn't something that made me want to throw my book against the wall. I couldn't have done that because it was an ebook for starters and I would never do that to a book. I'm the one that apologizes to a book when I accidentally drop it. Maybe it was meant to be obvious. I do like Kerry's writing and would check out another book by her. I would also like to point out that there are sex scenes in this book. That doesn't really bother me as long as there's a story and it isn't just all sex. I'll admit that I skimmed the last one but there were four so it wasn't like a series that pops to mind where a really great character has pretty much been turned into a nympho. So if you're not big on sex scenes this might not be for you but if you don't mind some you should check it out.
The story takes place over a couple of days. Chase ends up stuck on the island because the ferry gets cancelled. Mari stays with him and things heat up. So I guess you could call it instalove but I will admit that if I'm enjoying what I'm reading I will overlook certain things like that. Things got pretty heated during those days they spent together. The title certainly could be applied to the storm but it can also be applied to Chase as he struggles to come to terms with the things that have happened and the feelings he's having despite his strong urge to just run away and never be near the ocean again even though he's always loved being near it.
Mari, a mermaid who chose to live on land to escape her arranged marriage to a merman, spends her time running a little boutique and lusting after the man whom she met when she rescued him from drowning. She believes he is the hottest man alive, desires every piece of his body, and believes they are both perfect for each other. Only he is afraid of water, acts like she does not exist, made plans to sell and move somewhere west, away from the ocean, and she has a rabid fiancé waiting in the wings who is losing his patience with her delays to their arranged marriage. Chase is a former Navy diver who owns the bar above Mari’s shop that he started with his brother, who died in a freak diving accident that he blames himself for. As a result he also suffers from PTSD, is deathly afraid of the water, and feels undeserving of any happiness or love. Before his brother’s death, the ocean held good memories for him, now he cannot bear to look at it and makes plans to move away. Having to tell the beautiful, bubbly girl who rents the shop below his bar that he has sold his property and that she has to clear out is the last thing he wants to do Mari is full of life and happiness and believes she is in love with Chase and will do anything to convince him that his place is next to her beside the ocean. Chase has become quiet since his brother’s death and believes he is not worthy of a beautiful girl like Mari, besides he has made plans to sell his bar and leave her and the ocean behind. A big storm puts a crimp in his plans which in turn gives her an opening she needs to sway him towards her thinking. The storm is the least of their worries as it seems Mari’s fiancé has plans for them both....
Mermaids, a hurricane, revenge, love, and a cute gift shop/bar is what you'll find when you read Storm Damaged.
Chase is torn between a life by the sea where reminders of his brother surround him and starting a new life in Kansas away from everything he's ever known. Mari is hopelessly in love with Chase, only problem is he's a human. She is promised to a merman back home in the sea.
Being an only child I can't imagine the pain of losing a sibling especially one as close as Chase and his brother were. They were brothers, best friends, and business partners. So I can sympathize with him for wanting to move far away and began again. The only obstacle in his path is Mari who he is beginning to have feelings for.
On the same token, Mari is escaping her mermaid life and her arranged wedding to a violent evil merman. From what I saw of him, she is much better off independent on land away from all that drama. She is quirky, fun, and easy going. The perfect match for Chase who always seems so serious and focused on running his bar.
I'm rating Storm Damaged 4 out of 5 stars because it was a fun under the sea contemporary love story. This is the first mermaid romance I've read since The Little Mermaid Disney book I read growing up. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more "under the sea" shifter books.
I received this ebook from the author for free in exchange for my honest review.
I discovered this author when I read a novel she did with another author I enjoy reading. I wasn't too sure at first about this one though because not too many authors can write good ones that feature mermen. Since I did like her style thought may as well because can always go into something else if not. Sneaky author that she is she will slowly come from behind and snatch you into the story. As I am reading about Mari and Chase with how the storm is coming and the whammy news he delivers to her I am a goner. I do so like when the fantasy goes after the what they consider not normal with it being a no no. Mari has the short end of the stick too with what she thinks is her future blah but love has come to the rescue for her. The reader will be held in a slight suspense on will they survive more than a storm that is. They also have more than a storm as a obstacle but you will also be given a bit of a surprise with what transpires at the end that will leave you clapping for joy.
Mari decides to become independent on land. She leaves her mother, her fiance - the wedding was arranged- and her tribe’s expectations of her. Chase’s brother died from a freak accident now Chase fears the ocean he once loved. Chase id suffering from grief and guilt- Chase is a retired Navy diver. Mari has loved Chase since she saved his life. Mari runs a small shop. Chase acts as if Mari isn’t there and fights his attraction to her.Chase owns a bar over shop. Mari is a mermaid and her merman fiance plans to get her back in the ocean and married to him. Chase always seems to be in a bad mood while Mari loves the color pink and has a cheerful outlook on things. This story was okay but didn’t have the wow factor for me., Mari fantasized about Chase and wouldn’t give up on him or them being together. I liked the characters alot in this story. I didn’t hate this story just wasn’t a favorite of mine.
Kindly provided with an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review......
Wow, I am so rocking my inner Disney Princess Ariel with this tale.......because I loved it !!!
This was Mari and Chase's book and basically is a brilliant tale of longing, hidden feelings and mermaids !! You see.....me + this book = Happy mermaid tale (no pun intended ;0) )
I was very pleased when things worked out for these two.....Chase I wanted at times to dunk his head in the Sea to get him to alter his mind set......He would not loose Mari.....he just needed to take a chance !!!. Mari was a tiny bit flighty, but she just was so in love, she did not always see the warning sign's before they came crashing down. A short but solid read.
Well done Kerry and many thanks for this opportunity xx
I have to confess.. this was my first mermaid book. Right from the start I was pulled into this story! Mari is works and runs a gift shop on a beach. Chase is her landlord.. and the man she wants to be with. please forgive this review.. like I said it was my first mermaid book! Mari saved Chase from drowning, but could not save his brother. Chase has a really hard time about his brother. Mari is involved in a a arranged marriage to Merman, and Mari is having none of that. Chase drops a bomb that he wants to leave the beach and sale the bar he owns because he cant deal with his brother's death anymore. Mari tries everything in her power to get chase to stay.... They have some hot and heavy days and nights, but Chase still wants to leave. All in all this was a great book, it kept my interest. and had a HEA!
