It's Only a Scandal if You're Caught

Rate this book
Lady Bianca Marlowe has a reputation for being beautiful, bold, and bad. She shocks the delicate matrons of London society at balls and tea parties with her outspoken opinions and turns the head of every red-blooded male in London with her daring fashion choices and flirtatious ways. When she is admitted into the prestigious May Flowers ladies' political society, it seems as though no one will be safe from her audacity. There is only one man who can tame her wild ways.

Jack Craig’s climb up from his birth in a brothel in Seven Dials to become a Chief Inspector at Scotland Yard was a long and arduous one, but after a series of high-profile arrests, his reputation as one of London’s most powerful law enforcement officers is firmly established. His advancement within the Metropolitan Police, and even a knighthood, seem inevitable. Jack has just one weakness—his passion for Lady Bianca.

Their attachment is as unsuitable as it is fiery, and neither are willing to listen to reason and stay away from each other. Especially once Bianca helps Jack uncover a plot to attack the Houses of Parliament that would make Guy Fawkes look like an amateur. But when the inevitable results of their affair turn them both into social outcasts and pit them against each other, they must either discover the true love that has burned beneath their passion or risk an explosion that could put more than their own lives at risk.

PLEASE BE ADVISED: Steam level – very spicy!

London 1855 "Lady Bianca Marlow had a reputation and she knew it. She was considered too forward for an aristicratic lady, too free and outspoken with her opinions but she was now a May Flower and no one could stop her." paraphrased but you get the picture! So, right off I knew she was going to be a challenge and could hardly wait to see what would happen!
Combine her with Inspector Jack Craig, who Bianca had know for years and the sparks begin to fly! "But Jack was a police inspector from a humble background and she was the daughter of an Earl. There were rules but Bianca was more than willing to ignore them!" Such was her attraction to him. He hoped to move up his rank so that he would be looked at as more acceptable to be with her on day.
What an adventure that has a lot happening right from the start! Trying to catch a man behind an attack while trying to prevent one, tension and excitement with an explosive romance, took me to the ending and I could only sigh. Another great addition to this series and I cannot wait to read the next one!

Beautiful, daring and independent Lady Bianca does not care about the ton. Jack is of humble beginnings, but is working as an Investigator and working hard for a promotion.
Jack and Bianca are in love, her mother has been trying to get her to wed. But, Bianca cannot because her love is Jack.
This story was action filled, because they are investigating. They have some daring stolen moments together. Beautiful romance, with a happily ever after!

The book is very well written and grabs your attention from the beginning to the very end. Jack and Bianca’s story is full of excitement that involves love between two vastly different social classes and the fact that it is not condoned by the ton or even her family. There is also a lot of excitement in the book that revolves around the politics of that time regarding the Irish. The investigation into the attempted murder of Lord Fergus continues slowly. This is a great read and I would highly recommend it.

Lady Bianca Marlowe has already cultivated a reputation for being too bold, especially now that she's become a member of the ladies' political society the May Flowers. Though she turns almost every head, she's only ever really been interested in one man.

Chief Inspector Jack Craig has come a long way from the Seven Dials to Scotland Yard and now firmly established himself as one of their most powerful officers. Despite this success, a match with the only woman he wants, who happens to be the daughter of an earl, is still beyond his reach.

Despite their better judgment, Bianca and Jack can't stay away from each other and soon their worlds collide irreparably and both must face drastic changes. Their relationship is further challenged when they uncover a plot to attack a particular political faction and must find a way to stop it despite having been cast out of their former roles. The two must work together, not only to save their love, but their lives as well.

After reading several other books with these characters, I must say I was quite disappointed in how characters I've loved in previous books were treating Bianca, even though it was realistic. I did find it rather difficult to like Bianca herself at times as well. That said, I loved seeing a couple who openly acknowledged that they belonged together and fought to make it happen.

Despite my frustration with some of the characters, there was high tension in this book that left me unable to put it down and I'm looking forward to the next one.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Blog link: https://mustreadalltheromance.blogspo...

I'm the Fence

So I was equal parts annoyed and enthralled by this book. On one hand, I liked the more liberal, less innocent approach Merry Farmer took to Bianca's character. I often find it hard to believe young women were as sheltered as many historical romance authors try to have you believe (although I know some would have been) - and the fact her mother had been open with her previous actions was refreshing. I did find Jack and Bianca's level of friendship slightly questionable, more in that everyone seemed so surprised they both wanted to pursue marriage as the ultimate goal when they had publicly, at multiple times, expressed that wish. And the whole set up with the apartment was way to obvious of a conclusion. I also felt the resulting reactions by everyone way overly dramatic when they all had hands in the actions leading up to it (especially Lady Katya). I did find the overall case they were trying to solve a nice addition and was not too irritated or surprised it wasn't completely solved since other characters need that plot line existing in their story. Also, the cast of characters, at times, was almost too much and hard to follow. Overall, I think I'll give at least another book in the series a try, but with some hesitation.

A SOLID 3.5 STARS!

I LOVED JACK AND BIANCA. THEY WERE LIKE THE DREAM COUPLE WHO COULD OVERCOME EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING TOGETHER. THEY HAD THEIR UPS AND DOWNS, BUT EVENTUALLY THEY WERE ONE AGAIN. THIS STORY STARTS OFF WITH JACK AND BIANCA ALREADY SEEING EACH OTHER FOR YEARS, so while I did feel cheated of how they met because I didn't read the first book, I still enjoyed it.

JACK is quite a loveable character. Grown up from the slums with a prostitute for a mother, he made a career by being in law enforcement, now having made it as Chief Inspector. But, that position still won't allow him to finally marry the woman of his dreams. Jack and Bianca has been carrying on for years now, stealing kisses and touches but never committing. Their social standing was too vast, and everyone's already talking about their relationship that shouldn't even exist. Jack is a brave soul, to contest with society's believe and vows to find a way to marry Bianca despite it all. The story focuses on the investigation he's currently doing and also his relationship development with Bianca. When Bianca becomes pregnant, the situation is dire and her parents acquiesced to them getting married only WHEN Jack becomes a baron, through connections of sorts. While he's pissed that Lord Malcolm elevated his rank into becoming one of them, he'll never be content for at heart, he's an honorable male who prefer to accomplish things his way.

BIANCA can never fit in with the society ladies because she's too radical. Involved in politics, she fights for women's right and try to educate the ladies that they CAN THINK FOR THEMSELVES. Bianca's a gem with Jack. She's unafraid of letting her passion reign where he is, willing to lose her virginity to him because deep down she knew that he will be the only man she will marry. Of course, there will be obstacles in the way, their social class being the biggest threat. When she is forced to marry Jack upon her pregnancy, Bianca becomes bitchy for awhile, blaming him for everything. Both will endure a rough patch of having their lives altered, and I'm only glad they were able to handle it maturely after the wind died down and set aside their differences.

OVERALL it was enjoyable but not enough to rank up to 5 stars in my reading preference. It's not the book itself, but this was all my personal preference in a story and where chemistry speaks volumes. Here, it was sweet, mature and focused on the mystery. But I think the couple was truly amazing and sigh worthy.

Chief Inspector at Scotland Yard Jack Craig’s climb up from his birth in a brothel a high-profile on cases & number of arrests, his reputation as one of London’s most law enforcement officers. However his only weakness, Lady Bianca who he secretly courts & wants to Marry. Though he is nothing but a bastard in her society's eyes All his money is saved to buy the house for Bianca before he asks her to marry her. He will not allow her to come by his place because it's in a bad part of town.
However, Bianca has some information that will help Jack uncover a plot to attack the Houses of Parliament. She needs to locate him immediately which is when she is determined to go by his place to find a Ms. Craig- who can that be?
On top of that, she might be pregnant. Though in denial & now her parents are forcing her to be married & will destroy Jack by taking everything that represents his identity. Including the ladies, he protects on the street.
Giving him a title & move him to the creme de la creme of society.
This means he cannot be inspector Jack Craig anymore but Lord John of Chremshaire an insult to where he grew up.
Can being a part of society help get to the truth behind the attack on the House of parliament? Can Biana help Jack uncover the truth once it is revealed there will be an explosion at the house party of Lady Claudia, who's brother is involved with the attack to destroy democracy? Can Bianca go from being an outcast to a warrior for the unfortunate & be in the MayFlower Ladies' eyes? Can Jack get his reputation & position back if they find the culprits to the crime?
Still, be the husband & love of Lady Bianca's heart.
Read the amazing challenges these two people go thru to stay true to themselves & love each other. And save the world in their own way.
Don't forget their chemistry is Hot HOT HOT!

The main characters were introduced to me in the previous book in this series as I have read the book about Bianca’s mother (and I’m not sure I would read it by how she was portrayed her as an ugly self-important awful woman).
And from the beginning I was intrigued by these two very different personalities.
How I do loved Jack, he was raised in a brothel but was not bitter about his upbringing.
While many many stories about men coming from the slums of the society edges show them as angry or ashamed of their birthplace, he is prideful of the women who raised him, and praises their strength.
Never reneging where he is from.
Proud to have elevated himself to where he stands now.
When they tried to belittle him with his new promotion, at first it was like branding him for his origines, then it became his own trademark and power.
Bianca is too outspoken for her own good and she very easily looses her temper. Her youth and her coddled life prevents her from knowing when a battle is lost or not. At the beginning, I do wondered if she was really in love with Jack, or more attracted to the forbidden. She threw caution to the wind, and took inconsiderate course of action without a thought to the consequences.
Her reaction when she finally discovered Jack’s world, what lies on the other side of the fences was one of a pampered girl, horrified to witness the life of the poorest.
I wondered if her love for Jack would pass the challenge of a life deprived of her usual comfort.
Then she surprised me, sure she stayed true to her unpredictable self, easily angered and with fit of temper but she stands for herself and those who came to count for her. She won’t bent to society’s dictates.
She is no super heroine, she makes too many mistakes for that but she is not weak, she find her force in Jack’s love and trust and for him, she will face everything and those who shunned her.
It was a different kind of Victorian romance, I loved this foray in today’s life of the less fortunate without adding misery to their already harsh lives.
A big fat 5 stars.

Excellent

This is an awesome book with danger, violence, and love. Lady Bianca Marlowe has a reputation for being beautiful, bold, and bad. She shocks the delicate matrons of London society at balls and tea parties with her outspoken opinions and turns the head of every red-blooded male in London with her daring fashion choices and flirtatious ways. When she is admitted into the prestigious May Flowers ladies’ political society, it seems as though no one will be safe from her audacity. There is only one man who can tame her wild ways. When she becomes pregnant out of wedlock her life seems to fall apart. Jack Craig’s climb up from his birth in a brothel in Seven Dials to become a Chief Inspector at Scotland Yard was a long and arduous one, but after a series of high-profile arrests, his reputation as one of London’s most powerful law enforcement officers is firmly established. Amazing historical romance!

Bianca and Jack are enjoying a simple love - there's no doubt in either of their minds that they're soulmates and deeply in love. If only it were really that simple! Unfortunately, Lady Bianca belongs to the nobility, while Chief Inspector Jack has risen far above his hardscrabble childhood in the brothels, yet he's nowhere near being considered suitable for Bianca.

The writing is brilliant, witty throughout, sizzling with heat and hunger, with non-stop excitement and suspense. The story gives us unique characters that may seem to be at odds with their time, yet they exude such authenticity that they remind us that every time had its pioneers and rabble-rousers. It was a joy to read about two such independent minds in 1885's London.

This story takes a hard look at class distinctions and prejudices while giving us a strong, rebellious yet highly intelligent heroine and a deliciously swoonworthy if somewhat lovestruck hero. The author clearly has done her homework, giving us deep insights into the political situation in Victorian England and how it affected the people of all classes. There's a bit of a crime drama element that is threaded throughout the series, but aside from that this is a standalone romance.

This book, this entire series really, is historical romance for those who love both history and romance equally. I couldn't have enjoyed it more, and am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

I have read other books by this author, and usually I like them. This book, however, turned me off right from the start. The first scene of the hero and the heroine in the alley just gave me the ickies. In so many ways, not just in that scene, I can't imagine a young Victorian lady acting as the heroine does. I could not suspend belief enough to go along with the idea that she was a woman of her times. Apart from the icky moments, I found Jack to be a fascinating hero. He came from such a lower-class background (growing up in a brothel), but he still had respect for the women who helped raise him, and he did work hard to overcome his background while maintaining a positive outlook on it all. The hero is the best part of this book, but it doesn't have much else to recommend it.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review—obviously.

Spellbound!

Merry Farmer has done it again! Her best books are those which dig up and dissect characters to give a thorough display of human emotions and this book does it best! Be it the intensity of the suddenly uncorked passion between Jack and Bianca, which they had to keep tightly corked for too long, or the insecurities creeping up between a couple whose marriage made them pariahs, or the interactions between Lady Katya and Bianca, or even the interactions between all the secondary characters - they are all too real, too familiar! I am an admirer of Lady Katya for too long now, but on this book Merry showed that even strong willed women can step down...I felt hypocrisy in Katya's character, but again, that is what made her more real!
If you like stories with characters that feel familiar and close to your heart, then I would highly recommend this book to you!

I received this as an ARC and am leaving an honest review.

I struggled with this book. The writing is good and I like that the author doesn’t keep repeating the same things throughout the book, however I did find some of the elements a little unbelievable, for example, Bianca and her rebelliousness and the scene in the alley?? Can’t believe that happened.

I did really like Jack though. He showed that no matter your background you can still overcome disadvantages to be successful in life. He was a great character, full of charm. But I couldn’t relate to any of the other characters, I found them stuck up. This may have something to do with the era the book is written in but I didn’t enjoy it.

A quick read and fine as a beach read but a little unbelievable based on the context with which it is written.

I really liked this story.. I loved how bold and true to her heart Bianca was. Jack was a great hero too. The angst in this book was high, as the two of them from opposing classes in society dared to come together. The total hypocrisy of her parents and family astounded me. Her mother had a string of lovers before she wed and yet she was so cold and heartless to her daughters predicament. Her brother Rupert who has a love marriage with Cece, also warned off Jack as he was a commoner. The fakeness and hypocrisy of British society really turned me off, even as I know that’s how it was in those days. But I don’t think she should have forgiven her family their behavior. I loved how she and Jack make their own little family and how she turns down the Mayflowers after they reject her . She instead turns to other social causes such as providing for “ fallen women”. Great book!

In this historical romance we meet Bianca and Jack, it’s my first time reading this author and although this is book 2 of the series, I was able to easily follow what was happening. Both the main characters are slightly different to what you would expect of that time period. Lady Bianca was outspoken and seemed to rebel against any societal norms whilst Jack was born in a brothel and worked his way up and out of the slums to become a Chief Inspector at Scotland Yard. Together they were explosive, they had so much chemistry. Yet, they were from very different backgrounds and had a lot of societal influence and expectations to overcome.

This author strikes exactly the right balance between a good, steamy historical romance and an exciting and interesting mystery plot, two of my favorite genres!

After reading the first 2 books in the series, the author takes a common trope and gives an unexpected resolution. Too many HR books spit out the obvious course of active to get the HEA. Ms. Farmer does not which makes the story all that more compelling to read. In addition, she has created a secondary mystery plot that gets intelligently woven through each book (at least, so far!) that makes me want to pick up the next book each time. This combination is the hallmark of a really smart and thoughtful writer like one of my favs, Lauren Smith and the League of Rogues.

Looking forward to reading book 3 and beyond!

"You are the best of everything I've ever had."

I had never thought about it, but apparently more of a slow-burn romance kind of girlie. Because Bianca and Jack start this off already in love with each other, they know the OTHER person is in love with THEM, they're sleeping together like, 5 chapters in and it just... wasn't enough UST for me.

The big plot here (instead of the "will they, won't they" or "when will they get together") is an issue of class. Arguably, that's a more interesting plot line than many of the regency romances I've read in the past, but (much like the "she's been in love with him her whole life and suddenly he realizes he loves her too" plot) it just wasn't for me.

But the plot is good, the spice is good, so if that's your cup of tea, give it a try.

Love is not second class

Bianca has been in love with Jack for years! Jack has risen in the ranks at Scotland yard through shear grit and determination after being raised in a brothel! Bianca has been told repeatedly that love and marriage between the classes is impossible! Gossip abounds about the two of them and though they are not caught in the act there are consequences to their actions! Ostracized and feeling as its just the 2 of them against not just the world but definitely all of London! A plot filled with explosives as they race Against time to save the very lives of the people that shunned them!

I enjoyed reading this. I liked that Bianca tossed her mother's hypocrisy in her face. Katya had been bolder in earlier stories, now she's judgmental. However, Bianca's not even considering the possibility of an unplanned pregnancy showed her true naivety. Considering Jack's origins it seemed quite out of character for him to totally forget himself, albeit he mentally chastises himself when he learns of the pregnancy.
As Lord Shayle was to the Foxes of Westminster, here Lord Denbigh is the malevolent thread through this series.
I read an advance copy; the thoughts expressed are my own.

Loved this story. She is an intelligent, outspoken, beautiful society single lady. She does and says what she thinks. He is a higher up in the law enforcement of the time. Raised up in poverty and not worth bragging about. But he doesn't let that bring him down. Even though society doesn't like them together they don't care. There are a lot of twists and turns with what happens to these two. It will keep you on your toes reading. I highly recommend it. I received a review copy and voluntarily review it.

I liked that Bianca was so feisty, she knew what she wanted and wasn't afraid of it. I also thought Jack was a great compliment to Bianca and was such a hard worker. I am glad they were able to be together and get married I was just sad they were pushed into several things they didn't want because of social rules. I do think in the end they made such an excellent couple they were able to prove everyone wrong. I am interested to see what happens next.

Jack is roguish and charming, Bianca is brash and outspoken. Neither are the traditional H/h for this time... Jack illegitimate and from a brothel... Bianca a spoilt but progressive woman for the day. The question is: can Bianca give up her life of comfort and prestige to be with Jack, a regular working Joe. What will Bianca do when faced with the reality of Jack's history and the truth of life for the less fortunate. I love Merry Farmer and enjoyed this visit to her world.

Enjoyable story about Lady Bianca Marlowe, a very outspoken, daring and headstrong young lady and Jack Craig, a Chief Inspector at Scotland Yard who was born in a brothel in Seven Dials. Jack is a wonderful character who you will love from the start. His relationships with the people in his neighbourhood is wonderful. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy Bianca's character as much, as she is too brash and spoiled for my liking. Story was very enjoyable and will keep you reading to see how these two can make their relationship work.

Oh my, I anxiously awaited Bianca and Jack's story. She is high born, he is not. Even though Jack is an upstanding Scotland Yard detective Bianca's family is not accepting of him. But they underestimate Bianca's will and their love for one another. The trials that follow are unexpected and mixing it with an investigation Jack had been involved with makes this a very exciting story. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.

Who is with me on this, Jack Craig could do no wrong? He is a police inspector, doubly swoon-worthy, takes responsibility and loves with everything he has. A lovely story with great characters who give and love with passion. I really liked that not everything they did was accepted by their family. It made the arguments and subsequent forgiveness believable. Will Denbigh ever be caught? Will Fergus find love? Inquiring minds need to know.

Jack and Bianca great characters.
Take one independent lady and one inspector and guess what happens you could almost feel the fire through the pages of this book. The author has written a wonderful book that on one hand very intense and on the other a fun romance. You will find this one is hard to put down and the last part of the book moves so fast it was great. I highly recommend this one it was a joy to read. Bianca and Jack were from total ends in the hierarchy of aristocracy. But their love was endearing and enduring in nature. The journey they were on was over a course of several years, but can the dictates of society and family keep them apart or will they finally get the HEA they deserve? Great addition to this series.
