Calling All Witches! The Girls Who Left Their Mark on the Wizarding World is a collection of all the girls/women in the series but it is based on the movies instead of the books so some things will be different from the books. It starts off with a bio and then their contribution to the wizarding world. It does not add anything to this world and reads more like a fan-fiction than anything else but if you are a fan of this wizarding world then re-visiting these characters would put a smile on your face.

I loved the illustrations and inclusion of famous quotes by the characters.

"The things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end. If not always in the way we expect." - Luna Lovegood, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Calling All Witches!: The Girls Who Left Their Mark on the Wizarding World by Laurie Calkhoven

This book introduces us to both well known characters from the Wizarding World and awesome women we might not know as much about.

I really liked the way this book was created, the illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and brings such life to the both characters and the book. I knew many of the facts but still this was a really good read as I enjoyed the concept and the way Calkhoven has choosen to tell them.

I especially liked the pages where we for example could read about the "Six Times Luna Broke the Mold", "Seven Times Hermione Overcome Obstacles" & "Eight Times Ginny Took Charge". This felt very unique and fresh.

The book itself is a 100% worth reading and I will most definitely read it again soon. Thanks to my lovely mom for gifting me this at Christmas.

⭐️ Calling All Witches: The Girls Who Left Their Mark on the Wizarding World by Laurie Calkhoven gets 5/5 stars from me!

The books one reads because they cross the circulation desk at the library. I must thank whichever reader returned this delightful gem and, thus, had it cross my it-has-to-be-sorted-and-shelved stack.

Illustrations are vivid and lush. So many bios on the characters fans love – and those we love to hate (I’m looking at you Dolores Umbridge). Hermione gets her due with an eight-page spread! Luna & Ginny also score longer looks with four pages each.

Readers need to remember that this is an homage to the films . The “facts” presented are drawn from the film franchise and, thus, may differ from the canon set-forth in the books. For example, Cho Chang was the Dumbledore’s Army tattle-tale in the films but, in the books, it was Cho’s best friend Marietta Edgecombe that spilled the dirt to Professor Umbridge.
This mini-encyclopedia was a wonderful romp through the fandom – and a nice way to visit the Wizarding World in this time when I cannot travel to Orlando for the visit I really want to make!

3.5 stars. Was quite a fun read but I was disappointed that it was entirely about the films and not the books

I've been collecting girl role model books lately and was delighted to discover this at my library! The layout is very fun to read and the illustrations are gorgeous. I liked that it included the villains as well, because, really, "villain" is an opinion. ;) I only didn't like two things: 1. There are some movie screenshots for pictures. I would have preferred much more of the gorgeous illustrations. 2. The references were completely movie-based. So they missed all of the goodness that exists only in the books.

I have to admit, I'm having a hard time staying in love with the HP series at the moment. It's books like this that remind me of what initially drew me in and gave it such huge importance in my life.
My problem with this kind of book is that I always have the suspicion that they're cash grabs. Sure, the idea behind is pretty neat, but come on. There's not that much work or thought behind this.
Apart from that, this is a quick, diverting read that I wouldn't buy, but was delighted my library owns.

This was cute, but didn't really add anything new if you are a fan of the series. However, the artwork is gorgeous and I am happy to add it to my ever-growing Harry Potter collection.

Dit boek is leuk, om als verzameling in je kast te hebben staan. Maar verwacht er niet te veel van.

As it's women's history month, I've been trying to focus my reading on women authors and female characters. A good friend of mine, who is also a big Potter Head, suggested I give "Calling All Witches!" a read. Based off of the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling and focused just on the female characters, this book meets both of my criteria.

The book is divided into several sections. Students, Teachers, Villains, Moms, Political Figures, and Female characters from Fantastic Beasts. The first, and most prominent in the books and movies, is Hermione. She gets top billing, and well deserved. Then it moves to Luna and Ginny, and onto other minor and lesser known characters such as Parvati and Padma Patil, Hannah Abbott, Susan Bones, etc. I thought it was interesting that editors included a section for villains such as Dolores Umbridge, Bellatrix Lestrange, and Alecto Carrow. They included a short piece saying that they included these women because of the role they play and serve life lessons on what not to do with power. Interestingly, Narcissa Malfoy is not is this section but in the Moms feature. I thought that made for an interesting choice and the writer does offer an explanation, which I won't spoil here.

If you're a Potter Head, definitely give this book a read. This would also serve as a great birthday or general gift idea to a Potter Head in your life.

The only thing that bothered me was that some of the bios were inaccurate because they were going based on the movies not the books.

Meet the good and bad women of Hogwarts, Fantastic Beasts and the Wizarding World.
The cool aspects of this book that I respected and appreciated was that Hermione, Prof. McGonagal, and Luna Lovegood, among others, had multiple pages where they showed what makes each of their characters stand out, as individuals.
The villains, including Bellatrix Lestrange, among others, also shows their positive qualities, as well as their negative qualities.
This is also a great read alike for Harry Potter die-hard's, newbies to the series and the Wizarding World. I also think that this would be a fun read for Women's History month.

While I love the female focus of this book, and the message it’s sending to people of all ages, I wish a little more effort and attention to details was included.
Throughout the book there are spelling, grammatical, and stylistic errors - averaging to about one mistake every two pages; this being two pages too many in my own opinion.

I’ll openly and gladly admit that mistakes will always be there. However, there are just simply too many in this book for me to happily think that enough time was taken in editing and proofing phases.

A good addition to the wizarding world, not a great one.

Love the artwork! This is a great collection of thr badass ladies of the Wizarding World.
I'm always going to wish for more info pulled from the books for these kind of collections. Obviously SOME facts were pulled from the books or else they'd have nothing for some people, but my example is always going to be Ginny being done dirty in the movies vs how she is in the books.

Heroines of the Wizarding World in one book. All the reasons we love Luna and Hermione (#teamhermione forever!) and why we hate Bellatrix.
It is good to have a book about all of my favourite Witches on the shelf ❤️

The layout, the graphics, and the information is all beautiful within this book. I love all the characters in Harry Potter. I really wish we had more information on many of them but specifically nagini and how and why she ended up with Lord Voldemort.

No new information given about the characters and this was before the debacle that J.K. created when she disrespected the trans community so I won’t have brought it now.

Although it sheds light on some of the background female characters besides the obvious ones, this book did not appeal to me for the reason that it simply enumerates what the characters did in the movies, which are at times incompatible with the books. This book perpetuates the inconsistencies that I found annoying in the movies, such as the elimination of characters and introduction of scenes that were not in the books.

This beautifully illustrated book (kudos to the artist!) showcases the fascinating female characters from the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies. Each character profile includes key moments, quotes, and insightful descriptions.

While it's a shame that the author only drew from the movie adaptations, leaving out the rich book series, this collection remains an enjoyable read. The artwork alone makes it a worthwhile addition to any Harry Potter fan's collection.

This was cute as I read about Hermione, Luna and Ginny. It was also nice to spotlight Hogwarts’ many exceptional female faculty, but then I got to this piece of trash:

“Although not a witch, it was clear that Petunia Evans (later Dursley) loved her sister, Lily - though she had conflicted feelings about Lily’s magic and her marriage to James. After Lily’s death, Petunia could not find it in her to turn away her sister’s orphaned infant son Harry.”

Let's make something very explicit: Petunia Dursley is a child abuser who forced in nephew to sleep in a cupboard for 10 years and had him livein essentially indentured servitude whilst staying him. Let's not forget the summer before he was in second year when they locked him in hisoom and installed bars on his windows and a catflap to feed him meagre portions. She kept the boy because she was basically blackmailed by Dumbledore. This woman deserves no praise at all in these books. Even Severus Snape isn't as awful to Harry as Aunt Petunia is.

It's also quite superficial when it comes to witches who are villains and it's unfortunate that it doesn't explain why these actions are wrong and turn it into a teaching moment for young girls.

Anyway, Harry Potter is full of abuses that never get addressed because being abused by muggles is “worth it” to protect the Boy Who Lived from bad wizards and that inclusion is just gross.
