Koniáš #1 part 1/2

Na ostrzu noża. Tom 1

Rate this book

W obliczu klęski każdy rozsądny człowiek spakowałby manatki i ruszył w siną dal.

To uczta złożona z dań, doskonale doprawionych mieszanką adrenaliny i namiętności.

Dla smakoszy.

Zdecydowanie zbyt rozciągnięty wątek przygotowań do wyprawy. Napisane przystępnie, fajna ta fantastyka.

I have a troubled relationship with Miroslav Zamboch - I loved 'The Sergeant' and disliked the Bakly novels - therefore I did not know what to expect from this book, which is why I took only the first volume with me on holidays. And I regretted it, since I finished the book in two days and wanted to read on as soon as possible. While it starts out as a typical fantasy mercenary story, it quickly turns out to be very nonstandard with the nature of the quest being very surprising. Although the first volume deals only with preparations of the voyage, it was by no means boring. The characters seemed a little flat at the beginning but quickly turned out to be very complex with believable flaws and quirks.

My main gripe was with the main character, I can't say I didn't like him but he was described in a way that left a lot of secrets unsolved. This isn't a bad thing, it surely makes the character seem intriguing, but it also makes it a bit hard to understand where his various talents come from. The one thing I didn't like was the world building - while I'm usually OK with scarce details about the world, in case of this novels we were left with little to no information about what are those forced and nations and oppose the protagonist and 'his' undertaking.

All in all, it was a really good book and I certainly want to read the second volume.

Good plot and a very distinctive hero. Simple and light. Just right when we don't want to delve into complicated intrigues;)

Good read, the characters are well written, plots engaging - I liked it and finished 2 parts in a raw, started continuation just after reading the last words.
