If you can stop time, you can do whatever you want.
Rylan can slow down time, then act while the rest of the world is frozen. He can pluck arrows from the air, win any fist fight, save innocents from certain death.
Then a goblin army attacked his village.
When a beautiful female mage helps him save his people, Rylan has a choice to make:
Go with her to an academy of mages to learn how to control his power…
Or stand by and let the evil Overlord, a creature with the power to influence others’ minds, take over the world of Voth one kingdom at a time.
Rylan will romance gorgeous women, face incredible dangers, and learn to control his powers in ways he’d never dreamed - all to prepare himself for the day he must battle the Overlord.
The world of Voth has more than enough sorcerers and wizards. What they need is a hero…
And a Time Mage.
Warning: this book contains harem elements and adult situations.
This was more of a (medieval) Super-hero academy than magical school. Young fishing village boy gets recruited to the magical academy and crazy adventures ensues, etc. The magic in this book is more like super-powers than classic magic. Each mage has a school and apparently, as far as the book mentions, he is grounded to that school alone, unable to "cast" other kinds of spells. It isn't really magical, in any sense of the word.
This book was bad. Really bad. The characters were inconsistent and the plot moved ways that were terribly predictable (while trying to be the opposite) or just completely illogical. One example: the mage responsible for the security of the academy invites the MC over to give him a lesson. On the way, he introduces all the equipment he uses to do so. I can only read that as a parody: "if anyone were to move a stone in this completely unguarded room, then the academy would be totally exposed to the forces of evil". It's like a general in the army inviting a foot soldier to the most secure room of the State and offhandedly mentioning: "wow, I sure hope nobody ever touches that red button or we would be in a lot of trouble, hahaha". Except in this case, the room with the button didn't have any guards at the doors.
The rest of the book was equally dumb. Everything is dumb. The plot, the characters, the world, the "magic system", it's all retarded. Why did the MC go to the academy in the first place when he was so reluctant (with reason) at first? Why did he stay when it was obvious he would be more like a serf than a peer? Why did he so readily agree to be there without even asking what he would get in return when he was so happy to stay in his village? Then there are the romance troubles and how they were handled. Spoilers ahead.
The cover is good, I guess. I wonder who the lady in the bikini is, though. I don't remember any outfit that described a bikini.
Although managing time, the ability to manipulate time is enormous and has no comparison, it kind of becomes a one trick pony in this first volume of this fantasy novel series. The main character, Rylan, needs to urgently change it up. It happens in Major League Baseball, with any "star" pitcher, if they only have one "major league" pitch, all the batters train and practice until they know how to bat it out of the park every time. So being time such an incredible possibility I am surprised that the author did not come up with at least a hundred different ways in which to defeat, amaze and conquer this fantasy novel world (at least all of the students that go to the Magic School). Because Rylan slows down time in every situation in the first volume, then the story and action become kind of flat...and telegraphed... Time when used by an immature and ignorant "mage" becomes a buff and de-buff, so like that famous senior-citizen lady once said to promote a fast-food restaurant: "Where's the beef?" What does the main character do before, during and after he modifies the flow of time? Why does the author not make the "rest of the story" interesting and different? The cover illustration is of a man a two women that look older...I cannot imagine these people still going to school to learn about their magic skills...That and Rylan seems to be the only sperm bank in that entire world, he is also the STD Central and the slut whisperer, all rolled into one. When I was asking for other abilities or skills, I meant magical ones...
A young man, a time mage since birth, defends his village against a goblin invasion and is recruited into full-time mage training. He becomes very popular, especially with the beautiful female mages. His mentor is poisoned, the city is invaded, and he is falsely imprisoned, being accused of all the good actions. However, his powers are all that save the king, the kingdom, the other apprentices, and himself from the evil Overlord. The invasion was to capture him, not the king. In the celebration of victory he discovers that he and his powers will determine the future of his world.
There’s a grand little adventure tucked away in this book and while many of characters are cursory and there’s not a lot of emotional depth it does explore some very interesting questions and definitely caught myself laughing out loud at several points, go read it now!
Here's a very good story well polished. This story has a lot of action and Does Not have my pet peeve (poor english/bad word-smithing). I'm a sucker for the ErrolFlynnesque Swashbuckling tale (this tale makes me remember Robin hood, Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk). I hope others enjoy as I did!!!.
Nope, not for me. If you love arrogant assholes, man whores and stupid characters then this book might be for you.
If you don’t like the above, I’d say stay clear. First few pages, hmm... sounded interesting, then the main Character opened his mouth and it all went to shit.
This one is a lot of fun. A different book i was going through took almost a week, this one took a day. It does have adult situations, but they last for a page, two at the most.
This is a good book. You should read it. I like the story. The characters are fun. Harem book without the many graphic sex scenes but the battles are fun.
The subject is far from original; having said that, I must confess I liked the book; I also liked the characters (most...); continuing this review on book 2
First Iron Mage, then Time Mags, and I was pleasantly surprised by both of Nolan's books. If Future Mage(the third? off shoot) is as good as the first two, I'll be buying it as soon as it's released as well.
