This is a solid 4.25 stars. It's slightly more than "I really like it," and a little less than "it is amazing." Super solid read.

This is the sequel to THE ROSE WEAPON. Comparatively speaking, the writing in this book is at a whole new level. However, it is not merely the style, but also the pace and overall character development that intrigues me. Both books are great reads. There's no denying that. Yet, WHEN EMBERS END really highlight's Shultz's ability to grow and develop as a writer.

The complicated dynamics of Hosperan (the main character) and his father's relationship are teased out over the course of the entire book. This leads to a heartfelt climax that wraps up this conflicted aspect of Hosperan's life. There are definitely "human aspects" to this book that take center stage at times (i.e., the tension between dealing with past perceptions and current realities, and the emotional toll that tags along). There are also unexpected reveals that, while still falling in line with somewhat classic tropes in the genre, are enhanced by the systematic, and for the most part, fluid, consistent pace of the book. This helps with some of the larger reveals, because most readers don't have time to think through all the angles in the same way that one would while reading a more drawn out, slower paced work.

Again, this is a great read. I'd recommend it to anyone who has enjoyed Shultz's work in the past, or who is a fan of grounded fantasy.

This was a terrific sequel to The Rose Weapon. The characters grew so much in this book and learned some extremely important lessons that transferred well to opportunities for reflection in my own life. It is a lot of fun to experience F.C's growth in writing with these novels. Can't wait to see what's next!

A very good sequel. The story really “explodes” and the world is a lot more fleshed out after the second installment in this series. We also get to learn a lot more about what makes hosperan motivated
