Ruth Chou Simons has done it again, this time with her husband, Troy, alongside her.

I have read and loved Ruth’s other books, and I’ve been on her launch teams before, so when I saw she had a new book coming out, this time centered on families, I knew I needed to get my hands on it. I’m so excited for this book to be out in the world.

Foundations: 12 Biblical Truths to Shape a Family is inspiring, convicting, encouraging, and necessary.

I was fortunate enough to receive an advance review copy, which I read through in basically one sitting. I will definitely be reading it again and again, and I’m excited about going through the daily readings with my boys this summer as we transition to our summer homeschool routine.

I have been a Christian since I was a kid, but I know as a parent I have always felt pretty inadequate when it comes to leading my kids in worship and bible study. It’s a part of our daily homeschooling rhythm, but I lacked confidence and assurance that the work was worth it. When kids are distracted or ignoring me or talking over me, discouragement is easy to fall into. But Ruth and Troy helped ease my fears. They emphasize over and over that families are shaped one day at a time through the word of God. We make time for what’s important, and if rooting our kids in God’s word is something we desire, we will do it. Day in, day out. I loved the GK Chesterton quote they included-- “anything worth doing is worth doing badly.” It won’t be perfect, but time spent in the word is never wasted.

Ruth and Troy aren’t writing this book in a vacuum, either. They are parents to six boys, and have spent years in both ministry and education. They know their stuff, but they’re also so incredibly humble. I’ve had the privilege of watching them grow their ministry over the years, and they haven’t changed. They’re down-to-earth, open, and honest people.

With practical advice alongside solid biblical teaching, Foundations is a wonderful resource, which explores 12 foundational truths which will shape your family. And it’s such a gorgeous book, too. Its pages are graced with Ruth’s beautiful water-coloring. Her books are not just troves of wisdom, they’re works of art.

Foundations hits shelves March 3, 2020. Pre-order your copy now.

If you don’t already follow Ruth Chou Simons on social media, you should. In fact, I’m not even sure what you’re waiting for! Aside from her art being an absolute feast for the eyes, the content below it is a banquet for the soul. God-honoring words pour forth, the reader becoming the beneficiary of God’s work in Ruth. I never leave her page without a healthy dose of encouragement!

This is why, when Ruth and Troy (her husband) cast the net for their launch team, I jumped in. (I even reactivated my Facebook for the occasion, which is a big deal!) What are they launching, you ask? Their newest book baby, Foundations: 12 Biblical Truths to Shape a Family.

Now that my husband and I are parents, I think a lot about raising children who, by God’s grace, love the Lord and are obedient to His commands. I think on what family devotions should look like in our home, what it entails to teach our son about God and about honoring Him with our lives. It’s such a personal thing; the tools that work for one family might not work for the one next door. As I’ve read through my advance copy of Foundations, I have tried to imagine this book being used in a variety of scenarios: big families, small families (like ours), using it with children who are in various stages of development . . . I’ve even pondered if I could have used it as a resource in my middle-school classroom. And you know what? I can’t imagine a scenario in which this book can’t work.

The Simons, using the wisdom God has given them in parenting their six sons, have created an exceptional resource for families (or teachers!). Here’s what to expect when you get your copy.

What to Expect

This beautiful and perfectly-sized book (it is a comfortable fit in your hands) comprises 12 resolutions, biblical truths that are imperative for walking the Christian life. They aren’t grouped this way, but I found the resolutions to fall into three categories: loving and honoring God, loving your neighbor, and fighting sin. It is incredibly clear when you move from one resolution to the next, as each section is marked by a wonderfully earthy green cover page, complete with the resolution to be explored in that section and the watercolor art we know and love from other GraceLaced offerings.

Each resolution has five brief, but meaty, devotional readings, for a grand total total of 60 readings. I admit that, at first, I was skeptical that much could be accomplished in the small space allotted for each reading, but I shouldn’t have doubted the Simons! They start each reading with anecdote that presents a metaphorical circumstance, something most people–even children–would have encountered in some way. This bleeds seamlessly into the related spiritual issue, which is stated clearly in a way that most readers should easily understand. After examining the outflow of the issue (I’ll give an example below), the reader is fed truth to set them on the right path.

By way of illustration, let’s look at one reading from this resolution: “Set your mind where Christ is and on all that is good and true.”

The reading begins by discussing the perils of riding your brakes (they’ll eventually fail). Anxiety, the topic at hand, is parallel to riding your brakes, in that worry doesn’t lead anywhere constructive. The Simons address why anxiety is a problem: what we fail to believe about God when we worry and what the consequences are. Then they give Scriptural evidence that we are commanded not to worry, and they offer encouragement to trust God instead of leaning on our own control of a situation.

Yes, there is that much meat in a devotional that takes about two minutes to read! But it doesn’t end there.

Each reading accompanied by three things:

To Dwell On: This is a succinct sentence that drives home the main idea as clearly as possible. (As a teacher, I gave this quite a few praise hands!)

To Discuss: These are two easy-to-understand questions that prompt introspection and lay the groundwork for heart-care. (After all, God is not concerned with outward appearances, but is concerned with the heart.)

To Memorize: Finally, there is a short Scripture verse that is related to reading and meant to plant the word in your heart through memorization.

How to Use this Book

Once I stopped reeling at the sheer volume of truth in each short reading, I realized something else: You can use this book in any way you choose. Whether you are just starting family devotions or you are seasoned experts, this book can be folded in. This book could easily accompany other family worship resources, and finding both classic and modern hymns to accompany the readings would be a piece of cake. A few ideas (not an exhaustive list!):

Use one devotional per day, for 60 days, as a way to start the new year (or a new life season).

Move intentionally through one devotional per week, meditating on the truths therein, journaling about it, and working on the memory verse for seven days. This would make the book last longer than a year, as there are 60 readings.

Camp out in one resolution each month, making the book last exactly a calendar year. (Personally, this is how I plan to utilize it when I read it for a second time, as it would helpfully come alongside a Bible-in-a-year reading plan. When the year ends, start again!)

Align the resolutions with a school-year calendar and use it as a mealtime conversation starter or a character-building curriculum (if you teach in a school that supports that, which I did).

Or . . . you could do whatever you want and works for your family! Take as much or as little time as you’d like and structure it in a way that suits you best!

The Bottom Line

I’m a huge fan of all things GraceLaced, and I think you will be, too, if you’re not already. This latest volume is beautiful in many ways, but especially in the truth it conveys and the enjoyment fostered by the work of Ruth’s artistic hand. Foundations releases on March 3, and I encourage you to grab your copy today!

I love the Simons family. They’ve been an encouragement to me for years! My husband and I read through this together, and though it did spark some good conversations and offer some helpful + specific encouragement in shepherding our children, we didn’t love it. It’s meant to be a family devotional, so I think it may be good to read together as a family once our kids are older. I enjoyed the podcast for this more than the book!

“Families are shaped one day at a time through the Word of God”. - Foundations

This book was amazing. I absolutely loved it. This book goes through 12 key truths on how to shape your family. It was biblically rich. I pray that as a parent I can pass down my faith to my kids. This book shows that knowing Jesus is a relationship that we must cultivate daily. There was so much wisdom on this book.

This book is divided up in 12 different chapters. Some of the chapters discuss topics such as: hiding the Word in your heart, walking wisely with Christ, and cultivating praise, prayer, and thanksgiving. Each chapter is divided up for 5 days. Each day has a devotional, something to dwell on, something to discuss, and a verse to memorize. I loved the layout. Very practical.

There is also a podcast that goes along with this book. I actually listened to that 3 years ago and it was fantastic! I even listened to it again because of the wisdom and common sense parenting style that Ruth and Troy convey. I highly recommend that one too.

If you’re looking for a gospel centered parenting book that always points to Jesus, look no further. I hope you are as encouraged by this book as I was.

Ruth and Troy Simons wrote this book from voices of authority and vulnerability. This isn’t a book that will make you feel worse about all the things you aren’t doing as a parent, it feels more like a friend cheering you on from a neighboring trench. The wisdom that is found in the introduction to this book alone is worth diving head first into it.

“‘It takes time’ doesn’t necessarily mean that change comes slowly (though it may!) — it means that things that matter require a sacrifice of time. Time that you sometimes can’t find. Time that seems to flip away. Time that’s occupied by the must-dos of life. But if your life is like mine, you can’t afford not to make time to be in the Word. Deep relationships, maturity, growth, a disciplined life… these things do not just happen. The reality is that we demonstrate what is important to us by what we make time for.”

“Sometimes we parents want a formula—a magic prescription that will ensure well-behaved, happy kids and a God-honoring home. But there are no formulas or prescriptions that ensure such things. There’s only a call to know God and be transformed by Him.”

Foundations can be used as a family devotional experience or an individual one. I’m so grateful for their encouragement, for the grace to admit that they too are work in progress, and for their wisdom and insight for how to press deeper into knowing the Lord. That is our greatest call and the greatest gift we can give to our children and anyone else we encounter in this life. I cannot suggest this book highly enough!

I so wish our family had had the benefit of such a tool as this book Foundations by Ruth and Troy Simons. Having a meaningful family worship time has felt forced, dull, and unattainable. We never even really knew how to begin before we were quitting. The Simons' have laid out a wonderful format and set of principles to help guide you in forming your own routine of worship unique to your family. These 12 resolutions are foundational to helping children, parents, grandparents and even individuals in "becoming stronger followers of Christ who obey His command and fruitfully live out their faith at home and with others." These Biblical foundations are not a list of do's and don'ts but a call for our hearts to be ruled by the Word of God and His love. Each week has 5 days of exploring and engaging one of the 12 foundations. This is not a format that requires everything to be perfect but it does take intentionality. "When they see that you love the Word and God and the Practice of prayer and that you love them they'll be inclined to pay attention". Get excited. This is going to change your families in amazing ways. PS this would make a terrific wedding or baby gift.

Troy and Ruth Simons share Biblical truths that they refer to as "resolutions" which they seek to instill in their family. Chapters consist of 5 short daily devotions that can be done as a family or individually. Each day you are given a thought to dwell on, a couple questions to answer and a verse to memorize.

I read this book on my own as I have very young children. I look forward to reading this together at some point. However, the resolutions are something I can begin instilling in them even now through my words and interactions with them. I feel like one of the most important truths that Troy and Ruth try to impart is that my faith should be lived out in front of my kids every day.

This is a great book for anyone who wants their children to build an authentic faith in Jesus as they grow.

Foundations: 12 Biblical truths to Shape a Family

Ruth and Troy Simons have co-authored a lovely book to help families of all shapes and sizes grow and learn together.
Foundations gives twelve biblical resolutions to help build a firm foundation in each family member.
Each resolution has five bite-size portions complete with a short reading, two discussion questions, a thought to dwell on, and a Bible verse to memorize.

"Sin is failing to believe God's rules are best and choosing to live by our own rules instead."

When I read this definition of sin I was totally blown away. Truth written in a way that my heart and mind can grasp at the same time will take up residence there, and hopefully be a continual reminder to me.
Each resolution was taught in such a clear and concise manner, while also going deep enough to leave the reader or listener with points to ponder.

I cannot imagine how helpful this resource would have been to my husband and I as we were raising our family. Nonetheless, we can share it with our children who are now parenting our grandchildren!
If you are passionate about family and pointing children to Christ this tool will help you in that journey.
Whatever phase of life you find yourself today, it is the right time for Foundations! It will help you grow in Christ and better share His Word with those around you.

I listened to this audiobook as part of the Challies 2020 Reading Challenge (✔️ "a book published in 2020"). It's really intended to be a daily devotional for families. I thought they did an excellent job teaching and creating discussion questions about foundational biblical truths that families with kids of varying ages can understand, learn from, be challenged by, and discuss together.

This devotional is very good. I think it would be great to revisit in a few years when my kids are a little bit older. Probably geared toward a family with children ages late elementary- high school. It includes thoughts to dwell on, contemplative discussion questions, and scripture to memorize.

I couldn't think of a better pair for people (and parents) to write this book than Ruth and Troy Simons!
This devotional for families was not only beautiful to read but it was also stunning to look at! Every page brought new beauty, both in words but also the stunning watercolor art that Ruth has become famous for.
If you are a parent, or even if you aren't a parent but have children and young people in your life that you hold influence over, this is such a wonderful book to have on the shelf. I know that we will certainly be pulling this one off the the shelf more than once to go through!

Interesting book, with 12 weeks of daily devotionals. I read it with my wife before bed, and it created a fun experience for us. Overall, I think this was more designed to be done as families (with kids), because most of the reflection questions were quite trivial.

Book rating criteria; to help objectify my ratings.
1. Will I read it again?
Maybe, but if I do, it'll be with my kiddos.

2. Would I recommend this to others?
Eh, maybe. I think this could be a useful read for families wanting to create a consistent Bible chat experience as a family.

3. Am I smarter, better or wiser as a result of this book?
No, nothing really profoundly new from this book.

4. Was I entertained while reading this/it kept my attention?
Yes, it was pretty enjoyable, and each day was pretty short, so it didn't take much time.

5. This book was just the right length?
12 weeks was pretty long, and took a lot of endurance to get through. I think 8 weeks probably would have been better, and would have allowed us to be a little deeper.

"This book is more than a regular devotional. It’s a family guide. The book is divided into twelve chapters ( 12 principals that should guide a healthy christian family towards God) and each principle has a 5 day devotional.
I love that this book is so simple that anyone can take it and directly apply it to it’s life. It’s as simple as that. You don’t have to be a theological schooler, you just have to want more for yourself and your family.
The illustrations are delightful and they give the book more of a sentimental value.

Ruth has done it again! And this time her husband, Troy, has come alongside and together they have co-written this wonderful new book entitled Foundations: 12 Biblical Truths to Shape a Family.

Foundations is a beautiful book, I mean, how can it not be with Ruth doing the artwork, but more than that the writing and the way this book is set up is so encouraging and helpful. It is based on 12 resolutions (ex. Love God above all else and with all you’ve got; Hate Sin especially your own; Walk Wisely that Christ may be visible) Each resolution is then split into 5 days/devotions. Each day has a reading, a main thought to dwell on, multiple discussions questions, and a memory verse.

One thing I really really appreciate is how Ruth and Troy managed to not have the daily readings over the heads of young ones in a family, but the older children and adults are not talked down to either. The questions are not cheesy, they are simple but thought provoking.

My kids range in age from 8 to 16 and this is going to be a fantastic resource for our family. Starting the resolutions with our relationship with the Lord and then moving onto how we should be relating to and treating each other is so good. We’ll be spending more than 24 hrs on each day in the book because we want each day’s thought to be dwelt on for longer than an actual day. Our plan is to go through 2 or 3 days in the book each week.

Guiding a family in the Lord can be so hard. This book isn’t going to make the walking out of your relationships with the Lord and your family/community any easier, but it will help you set your foundations and guidelines properly. I’m looking forward to the discussions that will be happening and hoping that these Resolutions will become not a list of rules but rather ways to remind ourselves of who we are being built into and together with.

“...Family worship is the intentional tuning of hearts through remembering, praising, believing, honoring, and exalting our holy God as a group of desperate people needing His power to love, forgive, encourage, and exhort one another.” (Quote from the “Family Worship 101 section of the book.)

I loved this quote as I think it’s also a great definition of worship for any group of believers who meet together. Although this book is meant to be used for family worship, there are many aspects of it that are great reminders for all believers.

I wish we would have had this book during our parenting years. The devotions are beautifully written and are just the right length for family devotion time. There are practical tips on how to have a family devotional time and how to engage the whole family’s interest. I believe that not only will the children benefit from the instruction in this book, the parents’ hearts will be touched as well. I was challenged just reading through the book for this review.

The art work is beautiful and adds much to the appeal of the book. Each day’s writing has a devotional and sections entitled “To Dwell On”; “To Discuss”; and “To Memorize”.

I’m looking forward to hearing about the impact this book is going to have on the families that use it. It would also make a thoughtful gift to those who are training their families in their Christian walk.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

My husband and I made a plan for our family's activities this year which required us to evaluate if we are prioritizing the most important things for our daughters (and ourselves). We go to church regularly, our girls participate in faith-building programs during the year, and we talk about Jesus in our home. We realized, though, that we have not been truly intentional at helping our girls apply all the great things they are learning to struggles that come with daily life. We want to help them build the framework for a faith-based life, and to live out those concepts as part of our family and in their other relationships.

Enter Troy and Ruth Chou Simon's new book, Foundations: 12 Biblical Truths to Shape a Family, which came into our lives at the most perfect time.

This beautiful book contains a series of family devotions, grouped into twelve Biblical foundations that help us evaluate how our faith is translating into our daily lives. Each devotion is short, but packed full of compelling questions and applications for young children on up to adults.

"When you apply God's truth to your deepest burdens as a family, you'll find that the gospel isn't good news just for salvation but for every moment, great and small, of your daily lives."

Foundations is a great resource to incorporate these conversations into your family's day. Find the cracks of time in your schedule, gather your people, and dive in to discuss these simple but powerful truths.

Foundations by Ruth Chou Simons & Troy Simons is such a wonderful book about laying foundations in God's Word. Whether you are single, married, have children, or no children, I highly recommend Foundations! The basis of Foundations is laid out in the introduction where Ruth is sharing how she was "flustered and angry" from exhaustion from a child who was a horrible sleeper. Ruth shares how she would see "Troy getting out of bed to spend time in the Word", and she asked him "How can you afford to get up and read your Bible? I'm so exhausted and fed up with the lack of sleep!" Troy's gentle answer was "Babe, honestly, I'm not sure if I can afford not to." This is so important because Troy has hit the nail on the head...We desperately need God's Word daily applied to our lives.

Ruth and Troy share 12 foundational truths from God's Word concerning loving God , sin, hiding God's Word in our hearts, being an encourager, thinking of others as God does, etc. Very important truths that every Christ follower needs to hear and apply in our lives. Another favorite quote..."God's Word is not a magic pill that keeps you from sinning. Instead, when we store it up in our hearts, it floods us with truth, filling us up with the gospel's good news melody--so much so that it's the one song we sing." Do you want this to be your "one song"? I encourage to you to get a copy of Foundations and start applying these foundational truths today!

"Foundations is as truth-filled and profoundly accessible as it is wonderfully written and stunningly beautiful. Each Foundation is rooted in Biblical truth and backed up with scripture which is presented at the beginning of each Foundation. Each of the twelve foundations is broken up into 5 very short, “daily” readings that also encourage discussion and further individual thought and scripture memorization throughout the day.
One particularly profound reading for me was on anxiety, stating, “...Thinking anxious thoughts is like riding our brakes. Worry is false security that can comfort and slow down our fears for a while, but in the long run, it leads to disaster. We weren’t meant to stop ourselves from going off the road by worrying. Worry causes us to doubt God’s faithfulness. It smothers our faith and robs us of the peace and joy that God promises His children...”
I believe that this book would be an excellent tool for families, or any small group, who are committed to exploring God’s word together, burying His truth in their hearts, and being able to have open, honest, thought-provoking, biblically grounded conversations. There really is no age limit to who will be profoundly touched by this gorgeous book. Very well done and one that I look forward to cherishing and passing down for generations to come. "

Ruth and Troy's new book, Foundations, sets the tone for family conversations around God's Word, whether its your actual nuclear family, a community group, or any group a shade between. The book sets forth 12 foundations, each with 5 brief daily reads, complete with colorful illustrations, Scripture, discussion questions, and an exhortation to focus upon that day. I also found the introduction section on family worship very helpful as we are in a season of raising very young children and are finding our way in developing good family worship habits. The material pulls no punches and sticks close to the heart of Scripture, with enough meat for the veteran Christian, but still easy to understand for young and unfamiliar hearts. The discussion questions are approachable and open-ended, and would be a great jumpstart for timid or reticent parents who want to have a good conversation, but don't know how to get started. I feel like this resource is a great next-step for us up from the Jesus Storybook Bible, as our kids get a little bigger and can engage in conversation, and I can see it being a winsome way to bring dinner guests into the worship of God in a comfortable, yet powerful way. It's a beautiful book for busy folks who want to do things God's way and build a firm foundation for the family unit. I'm grateful for this resource!

I can’t recommend this book highly enough.

Foundations is the third of Ruth Chou Simmons’ books that I’ve read and it is absolutely incredible. It’s meant to be experienced together in a group or as a family, whether you have children or not. It’s structured in simple chapters, and works so well as a daily bible study.

The principles and convictions that Ruth writes about are refreshing reminders of who God is and her thoughts and language are so incredibly accessible and understandable. Reading this is like having an easy conversation with an old friend.

As a new mother, I’ve been learning what my quiet time should/can look like. Adding this book to my daily reading along with my husband has been a breath of fresh air. We come together at the end of the day to discuss or talk throughout the day about it when we can - Ruth mentions that our expectations of what family devotional time should look like need to be thrown out the window. That we must each find what fits our own families and situations. The way this book is written makes it so easy to spend what time we have and make it count. Each piece ends with a thought to “dwell on” and a verse to carry with you throughout the day. I always walk away feeling that my reading is time well spent.

This book has left me feeling so encouraged and full of gratitude.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the free book in exchange for an honest review. As a hopeful adoptive parent, I'm reading anything and everything I can in the wait to be the best parent I can be. I cannot wait to walk through Foundations with my future family.

Foundations is a devotional that focuses on 12 biblical truths, with five devotions per truth. With Ruth being involved, of course there is absolutely stunning watercolors sprinkled throughout. From an aesthetic view, this book is gorgeous and would make a great addition to the coffee table. However, this book isn't meant to sit on a shelf. It's meant to be opened and read as a family.

Each devotional is written with children in mind, yet is applicable to every family member regardless of age. After a short prompt, there is something to dwell on, questions to discuss, and a scripture to memorize. I see this being a great conversation starter over dinner with the family and a great way to get the whole family to focus on God and who He is. With foundations ranging from loving God, hating sin, to being an encourager, going through this book with your family will create a solid foundation of God as the rock of your home. Highly recommend to any family looking for intentional time dwelling in the word.

This book combines teachings about Biblical truths with beautiful artwork and makes them accessible to families of all ages and sizes. Since the authors are raising 6 boys, they are familiar with the difficulties in teaching kids about the Bible. The size of the book is fairly compact, certainly smaller than Ruth's other books, making it more portable.

The book starts with a section about why time in the Bible is important, and then a section about why family worship matters along with practical tips for doing that. The next section explains why and how they chose the 12 truths that are taught in the book. In the last part, they take each of the 12 truths and have 5 days of study apiece, interwoven with artwork.

I appreciate the authors' candor about the challenges they have faced, and the simple studies for each day that include questions. If my kids get bored, they won't just fall asleep; they'll start rough housing and yelling. Questions help them engage with the material, which also helps solidify it for them.

If you have a family or are planning to, this is a great book to help you start a strong tradition for family worship, both with practical ideas for how to do that but also with study topics to get you started. And it is pretty enough to keep for decoration and pass down when your kids are grown.

Previewed this book in anticipation of using it for family devotions when the girls are a bit older. The 12 family rules (“biblical foundations to rule our hearts”) encompass all that a family should center on, the daily devotions are practical and thoughtful and the gospel is so clearly displayed on every page. Not to mention, in true Ruth Chou Simons fashion, the book is gorgeous!

I love these foundations so much that I bought a beautiful print of them and framed them for the living room!

Some of my favs:
Celebrate the gospel: “even when your family is struggling through conflict, discouragement, and challenging circumstances—celebrate the kindness of God in Jesus Christ. There is no greater truth for this life!

“Our family needs Jesus, and we need to see His sanctifying work in each of our lives every day. That’s what family worship is all about—drawing close to our Father and one another as we grow in Christ.

“Family worship isn’t the mysterious unicorn of holy parenting. It isn’t an unattainable gathering reserved for respectable families with manageable children in clean shirts, hands folded reverently. No, family worship is the intentional tuning of hearts through remembering, praising, believing, honoring, and exalting our holy God as a group of desperate people needed His power to love, forgive, encourage, and export one another.
