Tenoch knew peace long ago when the dragons three ruled over the evil, susceptible peoples. Now, however, the dragons are long since dead, and humans rule.

For better or worse.

The king is a broken sloth. The crowned princess doesn’t want the throne. The prince is intellectually delayed. The younger princess is vain and spoiled.

The queen committing adultery sets off a chain of reactions that will leave the world in a time of turmoil. Will peace ever return to the land?

Starts off strong but halfway through I've lost interest. I may come back eventually though. It's not a permanent dnf, it's just a "put aside for now." Otherwise, good writing, strong characters, although slow world building. 3.5 ⭐ rounded up.

This is a tale of betrayal and deceit revolving around royalty, nobles, and a throne. A once great king lost his spark to rule, the children in line for succession are being targeted, and the “less than” citizens just want peace and prosperity.
Rosalynne, the eldest child and first in line in succession, seemed the more capable child until she slowly realizes the new queen may not want to relinquish her crown.
The tale is told in multiple POVs, which enables the reader to get a faster understanding of each characters roles and personalities. In this , the author did amazingly. This storyline is suitable for young readers. It contains no graphic violence or sexual content.
What I liked the least so far…no dragons…at all. They are talked about as being part of history and that’s it. Also, I anticipated the direction the tale was taking ahead of time which is a bummer for me but again, solidly a great tale to follow for young readers.

In the Eye of the Dragon is the first in a series, and to be perfectly honest, it wasn't a whole lot of fun reading it. I had to struggle to get through parts, and despite the title, there weren't any dragons in it. Possible dragons will show up in later books in the series, but in this book, they were only mentioned a few times, and the only time they could even pretend to have been actually in the story was during one scene when the main character was dreaming, but promptly woke up before anything but scales were mentioned. A pretty poor showing for a dragon book in my opinion. I doubt I'll be reading more in this series, though I suppose it's not completely out of the question, especially if I find them for free..

Thank you to the author for giving me an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

4.5/5

This was fantastic! I don’t normally like fantasies that are so heavily centered on political drama, but the characters were so well developed that I never lost interest. The author really does a great job of portraying the human condition.

I knocked a half star off because I had some slight issues with the style of the prose, but this is probably just a matter of personal preference!

A great new GOT type series. A young princess carrying out her fathers orders for executions, the queen is pregnant and the king knows it's not his. There are many story lines in this story and all are enjoyable and strong, even those that do not mix with the main characters at this point. While this book is longer than those I usually read it positively flew by and I was disappointed that there wasn't more. I can't wait to see where this series ends up going. I believe there is a lot of magic and possibly dragons that hasn't even been touched yet.

NM Zoltack does a good job of introducing his characters. He tells us about each one of them, going from one to another so we get rather full pictures of them. The king, whose wife died giving birth to her third child. The children. Rosalynne the heir; Noll the son who was dropped on his head as a baby; Vivian, the youngest. We meet servants, guards, commoners and nobles and get a notion of what is going on in the kingdom. If you like good character portraits, this is a good book for you.

A Time of Turmoil is an awesome book. The characters, world, and story became real. I found myself being emerged, as I was there seeing the story happen. I could not put this book down. I cannot wait to read book 2.

Good book with great world building and well written characters. It does focus a lot on political maneuvering, which I normally don't like in a book. But this one manages to combine that with complex enough characters that you really care what happens to them and wraps enough other storylines around it to create a rich interesting book.

Loved how the ending went I can not wait to read the next book in the series. How we all can get so pompous at what we do and then smack life hits us with things we never knew would ever come at us. This is what this book shows so far.

DNF. I just wasn't feeling it, even after I was 90% of the way through.

A family torn apart when the mother died giving birth to a daughter and just happens to be a Queen and King. The King goes into depression and won't have anything to do with the three children. The oldest girl is in training to be a future Queen. The King marries again and things happen. Then marries a very young girl, the things really happen after that, wow. A well written book about a family in distress and the unexpected.

REVIEW
This story is a unique telling of a world where one holds the power, yet never should have. Dragons used to rule, however, they were killed off, or were they?
The king lost touch with himself, and life and ruling after his first wife passed. He has passed most of the things off to his oldest daughter Princess who doesn't want the part but has no choice.
Vivian is a riot in my opinion but when you read the story you will see why. And the youngest child of the king Noll he stole my heart.
Not all is what it seems and the more you read the more your eyes open. Very well-written story.

Setting the Stage?

The first book in a series is more difficult since characters and their relationships are just being set. The seemed elimination of a sympathetic character is sometimes hard to take. Hopefully, the next book begins to clarify some storylines.

Good surprise

This story is full of characters that are full of life. Well developed, emotional and you fall in love with them. They are all human and flawed. Dragons are just mention. A sip to keep you wondering. Cannot wait to read the next book
